Re: [DTB] ANT (Ad Nauseam Tendrils) Storm Combo
@sawatarix
Hi, Kai! thanks for you mini report and your list!
I want to ask about that 1 Burning Wish. Does it serve as the 5th Infenal Tutor? but if we go into burning wish route, there is no storm engine available this way (unless we have pif in hand), so I guess there will not be guaranteed tendrils kill, and thus will often go for empty the warrens?
could you plz elaborate on this choice? thanks!
Re: [DTB] ANT (Ad Nauseam Tendrils) Storm Combo
Thank you guys, I'm pretty satisfied with my current list.
Before i talk about my deck maybe you have to know a couple of things first.
Here in Tokyo there is a super star deck which is omnipresent: omnitell
Omnitell with boseiju, who shalters all in the main which means that miracle and even delver decks struggle against it.So those decks have started to include more proactive hate in their decks like hatebears and even stuff like slaughter games and extirpates.
I really like this movement because omnitell is easy to defeat with storm (probs to swarms and discard !).
On the other hand slaughter games and extirpates are also effective against storm so it is time for 1 singleton burning wish to have a backup tendrils .
Look at Burning Wish as a second Tendrils of Agony with SlaughterGames / Extirpate proof.
I just refuse to loose against one of those cards.
You all know games against BUG Decks where your tendrils in hand gets discard with an active deathrite shaman on board - i refuse to loose against those plays even if they are rare.
Pyroclasm is simpy better then lightning bolt megadeus. There is almost no argument to play lightning bolt over a sweeper for nearly the same mana cost in my opinion.
Re: [DTB] ANT (Ad Nauseam Tendrils) Storm Combo
Hello everyone! I just started playing Magic again after a few years out of the game, so decided to go and play a small Legacy event near me today. I was unsure about which storm deck to run, but I end up playing ANT for 5 rounds.
4 delta
4 strand
2 usea
1 volc
1 trop
1 island
1 swamp
4 LED
4 petal
4 dark ritual
4 cabal ritual
4 gitaxian probe
4 duress
4 cabal therapy
4 brainstorm
4 ponder
3 preordain
4 infernal tutor
1 ad nauseam
1 tendrils
1 past in flames
SB:
3 xantid swarm
4 abrupt decay
2 massacre
2 dread of night
2 chain of vapor
1 surgical extraction
1 telemin performance
Pretty standard list (I don't own a Grim Tutor), but I ruminated on the sideboard all the way up until the tournament started because I wasn't sure what to play. I decided to cut Carpet of Flowers because I didn't see anyone running Delver, so wanted to play 2x Surgical Extraction, but only had 1 - so I decided to play a random Telemin Performance because I wanted to try a weird tech card :D
Round 1: GWb (Maverick?)
Game 1: My opponent makes a turn 2 Thalia and I can't really deal with that.
SB: I think I boarded in Massacres, Dreads, Chains and a Decay. I cut my Duresses and trimmed a Preordain and a Gitaxian Probe or something.
Game 2: He makes a Gaddock Teeg but I Chain it and Ad Nauseam on turn 2 (?) and kill him.
Game 3: He gets a Deathrite, but no other real hate and I just Ad Nauseam to kill him.
Round 2 (1-0): Monoblue Omniscience
Game 1: He gets an early Emrakul (T2) and I can't do anything. He Flusterstormed my t1 Duress.
SB: I brought in Xantids, Telemin Performance and I think a CoV or two.
Game 2: He accidentally draws an extra card during mulligans and the judge makes him mull again, basically. So he starts with 4, which is not ideal for him. I mull too though, and don't have much action. I get an early Xantid down, but can't draw any action. We basically play draw-go for a while, but I managed to snag 2 Omnisciences off a Cabal Therapy and eventually get Past in Flames and kill him because he's covered in Xantids.
Game 3: We both keep, and I have good control of his hand. He has something like an Emrakul, a City of Traitors and a Divert (which is irrelevant because I have Xantid), but topdecks a Show and Tell and puts the Emrakul in, so I know I have to combo. I'm really tight on mana but have a pretty stocked graveyard, so I crack my LED for blue and Infernal intending to get PiF, but then realise that I can't actually kill him like that, so I get Ad Nauseam instead and then realise I only have 1 black mana in pool! Disaster. I ask him after the game what it would've been like if I got Telemin Performance, and he seemed surprised and said I would've gotten an Emrakul, but apparently the legend rule has changed since I last played and it wouldn't have killed his! I did consider it though, because if he only runs 1 Emrakul it kills him because it mills him, but I didn't know his list and thought there was always the danger that I might hit a random Snapcaster or something. Anyway, I shake it off and resolve to play tighter (I haven't played in years, remember!)
