Has anyone put in some time with Collective Brutality? I know we started some discussion, but could not agree which card(s) would be cut to make room for 1 or 2 copies of this card.

Has anyone put in some time with Collective Brutality? I know we started some discussion, but could not agree which card(s) would be cut to make room for 1 or 2 copies of this card.
I use 2 maindeck in my UBg reanimator. Its a damn nice card!
No... I was going to play a side event at GP Denver with 2 Collective Brutality replacing 2 Thoughtseize maindeck, but ended up audible-ing to a different brew at the last second. :(
I've been experimenting with it, dropping Thoughtseize for it.
I play in a meta with a lot of Infect and D&T and DRS, so it's been working pretty well for me, but I would probably run Thoughtseize main over Brutality if I were playing in a large tournament.
I think the card is a meta call. Being able to nuke a DRS and Thalia game one is pretty great, as people in my meta will keep okay hands that contain one of those because they think it stops me, just to get blown out on t2/3.
I emailed .dk, is anyone here planning on going to the GP next week? I'm near Denver.
You did? I didn't get it.
Regardless, I'll be there. :)
Ok, pm sent.
New here and love tin fins, after skimming through the last30 pages this is what I changed my deck to
Decklist:
4 Marsh Flats
4 Polluted Delta
1 Scrubland
1 Swamp
1 Tundra
3 Underground Sea
1 Chrome Mox
4 Lotus Petal
4 Brainstorm
4 Cabal Therapy
1 Children of Korlis
4 Dark Ritual
4 Entomb
4 Gitaxian Probe
4 Ponder
1 Reanimate
2 Thoughtseize
3 Goryo's Vengeance
2 SDT
4 Shallow Grave
1 Tendrils of Agony
2 Griselbrand
1 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
SB:
4 Mentor
4 Dark confidant
2 pithing needle needle
1-2 serenity
Some number of plows
Maybe a chain of vapor or 2?
My fnm is up to 4 miracle players :s i also switched out 2 LDV for SDT cuz mentor SB, used to be anti hate before. I also read about u guys cutting some probes, 2-3 seams nice, what to bring in instead?
I don't think you want to cut any probes - particularly if you're running Mentor in the sideboard. Given that you meta sounds like you have a lot of miracles, I might suggest a sideboard something like (assuming you want to stick to Bob):
4 Mentor
3 Bob
1 Cavern of Souls
2 Serenity
3 Swords to Plowshares
1 Pithing Needle
1 Massacre or CoV if you don't see a lot of D&T
SFM+Mentor package was pretty good for me, and likely what I'm going to try to run at the GP this weekend.
If you go Mentor, leave in probe, because you cut most of the reanimation package to bring in the SFM+mentor stuff. I've found a lot of value in having the StP, because it makes Infect easier, makes reanimator easier, and is just good value across the board.
Sick play of the week:
Opponent is on some 4-color midrange list. Has Surgical in hand. On board: leovold, eternal witness, veteran explorer, tapped out on lands. 15 life
Me: life-6, hand: dark ritualx2, collective brutality, reanimate, goryo. Entomb in graveyard.
Escalate Brutality once, discard surgical, kill eternal witness. Reanimate eternal witness. Get back entomb with eternal witness. Entomb Emrakul, goryo, win.
Also, I made day 2 of the GP with mentor+SFM board, and then lost the first round and dropped to crush side events.
Okay, tournament report time: GP Louisville: Made day 2, but dropped after round 10 for a record of 6-4 (6-3 day 1, 0-1 day 2).
The list I registered:
4 Brainstorm
4 Cabal Therapy
1 Children of Korlis
2 Collective Brutality
4 Dark Ritual
1 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
4 Entomb
4 Gitaxian Probe
3 Goryo's Vengeance
2 Griselbrand
1 Island
2 Lim-Dul's Vault
4 Lotus Petal
4 Marsh Flats
4 Polluted Delta
4 Ponder
1 Reanimate
1 Scrubland
4 Shallow Grave
1 Swamp
1 Tendrils of Agony
1 Tundra
3 Underground Sea
Sideboard:
1 Batterskull
4 Monastery Mentor
2 Serenity
3 Stoneforge Mystic
2 Surgical Extraction
2 Swords to Plowshares
1 Umezawa's Jitte
I decided to register 2 Collective Brutality instead of Thoughtseize, and I felt like it was okay overall. In some match-ups, it was great, others it was okay, and some it was awful. 2 mana makes it awkward, but as noted in my earlier post, the card enables some insane lines due to its versatility. I found myself missing Thoughtseize in a few rounds, mostly the ones that lack creatures, but I didn't run into as many of those. I think that the card is still a meta dependent one. If there's a lot of x/2s in your meta, the card is great. If your meta skews more combo/control, Thoughtseize is so much better. I think with a reactive sideboard, it's worth having 2 Thoughtseize in the side to swap out as needs be.
