Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
My apologies, I'm always debating whether to switch to this deck over junk. Nice report, some great plays in there.

Anywho, here's my tournament report. 46th at Worcester. 10-5 record. 500+ people. Placed in the money but I was kinda hoping for a better result. Well, I at least keep to my record of always cashing at SCG events...
Maindeck Decklist is exactly the same as SCG Syracuse. Sideboard a bit different. 2 Surgicals instead of one. Cut the singleton Leyline for a RIP. Added a second Gaddock Teeg.
Round 1. UR Delver. Matt. Lost 2-0
My hands are mediocre, his were not. I'm burned out and the aggressiveness of Swiftspear and Young Pyro are too much. And didn't see my board wipes or even much of my removal for that matter.
Round 2. Aggro Loam. Oscar Chapelle. Win 2-1.
I think he may be a Sourcer. Someone on Aggro Loam thread said he was there and lost to a DeadGuy deck. Game 1, Hero of Bladehold takes care of things for an exact kill, even with a Knight of the Reliquary (summoning sick) and a Maze of Ith out. Game 2. He has an active Knight on an empty board with me having non-basics out. Lol, you do the math on my chances on that one. Can't remember much from game 3 but I think I had turn 1 Bob out. I was lucky to not see Punishing Fire much. I hate that card.
Round 3. Grixis Control Pyro. Matthew Smith. Won 2-0
I'm able to win the attrition war game 1. Game 2, I toxic deluge for 5, killing Gurmag Angler, Young Pyro and friends. Hero of Bladehold then comes in a bit later to clean things up.
Round 4. Death and Taxes. Alex Simmonds. Win 2-1
Game 1, my hand is a bit meh mulling to 5 doesn't help obviously and he has early Mom, stoneforge and Thalia. I scoop pretty early.
Games 2 and 3, I have an early Bob in both games and I'm able to get enough removal to kill everything.
Round 5. Miracles. Mason Sokol. Win 2-0
He's a bit mana light even with a Top trying to dig. Vindicate and Wasteland makes things worse for him.
Game 2. He has Monastery Mentor and Top out. Luckily I have a Revoker naming Top but he still cantrips a bunch. At one point he attacks with 3 tokens and the mentor (no spells cast) into me. I feel I have no choice but to block the Mentor, which I felt he shouldn't have attacked with. I'm able to stabilize killing the tokens and get an active Liliana out. When she's at ulitmate, I have a Teeg out and 2 tokens. He has 4 Islands, 1 Plains, 1 Counterbalance and a Top. I put Plains, top and Counterbalance in one pile and the Islands in the other. He scoops.
Round 6. Stoneblade UW I think? Don McFarlane. Lost 2-1
I punted Game 2. He has a True Name as a blocker and for some odd reason I don't swing with Hero of Bladehold. Why, I don't know. I'm on tilt so Game 3 doesn't go so well either.
Round 7. Lands. Jacob Haversat. Won 2-0.
Game 1, he's able to Manabond. But no Loam, No Punishing Fire and only 1 of either Dark Depths or Stage. I'm able to cast Hero of Bladehold and Maze of Ith only slows down the onslaught.
Game 2. He makes a Marit Lage token. I swords it. He makes another soon after. But I chump with Lingering Souls token. And then Liliana Sacrifice it on my turn.
Round 8. Reanimator. Oliver Higgins. Win 2-1.
Game 1. He has to mull to 5. I thoughtseize his hand and realize 2 things....the first is that he's Reanimator. The second is my Hymn to Tourach in my hand is going to stay there. I'm able to discard enough cards to stop him from doing anything and Batterskull does the rest.
Game 2. Griselbrand shows up from Exhume. Game ova.
Game 3. He casts Stronghold Gambit. it resolves, Shriekmaw from my hand stops Griselbrand from coming into play and stops my Stoneforge Mystic from living. Shriekmaw and Batterskull token finish him off.
Round 9. UR Delver. Zen. Win 2-1.
Game 1. Taylor Swiftspear and Delver do a dance number on my hand.