Round 3 (1-1): BUG w Liliana and Jace and stuff (?)
Game 1: He gets a Liliana online but has no real clock so I think I can still get into it. He Wastelands me a bit but I eventually just draw an Ad Nauseam and kill him.
SB: I brought in the Chains, and I can't remember exactly but I think I brought in a couple of Xantids and a couple of Decays.
Game 2: He gets an early Confidant, but the game is pretty slow. He eventually also resolves a Lili and some Goyfs, and I just can't get into the game. He casts Swan Song in this game on my Dark Ritual, and then can't continue to combo off. He untaps and Lilianas and Wastes (and has an active Deathrite) and I'm out of it.
Game 3: I get a Xantid in (I learned after the game that he wasn't even playing Force!) but I get Thoughtseized twice. I end up with just an Infernal Tutor and LED in hand and some lands in play and its not looking good, but I untap and rip a second LED, so just tutor and crack both and that is that. He also boarded in a Grafdiggers Cage but it wasn't relevant.
Round 4 (2-1): BUG w Hymns
Game 1: He goes t1 Thoughtseize, t2 Hymn, t3 Hymn. He doesn't have many threats but eventually makes something and I lose.
SB: Xantids, CoVs I think.
Game 2: He doesn't really have a lot - I Cabal Therapy him and he taps out to Brainstorm, so I respond with Dark Ritual -> Cabal Ritual -> Ad Nauseam, which resolves. I have 18 life but somehow manage to completely brick. I just need to find a Petal or a Dark Ritual but hit a bunch of nothings. I end up at 2 but have to keep going until I hit one of those cards, so opt to keep going and flip a Cabal Ritual. GG.
Round 5 (2-2): Elves!
I'm now out of contention but play anyway because its good practice and that's exactly what I need after my long absence!
Game 1: I take his Natural Order and Ad Nauseam out. He actually ended up drawing another, and could've Craterhoof'd to put me to low life but didn't, so I was able to AN instead of PiF which would've been more difficult.
SB: I misboard (more about that after) and bring in the CoVs.
Game 2: He has a good Thoughtseize but I'm sculpting a really strong hand. He then proceeds to topdeck Cabal Therapy and cast it twice sacrificing a random dude and takes all my gas. I try to continue but can't draw anything.
Game 3: This was a cool game. My opponent was a really nice guy and I really enjoyed all our games, actually! Anyway, we both have some control over each other's hands, but he gets some Nettle Sentinel beatdown on me (who said Elves has to combo!?) and I am forced to Ad Nauseam at like 10 life. I end up not hitting enough gas (hit Tendrils, welp) and extend the hand.
We talk after the game with his friend as well and he says that I should've brought in my Massacres and got rid of more of my Duresses, because Ritualing out a Massacre might take 2 cards but will still kill his whole board including his Dryad Arbors. A valuable learning experience! :D
Anyway, it was a fun day and I got to meet lots of Legacy players in the area (I just moved here recently so I'm eager to meet more players!), plus on the way home I got a really cute girl's number so it wasn't all bad! Next time if the Ad Nauseam RNG gods are on my side (and I actually make the right colours of mana...) I think I can do pretty well with this deck. Going to work on my SB some more too - might consider trying a Burning Wish build instead even. I hope this little report is useful to some people even though I didn't do too great. There's a big Legacy tournament at ChannelFireball next weekend that I might go to, so will gladly accept some technology for that event if any more experienced players can assist me. The last time I was playing ANT it was back before Gitaxian Probe so I'm eager to keep playing if only to adapt to all the crazy new cards my opponents are playing against me!
Re: [DTB] ANT (Ad Nauseam Tendrils) Storm Combo
@cdnza
I dont know if ritualing to masacre vs elves is the best plan. I have thought of it too many times but never really liked it.
Other forum opinions?

