This is long and ugly. If you commit the Displacer first, Shriekmaw will win. If you commit the Priest first, Shriekmaw also wins by killing it first and then displacing Shriekmaw is embarrassing. So I can to make a Firebrand and run at you, but then you can eventually make 1/1s. And Den can't attack because if it trades with Containment Priest then I run out of mana. I think this is LL, but I'd appreciate more eyes on this.

I think dte wins OTD. If Goblinsmashmaster keeps attacking with neonate, you add counters to your calciform pool until you have 6 counters, then, on your mainphase, you float 7 blue, and play drake targeting welder. They have to weld in titan, and then you just bounce titan and play borrower. At this point, GoblinSmashmaster has an empty board, except for a drake, and dte has borrower, welder, and both lands. Borrower and drake stare at each other (borrower can block flyers), and eventually you just win by attacking with your manland.

EDIT: missed that dte had already addressed this point.

OTD you can play either Firebrand or Scavenger before Maggot lands, but not both because your sacland ETB tapped. Playing Firebrand is the same as when I'm OTP. If you play Scavenger, then Maggot takes Firebrand. If you try to race me, I have 4 power to your 3. If you stay back, I give Mutavault pro-green and attack. 6-0

2. GoblinSmashmaster: Great Furnace, Goblin Welder, Insolent Neonate, Triplicate Titan
OTP Maggot stops your combo. OTD you get Titan and I lose. 3-3

3. dte: Hall of Storm Giants, Calciform Pools, Brazen borrower, Gilded drake
Interesting deck. There's a lot going on here, so I may miss some lines, but here's an attempt. OTP I think I can just take Borrower with Maggot, and then just keep attacking. If you Drake my Maggot, I can pro-black Mutavault and attack you with Drake and Muta. If you Drake my Giver, I can just attack with Mutavault and Drake safely. If you don't play Drake then I attack with everything. All of these should kill you before you can stop me with Hall.

OTD is more complicated. You can Drake to steal my Giver, but that's the same line as above. Your way to win requires resolving Brazen Borrower, and your only way to do that is to cast Petty Theft on my Giver, so you do (on your turn or mine, doesn't matter). You've got inevitability with your land, but we end up in a race situation because Borrower can't block my creatures.

You can get one potential chumpblock with Cutpurse, but I should be able to play around that by also attacking with Maggot. If you chump early, then I can attack with Maggot and Mutavault for the rest of the game, so you need to chump last minute. Something like:

You could also try to build up more counters so that you can cast Shriekmaw off Slagheap alone after trading your Den. Let's check that

Nice deck. OTP Maggot takes Shortfang, and then I win the Mutavault wars because mine can become pro-colorless. OTD I can't stop Shortfang from landing and flipping. 3-3

Finally had a little bit of time to come up with something that wasn't just a resubmission, and also had time to calculate results. Brain Maggot seemed like the best remaining legal disruption, and I wanted a way to protect him from Fanatical Firebrand, so I landed on this.

I think this was mostly covered but yeah, all I have to do is lead with Mutavault to draw vs LackeySettler. T1 Mutavault forces Settler to avoid Maggot, and then I can just play a 1/2 against two 1/1 Goblins. Faithful can bounce it for a turn, but then I just replay it.

So, things are not looking good for WoP, making a token on t8 seems to result on a loss, let's see then what happens if they keep adding counters

another crucial turn: silkster can activate den and attack, and slagheap will still have 5 counters left (to play shriekmaw a turn afterwards). If WoP plays priest to trade, shriekmaw comes down t12 and wins. if WoP takes it, and goes down to 5, I can't see any line from there that results in a win.

I think this matchup is silkster's.

The main issue is that WoP has no way of dealing with shriekmaw outside of flicking it with a priest in play, and that is *really* mana intensive. Combine that with the 4 mana needed to make the token to stop firebrand beats, and that's just too much. WoP can't trade priest for den as long as slagheap has 5 counters on it.

Yeah, I think you don't lose this due to your initial speed.

T1 Firebrand and attack.
Keep attacking. Firebrand is not worth dte expending resources on (Gilded Drake is bigger, you can recast after Petty Theft bounce, using Drake+Theft works but leaves no answers to Shriekmaw)
You both charge lands and stare while Firebrand deals some damage or stays untapped with ping up.
Eventually dte has enough mana to animate Hall so you can't attack, but you both keep charging.

If dte plays Borrower, Firebrand kills it. Evoke Shriekmaw could kill it too, so Borrower gets at most 1 hit in (flash EOT).

If dte attacks with Hall (tap out), you take 7 damage but then attack back with Den + 1/1 token + Firebrand (5 damage). Because of the early Firebrand damage, this is not necessarily a good race for dte.
Even if dte can threaten to race, you can chump block with Firebrand (+ping) and the 1/1 tokens while attacking back with Den, so you would deal damage while taking done. Therefore it is not favorable for dte to attack with Hall. You will always have mana to attack back as often as dte attacks you, since your manland costs less.

