Well you are running 4 Simian Spirit Guides. Maybe Cut a few for some Lotus Petal(s)?

I played a strange speed magic tournament on Saturday (30 minute rounds, best 2/3, single elimination), but didn't do so great.
Won the first round against a kukdotha red deck, finished pretty quickly and easily. Second round was against manaless dredge. Lost the first game when I couldn't find a grindstone. Second game I mulled into a six card turn three win that got there. Game three I had a turn one grindstone, turn 2 Revoker on Phantasmagorian, but bricked on land turn three, which meant if I tutored for a painter, he'd Therapy it on his turn. I had no other options so I went for it. He won his turn anyway.
Somehow there was a "buyback" option and I got elected to play in the semi-finals...against infect. Game one I had lame draws and lost. Game two I dealt with all his threats through Pyroclasm, Bolts, and Blasts. Then combo'd. Game three I had turn one grindstone, turn 2 recruiter for Spellskite, and then took 13 poison on his turn three.
Oh well, had fun playing in what seemed like a bizarre setup.
The zombie player in round 3 who beat nuke is good was the only person who took any games from me in the same event. He destroyed me 2-0.
Not sure what to make of this one. Kind of similar to the deck that guy who cheats played a while back. I'm just posting it in case there's anything interesting about it that might port over to more traditional builds. I doubt it, though, I can't believe this mana base and Magus of the Moon are in the same deck.

This deck plays like a miracles deck. Magus makes sense in the mid to late game when you want to win. By then, you would have your basics in play and it screws your opponent when you rec/magus on the same turn and then you can take your time to combo next turn. Preferably with Force / blast in hand. It just a slower more controlling type of game. Not sure if it is actually better then to play miracles really. I play it sometimes just to experience brainstorm and counterbalance!
I had it all against maverick in both games. They were pretty quick. Like I said, 2-0'd everyone except that little kid on zombies. I received a lot of crap for that from a lot of people.
I heard stuff about that but I didn't put much stock into it when I faced the kid. When he started milling his deck from the combo I saw how quick it can get really ugly, though I couldn't remember seeing the cycling zombie. I think I saw a Mortal Combat in there too which I found odd.
Oh I meant he actually both times I did the painter/grindstone combo he actually put two cards in the yard and repeated the process.
Endless Ranks of the Dead? Man that sounds scary, like outta commander or something.
Hey guys Jonathan Salem here I played the grixis deck that got second at the 5k. It does pretty much play like miracles its in essence a Counterbalance-Top deck but I love the changes I made adding magus to the main and a couple others and the reason I think it's better than miracles are the random times you just combo off and also the threat of being able to combo off pretty quickly has people misplay vs me constantly , also it's just super fun and does some degenerate things.
about 50/50 certain match ups are all about the magus lock bug / infect for instance are like auto wins when you resolve a magus if they don't have a heirarch or deathrite , I'll try to write up a tournament report but honestly I dont keep enough notes I played 16 rounds of invitational than this one my brain was magically fried by the end of 27 rounds lol.
jace wins about 20% of games then about 40/40 combo / damage. more than I would have expected when I first saw the list.
Hi Jack,
In future streams, would you be able to have your chat box in bigger fonts? At the moment, its rather hard to read the chat. So a little hard to understand the whole conversation. Not sure if I am wrong, but I do not seem to be able to select quality in your stream. Thanks for the stream today!
its pretty quiet here recently. Anyone has any recent tournament report or new brew?
Pretty much seeing dredge, S&T, UR Delver, Burn more then 50% of the time. Our match up against them is not that great. So cant say I am happy with the way my deck is doing right now. ANT is the other really popular deck now. I would say that even with containment priest, our dredge matchup is perhaps 50/50 or maybe a little better then 50/50 as RIP and priest hoses their deck. Its just that they are very consistent in killing you in 5-6 turns if you do not get any of your hate cards in time which does happen say 50% of the time. S&T is really fast and consistent too with counters as backup. Even with 7 blast MB and another in the SB, I find that I do lose to them more then 50% of the time. I feel that my match up with ANT is better then 50% though if thats any consolation. UR and Elves is pretty much slightly in their favour. As such, I have been doing like 2-2 most of the tournaments I played in. I feel that I have to be quite lucky to get a 3-1 score. Its hard to prepare the SB against so many different types of deck. Its like if you push your SB against some decks, you lose your hate against the other.
