Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Nothing too noteworthy from the tournament, other than using surgical extraction to screw up sensei's divining top draw ability. He still draws a card, but not likely the card he was hoping to get. Elves is a good match up for me. I pack s ton of board wipes post board. They usually play progenitus in the board... But I'm not worried. I have a councils judgment, humility and lol I suppose deluge works. Nice, hope u do well in Atlanta. Since u have a shriekmaw, I have some tech u may or may not know..... OK say u have it in hand and opponent has narcomoeba in play with bridges in yard. U can evoke putting the terror ability on stack first. Evoke trigger second. When it resolves....bridges go, then narcomoeba dies and they get no zombies. Lol. I know corner case but I've done it.

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
I think he has Bob and Lily in there (probably 4 and 2 respectively) I just didn't ask about that composition. The -1 Equip, -1 SFM, comes from trying to max Hawk for testing. Unsure where the other slots came from (possibly a sculler?)
The ZP spam was brutal though; as people don't often play around combat tricks in Legacy because they're so rare or are a bluff. E.G. I fell for it once double-blocking a sculler with SFM and DRS, planning on getting my card back (BSK) to drop with another SFM. Instead he ZP'd and simply 2-for-1'd me. It also was a lot of evasive damage.
I had tried a concept similar to this about a year ago but my deck was a lot more clunky since I was new to the archtype; blood moon spam at the shop put a stop to my testing too.

he beat a pair of Junk decks (including me) and I'm unsure on the other MUs. This seems like it'd have strong interaction with elves. I suspect the list is missing Bob, Lily, and probably a pair of vindicates. But, if you notice the deck swarms pretty hard and can survive multiple -1/-1 effects while always having more flyers. It was pretty obnoxious to face.
You know who I bet really finds Squadron Hawk obnoxious? Miracles. Just always keep one in your hand and let the termini flow.

Didn't think about that interaction. Thanks for the tip. Shriekmaw is still just a nice solid piece of removal.
As for revokers, I haven't played much in the past few weeks but last night naming a SoLaS after am opponent fetches it up was nice. Also it just is randomly solid against elves to turn off Wirewood or Ranger who may be preventing you from accumulating jitte counters

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Super Pumped went 4-0 last night as local Legacy event. The list i played was the follows
lands
4x Wasteland
4x Scrubland
4x Marsh Flats
2x Windswept Heath
3x Swamp
2x Plains
1x Urborg Tomb of Yagmoth
Non Creature Spells
4x Swords to Plowshares
4x Hymn to Tourach
3x Thoughtseize
1x Inquisition of Kozilek
2x Vindicate
1x Sensei's Divining Top
3x Lilliana of the Veil
1x Batterskull
1x Jitty
1x Sword of Fire and Ice
Creatures
3x Mother of Ruins
4x TideHallow Sculler
4x Stoneforge Mystic
4x Dark Confidant
3x Serra Avenger
1x Brimaz
Sideboard
3x Leyline of the Void
2x Engineered Plague
1x Toxic Deluge
2x Spirit of the Labyrith
1x Engineered Explosives
2x Perish
1x Bile Blight
2x Rule of Law
1x Disenchant
Round 1 (Fetchless Burn) This was alot easier than I thought It was going to be because this guy was new but at the same time he seemed unfamiliar with most cards but once batterskull was going he couldnt win I just stripped most of his hand game 1. Game 2 i stabilized turn 4 and I still had 10 life so once again when I got batterskull he couldnt do much
Round 2(dredge Manaless) this was an auto loss game 1 but game 2 and 3 i mulliganed down to A leyline of the Void and after that he just scooped both games.
Round 3(BUG delver) this match was a battle he won game 1 off 2 blind flip delvers that I couldnt find answers for. Game 2 was a nuts my notes dont make a ton of sense but it was a back and forth affair it came down to both of us top decking and I won that fight because I got top going earlier in the game. Game 3 honestly could have gone either way but he missed his delver trigger early in the game really set him behind. Also he spent alot of resources trying to fight my Top and Spirit of the Labs which suprised me because it allowed me to land a stoneforge and a serra avenger. which in time got me there in the end.
Round 4( U/r Burn) this wasnt close Game 1 he mulliganed down to 4 and i just out powered him with Bobs and Stoneforge's. Game 2 I dont know what he was thinking I was playing but after a turn 3 Hymn resolved and he boarded in a REB i was super confused. Once again I pushed threw a Serra Avenger with a Sword of Fire and Ice for the win.
just like to share my triumphs it was a good night love this archetype

