My trip to Syracuse with Eva Green. (pictures included)

First off, I'd like to apologize for the long time it took for me to post this. I was swamped at work and couldn't do it then.

About a couple of weeks ago I decided it was time for me to go to a tournament outside of the continental Commonwealth of Virginia so I decided to go to the Beta Tundra Winter Wonderland event in Syracuse, NY. I was able to secure a ride with the Ultimate Driving Machine (Obfuscate Freely [Alix Hatfield]). Now I had to chose what on earth I would play. I knew I wanted to play something good, and by good I mean something with Tarmogoyf. My initial choice was to play R/g/b goblins with Goyfs in the main instead of piledrivers but after testing I didn't like the deck that much. I then thought about the BGW aggro-loam deck that I've played for a while but I felt like something was missing from the deck, that's when Anwar and Dan started playing a deck known as Eva Green more often at the weekly tournaments. The deck is sui-ish in style with an addition of tarmogoyf and MD seal of pirmordiums and a great sideboard geared to hate on some of the more played decks. For reference here's the deck in layman's terms.

I borrowed the cards I didn't have from Anwar and took them to NY with me the week before the tournament because I knew I wouldn't see him again until after the tournament. I take off the second half of Friday so that the Hatfield's can pick me up and like usual they were late. However when they did arrive I saw Dominic (Happy Gilmore) would be joining us. We get on the road and pickup Damon (Parcher) from Maryland. We drive for a while and get hungry so we stop by a Red Robin because it's freakin awesome sauce. Seriously, I can't count the number of burgers better than the Whiskey River BBQ burger there. It's freakin redonka donk. We head out and Dominic decides to drive (or at least tries to) and we stall out a couple of times before we even get back to the highway. GG. Thank God Alix "had" to use the bathroom about 15 minutes later and we stopped by a gas station and Alix resumed driving responsibilities from there. At about 10pm we get to Syracuse and put our crap in the hotel. I get some sleep shortly after the second VA car rolls up because I'm dead tired.

Morning of the tournament I get up at about 6:30 am, sleep for a little more and Dominic and I start some testing at 7:45. At 9am we get some breakfast and decide to join the rest of the crew already in the Hatfield's room. We walk in and see this monstrosity:

Now, for those of you who have never seen Jesse Hatfield (Mad Zur) this is what he looks like at 9am after about 6 hours of sleep. I truly feel sorry for his future wife/husband. I mean this from the bottom of my heart. And if you're wondering who that beautiful lady is on the bottom right of the screen then you're a ***. That's Alix Hatfield. ***. After 1 hour of everyone complaining for the Hatfield's to hurry up they decide to finally build their decks at 9:45 am. We get out of the hotel and reach the mall at about 10:10 am and sign up. We have about an hour from this point until the tournament actually starts so we hang out with the NY crew and goof off.

Round 1: Me vs David (Freakish 777) Black thresh.
Game 1:
I win the roll and play a turn 1 thoughtseize. I see some blue and black cards and notice he's playing thresh with MD Stifle and chrome mox. I play a shade turn 2 and then a turn 3 goyf. He doesn't recover and I win shortly there after.

Game 2: Board In 4 choke, out 3 seal 1 Snuff Out.
I play some early hand disruption and get out a Goyf who is 4/5 then gets pumped to 5/6. Followed up with more hand disruption and disruption I win 2-0.

1 - 0 ( 2 - 0 )

Round 2: Me vs Gus (don't think he's on the source) Threshold
Game 1:
I win the roll and play a turn one ritual + thoughtseize + hymn. I get some beats on board and get him down a couple turns afterwards.

Game 2: Side, same as before.
I get a turn one ritual + thoughtseize + shade. Followed up by a turn 2 sinkhole followed by a turn 3 shade. GG?

2 - 0 ( 4 - 0 )

Round 3 Me vs Adam (Nightmare) TEC The Epic Control
I know what he's playing as I got to see his deck before hand and I know he's playing a crap ton of control in his deck.
Game 1:
I feel confidant however as my opening grip is not bad. I get some early threats countered and answered. He resolves a shackles on like turn 15 with 5 islands and I only have a tombstalker in hand. I draw a hyppie and give Nightmare a belated Christmas present. I play Hyppie and then realize my mistake. He latches onto the hyppie with his shackles and swing on his next turn and makes me discard my stalker. Bad beats :(

Game 2: Sideboard (- 4 sinkhole , + 4 choke)
I go first and get a shade to stick. Beat in he deals with it, then get some other creature to stick and beat. Rinse and repeat with a side of disruption and win after a while.

Game 3:
I get some very early pressure to stick and he ends up not being able to deal with a hyppie once he's at 5. I waste his tundra which appears to blindside him because it was the first time I played a waste. He then plays a plains, I swing for the win and he shows me the humility in his hand.

