Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Thanks guys. This is the list I'm going with tomorrow:
4 Deathrite Shaman
4 Dark Confidant
3 Stoneforge Mystic
2 Gatekeeper of Malakir
1 Shriekmaw
4 Swords to Plowshares
4 Inquisition of Kozilek
3 Lingering Souls
3 Thoughtseize
3 Liliana of the Veil
2 Zealous Persecution
2 Vindicate
1 Batterskull
1 Sword of Fire and Ice
1 Umezawa's Jitte
4 Marsh Flats
4 Wasteland
3 Verdant Catacombs
3 Scrubland
2 Swamp
2 Windswept Heath
2 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
1 Plains
1 Bayou
2 Rest in Peace
2 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
1 Surgical Extraction
1 Enlightened Tutor
1 Gaddock Teeg
1 Ethersworn Canonist
1 Humility
1 Oblivion Ring
1 Surgical Extraction
1 Engineered Explosives
1 Spirit of the Labyrinth
1 Pithing Needle
1 Phyrexian Revoker
MBSegal: I'm pretty good at not playing into counters, but while I'm waiting for that against BUG I get wasted or beaten down or my threats Decayed. It just seem too efficient with all the card drawing and hand disruption. I think Shriekmaw will help because it can kill a Delver or Goyf without being Pierced, but maybe it should be Mirran Crusader? Also, appreciate all the matchup tips — I definitely love the ability to fetch basics with this deck. So Vindicate isn't so bad vs. Miracles because of their lack of 3s? I guess that makes me feel better about that.
Megadeus: One of the reasons I decided to be the best Zealous deck I could be was because of the prevalence of Elves and infect in my meta. It's also pretty good against other creature decks, so why not jam it MB? There is a guy at my store who plays TES and always has it, but in other matchups against Storm players I've done pretty well because of heavy disruption early. Being free to fetch duals is very nice. I don't know if we can afford to be afraid of Massacre since Thalia/Ethersworn are so important postboard. Rather make them have it than play around, especially since we look at their hand a lot?
Wilkin: The cards you talked about in BUG are the reason I'm even more wary of this matchup post board. If they can stop RIP I think I have no trump card. Hopefully it's just too expensive for people to play.
-
Woof. Used the list above and went 1-3
Rd 1 infect: I rolled game 1, had him down to 2 in game 2 before he got there, then kept a 5 with no land in game 3. 7 had 1 hand, 6 had 3 wastelands.
Rd 2 tezz: no shot game 1, though I did ZP away a lot of thopters Tezz just made 5/5s. Game 2 I won decisively, he kept a slow hand and I had vindicate and wasteland to keep him off anything. Game 3 I kept the 1-land 7 and lost.
Rd 3 sneak&show: actually game 1 was most competitive here as I was able to blow up a sneak attack with vindicate and wasted him off blue. He eventually did get emrakul in. Game 2 was over fast.
Rd 4 turbofog: I was the only player with 0 pts because he actually had forced a draw. I won both games thanks to deathrite and him aggressively casting fonts of mythos and rites of flourishing instead of saving fog effects. Yes, I actually think i only beat turbofog because he didn't play it great. Yeesh.
I really think the deck is good and I'm still going to stick with it for the scg open in a month, it would just be nice to end up over .500. Zealous is such a beating. I guess my next little tweak is to to try some hymns? I also think I might want a 3rd vindicate.