Game 2. Hero of Bladehold returns the favor.
Game 3. I'm able to kill his threats. He Digs through time....and shows me 2 of the cards....Price of Progress. Lol, usually an awesome card but he has 4 non-basics out and I have only 1. And I'm at 24 life, he's at 2.
Round 10. MUD. Syed Ahmed. Win 2-1.
Game 1. I mull to 5 on the draw. Turn 1, Chalice on 1. Turn 2. Metal Worker. Turn 3, Puke hand out. There is no Turn 4.
Game 2. Removal.deck gets there.
Game 3. My hand isn't great. Bob, Mystic, fetch, Wasteland, Souls. Although for a 5 card hand, could be much much worse. He goes Cloudpost and then next turn cloudpost into Grim Monolith. Holy mana, Batman. He has Chalice at 1. Trinisphere. Lodestone Golem. Revoker on Jitte. Revoker on Liliana. Oh and did I forget to mention Wurmcoil Engine? lol. So Stoneforge Mystic gets me a Batterskull. A later draw a SOFI. Lingering Souls does a bunch of Chump blocking (I also draw another Lingering Souls later). My Batterskull token trades for a Golem only to see another. Things look grim. Eventually I Council's Judgment away the Wurmcoil Engine, Equip SOFI to a Souls token to kill the Revoker naming Liliana and I'm able to Stabilize. I was as low as 9 life and him at 49. Luckily he draws bricks for a few turns (seemed like an eternity to me) and I draw Hero of Bladehold. I equip skull to her and 49 life goes away pretty fast.
Round 11. UR Delver. Stephen Rice. Lose 2-0
Too fast for me to handle. I think his list had Goblin Guides in it.
Round 12. Canadian Threshold. Andrew Boswell. Win 2-1
Stoneforge Mystic MVP in this match winning games 1 and 3. Lol, in one game I have Liliana on an empty board with us both very light in cards in hand. But I don't activate for a couple of turns. He comments to me "Must be a really nice card in your hand." The card? Shriekmaw. lol, if he only knew. I didn't uptick Liliana since a Single bolt can put her down so that if he topdecks a dude I'm in trouble if I don't topdeck well.
Round 13. Jeskai Blade. Kevin Jones. Lose 2-0
Nahiri shows up returning a Batterskull to play. Nice. Good to see obscure cards do well. He has too much 1 mana removal plus Snapcaster. Hero tries to save me but gets Plowed.
After game 1, he comments to me that a few of his friends lost to a Deadguy player with Hero of Bladehold and Shriekmaw. Kevin assumes that player is me. Pretty safe assumption.
Round 14. RW Painter. Ian Carle. Win 2-0
I thoughtseize and see 5 lands including a City of Traitors, Blood moon and a blast. I take the moon. Batterskull does the rest.
Game 2. Too much removal for him to handle. I vindicate his Ensnaring Bridge and swing with the team.
Round 15. Grixis Pyro. Nicholas Spagnolo. Lose 2-0
I thoughtseize him and see Probe, Therapy, Snapcaster, Ponder, Strix and 2 lands. I take the probe. He blindnames Dark Confidant. I have 2 in hand. I'm still able to pressure with Lingering Souls but he's able to kill me before I get him with Bolt. Game 2, he has too much pressure with Pyromancer for me to handle. Also I'm mana screwed a bit.
I was the only Deadguy player to make day 2. No idea but quite possible I'm the only Deadguy player in the room.
-Hero of Bladehold kill count: 5. Most ever for me. Should have been 6 if not for my brain shutting off.
-My opponents were all cool. Some I think are posters on the Source.
-Sideboard MVP. Engineered Explosives. I like removal. My one of Rest in Peace showed up quite a bit in games I boarded it in.
-Faced no Omnitell decks at all. I've tested a bit against it, and I hate playing against it. So I didn't bother to side in specific hate cards for it.
-Also faced no Elves decks and only 1 Miracles player.
-Missed having Disfigure in the board. Could have used it against Delver decks.
Not easy games against URX delver decks. I remember the horrible loses to 8-12bolts decks, when I just started playing MTG at 2011...