I also impulse purchased 4 hp Beta Dark Rituals, and got to borrow .dk's Russian Children.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, I registered the Mentor+SFM package, as I felt that due to the popularity of the BRx reanimator deck (for whatever reason), there would be a lot of GY hate around and I didn't feel like fighting it all day. The night before the event, every vendor was sold out of Surgical Extractions, cementing this choice. At the hotel, I was trying to figure out what to run as my 15th card, 1 Massacre, 1 Chain of Vapor, 1 Thoughtseize, 1 Pithing Needle, a 3rd Swords to Plowshare, or the 2nd Surgical Extraction. After discussing it with .dk, I decided to go with the second Surgical, as I like bringing it in versus opposing combo and control decks as a way to gain info and disrupt their decks while not compromising speed on my end, and because of the popularity of reanimator. While Mentor was INSANE every game I played it, Stoneforge was mixed. It won me 2 games, and it was too slow in a lot of other games. I like the swiss army knife nature of the package, but I wasn't excited to draw it in a few situations.
Match-ups
Round 1: UR Delver 2-1 (+ SFM package + Mentor + Swords + Surgical - Reanimation stuff)
Got paired at table 666, win the die roll and got the perfect 6 (Dark Ritual, Entomb, Grave, Children, Petal, Land), and proceeded to win on t1. Pretty awesome start to the day.
Game 2 he opened on Triple Swiftspear with Cage and Daze backup. I concede once I notice how slow my hand was.
Game 3 I get there on the back of Batterskull
(1-0)
Round 2 Death and Taxes (0-2) (+ SFM package + Swords, - Probe - LDV - 1 Ponder)
I won the roll and had a hand that was missing an Entomb, and naturally never found it before losing to bears.
Game 2 wasn't much better. If I could not play against white creatures again, I would be so happy
(1-1)
Round 3: Miracles (2-1) (+SFM Package + Mentor + 2 Serenity +1 Surgical, -1 Griselbrand -1 Emrakul -3 Goryo -3 Entomb -3 Shallow Grave - Children)
Won the roll again, and once again got one of those hands where I can't find the missing piece in time. I concede to preserve the clock.
Game 2 I land a Mentor after peeling his hand of Force, and he concedes after I jam out 4 tokens soon after
Game 3 I land a turn 1 Mentor and proceed to mine the salt from him.
(2-1)
Round 4: Bye (Nic Fit) 2-0 (+2 Swords +2 Serenity -4 Probe)
I lose the dice roll, mull to 6, and watch my opponent open on Windswept Heath, Forest, and Veteran Explorer. I get there on t2
I didn't bother taking notes for game 2, but it looks like he fetched once before I treat him to an onion burst.
(3-1)
Round 5: Death and Taxes (1-2) (same as above)
Game 1 I keep a hand missing reanimation, lose the dice roll, and see t1 plains. He ends up casting Thalia, Sanctum Prelate on 1, and Mirran Crusader.
Game 2 I get there on t3 with Griselbrand
Game 3 I draw SFM, it gets StP, I reanimate it to get Jitte, cast Children, and then never get to cast another spell as he had Prelate on 1 and 2, on top of Thalia. Really wishing I had that Massacre.
(3-2)
Round 6: Bug Delver (0-2) (same board plan as Miracles)
Game 1 ends with me fizzling on Griselbrand and him at 2 life. Needed to draw a petal or entomb or children and couldn't find either in 21 draws.
Game 2 he t1 thoughtseizes, takes SFM, Surgicals it, sees Mentor and remarks how bad that would have beaten him. I get beaten down with Goyf.
(3-3)
Round 7: Manaless Dredge (2-1) (+Swords + surgical -2 LDV -2 Collective Brutality)
I get to do the do on t2
Game 2 I go down to 6 and keep a hand of 3 land, 2 Surgical, 1 Swords, and see Ponder on top. I cripple him, but after a long game of taking shots at each other, he gets there.
Game 3 I turn 3 him with Tendrils in the second mainphase.
(4-3)
Round 8: Miracles (2-0) (same as above)
I Probe him and see Top, Counterspell, Balance, Mentor, Island, and Fetch. He plays top, and I turn 2 him.
Game 2 I slam Mentor and he laughs his ass off. He spins his wheels and we laugh when he blind hits on Predict. Cool dude, he was excited about losing to Mentor after getting turn 2'd the game before, and we ended up talking about the deck afterwards.
(5-3)
Round 9 BUG Control (2-0) (same as Miracles)
Okay, win and in time, and I get paired against someone who has only played Modern at a large tournament and only Legacy a few times. I Probe her and see Goyf, Lily, Swamp, Bayou, Decay, and Waste. I treat her to a t2 onion burst.
