Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I edited the report to include a link at the front. Barreling is from this: http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/s...l=1#post863105
A reply making fun of BURG's manabase.
I chose revoker as just a generic catch all answer since I liked it so much pre-treasure cruise. It also is better than canonist against bug, which I expected to come back in large numbers. Obviously it also has applications vs storm, just to a lesser extent than canonist. I only think I tutored it up once in the finals so I could lock down seismic assault. All other times it was already in my hand.
The three bridges were a nod to goyf, yes. But it was also just the thought that bridge is often the card you want to see most when you are in a bad situation. Not to mention that nearly all decks are using creatures to beat us, even miracles and lands. Could easily be another revoker or whatever hate piece you want. I also will board out tutors or go down to 1 so that I don't need to fetch plateau as often against wasteland decks, so its nice having the higher bridge density.
Could all be wrong and/or suboptimal, it's just been working for me

Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
So I just finished putting together the strawberry shortcake version and am wondering what some good side board cards are for a DnT + G/Wx heavy meta. My board right now is the same as Jack's -1 firebolt +1 grafdiggers cage.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Milo,
My meta is quite infested with non blue decks from time to time. Over the last two and a half years of playing all versions of painter I have found a mono red shell with spellskites (2) to be the best route to beating them.
Often these decks are poised to easily stop a combo can typically lack double removal.
While I have wavered on my support for fire bolt from time to time it is quite strong in these Mu's and I wouldn't go below 3 (bolt is OK here too).
Overall a protected bridge is often game. Spellskite and a welder or two goes a long way to achieving this.
If you suspect a lot of hate a one of koth or chandra sideboarded in can steal a lot of games.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I've had a lot of success with Pyroclasm out of the board for those types of decks. I'm not a fan of Firebolt, though I acknowledge Jack's had much success with the card.
I'm back on Painter and T8ed a smallish event this weekend (~30-35 people). Still running mono red. I'm trying out a one-of Rabblemaster. It was a mixed bag. Brought the beats and was the catalyst in G2 of a Storm matchup, but having it run a token into Batterskull over and over in a Stoneblade matchup (B-skull came down after the Rabblemaster) kind of sucked (though a top decked Stone at 1 life saved the day there anyway).
In mono red I'm also thinking of switching to Evolving Wilds over fetches...Burn is a deck (unfortunately) and the life points matter there...
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Evolving wilds ? Really ?
I don't think playing lands that enter the battlefield tapped is the correct move for beating any deck, let alone burn where you need to be as fast as possible. Just play all mountains (but this weakens your tops considerably) , or play shortcake and have access to crazy silver bullets against burn in the board.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I would run dragon's claws in the board before I would run evolving wilds. Why make your matchup against everything else worse just to be better against burn?
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Misread Evolving Wilds, nvmd. For some reason I thought there was a fetch-only-basic card that didn't enter tapped and didn't cost life. I saw EW on the spoiler list and figured it was a reprint. Just didn't read it closely.
I hate Burn. This deck is designed to prey on the people playing good and expensive decks, and it drives me nuts losing to "this is my first legacy event and I'm playing burn!" guy. I'm too stubborn for my own good and should probably just move to R/W which at least has some board options for the matchup.

I have seen some delver decks running SB Ivory Tower in burn heavy metas. I am not familiar enough with contemporary Painter and Burn lists to say whether it's sufficient. Just wanted to point out that a couple of colorless options do exist, provided you have the SB space.

glad I'm not the only one who had that thought
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
How many painter decks do you see in any given tourney? How many new players jump straight to painter?
How many burn decks do you see in any given tourney? How many new players jump straight to burn?
It's hard to outplay someone in truly horrid matchups. Most good blue-based players at least have a chance against Painter. That was my point, nothing more.
Surely I'm not the only one who dislikes burn this much? Burn's a fine (good really), it just makes for mindless matchups. The fact that it's everywhere in my local meta i suppose is some extra salt for me.

I think I hate burn more than you possibly. I specifically built Reanimator with a MD empyrial archangel to deal with my heavily infested burn meta. It's died down a bit but I forever have the reputation of Reanimator guy.
Burn makes me so hesitant to bring Jund and Lands to my weekly events. Also it warps the hell out of my Painter board list.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
When I started thinking about the Burn matchup as very similar to storm, and boarding more or less the same way, I've had significantly more success playing against it, going for Thorn and Trinisphere etc., and also only keeping hands/tapping Ancient Tombs to cast those cards early if I see them. Burn tends to tap out, or come close to it fairly frequently, especially with these cards in play, and exploiting those windows is fairly easy if Thorn or Sphere is shutting off Fireblast for removal.
It's also totally possible that I've just been extraordinarily lucky in the match up lately, but I'm not really concerning myself with it too much any more since U/R Delver has gone away and burn hate doesn't really accomplish much outside of its intended matchup.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
For shortcake players, a one-of sphere of law is really worth it for burn and pyromancer decks. it just cripples those decks.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Going to eternal extravaganza, and will be there tonight and tmrw. Any painter players who would like to talk shop, hit me up in messages.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Man, I have been having really good success with this deck online lately. Granted, I am mostly playing in the practice room but people are starting to get greedy with their mana bases again. I am playing in a super IQ on Sunday and will see how that goes. I did give up on the singleton chrome mox. Too many times it was just dead. Went back to a second monkey and that has been a very good move.

All those at EE make me proud and keep me updated. Sadly I can't roll. Get the barrel count high and be sure to report back on how you do.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Recently 4-0 my local weekly with your list. Have a larger tourney this weekend, will report back on barrel count.