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Went 2-1-1 tonight. First non ID draw I've had in a loooong time. Can't help playing against slower players in grindy match ups though.
Beat Sneak and Show. He keeps a hand of 2 sol lands, Show and tell, ponder, sneak attack, emrakul, and force. I TS him, taking Show and tell. He draws a petal and ponders. Next turn plays something after my Bob and he plays his sneak attack. I vindicate sneak attack then keep applying pressure and he eventually gets show and tell for emrakul but I have Liliana ftw. G2 he keeps another sketchy hand and I TS away a sneak attack while he has like 3 emrakuls and something else and just beat him to death after I vindicate his sol land leaving him on a single misty. I just don't see how people win with Sneak and Show. It's so damn inconsistent.
Beat Death and Taxes in a long game that went to turns but I was able to win the equipment war thanks to timely draws of disenchant.
Lost to esper deathblade. Mull to 5 in G1 and could've come back if I have drawn more than 1 land. G2 I mull to 6 but again a 1 lander and I only draw one more land but he has double waste and I die. Such is variance.
Drew with Death and Taxes. After a 30 minute game 1 where he got double mom with thalia but no real pressure, a naturally cast Batterskull forced his moms to play defense and I STP'd then vindicated them and eventually took it. Game 2 I got in a great position when I ripped EPlague to name human while he has 2 Mom and a Thalia. He is forced to play cataclysm keeping Jitte, a plains and another plains (from Flagstones) to my Batterskull, Scrubland, Germ token, and EPlague and it looked like I was going to take him down but he had a stoneforge for manriki the turn before I could kill him and we have to grind for a bit more and I lose in turn 5 to his mirran crusader with a SoFaI and Jitte to force the ID. I think if we had a G3 I would have been favored. I have a decent amount of experience in the MU and his build was especially soft to Zealous if I ever drew one. The one really annoying card was crusader in both DnT MU's.

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
With the power of lingering dwilling with main decked deluge, golgari charm and strong board options massacre and dread of night cant relie on them to much anymore. Thought now lies puting a couple dread of night in the board such a unfair tutor target. It does so much against DNT.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Are you saying you are thinking of cutting Lingering Souls, then adding in Dread of Night to the SB? I personally still think souls is one of the best things that we can be doing in the fair MU's, but maybe in a meta full of DnT or something you could try that out?
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
I agree with Megadeus im planning on putting Lingering Souls back in my list because it helps with some of the fair MU and with delver getting popular again its turning into an almost needed

After rereading what I wrote, I see why it looks confusing :P I really liked souls when playing with sorin as the emblem made them in to a strong threat. But most of the time they feel like better fog. Best aplications against liliana. I currently run 2 in the main. Got lot of mixed feelings about them. Maybe they just dont fit my packrat version.
Been thinking of adding an extra green source instead of the 4 th scrubland to be able to add a couple of abrubt decays to the deck.
My version of the deck run 25 lands.
4 scrublands
1 bayou
4 bloodstained mire
4 marsh flats
1 karakas
1 plain
2 swamp
4 mutavault
4 wasteland
I run minimal amount of double black and no double white cards.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Okay that make sense I don't splash Green I'm only W/B
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Bayou ia there only for deathrite atm
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
I run 2 bayou and I've tried abrupt decay main, too often I couldn't play them because i was missing green. Also my sideboard choke has been sitting in my hand a couple of times. Maybe that’s just my bad luck but i don't think that two green sources are enough, if I would try abrupt decay again I would at least paly a third source and possibly even a fourth.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Any time I board in choke, I make it a point to either save a fetch land, or fetch the single bayou early. Generally I'm really only bringing it in against decks that don't play wasteland anyway so it's not a big deal to fetch it early
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Do you play a single bayou main? or double? and would you run Decays main with that?
I've had this problem multiple times, generally I need to fetch a Scrubland first and a second fetch does not always show up. As i said, maybe this is just my bad luck.
And you don't board in choke vs delver decks then? I’ve experienced that delver decks board out their FoW often after seeing my hymns, allowing me to board in choke and steel a game with it (that is, if I can find green)
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
I play one bayou. If I wanted decay I'd play two and probably a Savannah. I don't board it vs delver usually but maybe I should. I randomly brought it in vs a 5 Color deck and ravaged him on turn 2.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
During the last tournament I felt difficult against Jund, so I decided to tweak the list a bit. Starting with the Megadeus list I put in
+1 Sensei's Divining top
+2 Phyrexian Obliterator (the creature, that would be most problematic for Jund and BUG in my opinion)
I cut:
-1 Spirit of the Labyrinth
-1 Sorin
-1 Revoker
the second revoker was changed earlier for the 3rd Hymn. Shriekmaw was cut, as I don't like playing 61 cards. Now the list looks like this:
4 Deathrite Shaman
4 Dark Confidant
4 Stoneforge Mystic
2 Phyrexian Obliterator
4 Thoughtseize
3 Liliana of the Veil
3 Vindicate
3 Lingering Souls
1 Sensei's Divining top
1 Umezawa's Jitte
1 Batterskull
1 Sword of Fire and Ice
3 Hymn to Tourach
4 Swords to Plowshares
3 Scrubland
1 Bayou
4 Marsh Flats
2 Windswept Heath
2 Polluted Delta
1 Bloodstained Mire
1 Karakas
1 Fetid Heath
2 Swamp
1 Plains
4 Wasteland
After that I didn't have opportunity to play with Jund, but made some life testing:
3-0 against DnT preboard
3-2 against Shardless preboard; 1-1 postboard
1-4 against Miracles preboard
The side is close to Megadeus', but I changed 2 perish for 2 Revokers and immidiately felt this with Shardless after boarding, where perish would win me a couple of situations, in case I board it in instead of RIP.
And almost forgot, during testing I made a couple of videos of my games which I thought I could share. Here are 3 games with shardless bug. Unfortunately I lost 2 of these 3 games =)
preboard game, postboard game 1, postboard game 2 (it is cut due to a 25 minute camera limit, but it is clear, that I win eventually in 1 or 2 turns). Sorry for some slow-play and limited visibility, but it was a Sunday home testing with tea, cat and music =)
Also I have 2 videos with Miracles, but the games are long, boring and hopeless...