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Help! What kind of deck is deadguy? Midrange, aggro, tempo?
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Midrange. It can feel Tempo like with the right draws but it's a Midrange deck for the most part.
My build with Moxes can feel like a Tempo deck but lately I haven't been seeing them in the opening 7 or at all.

Narrowly speaking, Tempo decks play daze.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Yeah I'd agree with Wilkin. Mostly mid range, you are one for one until your card advantage engines pull you ahead, but sometimes you open on deathrite into stoneforge plus wasteland and just get so far ahead your opponent can't ever catch up
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
I find RG lands is an extremely hard matchup for my deck. Hand disruption and mana disruption are both useless against it. Any suggestion?
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Very quickly, I know this deck is not Junk, it's BW, but if you are splashing green for DRS and AD then woudn't it be wise to test more mana-light options (nothing too high CC, or double-GGreen) and test/play something like Sylvan Library?

Sensei's Top is more favored by DGA players. 2CC are already crowded in this deck(luckily that Spell Snare is no longer played in legacy).

Run RIP if you want to nuke Lands. Extirpate is also good.

It was nice to mee you in Prague on thursday legacy tournament (before Prague Eternal) doing well with Rock (4:0) and crushing miracles in last round.
I was playing this list with result 3:1
4x stfm
4x confidant
4x deathrite
3x sculler
1x batterskull
1x jitte
1x sofi
3x decay
1x sylvan lib
4x swords
3x souls
3x liliana
4x seize
2x inquisition
4x scrubland
1x bayou
1x savannah
4x waste
8x fetch
2x swamp
1x plains
1x karakas
SB:
1x canonist
1x zealous persecution
1x explosives
2x choke
1x teeg
1x revoker
2x needle
2x oblivion ring
4x leyline of the void
R1 miracles, 1:2 it should be unintentional draw, or me winning in next turns, but I gave it up to my friend, because draw is same like loose in our LGS.
R2 miracles, 2:0
R3 omnitell, 2:0 (friend scooped it to me, because of his 2 previous looses)
R4 zoo, 2:0 - my opponent was land light and I played 5x wastelands in two games..
How was your legacy main event? Sadly, I was not able to compete there...

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Playing grixis control the other night, I got nuked into oblivion by this deck, and I had a smile on my face the whole time. That's what I deserve.
Same player from my LGS who made day 2 of GPNJ with DGA even in the Cruise era.
He had Bob + Tas and Vindicated my lands, completely fearless.
I still don't feel like the Omni/Miracles matchups are good, but boy does this deck kill the Grixis decks.

Grixis control did not perform very well against "fair" decks. And DGA is almost the "fair-est" deck in legacy...
However, Grixis delver is a much more tougher matchup for DGA players.

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Hi! I need some help to my sideborad. Right now it looks like this:
Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
2 ethersworn canonist
1 Mealstorm Pulse
3 Hymn
1 Pithing Needle
1 Nihil Spellbomb
2 Tormod's Crypt
3 Leyline of Sanctity
1 Zealous Perseution
I donīt think i want have leyline because it was agaisnt burn and combo but to little combo decks win by target. Hymn is good both decks so I donīt know what I want instad. Thalia shall be a third Canonist becasue Canonist is better agasint combo. Any tips?
P.S
Was on MTGPulse tosee deadguyale lists. Found myself in a top 8 that I played two weeks ago ;)

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
you could replace a thoughtseize with a therapy main, replace a hymn with the thoughtseize side. therapy is nice with souls and stoneforge. doing this puts you at 5 1cc discard in the 75 which is important on the draw against storm, otherwise you only have the pithing needle for T1 disruptive plays. with 3 sculler / 3 thoughtseize / 1 therapy, lots of times you can ensure a hit with the first therapy cast.
you have a persecution main?
i like the 2-of liliana.
have you considered chains of mephistopheles / spirit of the labyrinth? good against blue and combo.

I don't like therapy in decks that's don't get value to sac a creture (dreage, nic-fit). I can't see the hand other then discard spell so many time I have to guess. If I am wrong I can sac a creture but then I have lost a creture. I just like thoughtsize better. I have replace leyline with o-ring, aven-mindcensor and korfire walker. But I want riki-mankai (equip that destroy other equips) when my oppoment use it to me. So nice in a stoneforge mirror

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
I read the BR thread where they mention Deadguy has the same win percentage as Miracles (as of this year at SCG events). Hey Maharis, thanks for the shout out. lol.
I think the number crunching and all very interesting but I'm not sure if the numbers are correct. It said Deadguy was 18-16-2.
I wonder if they only counted SCG Opens or also included SCG 5K events. In any case I was 7-2-1 at SCG 5K Syracuse and 10-5 at SCG Open Worcester. 17-7-1. I also noticed that Deadguy did well at another 5K event, 2 guys finished in top 8. Hmmm....maybe they didn't count 5k events.
So if anything, the Deadguy win % should probably be a bit better. But I still wouldn't say Deadguy is a Tier 1 deck or one that anyone can pick up and do well with it. The numbers can be attributed to the fact very few people play the deck, and the ones that do probably specialize in that deck.
I've been experiencing better results against Miracles of late. Much better actually. I take out the moxes since the speed usually doesn't help vs them. Plus, I need to take out something as I side in about 10 cards. Probably going to take out the Containment Priest. I haven't sided it in against anyone in quite a while. My meta is filled with Delver, Miracles and Lands.

