Curious to see your Grixis painter list, is it the same as the jared boettcher list from a while back? Is there another forum for the Grixis and UR versions of painter? I seem to have a real hard time playing a deck that doesn't include FoW. I feel naked without it. lol.

There is not a forum for the deck but I'd be happy to talk about it. I'm still learning it. I'm planning to play it at my local legacy tonight rather than R/W. It's got a lot going on. It doesn't have the same kind of pure power as mono r, strawberry, or u/r but I think it's also got game against a wider range than the others. It kind of just gets really sick (imo) incremental value until it can win. In testing I wasn't doing so great against ur delver or elves but it could beat both and then I tried against scapewish and miracles where I felt better. Just trying different things out for a bit. Time for a break, also, depending on how bannings go I may want to play something different for the invitational in march....but probs not as my deck is starting to look sweet.

I actually saw this list a while ago and put it together online. I also noticed that it seemed to lose to fast delver MUs and I NEVER won with the painter combo so I moved that to the SB and put in thopter/sword combo with a couple copies of stoneforge mystic and a jitte. Played much better. But yes, this is off topic for iPainter.
Speaking of IPainter, how do others approach the MUD matchup? That deck seems to have picked up in popularity lately and I have a hard time with it. With the blue splash I was trying Llawan but I don't think the blue is worth it.

Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
counterthopters did use to be a thing.
as for MUD Blood Moon can be surprisingly effective to slow them down. Their stuff is expensive. Goblin welder is amazing. Usually though I've been able to either combo off faster, get b. moon/bridge out and just slow them down to much, or get a welder in play and just do whateer I need to
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Mud is a combo deck like us sometimes they combo faster and there's not much we can do about it. Against Mud/U our blast spells can help more. Blood moon is great depending on if our hand has more value then theirs. Revoker and needle are nice if you want, staff of domination/kuldotha forge master/karn. It's can be difficult game one blightsleel stops instawin but your chances can still be high to win. Against MUD STP is a great card if you use it.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Plan A for me:
- Jaya Ballard, Task Mage + Painter's Servant...
Plan B if the meta calls for it....
- Multiple Manic Vandal plus the above :D
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
WE DID IT BOYS!
Cruise banned!
Begin happy dances!
(Hopes for jack to have celebratory stream this week)
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
We in boys.
Or at least better than we were a day ago. Hopefully with cruise gone the levels of lightning bolt and reb/beb go down. Most importantly, hopefully gitaxian probe drops off some. I think that card was the biggest reason things got harder. We thrive on imperfect information since we have so many different angles of attack.
Anyways I guess the next thing to watch (assuming yung p drops off some) is the larger white yung p. If it replaces pyromancer, we can still utilize blood moon with the extra turn. Lots to pay attention to. I don't think the deck changes all that much though. Discard will bounce back some, which makes welder better, and etutor in response will still be very strong. The maindeck canonist I've been playing has worked great vs the unfair decks while acting as a pseudo-spellskite vs removal/counters. If it sticks vs fair decks you basically win by comboing in response if they ever cast a spell. Or just activating vs any deck and having a blast ready is game over. It's been a pleasant surprise although if liliana and drite come back in large numbers revoker could take its spot.
I'll be testing and have an updated list in the next week or two if anyone cares. As most of you know, there isn't a whole lot of variation in my configuration as I think being comfortable is better than large-scale changes, but the few flex slots will all be scrutinized. Biggest considerations right now are the 3/2 ssg-petal split, the 3/2 etutor-top split, whether there need to be two bridges main again and whether 7 blasts main will be needed still. If shardless/ta comes back big then I'll probably move the 7th out. Canonist-revoker main will be another point and I think that covers the flex spots. EE main I have really liked and am almost okay with leaving it as set in stone now.
Sideboard Assemble can probably sneak back in especially if we don't need the 8th blast and/or can cut down on pyroclasms. Lots to figure out, but could be for naught if cruise decks just swap for dig and still outperform. Just giving an update for all the Shortcakers of the world. I look forward to everyone else's thoughts on this as well.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Gonna stream tonight jack?
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Really great news for sure!
After testing some more fringe matches this week a bit, I agree Jaya needs to stay main. Hedge mage works great, but is too clunky against wastelands.
If I see more deathrites I would not feel that great about playing daretti main either. I've never really liked it a bunch already, so I guess I'm biased. It just seems not great to be unable to tutor for it. They also will have a 1 drop answer to our best way to utilize it.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I can echo the sentiment on Jaya. I just about cut her a week or so ago, but then had a testing session this past weekend where I was able to get a Blood Moon and Bridge down, then Jaya took over the game. Took out some key cards from my opponent, kept him off his basics, and finally burned him out.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Without cruise decks to worry about, Jaya is definitely main deck material again. I have missed that card a bit
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
No more janky SB slot of firewalker or warmth. Hurray! All praise less bolts!
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
So, I've been playing some online over the last couple days and have seen a lot of people just basically swap out treasure cruise for dig through time. Granted, it's not quite as good but it's still out there. I wouldn't put away my sphere of law just yet. Still glad to see treasure cruise go though.
So, I also wanted to mention that Ethersworn canonist is awesome. A. there is a lot of show and tell back now. B. sequencing the canonist with the combo for protection has been awesome. Against U/R delver in my last game, I dropped canonist and painter out on one turn. Opponent had pithing needle on grindstone (which I already had in play). He ponders on his turn so I know that I can blast the needle without worry eot. Then he can't play another spell or I just go off in response. It's quite fantastic. I did even cut my spellskite to get Jaya back in the main. I'm still trying a little splash of blue for a while just for Keranos (against Miracles) and Llawan in the SB.
Been having a lot of success online in general. Viva la Painter!