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Interesting take. I like obliterator. Did you ever find yourself unable to cast it? Between wasteland, a plains and a karakas it seems awkward. The miracles and shardless match ups are both matches where sorin is real good. Also revoker is solid against miracles. How have you liked 3 hymn? I found it to be too much personally, but I also was always worried about top decking it late game.

Used to play obliterator. Too hard to cast for me. Lol, it was a house in some matchups like say burn. But ever since I went to hero, I didn't go back. Taking out a gym main to put in another thought seize. And putting a one mana removal in board...still deciding between path, innocent blood or dismember. Want to lower curve a bit in my deck...
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
What do you run for sideboard?
I always thought the BUG matchup was prety bad, but you put up quite ok results. Any tips for me on the machup? i supose the obliterator helps there?

I'd take path since the decks you want it against, like delver, don't run basics, and you don't want more life loss against them with dismember.

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
I like the discussions going on over the past page or two.
How do you tweak this deck to face delver variants (mainly BUG, UR, and Patriot)?
I'm also expecting some amount of Miracles.
I lack ports (can't go DnT or Black and Taxes). I think Bob is just too solid to neglect right now.
Every time I make a list it never comes together the way I want. This is my rough sketch
4 Vial
4 STP
4 Thoughtseize
3 Liliana of the Veil
1 Jitte
1 Sword of fire/ice
1 Batterskull or Sword of x/y #2
/18 stuff
4 Mom
4 Stoneforge Mystic
4 Dark Confidant
3 Serra Avenger ----> appears to be house against Delver and TNN
4 Flex
/18 guys
*Flex = DRS, Sculler, Thalia, KotR, Mirran, Hero, Brimaz, Lingering Souls
4 Wasteland
1 Karakas
18 additional lands
/23 lands
===
Only issue with Lingering Souls is that it gets hammered by delver in my experiences. They burn out the tokens + daze, or pierce the spell. 3cc is asking for a lot. If it lands, they aren't terribly strong against the opponent. If I go mom + DRS in the same deck, I have nothing but little guys. I can also see DRS > Mom, but I'm asking what's good to beat delvers and some miracles.
I have thought about going KotR as the only green thing in the deck because a) it's big and b) it synergizes well in Junk/Maverick style shells. Not opposed to going Mirran Crusader or Brimaz or something like that.
*Apologies for tossing up a list...I'm using that as a loose reference rather than "tell me if this is good". Thanks
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
If you want to beat delver and miracles I would suggest abrupt decay and i think engineered explosives is good vs both decks.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Between the infinite removal and souls I already feel favored vs Delver outside of RUG. I just don't think I would even want vial if I didn't have port.