If dte does not attack with Hall then you can't get through profitably, so you both stare and charge.

DD 2-2?

Edit: You can also get 1 Den attack before dte has Hall mana, so that puts you even further ahead in damage and tokens. Hall can't kill you.
If you attack with the token and Firebrand into Hall, if Hall animates you can Shriekmaw it (+ Ward cost) and win.
So you might even have a WW here.

Drake + theft leaves Drake as an answer to shriekmaw.

So play Drake on token + theft, token and firebrand trade (it is best for silk to trade, as from an empty board position and full counters, I can deal 17 damages at once (EoT faerie, attack for 10, faerie is killed by evoked shriekmaw and attack with bugbear to get a gob, attack for 7).

Yes, the most you can threaten from an empty board or tapped out state is 7+7+3=17 damage (EOT Borrower, attack with Borrower + manland, silk attacks & creates 1/1, next turn attack again with Hall while 1st token is tapped).

After that silk has this line:
last turn's untapped 1/1 token chumps 7/7, then counterattack with Bugbear + create new token (-0 to silk, -4 to dte)

That cycle loses for you so you need to stay back to defend. If silk avoids 3 extra damage elsewhere, silk can't lose. DRAW
(I don't see a winning line for you in your comment, just avoiding loss)

The question is if silk can also win? There's early proactive damage: Firebrand + 1 Bugbear attack + 1/1 token.

Your 17 damage line takes 14 charge counters (EOT 1UU + 5U & attack + 5U & attack). With less mana, you can't do the 2nd attack for 7 before silk's new 1/1 token untaps, so only 10 damage. That means silk could take a lot more damage if threatening lethal before you can store 14 counters.

You have to answer the first 1/1 token early, before taking too much damage, so mana constraints matter.
If you use Drake+theft on 1/1 token, silk has these possible lines depending on when you do it (i.e. how many charge counters each player has):

1) Immediately trade Firebrand with 1/1 token. Attack back with Den before you get enough Hall mana, making a 2nd 1/1 token. Then continue same line with 1/1 token attacks. Shriekmaw stays in hand to answer Borrower or blocking land.
--> IF Den can attack again first, win.
IF you get Hall blocking mana first, draw.
Math required to decide between DD or WW.

2) Hardcast Shriekmaw at 1/1 token, saving Firebrand. If you trade Drake for Shriekmaw, 3/3 flying vs 3/2 fear. Both have evasion. Both have same power. But silk's Drake gets to attack first. If you try EOT Borrower & attack with Borrower + manland, Firebrand can chump the land & kill Borrower, so silk only takes the Shriekmaw damage, then gets to counterattack with Bugbear + create token. Due to early 1/1 damages + Drake attacking first, silk might win this race.
If Borrower tries to ambush Drake, kill with Firebrand & Drake gets through. Hall will counterattack for 7. If mana is low enough, Bugbear can chump once and Drake will race before Hall attacks again.

3) Take a few 1/1 hits, then threaten to block 1/1 with Bugbear. Silk has both Firebrand + Shriekmaw left, so 17 damage line is not possible. Firebrand can answer Borrower & maybe block Hall at the same time. 1/1 token has to stop attacking while both players add charge counters. dte has no proactive lines. If Drake steals Firebrand, hardcast Shriekmaw @ Firebrand. silk's Shriekmaw + Drake should easily win while having blockers for the 7/7. Therefore Drake must stay in hand if Shriekmaw is not played.

I haven't worked through all the lines and possible math. But if any of them leads to a win, then silk can win.

Indeed the MU between Silk and me is more complicated than I originally thought. I thought we would start by doing nothing as our deck are mostly reactive, and from an empty board position and many counters I definitely win (I don't have to attack for 10 initially, I can start with 7 and bounce a first token, attempt to steal a potential fanatical, etc). But I did not realise that the token provided by an early attack from the den would change that, and indeed it should be Silk's win.

The maths look awful, we both have too many lines (I can just bounce the token, not losing counters, or try to steal it with or without the mana up for also bouncing drake, Silk can prevent or not the steal by saccing fanatical, bounce the token and play faerie to try to race, for which Silk can either not care and race, shriekmaw the faerie, in evoke mode or normal mode, trade with fanatical, etc..).

I think the argument is convincing for Silkster's WW. Between 1 beat from bugbear, fanatical and the token, I would be at 10-12. I need to always have enough counters to be able to block bugbear (that's 6), while resisting the gobs attacks (so 12 to block a gob and be able to block next turn). And if Silk has 4+ counters, I cannot block a gob with a giant, or shriekmaw will take it.

When I looked at the deck, I thought only late game matters, as our decks seem designed for it. Turns out Silk's is better designed for a bit of tempo as well, and that starting the beats decides the winner.