Game 2 I get a t1 SFM and start chugging away wither Batterskull. She eventually lands a needle on Skull, deals with SFM, and I barely get there with Mentor tokens (okay, I was at 18 life, but out of cards in hand and only had 2 tokens versus a board of Goyf+ DRS+ Tar Pit.
I crush her dreams of making her first day 2 (it was my first day 2 as well), and get revenge on a deck that beat me by a slim margin earlier.
(6-3)
Round 10 Infect (0-2) (+ SFM + Jitte +2 Swords, - 1 ldv -4 probe -1 ponder)
He opens on Hierarch, Sylvan Library, keeps both cards and gets there on t4. I had the t3 kill, but due to him keeping the 2 extra cards, I assume he had drawn Force, so I blind therapy. My mouth said FoW, but my heart said Pierce, and of course the heart was right. Since I had no Ritual, I couldn't play through the Daze, and try to Brutality his Elf. He pierces, then kills me.
Game 2,I blind therapy t1 naming Invigorate, and see BSx2, Elf, lands and Berserk. I sit in the tank on t2 on playing a blocker (I had Children+SFM in hand) or going for LDV to set up the t3 kill. I decide to set up for the t3 kill and get punished when he gets the Invigorate after 2 brainstorms+fetches.
(6-4)
At this point, I decide to drop, as trying to run undefeated to maybe get money sounded awful, so I went and played side events all day. I was pretty stoked on making Day 2, as I had missed it in the past with a couple of 6-3 records on tie breakers.
Side Event 1
I didn't serve enough Onion Bursts, and I kept wanting to draw those Dark Rituals, so let's do it.
Round 1: Show and Tell (2-0) (+2 Swords +2 Surgical -1 Ponder -2 LDV -1 Probe)
I get to hard Reanimate Griselbrand on t1 via Dark Rit, Bruality, Reanimate, and get him down in 2 turns
I Probe his hand, see the t2 Show and Tell, so I cast a ponder, shuffle, and rip Emrakul off the top. In a rare turn of events, he shows me Griselbrand, and I show him Emrakul. He scoops it up.
(1-0)
Round 2: 4 color Leovold dudes (2-0) (+2 Swords +2 Serenity, -4 Probe)
He opens on Heath, fetch forest, Top. I blind Therapy naming Brainstorm and see Pridemage, Eternal Witness and Karakas. It didn't matter, because I turn 1 him.
Game 2 I rip that insane play I posted a few posts above.
(2-0)
Round 3: Show and Tell (1-2) (same as above)
I get him on t2 game one
Game 2 we spin our wheels until he gets his combo off first
Game 3 happens the same, I was unable to find a second reanimation spell until I had to pass turn with the kill in hand, and he rips Griselbrand off the top to get there with Sneak Attack
(2-1)
Round 4: Turbo Depths (+2 Swords +2 Serenity -2 Collective Brutality -1 Probe -1 Ponder; I didn't realize until after that game if I swords Marit Lage, it's incredibly awkward, but oh well)
Game 1 he had a weird board state that allowed him to get Marit Lage to block through Emrakul, so I tendrils him for 20 before the attack step.
Game 2 I keep a 6 with Land, Petalx3, Ritual, Griselbrand. I draw 2 more lands and windmill slam Griselbrand. He answers with Marit Lage, and I was unable to draw into the combo with 2 draw 7s.
Game 3 I mull down to 4 and get t3 Marit Lage again, with a hand of Ritx2, Entomb, Grave, LDV, Entomb. So close, yet so far.
(2-2)
For my second event, I crack out Belcher and go 2-2 again. I get to turn 1 with the Cannon for the first 5 games I played, before losing the next 3 games, but I did get to wreck a dude playing a sweet Hypergenesis deck through Chancellor, assuming Reanimator and going for Diminishing Returns to draw into Belcher over trying to get there with Goblins, and then draw the perfect 7 with the Cannon.
The last bit of magic is the best. Last night in town, in a beer and food induced euphoria, myself, .dk, and the rest of our hotel room drive to wal-mart, buy 2 holiday gift boxes so we can do a draft in the hotel room. We also pick up 2 six pack tall boys of PBR, and I got to laugh at the Colorado boys marveling at the cheap price of beer in the Midwest. We realize we don't have enough basic lands, so we draft sitting around the bed (5 of us), and build decks with our entire pool, and adding a rainbow land to our battlefield each turn. We end up playing some 5 player game, where the two people next to you are your allies, and the two across were your enemies, and you won by being the first to knock out your enemies. Despite .dk and I being Uber Allies game 1, we opt to not help each other as I go balls to the wall aggro against both enemies at once, while .dk goes at it with my other ally. Eventually, I get knocked out first with one of my enemies being at 1 life with a Chandra Emblem and the other with no board+9 life, and I don't remember who wins because 3 days on 7 hours of sleep starts getting to me.
