Re: TinFins 3: Return of the Onion Burst
It matters what cantrips. With Brainstorm you can put the Griz back and entomb it for extra value, but if it's Ponder there's a different line. Likewise, if it's Therapy as the discard spell and the cantrips is Probe, the play is more obvious. More details, more accurate lines of play. Also, in this deck you can keep a hand of cantrips, turn 1 brainstorm into petal, rit, goryo's/entomb (whichever you need) and just give you the turn 1 play.
From my phone. I do my best, dammit!

That all makes total sense, thanks.
I should get the different lines, and how different cards add up in a hand to form a gameplan when I get more games under my belt.
Just casually Brainstorming into the turn one kill has shown up once, so I'll have to definitely keep that in mind. Having Probe/Therapy is its own little reward, too.
Re: TinFins 3: Return of the Onion Burst
As much as I would despise completely beaten cards, I would love to play such cards in a Tin Fins deck XD. For now, my most "pimp" and trolling card is my Portuguese foil Goryo's. I heard those are rare
However, I will probably get all of my cards altered (just not the Grisels, cause I love the Promo art).
Greetings,
Kathal
Re: TinFins 3: Return of the Onion Burst
Well the good news for me is that Tin Fins shares a shit ton of cards with other decks I play (DDFT/storm variants mostly), so I get to share pretty cards. :)
Re: TinFins 3: Return of the Onion Burst
Ok, here is a pic of the deck including the sideboard. Hopefully you can see it... I'm a signature guy (I know a lot of people aren't) - I'm only about half done with this deck. I had a bunch more ready to send out to get signed a while back, but life kinda got in the way and I haven't gotten back to it yet. I also did a poor job of not putting the Chain of Vapor on top of the pile there, as that is signed too. And the Ponder signatures don't show up very well in that lightning because they are in gold pen. Obviously extremely unlikely that there are any signed Russian Children of Korlis in existence, so I'm probably fucked there. Anyway, yeah, here it is in it's current state.

And upon actually looking at the picture on a monitor... it sucks and isn't very clear. I'll do it with a better camera sometime if anyone cares. I mean, you can't even tell what language the duals are in!! (all French, for what it's worth)
Re: TinFins 3: Return of the Onion Burst
I piloted Tinfins to a 3-0-1 finish at Mox Boarding House last night. Drew in the finals with a friend and then won the match for fun that we played. I've got to say that this deck is the most fun I've had in a while. Here's the list I played:
2 Scalding Tarn
2 Misty Rainforest
2 Verdant Catacombs
2 Polluted Delta
1 Marsh Flats
1 Watery Grave
1 Underground Sea
1 Scrubland
1 Bayou
1 Island
4 Griselbrand
1 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
1 Children of Korlis
4 Brainstorm
4 Ponder
4 Gitaxian Probe
4 Entomb
4 Shallow Grave
4 Dark Ritual
4 Lotus Petal
3 Cabal Therapy
3 Exhume
2 Thoughtseize
1 Chrome Mox
1 Mox Diamond
1 Reanimate
1 Tendrils of Agony
SB:
2 Defense Grid
3 Silence
3 Abrupt Decay
3 Pithing Needle
2 Surgical Extraction
2 Massacre
Round 1: Maverick
I start the match off on the play. I play a land and pass. He plays a Savannah, Noble Hierarch, and passes. I figure he's on maverick or maybe some Bant list. I combo out turn 2 leading with a Therapy naming Force, which he doesn't have, and Tendrils for the win. Game 2 I shave some probes and ponders for 2 Massacre and 2 Abrupt Decay. He sticks a turn 2 Thalia, I get the mana to decay it, he plays Mom, and I forget to do it before passing my turn. I scoop. I stay with the same board plan for game 3 and kill him turn 2 when he casually reveals to me that his plan is to play a turn 2 Knight and tutor for Maze of Ith.
1-0 (2-1)
Round 2: BUG Nic Fit?
This was a cakewalk. I open a turn 2 kill with Tendrils after getting my Entomb forced turn 1. Cabal Therapy to myself coupled with drawing Grizzlebees off the top got there. I board out 2 probes, a ponder, and a blue fetch since I don't think he has Wasteland and I bring in 2 Defense Grid and 2 Silence. I cast a turn 1 Defense Grid which he forces and kill him the next turn with 22 damage. I got to see a grand total of like ten cards in his deck so I don't even know what he was playing.
2-0 (4-1)
Round 3: Jeskai Ascendancy combo
I knew what he was playing when we sat down at the table because I've played him previously. I figure this matchup might give me trouble, but it didn't. I'm able to turn 2 kill him after taking his Force of Will turn 1. I board out the same four cards as last match and bring in 2 Defense Grid, 1 Abrupt Decay, and 1 Surgical. We start game two. He plays a land, Ponder, and pass. I have a nuts hand. I open with land, Dark Ritual, Entomb. He forces the Entomb. I had a second Entomb in my hand, which I cast and it resolves, dumping Grizzlebees. I play a Lotus Petal and crack it to Shallow Grave, and the game ends with a Tendrils for lethal. Turn 1 kill through his Force of Will. That was my proudest moment. I did Probe him and see a Flusterstorm, so my guess is he Pondered into it, but I'm confused as to why he wouldn't protect it by leaving it on top of his library when he couldn't cast it anyways. If he would have forced anything but my Entomb during game two I probably would have lost.
3-0 (6-1)
Round 4: Grixis Pyro
We ID at the start of the round, but decide to play it out for fun. Game 1 we both played God awfully. He keeps a zero lander on the play and passes after Probing me and not finding a land. I attempt to go off turn 1 and forget I don't have a reanimation spell in my hand. There's a lot of draw-discard-go until I finally found an Exhume and got there. I board in 2 Defense Grid and 2 Silence and take out 2 Ponder, 1 Probe, and a land. The game gets a bit grindy, until I attempt to go off. I think it was turn 3. He has 3 cards in hand. I cast Silence, which he Forces. I figure that I can call his bluff and try and go off... Or get wrecked. I attempt to Shallow Grave a Griselbrand, which gets met with Flusterstorm. Young Peezy and his friends kill me after that. Game 3 I attempt to go off early by casting Defense Grid. He responds with Brainstorm, tapped out. I should have responded with Shallow Grave, because in retrospect, if he had the Force, he would have just cast it without Brainstorming right away. Defense Grid resolves, I cast Shallow Grave, he scoops.
3-0-1 (6-1-X) or 4-0 (8-2)
I had a lot of fun with the deck. In previous play testing, I really liked Exhume because I found that I did brick fairly often. Luckily that didn't happen that night, but still. I need to fix the spread of fetches because Scalding Tarn should be any other black fetch. I was very surprised how compact the combo is and how resource-light it was. In the future I might try a 3:2 spread of Grizzlebees/Children rather than 4:1. Another reason I liked Exhume was, multiple times I had Entomb and Exhume in my hand as the only way of sacrificing Children. If those were Goryo's, I would have had several bricks. I hadn't seen Defense Grid in many of the sideboards, but boy, it was the house. Either it resolves and I win, or they counter it and I win. I played a Watery Grave because I didn't have a second Underground Sea. In these matches it made zero difference.
All hail based onion burst.