3 - 0 ( 6 - 1 )

Round 4 Me vs David (Goobafish) UGR Stifle/waste thresh.
Game 1:
I go first and play thoughtseize. His hand reveals Stifle, waste, trop, spellsnare, daze, ponder and brainstorm. I hit the stifle as I have a fetch in my hand and follow up with a turn 2 seal of primordium to try to get him to play a daze/snare. He doesn't counter it though and I realize later on the reason he didn't is because he isn't playing counter top main. I play a sinkhole which gets snared, then hymn which is snared then a goyf which gets snared. The dude top decked 2 snares in a row, wtf. Then play a tombstalker that get's forced. He plays a goyf which i snuff out and he gets 2 mongeese to stick while I topdeck 2x snuff out with him at 17.

Game 2: Sideboard ( - 1 snuff out, - 3 Seal) + 4 choke.
Very similar to the first game, mongoose beats this deck if I can't get anything to stick. I do make a play error though. He attacks with his mongoose while I have a shade untapped with 1 swamp untapped. I block then pump and he stifles. I knew he was playing stifles and should have pumped before blocks. Had I done this I would not have blocked and he would not have had the mana open to burn my shade (which is why I figured trading would be best as to not let my shade die without taking his mongoose). I get him to 6 and he plays wipe away to swing in for the win.

3 - 1 ( 6 - 3 )

Round 5 Me vs Lam Phan (not on the source) Same thresh as round 4.
Game 1:
More of the same as the previous round, however I make what could be an aggressive mistake. He has 2x mongoose on the board while I have 1 stalker and 1 shade. I'm at 2 and can't afford to attack with my flier until I draw a goyf. I also have a ritual in my hand so I do some math and if he doesn't block my shade I win with the ritual and untapped lands. If he does block I can keep my shade and have mana open to play goyf as a blocker for his last goose. He ends up chumping the shade and has the spell snare in hand for goyf. I didn't mind this aggressiveness as we were playing draw go, and with me at 2 life he was bound to draw the burn or creature before me if I didn't take this opportunity.

Game 2: same boarding strategy.
We trade beats early on and at the end I have a goyf + shade in play to his goyf. I swing in with his life at 11 and pump shade to bring his life down to 2. He untaps his goyf but not his lands ( I got a turn 3 choke to stick ) and draws his card. He swings with goyf bringing me to 2 and plays a volc + bolt for the win. I suck at magic, I should have just swing with shade and then swung with both the next turn for the win.

3 - 2 ( 6 - 5 )
Round 6 Me vs Nick (Nickrit) Enlightened Still.
Game 1:
First off, Nick is one of the politest people I have ever played against. He is also one of the quitest too lol. On to the game.. I get some early thoughseize + hymn + sinkhole action going and get a hyppie and stalker to stick ftw.

Game 2: Side - 4 snuff out + 4 choke.
I get a thoughtseize which hits a swords, he has e. dragon 1stp, 1 cs and a decree left in hand. I then play a goyf (which I hope he counters) and he does. He taps out on his following turn to cycle his dragon because he's only on 2 lands. I then play a choke and he's never able to recover.

4 - 2 ( 8 - 5 )

Afterwards I see that I finished 9th. Turns out that if you borrow Anwar's cards you also get the 9th place tag that comes with being Anwar. Overall it was a fun tournament that I enjoyed and was able to meet up with some more of the sourcers. I then head over to the Uno's with Allen (URABAHN) to watch the skins game. While we wait to be seated we start talking about 14 year old girls and I come up with a scenario in which he says is the perfect way for him to hook up with a youngin. The scary part of this conversation is that it was entirely serious without any joking around. Freaky huh? We get seated and our skins are down 13 - 0 and when I go to use the bathroom after I eat my burger I come back to see the skins are up 14 - 13 wtf?? And by the time we are done with desert the game is practically over at 28 - 14. We finish eating by the time the top 2 play it out for the side event (Alix vs Bryant with TES). As they're playing I make it my goal to make fun of both of them as much as I possibly can because no one really cares during a $5 side event. I did convince Alix that Vijay Singh is my brother in law though, which made everyone laugh at him lol.

We head out after Alix keeps bad hands and loses to the Ruby Tuesdays down stairs. I sit with nightmare, David Gearhart, urabahn, and nightwolf9. We discuss the normal topics, pedophilia, necrophilia everythingphelia etc.. However there is an awesome story to about Teeni Bopper that was shared. I would tell the story but I doubt I could do the justice that Nightmare would be able to give it. So Adam, please do share.

After dinner we go out to someone's house (sorry I forgot your source name) where nightmare gets owned by an extended Wake deck. We then head to the hotel to sleep. We wake up the next day, grab some breakfast and drive home where all we do is make fun of Calosso because he's retarded and Tacosnape because apparently every deck was originally created by him and that the lists were secret tech until we stole them all.

Good report, I especially enjoyed the pictures at the beginning. Don't worry, placing ninth is a rite of passage with suicide decks. Oh, and I think it would be a travesty if Jesse Hatfield doesn't start to learn guitar immediately with hair like that.

Ouch, this one hurts. Nitewolf9 actually called me from Syracuse and told me that came in 9th and I was like "What happened?" and "I'm sorry." and then he tells me that he just ID into T8. I would have been mad, but I was so excited that nitewolf9 was in T8 with Eva Green. But zulander had to go pour rain on my parade. Its okay zulander, get into T8 next time.