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
I'm not a huge fan of double urborg there. Seems meh. Also I'd play 4 TS before I begin adding inquisition. TS takes sneak attack, fatties, jace, and opposing batterskulls. Also not a huge fan of gatekeeper, especially when you are already running shriekmaw and ZP
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Went 2-2 tonight with my list, though I was playing a singleton Mana Tithe for fun in place of a 3rd Hymn.
Lost to elves because it is tough to control the top of someones deck. I won G1 on the back of DRS into liliana and continued along the resource denial pla. Revoker names Wirewood when he played a T2 Visionary just in case. That was key later in the game when he top decked one, and lingering souls carrying a Jitte got there. Game 2 I lost to a top decked NO for Prog I believe, G3 I denied him mana by not fetching when he had 2x DRS, but eventually his symbiote + visionary got him a cradle and I got hoofed.
Beat Deathblade. G1 on the play I wasted his lands and he missed some lands drops (with no permanents in play) and revoker got him, he top decks a TNN and I was sandbagging a Lily. G2 he gets me simply off of me not really playing well. He had a Meddling Mage naming DRS, and I had a pithing needle naming lily which he had on board. My hand when I died was 2x DRS, 2x Lily. G3 he kept a 1 lander with a BS on the draw, I waste, he BS, doesnt find a land and scoops.
Lost to GW stompy maverick. Both games the basic plains screwed me over, though in G1 I double wasted him hoping he was light on lands. He wasnt. G2 I kept a 6 where my only 2 lands were waste and plains. I sfm up BSkull, he wastes my waste and I dont draw another land until he has BSkull, Chalice, and a KOTR.
Running this deck with Hymns and 4 waste is so awkward. I think Hymn might get the axe again. Shriekmaw has been surprisingly decent.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Not been liking Hymn for a while now.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Yeah not being able to fetch up basic plains a lot due to only having 1 fetch in order to hymn has sucked. I don't know if I really want to bring back sculler, but maybe inquisition plus something... Can't really think of another 2 drop other than maybe a third revoker, since gatekeeper doesnt really solve my colored mana issue. Maybe Gerrards Verdict? Seems bad. I guess maybe like 2 Inquisition, 1 Zealous Persecution? I hate that ZP is dead vs control and combo most of the time, but it randomly being an insane blowout might be worth it.

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Played a very small legacy tournament. 12 players. $30 entry fee, lol guaranteed prizes at 12 players. Ah yeah. Split Top 4 and got $130 credit which I used to get a Liliana of the Veil, Phyrexian Arena and a Transmute Artifact. Not bad for 30 bucks.
Round 1. Steve. Merfolk. 2-1.
My friend and ride to the event. Lol, he hates playing against me. Game 1, 12 Lingering Soul tokens and Jitte gets there. Game 2, a top deck spreading seas and swing for exact lethal. Game 3. He's stuck on one land. He does have a vial though but I'm able to power through with Bob and later Batterskull on a Lingering Soul token.
Round 2. Darcy. Omnitell. 2-0.
Although I don't like this matchup....neither does Darcy as I've beaten him the last 2 times we faced each other. Game 1, He's able to show and tell into Omniscience but no cards in hand because of Liliana and Hymn. Bob flips....Vindicate. Game 2. I have a Gaddock Teeg and a Stoneforge out....I then cast Liliana and we both pitch cards. He pitches Omniscience. I then Surgical it....he had another one in hand.
Round 3. Mike. Dredge. 2-1
Game 1 he mulls to 3. And I play a deathrite. Game 2. He has the faithless Looting and LED hand. Game 3. I play bob turn 1 and pass. He plays Faithless looting and discards 2 dredgers. I flip...Rest in Peace. GG.
Round 4. Richard. ID.
I'm the first seed...
Round 5. Brian. UR Delver. 2-0
A matchup I'm not fond of. Game 1, I cast a turn 1 Stoneforge. I get Jitte and already have a Batterskull and SOFI in hand. He probes and bolts the stoneforge. My turn I cast SOFI and pass. He's able to play Delver and Goblin guide in one turn...but then I topdeck Bob and able to equip to SOFI so he can't kill it. Bob with Jitte and SOFI, lol that's game.
Game 2 he keeps a one lander. Mountain, plenty of one mana burn and sulfuric vortex. He doesn't kill my deathrite and goes for the burn to the face. I go for the vindicate and wasteland every land strategy. I'm able to keep him off lands for a turn or 2, long enough for me to hardcast Batterskull. He tries to Smash later it but I'm able to bounce it back to hand, and then replay. Batterskull and Deathrite shocks get there. And even if he played a dude, it was gonna die as I ended with an Engineered Explosives, Gatekeeper and Shriekmaw in hand.
Happy the way the deck performed. MVP today was Vindicate. It was mostly stone rain but that's ok. My backup deck was lent to a friend and he top 4'd as well. Explorer Pod. Glad I didn't have to face that deck. Gaddock Teeg redeemed himself from Detroit and was a thorn in the side of Omnitell. He'll stay in the deck for now... And of Course, Bob was well, Bob.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Nice! Vindicate is super sweet. I'm thinking of adding a second one personally

And you are still using that list posted pages ago? I must be really unlucky with drawing then. I only have mediocre success with it online. Or I suck at piloting.
Awesome result as always

Hi,
Oh right the list. It's the same one that's on Starcitygames and on TC decks. I didn't change my list at all From Detroit since it did fairly well. Considered moving out Gaddock Teeg but left him in and he did alright. LOL, the way Wizards is going I won't have to wait long for them to print a hate bear to my liking.
I do get extremely lucky in topdecking. Vindicate to get rid of Omniscience....and he looked at his next card, he would have pondered into Enter the Infinite. And RIP against Dredge. I also have the knack for getting my one ofs when I need them.