True, sometimes you don't have bbbb. It needs additional attention while cracking fetchlands. But with SDTop and 4 shamans it is more or less ok for me. And the outcome is great. It is much stronger than Sorin against Punishing fires. Against Miracles Sorin is better, but still not a bomb.
I feel, that the Shardless match up is slightly in our favor pre board, and with the right SB it will be ok.
As for hymn, I would say, I like playing more copies to be able to cast it as early as possible. The spare copies can be discarded with Lili or put away with Top. A LOT of games I win with a simple strategy: hymn/seize opponents removal, than mystic into batterskull. Sometimes you just topdeck your discard in the late game and can't do anything about it, but hey, magic is a game of luck.
Back to miracles, it is very difficult to win a long grind against them. The souls are good, but too slow. The revokers are good, but very vulnerable without mother of runes. They can suffer some damage from our creatures, then wipe the board and assemble counter-top, which is a dead lock for this deck as far as we don't play decays. The SB needs some heavy bombs, not just revokers and choke. I am currently thinking about it.
Just to add: I tried aether vials in this deck. But it needs much more creatures with close manacosts to be worth it. Maybe with 4 spirits, 4 mothers, 4 revokers it would be good, but it is something different. Maybe just splash black in DnT? Or just play DnT?
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Continuing some recent conversation:
If you're playing Deathrite Shaman, Dark Confidant, Stoneforge, Lingering Souls, Liliana, and Abrupt Decay then you are very much favored against all Delver decks (BUG is the hardest).
Since I'm not playing Vindicate, I've been having a rough time with Miracles and would love to hear what you guys do about that deck.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Thanks for the feedback everyone. Yea, I'll have to mull over Junk lists and true DGA setups.
Decay (BG) is pretty dirty right now ;) Unfortunately I want that on top of Avenger (WW)
Ehh, worst case I'll push a discard strategy and hope for the best lol. Thoughtseize, Hymn/Inquis, Lili, Bob + friends
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Discard their removal into Bob or stoneforge is generally a fine strategy. That sequence alone can win a game.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Good cards vs miracles:
Sorin, Elspeth, Bitterblosom, Squadron Hawk.

