Let's be serious guys. It's a good card and definetely a possible SB card for Death and Taxes, but why would you want to cut anything from the current Death and Taxes Maindeck list, if you are already favored against Miracles, Sneak Show, RUG Delver etc.
Matchups Death and Taxes has problems:
Jund, Esper TNN with Zealous Persecution, Engineered Explosives,..
It does nothing against Jund except being 3/1 and dying to any removal and creature.
Against Esper? The strongest card is TNN with Equipment, Jace is not anymore in the Maindeck postboard...
It's a good card. Definetely a SB staple and maybe a 1-2 of in the Maindeck, because i don't see anyone cutting cards like Serra Avenger, Flickerwisp, Thalia, Mother of Runes etc. Maybe the Mirran Crusader but i think the new legendary cat will get this slot.
....okay, now you guys are getting out of hand. I get it, it's the first really playable Legacy card from the set (Brimaz is maybe borderline,) but don't lose your shit.
It doesn't stop Top, it doesn't stop Jace really, just means that they can't activate one ability (of four.) What control deck even plays Ponder? It doesn't stop Ad Nauseam. Doesn't stop Stoneforge, doesn't stop Dark Confidant, doesn't stop Cascade. Doesn't stop Loam. It doesn't do shit to Emrakul, doesn't stop someone from just landing Griselbrand as a 7/7 flying lifelinker and beating your face in.
I think it's a very Legacy playable card, but it's not broken and it's not going to make blue suddenly not the best color, cool your damn jets.
Oh I was talking about D&T, that they could play both. For Goblins, they need Thalia. This vs. Thalia, I much prefer Thalia overall as a non-blue answer to combo.
Though with Merfolk... standstill is no longer played in Merfolk. And consider this: standstill only works against combo decks, fair decks beat it all the time. So Merfolk could in theory play brainstorm - but they can't brainstorm as well as other decks and lose that fights. Almost all blue decks run cantrips. This shuts those down, while providing a 3/1 beater that takes heat away from other creatures. In addition, this + Merfolk's counters = death to storm and a huge tax for other combo decks, while providing an extremely fast clock.
But she is white and not blue so
Let us be excited! This is a specifically anti blue card. Wizards has given all the cool toys to blue, or easily splashable, and this is a really good one that blue does not want to play.
It does absolutely nothing against fair decks but gives you options and a chance... All we want is a chance.
We all know that it is gonna just get removed, killed, bounced, discarded and eventually just be a sideboard option to decks that don't play blue/draw cards, but right now it is the light at the end of the tunnel, the 72 virgins, the full Monty, we can forget the real world for a little bit.
Enlightened tutor fetches SoL and anvil of bogardan which is a lock..right?
Also Merfolk are you guys serious. You want to splash white for a hatebear that's not a merfolk and also shuts off Silvergill Adept.
Okay I'm going to ignore that D&T doesn't have a good matchup against most builds of Miracles, partly because they're too disparate and partly because I know D&T players all believe that regardless.
This is still the wrong way to evaluate how to metagame. The point in building a maindeck is to present the strongest possible deck against the field as an average, not have the fewest possible bad matchups per se.
Not impressed, at best it's used in Maverick in order to break the assymetry of Sylvan Library and Dark Confident in comparison to Brainstorm and Ponder, and that deck already has access to nine, virtual hate bears between Thalia and GSZ -> Teeg not counting any additional Ethersworn Cannonist from the board. It's not even fast enough to stop a combo player from playing his first or second cantrip, or powerful enough to stop him from going off as long as he chooses Past in Flames or Empty the Warrens. Golgari Charm and Dread of Night have greater utility overall, and decks like ANT with 16 cantrips will probably adapt by playing Thoughtseize instead of Duress in order to stop hate bears pre-emptively. I might have been impressed if it read, "your opponent's may not draw more than 1 card a turn" so you'd actually have a reason to play it over Meddling Mage but alas it's just one more hate bear for the pile in Death and Taxes.
It's an ok card that makes the cut in Legacy, but it's not a new, format defining card like Deathrite Shaman by any means.
You guys are right - I guess I am just jealous of D&T, I love this card
Altho' in all fairness Sneak Attack has a serious problem on its hands, if that deck has to rely on Daze in order to stop a MD hate bear then it's going to become significantly weaker vs the format as a whole and unlike Meddling Mage they can't just SB in Pyroblast over a more linear card like Pyroclasm. If WW.dec can drive down the numbers of Sneak Attack in the format, the card seems like a positive contribution to the format.
This card makes me so happy. I might put down my Brainstorm decks again.
I mainly play Miracle and i have like 100-200 games against GOOD Death and Taxes pilots. The problem of this matchup is that luckily for me the majority of Death and Taxes pilots play like shit, but if you play against a good Death and Taxes pilot Death and Taxes is slightly favored.
New card still doesn't do anything meaningful against TNN, so you want to Maindeck a card that makes the opponent not play his Brainstorms while he's killing you anyway with TNN and Jitte?
Are you the guy who thought during spoiler season of Worldwake that JTMS is bad and FoF and Gifts are superior?^^
lolwut. What flavor of idiot casts Ponder with this in play? Did you Mindslaver him or something?
I mean, let's get real here: if there's one thing that's been proven over and over and over again, for years, it's that you are on average much better off being the Brainstorm deck than you are not being the Brainstorm deck. The deck that is currently RUG Delver has existed in some form and been at least decent in the format since, what, 2006? Decks that don't run Brainstorm fade in and out of relevancy because they are - for the most part - metagame calls by people specifically attempting to attack the Brainstorm deck du jour. There have been plenty of cards printed that make life rough for blue decks and, guess what, there's still blue decks because Brainstorm is still a nuts card. Your Brainstorm-playing opponent is more likely to have a removal spell in hand or on top of his library than your non-Brainstorm-playing deck is to randomly draw this guy. If you're going to bring in E. Tutors specifically so you can find your X/1 - in a format full of Bolts and Punishing Fires and Golgari Charms and Abrupt Decays and Stoneforge into Jittes and whatever else - then okay, you got me, you spent two cards to make your opponent's draws as consistent as yours.