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Thats kinda what you have to do when you are playing a non brainstorm fair deck. Hope and pray. Sometimes you get there, sometimes you don't.

Yeah pretty much.
Bob and SOFI kinda of help but yeah, Variance happens.

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Starcity games report Detroit. 13th out of 225. 6-2 record....
Round 1. Von. Lands. 2-0.
LOL. So I played the Legacy trial the day before and was 3 wins and a draw....playing Explorer Pod (which was fun BTW beating up on decks with no basics). My draw was against Von playing Lands. So we meet again in the main event, LOL the only player ever to put me on a deck that isn't Deadguy. Game 1, I land an early Batterskull and Mystic. He has the Punishing Fire combo online but I play too many threats, including Hero of Bladehold. Sadly, he had 2 Punishing Fires and I couldn't live the dream. The Hero was fodder to allow Batterskull to bash to victory.
Game 2. I thoughtseize and see he has the Thespian Stage and Dark Depth combo in hand. He plays stage and passes. I topdeck Surgical Extraction and have Wasteland already in hand. Ah yeah.
Round 2. Josh. Sneak Show. 2-1.
Game 1, he sneak attacks Emrakul. Boo urns. I had the Shriekmaw in hand first turn.
Game 2. He show and tells Emrakul and Shriekmaw does his thing.
Game 3. My hate bears do the beatdown. He cantrips into nothing for a while until he Pyroclasms. He's able to show and tell Griselbrand (i put in Shriekmaw again and kills a lingering soul token) but he's at less than 7 life. So when I vindicate Griselbrand, he's not able to dig for an answer.
Round 3. Peter. Tezzerator 1-2.
A local from where I'm at. I have a first turn Mystic but he's got the Thopter combo in hand.
Game 2. Bob first turn. I'm able to wasteland and Vindicate anything he plays while Bob beats him down.
Game 3. Bob First turn again. But Ensnaring Bridge topdeck and tezzeret's (he plays both) are too much for me to handle.
Round 4. Alex. Storm. 0-2.
Game 1. Mull to 4. I do play bob 2nd turn. But it's storm, and he tendrils for close to lethal and allows my 2 bobs to kill me.
Game 2. Mana screw. He does a good play and discards the Deathrite Shaman early instead of other stuff like Liliana.
I'm out of top 8 contention and on tilt. But I decide I can still at least make it in the money. So I stay in.
Round 5. Mounte. Burn 2-1.
Game 1. I see all 3 Mystics. Batterskull. GG.
Game 2 and 3 I don't really remember too much. I think I may have vindicated a bunch of lands in game 3.
Round 6. David. Esperblade 2-0.
Game 1. I land a turn 2 Bob and for 6 or 7 turns he deals....no damage. The players beside me even noticed.
Game 2. I have too much removal for him to deal with.
Round 7. David. Young Pyromancer build, didn't see Edric. 2-1.
game 1. Boardstate at the end. 3 Delvers and 1 Deathrite vs....8 Lingering Soul Tokens and 3 Deathrites. Pretty absurd. It was a slow grind. Essentially I negated his Deathrite, while eating just about everything in the GY's.
Game 2. Early Delvers and burn and Pyromancer are way too much.
Game 3. Epic Grind fest. I'm able to cast and equip Jitte to a Lingering Soul Token and go to town on his elemental tokens and Pyromancer.
Deathrite eating GY battles are absurd btw.
Round 8. Ben. BUG Delver. 2-0
A local from where I'm at. We face each other in top 8's in Toronto a lot of late, unfortunately not the case here.
I stomp him game 1. My life total didn't even change.
Game 2. 3 wastelands and a Vindicate in a row get rid of his manabase. I'm also able to get rid of his Sylvan Library with an EE. I know he has Decay in hand but he's tapped out. He dazes so I only have one mana open if I pay. I pay....and then play a Chrome Mox so I can blow up the Library now.
Made 13th which is alright. I've only played one other Starcity and placed 63rd, 2012 in Buffalo. Onto Syracuse so hopefully I can make it to a top 8 finish. The only card I was dissapointed in was Gaddock Teeg. I had him in my hand in losses to Storm and Tezzerator. If I was able to cast him, things might have been different.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Did you simply not have the correct colors to cast him? How many green sources do you run?