The deck list?
Miracles is okey matchup for us, we don't need to overcominst the borad to win. The creture we have out is mostly value, (Stoneforge, Dark con and lingering souls)

Maindeck is the same old, same old. The list is on Starcitygames from Syracuse April of this year or TC Decks. The sideboard is always being tweaked. Only real change is 1 Thalia in, 1 Containment Priest out. I found that I rarely sided Priest in lately.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Yeah I never found myself really needing much for miracles sans maybelike somesort of needle effect just to hit top or maybe EEto protect from angels or counter balance

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Hey I have posted in this thread before.
I am currently playing the following list:
http://i.imgur.com/EExjE4v.jpg
In my experience Deathrite Shaman is just way better than Æther Vial in general and I've been beating most things consistently with the deck. I really am not sure on some of the numbers and the sideboard was an enlightened tutor board where I then cut enlightened tutor for more canonists.
I really like this deck and am considering getting the alpha duals for it in paper so I can play it, since I have most of the rest already. What do you guys think are weak match ups? I can't really tell

Lands is one. Decks with pfire in general are bad mu.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Miracles is another one. 3 chokes in SB is not even close to being enough for beating them.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Like I've said before, unless dig changed things, I was usually slightly favored against miracles. Maybe I just played the match up differently, but lingering souls does work against them. Try more needle effects and EE for angels/counterbalance.
Also liliana was a house. Do you guys find her underwhelming? I never played less than 3
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
I mean, I'm not a fan of Batterskull in a deck with no Brainstorm, that's my main complaint.
If you're looking to beat Miracles consistently, Marc, you could run Teeg since you have Mothers to protect him, or just run Needle. Good card is good.

Well I don't really have a problem beating miracles, at least not so far.
I'm not looking to fix my deck (addressing all comments directed at me here) I'm just looking to figure out exactly the numbers of each card (that I'm already playing). I am very happy with the deck so far.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
List overall looks pretty solid. You play a few things I didn't like in general, but I also haven't played the deck in awhile so I say you do what works for you.
@Matt, Batterskull is probably a necessary evil here just because all of your threats alone are so bad. I think Canonist is very good here and I could see this deck having a very good Omni MU post board. How have you fared against the fair non blue decks Bahra? I mean I know you're probably better than most of your opponents and therefore can simply outplay them, but have you felt in your testing that you are winning due to outplaying them or due to the deck actually being powerful enough?

Well I'm playing on magic online and have only run into 2 nonblue decks so far and that was a weird stax deck that I lost to, but that should be a very favourable match up due to lingering souls, deathrite shaman and bob, I had active bob for 4 turns but didn't see a land and thus lost. And I didn't see any of my good cards in the other game I lost as well. So I will chalk that one up to variance.
the other non-blue deck I faced was 4c Loam and that seems like a bad match up but I mana screwed him in game 1, he did the same to me in game 2, and then in game 3 I had deathrite into RiP (lol) and he dealt with both but eventually I got him with mom and lingering souls (lol again).
Now that I think about it, there's a lot of cards in the deck that are not super synergistic, but simply discarding the opponents hand in the first few turns or playing a dark confidant is so powerful in itself that this deck can win on the back of it.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
Batterskull is very necessary in this deck. It would be a very bad idea to not run Skull in this deck.
As far as your list Bahra, seems fine. I'd say maybe cut a hymn for a one mana discard, to help out the curve a bit.
For bad matchups, I know what mine are but it may be different for you since our lists are different.
-burn. Playing Thoughtseize and Bob kinda sucks here. I guess seize is still necessary to take that critical Sufuric Vortex or Smash to Smithereens but it still sucks.
-Belcher. If they win the die roll, it's pretty hard to win here. I don't lump in Oops All Spells as I can affect graveyards even on their turn 1 (oh the singleton Leyline).
-Of late Grixis Pyromancer has been giving me some problems. Well, mostly the Pyromancer himself. But your build Bahra should handle that much better than Mine.
-Omnitell. Bad for me. But I don't run Canonist. I feel you need to run at least 3 to make it worth it and since Omnitell is on the decline, I felt like it wasn't worth the slots in my meta.
-UR Delver. Essentially burn with blue cards, lol. The Goblin Guide version can be hard to handle with so many (12 maybe more if they run Lavamancer) one mana dudes.
But other than that, I feel confidant. And even if I face those decks, they aren't auto lose matches. I beat Burn and Grixis at the 5K SCG Syracuse.
-
Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
I know Megadeus has been talking about trying 4 Mom + 4 DRS decks for a while. I like this build. Mom is crucial for protecting our real threats, which are SFM/Bob/Sculler, against Bolt decks -- but neither Miracles nor Omnitell play Bolt, and since they're so popular, you don't just autolose games where you play DRS into Sculler and see two removal spells.