Can you stream some of these games? Especially with the blue splash, I'd love to see it in action.
anyone playing some legacy at scgdc?

I've also been running this deck online lately, with fairly decent success. I've been running thoughtseize in the sideboard though, not cabal therapy. Are you finding therapy to be more effective? I'm on thoughtseize because we only play few creatures, and several of them I don't want to be sacrificing. Curious on your thoughts on this...
Thanks.
(Sorry if I am hijacking the thread to discuss grixis painter -- I don't mean to)
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
from my observation of the list and how people play the cabal might be his choice over TS due to the loss of life being crucial. And late game all you need is to name that one card that stops your plan and cabal can do that. if he had a few pyromancers MD id definitely go 3 cabal over TS but i do see your point, could be playstyle over any correct decision.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I don't own any thoughtseizes. I had therapies
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
1-0 so far at the legacy 5k
Played against some white blue enchantment deck.
Game 1 : mull to 6, turn 1 moon, he conceded turn two before I saw anything more than a triland
So I sb'd out the moons and put in trin, thorn, revoked and crypt as a catch all
Game 2: he chose to draw and leylined on my turn, then he played an enchantment that protected him from my grindstone after I played it on turn two (t1 top). He then proceeded to play enchantments that wouldn't let me attack or use graveyards (his wincon was helm rip). I got out the combo pieces, got jaya out, blasted his enchantment hate and grinded him out around turn 5 or 6. I know I started with a 1 land hand wih the combo and recruiter as well as top and a pyro last. Kept.
Round 2:2-0 against UWR delver
T1 Fow my blood moon
T2 Fow my magus and pierced my blast
T3 canonist doing work, welder taking bolts
I get a bridge out when he plays TNN
T4 painter gets bolted
T5 recruited another painter, canonist still doing work.
At some point I have painter in play and painter in graveyard with welder ready, pass to him he realized he could only play one spell and I'd just activate in response and conceded.
Game 2:
Turn 1 top
T2 welder and canonist
T3 grindstone
T4 thorn
I can't recall much of what happened later, I've been really nervous since this is my first tournament playing painter.
Kept stalling for several turns, until he conceded to the combo (had a blast on top of my deck to top for just incase)
Ethersworn is a beast!
Round 3: storm 2-1 http://sales.starcitygames.com//deck...p?DeckID=79222
G1 he goes first and combos off turn 2, I had nothing to stop him.
G2 kept hand with trinisphere, canonist, thorn, welder, city and petal. Put canonist out turn one, he took trinisphere with cabal therapy after he whiffed guessing Thalia. I put out thorn and then revolver next turn. Proceeded to beat down him to 8 for several turn. He adnausemed Down to 4, during my lethal attack he tried to bounce a creature and I had an REb to answer.
G3: again kept a very hate filled hand with revoked, thorn, welder in hand. Played revoked turn one with my first of two city's, he took thorn and welder, I drew a land and then I drew canonist and played it. Proceeded to beat down. Next turn I put both combo pieces on board (started with them in hand). He conceded. Oh yeah I remember turn two I tutored for the artifact land cuz I had no other lands, I kept a hate filled hand.