Didn't have the correct colors to cast him...meaning no green. I only run one bayou and 3 deathrites. Teeg is obviously only going in vs combo decks, which for the most part don't run wasteland. I figured that manabase is enough, seeing as I run 7 fetches.
He did poorly at Detroit but at the last tournament Saturday, he was fine. Against Omnitell, which made it a bit harder to combo off and kill me. Teeg is staying in for now.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Kinda like the extra sources of green to be Horizon Canopy. A white mana source that still can cast deathrite shaman on turn1.

Only issue I see there is that it can't be fetched up with a fetch land.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Sure but its not like its replacing any current fetch lands in the decks but rather the plains after the first.

Thats fair. I simply would rather have Karakas as my Flex land I guess.
Also went 3-1-1 tonight. Dropped the 3 Hymns from my list and played 2 Inquisition and went to 3 Revokers. Meh. Basically every game I boarded out the Inquisitions. I like my Sideboard a lot, but my MD I can't quite get happy with. Unsure of what to do for this weekend.
Beat Mono White Aggro R1. Lost to UWR Delver R2 because he nut drew me in G3. Beat Deathblade, then drew with Lands, though we played when we ID'd and I won 2 games vs him. T8 I played UWR Delver again, and won. G2 he had the Delver, natural flip, Daze Double spell pierce while wasting me hand. G3 I got down to 1 life with a bob with a jitte, and had to pray for a few turns to not die to Shriekmaw/BSkull off of Bob. I got there in the end. I'm not sure if I should be keeping in 4x Bob vs them, also I have been boarding out 2-3 Thoughtseizes vs them as well. The third revoker was meh.
Interesting line of the night: I have DRS and 2 lands in play, I thoughtseize my Deathblade opponent, see: Bob, Thoughtseize, Brainstorm, Batterskull, 2x Lands. My hand has like Bob, STP, Liliana, Lingering Souls, and lands. What do you take? I chose Brainstorm since I have multiple removal for Bob so he can't thoughtseize it all away, then played my own bob. Right play?
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Taking thoughtseize is also a line to take to get liliana rolling.

True. I ended up taking BS, playing bob, he Thoughtseized my liliana, then played his own bob. Then I simply STP'd his bob and mine won me the game. Honestly there are multiple lines since my hand was obviously like the nuts, but I figure, in this MU, the worst that could have happened here was him brainstorming into like a TNN and throwing a Jitte on it or something stupid like that, so I just made it so we would both be top decking, except I would have active Bob.

Liliana is thought one of the best things we can do against truename. If him doing storm into tnn is the worst he can do then Thoughtseize would be the best card to take. Already got the responce for tnn there. :P

True. I guess my hand was lacking an answer to it if he rips it off the top like a champ and I am durdling around drawing irrelevant cards with Bob.

What had he done on his first turn? Ponder/tapped Tar Pit? Can't believe you were allowed to untap with an active DRS without getting seized.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
I believe he did ponder. Which I guess means he probably drew seize off of ponder

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Anyone got advice against those three colored cascade deck? You know, with ancestral recall. Whenever I fail to draw at least two wastelands early game it seems like they just overrun me.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Haven't played the MU yet, but it seems kinda rough. As what my usual plan is vs fair decks, I'd say your best plan is to land a Bob after stripping their removal and just try to out CA them.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
A card thats rly strong against the cascade creatures are lifebane zombie as it hit both bloodbraid and shardless agent. Even seen some other have that card in some boards and pretty sure that is what they used the card for. Considering cascade decks are currently decks to beat. Having a card that is able to snatch them can really make or break the matchup.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
I dont hate the card. May try it out at some point when I stop using the ETutor SB

DGA vs TA on camera now at scg open. Last round, both players 6-1

Congrats Megadeus. 2nd seed too. nice. Can't wait to see the match on replay tonight and a tournament report.
LOL, a friend messaged me that he saw Deadguy Ale on camera using Shriekmaw. I immediately thought someone saw my list on TC decks or Starcity or is a Sourcer, because Maindeck Shriekmaw is very fringe.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
To bad he faced up with the only spell combo deck of storm there..
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Both players kept mediocre hands gane 3, but unfortunately Megadeus missed a few swings with his DRS and storm comboed at 1 life after ripping runner runner

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Question is how good where the Stillmoon?
Hymn compared to other discard like Cabal Therapy with them Lingering Souls?
And hoqw good where the revokers main?
And did you get to use the choke?
And did you miss having extra removal for all them Delvers like Disfigures?
Gz to top8! Keep up the work!

