Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I completely agree with keeping all moons main. I was able to get atleast 3 game wins solely on locking them out of a color before were able to fetch basics.
Also Jaya just didn't seem all that great this weekend for me. I'm testing around with moving her to SB and trying out 1-2 firewalker main board.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I definitely am not advocating cutting Blood Moon. It's stock has just gone down a little bit, with a few more match ups, particularly on the draw, where I board it out i.e. Elves (where it has to be on your turn 1 on the play to really get them). The only thing Moon-wise I cut is the 2nd Magus of the Moon in the SB. I would consider 5-7 (or even 8) Moon effects a personal choice for anyone's build, with no definite correct answer as long as you have a minimum of 5. Probably depends what competition you're building the deck for. My LGS is pretty soft to it, but it's metagame is driven by players with a large collection of legacy staples, who mostly prefer to play powerful multicolored strategies. In a place where lots of people are on budget builds, or don't have that flexibility, it's stock may decrease, or vice versa.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Meanwhile as everyone waffles and juggles card selection johnothan Suarez puts up top 8 after top 8 with his mono red painter list. No one has consistently top 8'd more....
No goblin welders. To be seen. Spellskite main. Jaya main.

Adding 3 Pyroclasm, and a Koth, and cutting 4 Thorns is pretty aggressively stating that he wants to beat U/R Delver, Elves etc., and Miracles, and doesn't care much about the Storm matchup. The 3 Pyroclasm is also in addition to 2 Ratchet Bomb, 1 Martyr, 2 REB, and 2 Bridge that would all be reasonable to board in the U/R match-up. I'd have to imagine Suarez is cutting Blood Moon in order to have space for even some of these options.
Drude, I know you top 16ed in Minneapolis, what is your SB strategy like for that match up, and did you play against it much in that tournament, or since then?
Just trying to get a better sense of the Blood Moon debate in this matchup in the last few comments.

Against UR delver, which I played 3 times I think, I sided out jaya, revoker, magus, Chandra, relic and shaved numbers on welder, SSG, moon or recruiter depending on play or draw. Then I sided in the CoP: red, 3 leylines, blast, 3 pyrokinesis and ratchet bomb. I would play 4 moons on the play and 3 on the draw. That's how I would continue to play this MU.
Going forward I have taken out the relic main for the ratchet bomb and still considering moving the revoker and maybe Chandra to the board. Chandra is so powerful for me when she hits the board and I love her against the two MUs that I feel we are weak to, Miracles and elves. But she might just be a little slow right now. I also like the idea of lowering the curve and dropping bridge ASAP. I'm sure that's how Mr. Suarez goes after these MUs. (Is he not on this thread somewhere?). Also, I really like pyrokinesis right now, and would like it even more under more bridges, as it empties the hand faster and almost always takes out 2-3 targets at a time. I am also thinking about changing CoP: red to Sphere of Law as you then don't have to constantly keep mana up.
On another note, I think I'm giving up on Daretti[emoji25]. If I was going to play with him I think it would require some major retooling of the deck to play a slower game (eg. more bridges and other prison type effects), and again I don't know if that's where we want to be right now. If the format was still all Miracles I would totally be on board. But with the meta being as fast as it is, you just don't have time to mess around with him.

Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I've been playing with 2 copies of Daretti in 2 tournaments now....
I'm VERY impressed.... The repeatable Wild Guess (x2, if needs be) is awesome and the sorcery speed Welder activation has come in handy some times now....
If my OP hadn't conceded the last game tonight, I would have ulti'ed him :D
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
How is everyone doing with IP at the moment? Cant Say I had much success with the tuned shortcake version. The current meta is just full of removals and fast aggressive decks that are quite resilient to Blood Moon as well. It seems that decks that we have problems with, we still have issues, decks which we were good against have become much worse.
I had somewhat more success with more artifact based painter deck with Etched Champion/mother of ruins/cranial plating/tutors. At least thats what my MTGO record is telling me.
I do see some interesting painter brew being made with Auriok Salvagers and jitte even.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I played in the Ricchmond open. Was 5-2-1 going into the final round having just picked up my draw because my opponent wouldn't concede to me on turn 5 despite me having the combo out and him having no answer in hand on turn 5. My losses were to a guy who top 8'd and miracles where I punted game 3. I'm happy with the deck right now. Due to a mistake with recording points I got paired up a lot, agreed to split and just conceded so the guy could be top 16 and putting me in the top 64. Great event. Will write more later.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I just picked this deck up (still need one more Recruiter), but I look forward to learning all the ins and outs of the deck. Seems pretty fun.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
So, I have been trying to fit a viable helm combo into the sideboard.
So far I think the combo is a turn too slow out of the side a lot of the time. I am running 3 e-tutors to facilitate along with 3 lotus petal. Possibly adding another plateau or a plains somewhere might help speed it up.
What are the current opinions of the helm combo?

If you wanna play RiP/Helm combo, why not do it...?
Tinker with your list, in a way, that satisfies you, play with it and share your results with us? ;)

Are you trying to go all in on the combo or just in general have it in the board? I've been playing with it in the board and it's been very useful for me but we might be taking different approaches. It definitely is very slow sometimes though.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I'm just afraid it isn't consistent enough coming in from the side. More testing needs to be done after adding the 3 petal. But as of now, it just seems a bit clunky.
I have a difficult time knowing what peice to try and get when I have both combos in. It just dosent seem fast enough vs sneak and show, which is a match it needs to come in against if you play no main board hate against eldrazi.

I played with 3 RiP & a helm in my board for quite a while, along with 3 etutor, 3 petals, 3 plateau and a plains main. The observations you made above are correct. I almost never got it to fire off. RiPs obviously had splash effect but to actually fit the combo together was nightmarish. Here's the thing, MUs that you are bringing it in against are either faster (S&S) it have enough disruption (miracles) that it's nearly impossible to get all pieces assembled in time. RiPs are also a huge nombo with welder. You are better off bringing in hate bears or single haymakers against them. Certainly try it for yourself, but I eventually let the dream die.

Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I left it out the last couple tournaments as well as jaya and haven't missed either. It just doesn't deserve a slot in my experience
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I am also not too impressed with jaya in this meta. I believe she still merits a SB slot though. She can still shine on a lot of board states in late game.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Sometimes, Jaya is our last hope, against some cards like Chalice. She is amazing against S&S, hypershow, merfolk, pox, blades, miracles.. any match-up that needs time to win, hard control decks.
I'm very glad with my actually list, with 16 creatures and 1 Koth in Main Deck>
2 Simian Spirit Guide
3 Goblin Welder
4 Imperial Recruiter
1 Jaya Ballard, Task Mage
1 Magus of the Moon
1 Phyrexian Revoker
4 Painter's Servant
4 Pyroblast
2 Red Elemental Blast
1 Koth of the Hammer
4 Blood Moon
3 Lotus Petal
2 Ensnaring Bridge
3 Sensei's Divining Top
4 Grindstone
2 Enlightened Tutor
I'll play a superlegacy tournment 7dec, I guess 60 players will play. It will be a nice test.