Round 4: 1-2 metalworker http://sales.starcitygames.com//deck...p?DeckID=79192
G1: t2 moon t3 bridge, stalled until he conceded when combo pieces were in play.
Games 2 and 3 I got mana screwed, could have won game two if I have manic vandal instead of hedgemage cuz I only had the artifact land and an ancient tomb the whole game. He combo'd off and won. Game 3 just had one land that got destroyed and he had chalice on 1 and 2. Gg
3-1 so far
Match 5 2-0 against cloudpost with multiple eldrazi and ugin!
T1 moon kinda sealed it off, turn 4 jaya kept her off basics. Kept the beat downs with painter and recruiter until got her to 8 life then I drew grindstone and was like sure I'll go for the combo win. Turns out she had eldrazi and so we went through the motions, which let me see her deck that had 4 eldrazi and ugin! Plus like 2-3 needles. Anyways once that resolved just continued to beat down for the win. Jaya doing work.
Game 2:
She played t1 expedition map. I kept a 2 city hand with furnace painter and welder revoler and petal can't recall the rest. I turn oned the revoker on map. Turn 3 moon. She got out sylvan library and kept the hand advantage. Eventually I got out 2 welder a and kept beating down till she took out the first moon. I got a second one out and protected my dudes with blasts or REB. Beat downs for the win. Could I counter grip?
4-1
Round 6
Lost both games to BG chalice deck. Never drew enough lands. Had to mull to 6 both times, almost had an early combo off game 1 but he decayed in response
I have no idea what deck this was. He has land destruction spells , chalices, deathrites, and wastelands and 4 sylvan libraries
found his decklist : http://sales.starcitygames.com//deck...p?DeckID=79214
Round 7
Lost to dredge. http://sales.starcitygames.com//deck...p?DeckID=79219
G1 he combo'd off on turn 5 after a mull to 3. I didn't get anything out fast enough to stop him.
Game 2: containment priest painter bridge came out to stall the game until I could find a grindstone. Once out he went for a firestorm but realiZed he only paid enough to do 2 damage to each (thinking priest and painter were the same toughness) so she won me the game there. (Just comboed next turn) I also stalled long enough to get a rip
Game 3 my two hate pieces got cabal therapied away from my opening hand. He went on to win and I only had 2 lands.
4-3
Round 8: elves.
G1: turn 2 moon leaves him with 2 forests bouncing each with ranger and doing nothing to get more mana for a NO. Combo for the win around turn 6.
G2: he therapied my containment priest and my painter from hand (had a blast in hand as well, first painter then priest) . I revoke symbiote instead of ranger which was a mistake, he proceeds to combo off using the ranger to bounce his forests for mana.
G3: I play turn one top. He plays shaman.
Turn two I slam down painter and grindstone. He's got a forest in play, fetch in graveyard, I didn't want to get therapy'd next turn so I played them both from my hand on turn two.
His turn 2, He taps shaman removing the fetch.... For green! Woot not an abrupt decay
Tries to ramp into drawing more cards, doesn't find the answer and concedes before my turn 3.
5-3 for 33rd place - one off from cashing in :(
mud player finished top seed in top 8
Seriously if you don't have canonist main you're doing it wrong. It has literally won me every game!
My deck list was the same main as Jack's but had 3 firebolts 1 pyroclasm, and 1 containment priest instead of his 4 bolts and 2 pyroclasms
Priest got me just 1 win but she did enough I think.