This was actually the first Legacy deck I've completed. I've had to borrow cards every time I played Legacy in paper but I finished out the list at GenCon this year. I don't really care what language the cards are in as long as they are not English. Should have 4 Japanese Masques Brainstorms coming in soon!

Eh, come back when you get Laotian Goryo's Vengeances.

Played in a local event with the above 75. Ending up getting 4th after going 3-1. Lost to Miracles (super tight game 3) and then beat 4C Delver, Manaless Dredge, and Burn. Dig Through Time was a test slot and is now going to be a Dark Petition the next time I get to play.
Re: TinFins 3: Return of the Onion Burst
I'm still very new to the deck - had this situation come up last night, and I'm wondering what the 'right' line (in a vacuum) was:
Game two against Grixis Delver. You've both kept seven, you're on the play. My opening hand is
Swamp, Dark Ritual, Entomb, Entomb, Goryo's Vengeance, Cabal Therapy, Ponder.
Re: TinFins 3: Return of the Onion Burst
YOLO!
There is only a 40% or so chance your opponent has the FoW.
I think the question rather is if that hand is a keeper or not. It's a one-trick pony and after his T1 all of his 10+ counters are online. You'd have to fight Daze, Spell Pierce and possibly DRS (depending on the list). The hand you present isn't quite capable of doing so succesfully.

Re: TinFins 3: Return of the Onion Burst
That hand is amazing and there is no way in hell I'd ship it back. You have a protected kill on T2, it's not even a debate. This is what I would do:
T1: Swamp, Pass. Fire off the first entomb on opponent's end step to bait a counter if they have it.
T2: Hopefully you draw a land or a petal, if so play it first to play around Daze. Then Dark Ritual. If they countered Entomb 1, then Entomb -> Vengeance. If Entomb 1 resolved, you can cast Therapy first for FoW, then Vengeance, or have the mana open to hopefully take the Griselbees + Emrakul line in your combat step as you already have a second entomb in hand.
Re: TinFins 3: Return of the Onion Burst
Likewise. That hand is pure onion bursts.
From my phone. I do my best, dammit!

This new Mulligan rule gives us a boost.
Re: TinFins 3: Return of the Onion Burst
Anyone else bursting onions at Eternal Weekend tomorrow?
Re: TinFins 3: Return of the Onion Burst
So, five years ago (when I quit MTG for the 3rd time) I sold off 80% of my collection. The 20% I did keep included one deck, Faerie Stompy, and some random randomness. I never once played Legacy in the interim, so keeping a deck intact was more of a "Have a gun and not need it than need a gun and not have it" kinda thing. Anyway, three weeks ago I dug out the old boxes with full intentions of liquidating the remainder of my cards. Well, flipping through old binders, rumaging through dusty boxes, and discovering the shells of past decks (minus the money rares) was a bit more nostagia than I could handle. I proceeded to spend the entire weekend sorting cards, researching current decks, reading articles and yadda, yadda, yadda, I'm in over $500 building Tin Fins.
I haven't played combo since ProsBloom, so I'm having a blast with it. Been playing around with a fairly standard build to start out with. Not so sure I'm feeling the LDVs, and having a difficult time dropping the 2nd Children for some reason, but other than that I'm totally wishing I had less fun playing Legacy sooner. Looking forward to hanging out and talking Magic again, too!

But what about Surgical?! These are the situations that drive me crazy...someone keeps 7 and I'm not sure what hate to play around. I still think it's an auto-keep and that your line is correct. Any mana source or Probe on turn 2 makes you pretty safe with between Therapy and the second Entomb.
Re: TinFins 3: Return of the Onion Burst
Don't worry, no one ever has surgical. And if they do... well, I guess you got got.
Also KSC - welcome to the church of Griselbrand. :)