What are your SB options currently against the meta now? I was thinking listing out the current SB options might help those playing the deck.
ANT/TES - Thorn, Trinsphere, RIP
Dredge - RIP, Containment Priest,
S&T - Blast, Containment Priest, Helm?
U/R Delver - Sphere of Law, COP:red, Blast, Bolt, RIP?, Trinsphere?, Thorn?
Burn - Pray for spirit of law.....
Miracles - See them much lesser now. Assembly, Koth, Blast, Helm?
D&T - Containment Priest, Bolt,
I FINALLY got the 2nd containment priest on MODO!
Ringo had a great idea: one night next week we are going to try and get together and steam the daily (I will probably play and screen share via Skype). I will try to make a post here before it happens though.
Jack, if you want to test priest, let me know. I can lend you them.
I've been running into lots of U/R, Burn, 12 post (?!) and Sneak/Omni as well, though I haven't been having as much trouble as before. Perhaps I'm getting lucky. I've had a positive record against the field overall, and would say I'm more than 50% to 3-1 or 4-0 the dailies for the last couple weeks, especially when I'm not being a moron and/or playing with a few drinks.
Here's the list I've been using on MODO, which is slightly different than the one I would play in person at my LGS.
3 Red Elemental Blast
4 Blood Moon
4 Pyroblast
4 Lotus Petal
3 Sensei's Divining Top
3 Ensnaring Bridge
4 Grindstone
1 Phyrexian Revoker
1 Simian Spirit Guide
1 Magus of the Moon
3 Imperial Recruiter
4 Painter's Servant
2 Goblin Welder
2 Plateau
4 Mountain
2 Scalding Tarn
2 Arid Mesa
3 City of Traitors
4 Ancient Tomb
2 Enlightened Tutor
2 Bloodstained Mire
1 Engineered Explosives
1 Koth of the Hammer
SB:
2 Containment Priest
1 Duergar Hedge-Mage
3 Sudden Shock
1 Tormod's Crypt
3 Kor Firewalker
2 Ethersworn Canonist
1 Rest in Peace
1 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
1 Phyrexian Revoker
Thalia in particular has been incredible against just straight up Burn, as well as the other obvious matchups in which you'd bring Thorn or similar in. This could still be Thorn, though I like that she beats down, and blocks, and often she creates a mana jam in removing her that's sufficient to get painter online with blast back up. It is certainly possible Thorn is better, but every time my deck feels like combo Death and Taxes after board, it makes me want to play more hatebears instead of their non-creature corollaries. As of this moment, I have yet to be Massacred, though Pyroclasm has happened.
Canonist has also been incredible, and I've been boarding it in against Sneak and Show decks to make sure that when they cast a spell that matters, my REBs are the final word on it. Containment Priest is the best card in this sideboard, without a doubt. Kor Firewalker can sometimes be hard to cast, (I cut the 3rd Plateau, still doing 6 fetches/4 petal) still waffling back and forth on whether it's good or not, but I've tested other numbers, and you definitely need 3-4 or none at all. The thing is, without it, I haven't really been able to win against U/R or Burn with any consistency anyway, and if it comes down, it completely steals these games. I don't run them at my LGS, as no one really plays Burn, and there isn't much U/R Delver.
A word on Revoker as well - I know a few of you moved off of it, and probably for good reason before GPNJ. I didn't like it then either, and wrote a long post about it, but after a while of it being cut, I realized how narrow my Recruiting/Tutor options were. MODO seems to have diversified since the GP, and having a flexible card like Revoker has been great. I definitely think 1 somewhere in the 75 is warranted, and I run 1 MD 1 SB, as I find that when they're good, they're reaaaally good. A total dud against U/R though.
Also, I could see moving the 3rd Ensnaring Bridge to the board, as it is a holdover from my old mono-red list, since I've started running Enlightened Tutors, and my list in general is getting closer to Kapn's - though once again, this is one of those cards that when you want it, you really want it badly.
And yeah! Hopefully Gnarles and I will be able to do a stream right after the New Year, think it'd probably be a lot of fun if any of you are interested in tuning in for that.
I haven't been having good results in the post cruise meta. Not that results matter at a LGS level, but painter has lost a bit of stock in this time. Slamming a blood moon just isn't the same anymore, are other painters getting as despondent as I am? 😢