Mom is crucial for protecting our real threats, which are SFM/Bob/Sculler, against Bolt decks -- but neither Miracles nor Omnitell play Bolt, and since they're so popular, you don't just autolose games where you play DRS into Sculler and see two removal spells.
Mother is tried and true in DnT - I'm fairly certain the deck isn't nearly as good without Mom, so it might be fair to give it a spin in this deck, especially now. I like most of the choices in the board, but I might just say that instead of Choke, why not run Grip? Grip is a real beating against Miracles and Omni. Needle is also an option.

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
What's the plan here against Omni? I've been thinking about taking this to a tourney next weekend, but every time I test Omni I feel like a massive underdog. If I can't resolve 2-3 discard spells in the first 2-3 turns he blows me out of the freaking water. I don't mind essentially punting game 1, but post board I still don't have a strong game, and given that I probably lost g1, that's a big problem as I need to take 2 in a row.
For sake of reference, here's what I've been working with:
3 Scrubland
3 Bayou
2 Swamp
1 Plains
1 Badlands
10 Black Fetch.
4 Deathrite Shaman
4 Dark Confidant
4 Tidehollow Sculler
2 Stoneforge Mystic
1 Ethersworn Cannonist
3 Phyrexian Obliterator
4 Dark Ritual
4 Abrupt Decay
4 Thoughtseize
3 Hymn to Tourach
3 Liliana of the Veil
1 Batterskull
1 Umezawa's Jitte
1 Sword of Fire and Ice
1 Sylvan Library
SB
2 Ethersworn Cannonist
2 Rest in Peace
1 Enlightened Tutor
1 Zealous Persecution
2 Swords to Plowshares
1 Surgical Extraction
1 Pithing Needle
1 Pernicious Deed
1 Thalia, Guardian of Thrabden
1 Choke
2 Slaughter Games
I realize that the Ritual-Obliterator plan is non-standard, but I'm quite fond of it. Other than STP, there's not many circumstances where I'd rather have drawn Lingering Souls or Hero of Bladehold, and I'm comfortable enough with how I match against Miracles and Stoneblade to give them that concession. The red and slaughter games should probably be changed, but I haven't yet found a better plan to tilt Omni into my favor.

Re: [Deck] Deadguy Ale (B/w Confidant)
leyline of the void has an advantage over rip in that you don't need to dedicate your second turn play, free to cast sculler, hymn, or lili. On the other hand, rip shuts off their dtt more reliably. you could test them (in your build) by going to a 1/1 split.
spirit of the labyrinth / chains of mephistopheles mangles omni up pretty badly, in my limited experience.
when playing against omni, definitely i try to set up with drs so i can take a more substantial turn two if i'm on the play.

What I miss in this list is a good beater. Sure, you can win hiting with batterskull or 1/1 token with a jitte. But it's slow and don't close games fast. I have for exempel mirran crusader that beats gofy and really good with jitte. Like one pf Hero of Bladehold won't be wrong in this list.

Hey again I modified the sideboard of the list a little, now it's not the sorry remains of an enlightened tutor sideboard, but rather just a streamlined super solid sideboard (in my opinion).
Here's the list:

I did a 24 hour stream today, and I got to play 3 legacy dailies among other things. I played them all with this list and my results were 3-1, 3-1 and 4-0.
My losses were burn and a Junk deathblade deck. I beat miracles 5-6 times at least, storm a couple of times and various delver decks.
I am very happy with this configuration, and I encourage anyone looking for a consistent way to win with this deck, to try out this version or a version similar to it. I really dislike all the fancy chrome mox + 4 drops etc.
And we really don't need big beaters when we have equipment and lingering souls. Enough disruption means that even a random 2/2 is enough.