If it's for the Slaughter Games (on ToA) you could replace the Wish with an EtW and regain the Belcher-mode via LED(s) and Infernal you lost by cutting Ad Nauseam for my favorite configuration of 1 EtW/1ToA/2 PIF
Edit: the Main advantage to play without AD is that boarding several Massacres doesn't ever hurt you against D&T or other hatebear decks like UWx Blade, especially if you stick with the MB Swamp.
Re: [DTB] ANT (Ad Nauseam Tendrils) Storm Combo
I agree with you Togores!against elves you only want to go off asap,i usually only side in a couple of CoV for a land and a discard spell...i will Side in a sweeper only if it's pyroclasm!

The main advantage of playing without Ad Nauseam is not playing Ad Nauseam. Also, more Tendrils. I'm not even sold on that sideboard Empty in Kai's list. But with the singleton Wish in the maindeck 2 Tendrils / 2 Past in Flames with Empty in the board is clearly better than 1 Tendrils / 1 Empty / 2 Past in Flames with Tendrils in the board. I'd like to have the third Tendrils in the 75 anyway.
Re: [DTB] ANT (Ad Nauseam Tendrils) Storm Combo
ad nauseam is basically only there to fight opposing combodecks and decks with discard.
I also bought 1 english foil gifts ungiven with the hope to use it in a storm deck. Why? Because it is fuckin awesome to both cast it and see your opponent struggling.
I woould rather include 1 gifts ungiven than the second tendrils. But this should be a new topic.

I would step back from adding a third card to the deck which relies heavily on the Graveyard like Cabal Ritual and PIF already do.
Anyways, this deck still needs access to some burst-playlines for it's turn 1 and 2 if you remove Ad Nauseam (I always hated the card in this deck).

Fully agree
Re: [DTB] ANT (Ad Nauseam Tendrils) Storm Combo
Got top 8 in the Scandinavian Open this weekend, the deck performed better than I expected it to (since I'm really not that good of a player), and I might write up a tournament report tomorrow, if anyone would be interested in reading.

Congrats on your performance. Would definitely love to read about your tournament experiences

followed the event online, definitely interested

I assume you mean that you always hated the Ad Nauseam regarding decklists.
Aside from that, my last tournament on Saturday was: Lands 2:1, ANT 2:0, ANT 2:0 and ID which means that I am bound to play this card in my meta in my main 60.
Re: [DTB] ANT (Ad Nauseam Tendrils) Storm Combo
Alright, tournament report is done. Ended up being a lot longer than I thought it would be, so I made a separate thread for it: http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/s...n-Febuary-2015

Looking for a better sideboard for my area. My area has lots of stompy (moggcatcher, dragon stompy, MUD) and delvers decks are the usually majority(these 2 archetypes usually are half the room of 40ish event size). There are also a handful of 12post and miracles players that tend to also show up at the larger events. The rest of the decks tend to be a mix of combo style and random decks thrown in there (We even had an Enchantress mirror at the last event).
Current Sideboard:
3 Abrupt Decay
2 Xantid Swarm
2 Carpet of Flowers
2 Dark Confidant
2 Chain of Vapor
2 Dread of Night
1 Tendrils of Agony
1 Hurkly's Recall
Thinking on changing the main board configuration and moving Ad nauseam to the side and putting Empty into the main. Other than those changes not sure what else I would want to do

I liked my list, the only card I'm not entirely certain on would be carpet of flowers, it's supposed to be vs the delver matchup, but I'm not sure how I feel about fetching non basics vs delver.
As far as your sideboard goes, I think looks pretty decent, though I'm not really a fan of dark confidant.

I tried it out at the last event because i was unsure of what I could use instead of them. They would normally be pyromancer since they usually have enough surprise factor and have given me some good wins.

3 Tendrils in the 75? Whats the line of thought behind this?