We rearrange for game 2, and this time I get to go full aggro against .dk and proceed to get knocked out first again. I pass out while they finish the game, because I had to drive back to STL in the morning and didn't want to pass out and die.
In short, weekend was great, I met 2 of my goals, played lots of great magic, met a lot of awesome people, and had a lot of great food.
Props:
Beta Dark Rituals replacing those miss matched ones everyone rags on me for
Making my first Day 2
Lots of t1 kills
INSANE PLAYS
.dk letting me crash with his crew
Meeting KaiSchafroth and loads of other people I interact with on Twitter
Prime Rib dumplings and beer cheese burgers
great company all weekend
Slops:
Not trusting my gut on naming Pierce against Infect
Venue making us pay to park every time we wanted to get in
.dk playing Aluren like a chump
not getting the Godfather at that restaurant
my inability to sleep during magic weekends
not playing Massacre in the main event
Stoneforge being too slow in a few games.
Last minute thoughts. I over thought my boarding plan versus Death and Taxes, and I decided that if I ran into the deck on Sunday, I would just board in 2 Swords and instead just try to get them on t1 or 2 instead of having a few more answers. It didn't come up again.
I don't know if we had discussed it in options to pair with Mentor, but after sifting through 400 cards, I came across Treacherous Pit-Dweller as an option.
BB
4/3 with Undying, when it enters the battlefield from the GY, target opponent gains control of it.
So, it's castable on our manabase, it's able to be powered out with a dark ritual, comes down early, bashes for 4. I don't think the clause will come up, because the most common removal spells are Swords and Decay, and nobody keeps Decay against us. It's larger than most creatures, so they would have to double block it or block it with Goyf, but even holding it back makes them less likely to swing so we can dig into Mentor. It's probably awful, but at least when it gets swords, it doesn't leave us stranded with an uncastable batterskull in hand.
After a lot of discussion with .dk and kai, I still dig Tendrils, but definitely can understand why dropping it for Reanimate is great with the Mentor plan. I also still prefer LDV over Top, but only because I value it's ability to set up the t3 as well to find Serenity or other random pieces more than I value Top's synergy with Mentor. Sure, it smooths out the draws, but those first 3 turns I would rather be casting cantrips, discard or winning instead of spinning Top. We also discussed Path over Swords, but I think that getting the odd times of ramping ourselves by hitting our own dude isn't worth giving our opponent a land most of the time. Yes, our opponent gaining life isn't great, but the only time it's truly awkward is against a 20/20.
Deck felt great all weekend, and seeing reanimator in the finals makes me think that we could have definitely got there if it weren't for at least 2 of us playing the deck in the main event.
Awesome report, awesome tournament, awesome weekend, awesome deck.
I am a chump, you're right. What a terrible decision.
Just to finish off the bits after you passed out... Turns out both myself and another Colorado guy won BOTH games of tallboy pentagram magic. And we had 1 prize pack... so we have a playoff to determine who gets this amazing prize. And of course we play a match of Legacy. He is on UR OmniShow (that I helped him brew up Friday night - sweet list, really) and me on... you guessed it, Tin Fins.
I can't say I remember the match all that well, since it happened around 4am. I believe I beat him 2-1.
Game 1: I do a really dumb thing and brainstorm back a griselbrand when I know he has Show and Tell in hand. Whoops... I think I lose this one to stupidity.
Game 2: Stayed on reanimation game 2 boarding in a flusterstorm and chain of vapor for 2x Sensei's Divining Top I believe. I play through his hate and flusterstorm a Force of Will that I know he has and do 22 to him very easily.
Game 3: Discard him, and make Griselbees pretty early, but had spent my land drop so I had to draw more post combat and win the hard way. I'm not running Tendrils either so.... lets see if my exhausted brain can figure this out. I draw, find IMS to cast the children in hand, so we're in business. Proceed to draw and go infinite (apparently playing the fastest that any of my crew has ever seen me combo off - PBR helps with that I guess) to cast Emrakul. But whoops! I have 0 cards in library cause I didn't sacrifice a petal! So I have to sac Emrakul to a Cabal Therapy and do it again to not deck myself. Geez. That's what I get for not playing this deck for 9 months.
Also, turns out I really missed casting Dark Ritual. I need to fix that.
So, I win our Tallboy Pentagram Magic event! And crack the prize pack seeing the rare is.... Dubious Challenge. Of course it is. So I give the pack to Lee (Colorado guy in the playoff) and he has me sign Dubious Challenge. Fitting.
Funny thing... That match ALMOST made 2 coloradans miss their uber and flight out! A match of Legacy is THAT important.
So yeah - awesome weekend. Great hanging out with everyone!
