The Report
Vancouver Summer Legacy Classic 2013 hosted by sdematt
28 Players, 5 Rounds, Cut to top 8
I didn’t really take notes so if one of my opponents reads this and remembers better than I do please let me know. I don’t usually run so much Strom hate but there was like 6-8 ANT decks in the room.
Round 1 vs JUND
Games One: I’m on the play with a fast hand, something like Mountain 2x Sol Land, Grind Stone, and an Imperial Recruiter. Mountain Grindstone pass, turn 2 Sol Land into Imperial Recruiter for Painters Servant. My opponent taps out on their second turn to drop a Bob and I go for it, playing a second sol land into Painters Servant activate Grindstone, Game.
Sideboard: + 2 Ensnaring Bridge +1 Spellskite, cutting 1-2 REB’s and something else.
Game Two: Not much here just got my Bloodmoon Thought Sized then run over by two Goyfs, it was quick.
Game Three: Back on the play! With a perfect hand for it! Turn zero BLOODMOON! My opponent has a basic swamp which they use turn two to cast a Bob, unfortunately for them Bob flips an Engineered Plague (no idea why you would bring that in) and two Lilianas giving me all the time I need to Recruiter for Painter and Top for Grindstone.
2-1 Games 1-0 Matches
Round 2 vs ANT
Game One: My opponent is on the play, I know he is on ANT because he just beat my friend in the mirror. Tropical Island pass, I think I play Mountain Top. He EOT Brainstorms, and I think to myself that his hand is either very fast or he’s playing quite poorly. The latter is confirmed on his turn when he brainstorms again (without fetching) the drops an Underground and Preordains (Protip don’t do that). My hand however was weak and I have few way of interacting with him game one, I durdle around looking for my combo and he Ad Nausea’s for the win the turn before I can really do anything. As we sideboard my opponent asks what colors my deck was in total confusion.
Sideboard: -3 Lightning Bolt, -1/2 Welder, -1 Something, +3 Thorn of Amethyst, +3 Mindbreak Trap (I forgot to side in Crypts)
Game Two: I think I had Thorn turn one and the combo in hand, I easily race him.
Game Three: Back on the draw, I have decent land, Painter, a REB and Top I keep. My REB gets Duressed and I drop and spin Top off a Sol Land. Eventually I get painter down, turn the world blue and am able to float a REB on top of my deck with Top. Eventually he goes for it and I REB the critical Tutor leaving him with nothing and he scoops.
4-2 Games 2-0 Matches
Round 3 vs Ben on JUNK
Game One: I keep a sketchy hand with no red sources but both combo pieces and cross my fingers that he doesn’t have Swords. He dose and I fail to draw a red source before being beaten to death by Bobs, Shamans and Knights.
Game Two: I don’t remember much of what happened this game, but I know Bloodmoon came down and some point to make winning very easy,
Game Three: I don’t remember this that well, I know I kept like a 4 or 5 land hand with at least one Moon effect. I drop an early Bloodmoon, however had a basic Swamp for Top and Dark Confidant. Lucky for me Bob never finds a Green source for Abrupt Decay. I eventually find my own Top and we both spend like 5 turns doing nothing other then then spinning looking for cards. I find mine first and that’s game.
6-3 Games 3-0 Matches
Rounds 4 & 5
ID, Why play? I think I end up 3rd at the end of swiss.
Top8
Quarters vs ANT (W/ 1 Grimm Tutor)
Game one: I am on the play and keep a somewhat sketchy hand with no combo pieces but a turn one Revoker, seeing how I’m so weak to storm preboard I assumed a mull wouldn’t help. I play Revoker off an Ancient Tomb and name Lion’s Eye Diamond. My opponent plays Tropical Island Ponder and passes the turn. On my turn I think I played Jaya Ballard of a Mountain and Chrome Mox? I’m not totally sure. I pass my opponent drops a black source plays Cabal Ritual into Dark Ritual and I think I’m dead, but lucky for me he casts Ad Nauseam! He’s made his land drop has no mana floating, and as near as I can tell his only way to get hell bent was with LED meaning he needs to find Petals, Rituals and a Grim Tutor/Tendrils to kill me. To no one’s surprise he kills himself drawing cards, I have no idea why he thought he needed to try and win that fast, he should have waited for sure.
Sideboard: -3 Lightning Bolt -1 Jaya Ballard -1 or 2? Goblin Welder and something else for +3 Mindbreak Trap +3 Thorn of Amethyst +2 Tormod’s Crypt
Game 2: This one was brutal, opponent is on the play, Ponders and passes. I Ancient Tomb out a Thorn of Amethyst. He drops a land and pays for Lotus Petal, I play City of Traitors into two Revokers naming Petal and LED. I start Revoker beats and play out Tormod’s Crypt and Top. At 3 lands he Abrupt Decays my Thorn but I’v drawn another. At the second thorn he concedes and I decline to rub in the fact that I had Mindbreak Trap sandbagged the whole game. Pro Tip: Draw all your sideboard cards.