Just watched the feature match. Glad to see the Shriekmaw on camera.
How was the Pontiff? I've considered putting one in the board as well. And where do those Spirit tokens come from? The Starcity ones of course. I've never seen those before and they look really cool.

Thanks guys! Ill write up a report maybe tomorrow or something. I'd like to thank Wilkin for the Shriekmaw tech as well as your list inspired me to run the second vindicate which was AWESOME all day. Stone Rain was very good all day. And Nedleeds for the Stillmoon tech. Again, didn't actually draw it much, but it was a fine card.
Stillmoon was fine. Like I didn't draw it too much, but having an oreo colored true name to randomly draw is nice. I can't think of any games where I even cast it this weekend (just because it always got discarded)
Hymn as compared to therapy: I do like therapy a lot. However, the number of times you derp discard all of their good stuff with Hymn is awesome. I cited mana issues to why I cut it before, however I added it back in as a good card vs essentially everything other than aggro, since my SB for fair decks was a bit underwhelming. I wouldn't tell anyone that wants to play
Therapy is wrong though.
Revoker I liked a lot. Segal hates it. Most people don't play it, I like having it vs combo. It was clutch in allowing me to win multiple game ones vs ANT and Sneak and Show.
I cast choke once all day, and it won the game. As it almost always does. Wouldn't cut it as it is one of the best cards to drop vs miracles.
Instead of like disfigure, I had the 4 STP and shriekmaw, which is way better vs Spell Pierce and Tarmogoyf. Also I dont generally care about delver. Not only do I have removal, Lingering souls destroys the card.
Like I said, I was feeling it all weekend, keeping bad hands and getting rewarded because apparently, some god, somewhere, wanted me to win. I'll write up something in much more detail tomorrow. Thanks guys!
Edit: Pontiff did get boarded in more than ZP actually, however again I don't think I ever cast it (such is what happens to random non tutorable 1-ofs in a non brainstorm deck)

My adventures in 2-2ing continued tonight. I ran this list with a couple changes:
http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/s...618#post808618
Main: -1 Shriekmaw, -2 IoK, +1 SDT, +2 Hymn
Side: -1 Surgical extraction, +1 Pithing Needle
Rd 1: tezzaffinitythopters. I had no clue what to do here except pray to draw Zealous Persecution. In game 2 I windmilled a Needle on Thopter Foundry turn 1. I don't know if that was wrong. he had it, but he also had cranial plating and etched champion and artifact lands so whatever. I think if i had it to do over again i would've needled Plating because I have other outs to Foundry like zealous, EE, etc.
Rd 2: 12post. I won game 1, lost game 2 after a mull to 6, then lost game 3. In game 3 i had revoker on Expedition Map and Needle on Eye of Ugin, then played Humility. My opponent thought it was the other way around and fetched an Ulamog with Eye. I didn't remember until his next draw step that it was illegal. We called a judge, he ended up shuffling Ulamog, peeling repeal, bouncing my needle and fetching Ulamog anyway to blow up Humility. Whatever again.
Rd. 3: Food Chain. Game 1 was hilarious — he tidespout tyranted away my whole board, but i peeled STP and was able to rebuild. Game 2 he tidespout tyranted away my whole board and I didn't peel STP. Game 3 I had a sword of fire and ice on Thalia and two active DRS.
Rd. 4: UR delver. My opponent seemed a little mull-happy. He went to 6 game 1, then I IoK'd turn 1, took his only action (TNN) then won. Game 2 I kept a five-lander and almost got there but flipped Souls to Bob when I was at 3. Game 3 was an epic stalemate: I had an active Jitte, but he had double bolt open and TNN in play so even though i kept getting counters I never felt comfortable going for the win. He also played Blood Moon which kept me off Gatekeeper mana which was super annoying. Eventually I punched through enough times with Souls to win with myself at 3.
I believe in the deck still but man my store's meta is wonky. I just wish I got to play against Delver and Deathblade like everyone else.