I guess vial is a must when you want to play avengers. Now the only real question is : are <19 guys enough for a vial build to be successful ?
Ports has also a good synergy with vials. But I can see having issues while trying to mix up a good mana base with 8 lands that do produce no white nor black.
With vials, I would not play Lingering souls. My 3-CMC beater would have to be a creature type card.
Your sketch, as it is, seems to have a not so bad MU against delver decks.
If you want to improve your miracle/control MU, you could consider:
- phyrexian revoker
- hokori, dust drinker
- armageddon
It's been a very long time since armageddon was played MD.
Hokori is a plague, even more when protected by mom. But one could argue, why not just play Gaddock instead ? Oh well, there is *a lot* to take into consideration when building such a deck.
In the true beater category you have:
- Hero / Brimaz which comes down to personal preference & good testing. It is hard to say which one is better. But with vial and other 3-CMC target, I would blindly pick-up Brimaz for consistency purpose. Not to mention the psychological impact of vial @ 3 when playing white cards (who said flickerwisp shenanigans ?)
- Kotr -> I love the card but it does not belong to this kind of deck.
- Mirran/Phyrexian crusader. I already mentioned phyrexian in a post few pages ago, but no one seem to be interested. Well, this guy is really underestimated and one should pick up the appropriate one in its meta. Obviously, Mirran is better in a heavy B/G/X environment, otherwise, phyrexian is surely better (unfortunately not with mom). Protection from white & red is a big deal in legacy right now. in a build with x4 mom, I'll go with Mirran.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Winter Orb is another card that could be considered. When I saw GP Paris coverage, I saw Winter Orb and went "What? Is that what I think it is?". Back in the day I played Winter Orb and Relic Barrier. I also like Pithing Needle on top. Revoker is awesome too but Miracles can get rid of it much easier than Needle.
Cataclysm is another one, used mostly by Death and Taxes.
As far as Phyrexian Crusader is concerned. I considered it. It is a 5 turn clock that is immune to the best 2 one mana removal spells. Never tried it.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Use Pithing Needle to murder Top, then grind them out with creatures. If they can't reliably set up Terminus, it's REALLY tough for them.
My list that I've been playing with success is:
4 Deathrite Shaman
4 Dark Confidant
2 Stillmoon Cavalier
4 Stoneforge Mystic
1 Reanimate
1 Unearth
4 Swords to Plowshares
3 Thoughtseize
4 Hymn to Tourach
4 Liliana of the Veil
3 Lingering Souls
1 Council's Judgment
1 Sword of Feast and Famine
2 Sensei's Divining Top
1 Umezawa's Jitte
1 Sword of Fire and Ice
4 Marsh Flats
4 Wasteland
4 Scrubland
3 Verdant Catacombs
3 Swamp
1 Plains
1 Windswept Heath
SB: 3 Zealous Persecution
SB: 2 Rest in Peace
SB: 2 Ethersworn Canonist
SB: 4 Pithing Needle
SB: 2 Disenchant
SB: 2 Path to Exile
Obviously you need to tune your board. I've liked Stillmoon, even though he's a bit weak, since he's immune to Decay and STP. The Reanimate/Unearth is something I'm trying in this deck and another to see if it's a worthwhile inclusion. I've played Unearth before and it's been good, especially if you need to rebuy SFM or something. Reanimating a Tarmogoyf/TNN you've killed/discarded is also good news.
Feast and Famine is in over Batterskull since I have enough Tarmogoyf decks in the meta to warrant its inclusion. Being able to untap all my lands or chump Goyfs until I can answer it has been pretty good.
-Matt
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Agreed on needle. It is the best tool to fight miracles imo. As is Sorin :p
Stillmoon was awesome the few times I actually got to cast him last time, but I think this time around I'm going to play a spirit if the lab in that slot so that I can access it post board against whatever combo deck via e tutor. Plus it randomly hoses elves or something sometimes.
I really don't think miracles is that bad... Souls plus walkers gives us so much recurring threats. You just gotta disrupt them a bit early and not let them assemble counter top when you have nothing on board because vindicate is a fairly reliable answer due to their lack of 3's.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Has anybody tested the interaction between Orzhov Pontiff and Flickerwisp in Vial builds?
Many creatures already fall to the -1/-1 effect. -2/-2 is a one-sided Wrath for a good chunk of the format.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
I won an 8 man on MTGO with my list from my invi cashes. I think it's fine, but I still do not see how people think certain matches fall one way or the other. My one change has been -1 Maindeck Bob, -2 Sideboard Surgical Extraction, +1 Sideboard Zealous, +1 Sideboard Batterskull, +1 Maindeck Garruk Relentless. Seems fine. I just wanted more cards vs miracles and felt currently Surgical is less important than beefing up Elves match more. I won't be able to play this weekend in Atlanta because of school, but am confident if I did I would put up a result. Deck seems well positioned.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Timely Hordemate
3W
Creature -- Human Warrior
Raid -- When ~ ETB, if you attacked with a creature this turn, return target creature card with CMC 2 or less from your GY to the battlefield
3/2
It's in that awkward 4 mana region, but DGA has so many tasty targets that often eat early removal. SFM is the dream, but DRS & Bob are also good value, and having this in my deck would make me more likely to play Tidehollow Sculler as well. With Souls, it's likely you will have at least one creature to attack with on turn 4, and then you get two more.
Chief of the Edge
WB
Creature -- Human Warrior
Other Warrior creatures you control get +1/+0.
There aren't a ton of great Warriors in Legacy, but it might be worth paying attention to the tribe over the rest of this block to see if this could form an offshoot of DGA.

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Etutor seems fairly mediocre here. I don't think you want deed in this deck. If you want some sort of effect like that, engineered explosives is probably what you are looking for.

The main goal of the deck is to have strong library manipulation to circumvent the main weaknesses of playing junk decks. The etutor has been invaluable in that role, but the numbers keep shifting between 3 and 2
I also used to use Engineered Explosives but Deed has been working a lot more reliably as a tutorable reset than explosives.
I will post my results of the tournament at eod for a more detailed description of what the deck does.

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
My thought towards playing a non blue deck is that I'd rather just try to win via raw card advantage rather than selection. That's really just my play style
Kinda panicking for tomorrow. Stuck on whether or not to play a Mirran Crusader or two, and if so, what to cut. Also trying to figure out exactly how to board against death and taxes. I have been bringing in Engineered Plague to have it on board to kill moms, Thalia, and the odd Mangara, but I'm not sure if it is worth it. I guess needle is probably fine to stop mom, port, karakas tricks, and vial. Definitely bringing in disenchant, but the last few times I've played against them, I've eaten a huge dick to Mirran Crusader. It's not worth it to board in Thalia just to block the damn thing is it?