8-3 Games 4-0-2 Matches
Simis vs UWR
Game one: On the draw, my opponent plays Volcanic Island into Delver and passes. I play City of Traitors, Chrome Mox exile Goblin Welder and play Bloodmoon, sandbagging a Simian Sprint guide for the Daze I’m expecting. Sure enough my opponent immediately cast Daze bouncing his Volc, and is visibly disgusted by monkey pay. I take a little time to combo after my first Painter is Lightning Bolted, but his Delver took about 5 turns to flip so I was still successfully racing him with 2 Imperial Recruiters and a Phyrexian Revoker (naming Grim Lavamancer).
Sideboard: I don’t remember, the whole main deck seems good here. I could see maybe bringing in more E Bridges seeing how they can only win through damage, but who knows what I did. I think I replaced a Lightning Bolt or two for Pyroclasum because I assumed he was running Geist.
Game Two: My opponent starts with Volc into Delver again, I play Mountain Grindstone into Daze, which is not terrible because I have a Welder in hand. Delver fails to flip and he replays the Volc and passes. I think I play a Sol land into Welder and Top leaving up mana for Daze, spin top and see the second Mountain I want to get the Bloodmoon in my hand through either a second Daze or Red mana for REB. Delver fails to flip and my opponent plays Tundra into Stornforge grabbing Batterskull. I drop my second Mountain and go for the Bloodmoon he Spell Pierces, not the Force of Will I was expecting, but who cares I can REB that too. REB resolves and I have locked my opponent out from casting anything other than Lighning Bolt for the rest of the game. Next turn my opponents Delver finally flips but I find a Recruiter with my top and the race is not even close.
2-0
10-3 Games 4-0-2 Matches
Finals vs B/W Deadguy
Game One: My opponent is on the play and leads with Marsh Flats pass, I play Mountain Pass, he fetches scrubland in my end step. Opponent drops a Fetid Heath and plays Stroneforge Mystic. I could not be more happy, City of Traitors into Bloodmoon! That was basically game.
Sideboard: I brought in some combination of Lightning Bolt, Pyroclasum and maybe E Bridge I think I cut a few REBs and perhaps a Welder (I was assuming his only removal was Plow). I can’t remember exactly.
Game Two: I don’t remember to many details of this match, honestly it was a bit anti climatic. I know I got an early Bloodmoon down and was spinning Top for some time looking for a Recruiter/Painter. My opponent at one point played his own Phyrexian Revoker and named Top, which seemed questionable but he was already horribly behind. After a few turns of drawing blanks I find Painter, turn the whole world blue and Grind my opponent into two Underground Seas!

LOL @ B/W Deadguy player fetching scrubland ... 1/2 the point of playing that deck over junk is having access to basics (the other 1/2 is being able to profit from Perish)
Re: American Mountains Crush Canada! 1st with Imperial Painter
Two iPainter win-reports on one forum page. The sauce is awesome.

Re: American Mountains Crush Canada! 1st with Imperial Painter
Sounds like most of your opponents were terrible and shouldn't have been playing the decks they were playing.

How can you claim U-S-A when you play Russian Blood Moons and Chinese Imperial Recruiters?
Why do you hate America so much? USA #1!

First the Recruiters are Japanese, and second I do love the USA but I also love wasting the Judges, my opponents and my own time with texts checks.
Its very selfish which I think you will agree is one of the great American virtues.

All right, you convinced me. Plus we import all the expensive stuff from Japan anyway.
USA #1!