Getting protection from elementals lets Riders of Gavony deal damage and block, which gives Gwafa Hazid time to deal with Den of the Bugbear if it is activated. WW

OTP if you take Gwafa Hazid with Brain Maggot, I win the race, so you take Riders of Gavony. Since you have Giver of Runes, Gwafa Hazid can't bribe Mutavault and the bribes only last while Gwafa Hazid is on the battlefield so I lose. OTD if you take Gwafa Hazid with Brain Maggot, I am just too slow and lose. LL

I went through and added everyone's scores to the googlesheet. It looks like Goblin Welder is earning a pretty 4.1 round points and still not getting banned. :tongue:
I'm glad that people are on board with banning any winning card for next season. With that in place, I'm happy with a pretty minimal banlist (though I'm still against 1-mana discard).

Only missing results from Asthereal, PJim, and alphastryk, but at least those should be easier ones.

I'm surprised that Welder and Brain Maggots did so well. I didn't like the vulnerability, and I also thought there would be many situations where you commit to Brain Maggot and then lose to the other threat. Giver of Rules was a nice solution to Firebrand. I'm still shocked at myself for not playing Brain Maggot + Master of the Feast off of Ebon Stronghold (I'm not sure I would have landed on Quicksand, but it's the least relevant card). It was such an obvious choice after Tidehollow + Scion! (/s, because it wasn't obvious for me to play it or 10 other people. :tongue:)

I keep thinking that I need to play around this or that specifically and then finding some very impressive diversity, which is good.

@Asthereal, I definitely WW vs gob/Welder, but I also think that you should WW vs alphastryk. OTD you can cast gob first, with battleground untap. Then when you cast Anurid, nothing can hurt your combo.

I think WL is right.

Fanatic first means Anurid T3, so alphastryk can cast something before that.

I spent a long time trying to come up with something yesterday, sent something that I wasn't totally satisfied with, and then last minute changed my submission to this. I thought Firebrand would be mostly the same as Sidisi's Faithful, with the added bonus of getting an extra point against Welder, and beating the Anurid Scavenger deck (which did not show up). I was hoping that there wouldn't be many 1-drops left with 2 health, but 2 Rishadan Dockhands and a Glint Hawk shut me down.

I liked my last deck, but thought it was lacking something, and that it was fairly inelegant not to profit from having a manland that enter the battlefield untap. Also it seemed bad to potentially lose to lackey/settler OTD, I wanted a deck that 6-0 the "good decks I was expecting to see": lackey/settler, welder, anurid/firebrand. It seems I we were many to play similar decks (4?!?), so not so original, and maybe not so good.
Basic plan is to port you, bounce whatever you played, port you out of replaying it, kill you with a 3/1 flyer, with a giant backup.
Let's see:

2-2? what happens here? I can tap hall at some point, you can block giants forever. borrowers can kill each other. mmm. You can always attack me for 1, but as long as we do not have giant mana, I also can. When we do have giant mana, I can tap yours and attack you, so it is not prudent to attack with chaplain. I imagine there are plenty of choice and complicated things to do... But just after PJim's MU, I cant :) So I chalk up 2-2 for now. I am sure I cannot win (chaplain), not sure if FTW can find a way to kill me.

OTP I use Pilfering Imp to make you discard Brazen Borrower, then I am just fast enough to win with Inkmoth since you can't play Gilded Drake without creatures in play and can only activate your land every 7 turns. OTD I think I lose but am not sure.

OTP I play Pilfering Imp, you play one of your creatures, then I make you discard the other. If you played the Glint Hawk, my Assassin levels up quickly enough to kill it and win. If you played the Shaman, you have to kill my Assassin, but that also kills your Shaman so I win with Inkmoth. OTD you play Glint Hawk, then I play Pilfering Imp. You play Shaman, then I play Assassin. You use the Shaman's ability to kill the Shaman and Assassin before it can level up enough to kill the Glint Hawk. If you attack with Glint Hawk, I double block with Pilfering Imp and Inkmoth to trade. We have no creatures left so we draw. WD

If you don't play Magus, I make you discard it with Pilfering Imp and you can't do anything else. OTD you play Magus, then I play Pilfering Imp. If you play Plaguecrafter, you sacrifice Magus and I sacrifice Pilfering Imp. I then play Assassin, and you don't have enough mana without Magus to activate Dust Bowl so I can level up Assassin and kill Plaguecrafter. If you don't play Plaguecrafter, it goes the same way as on the play so I win. WW

OTP I use Pilfering Imp to make you discard Brazen Borrower, then win the race with Inkmoth since I can chump block your land once with Assassin. OTD I don't think I can win if you Petty Theft my Pilfering Imp then play Beloved Chaplain so I can't make you discard anything. You can then flash in Brazen Borrower to trade with Inkmoth if I try to attack with it, and block Assassin forever with Chaplain even if I level it up. You eventually kill me with your land. WL

At this point I'm more going with new interesting decks than ones I've really thought through.

At least this was easy to compute. I hope every single one-drop that got played this week gets banned, even though I know it can't happen.

A second land would have gotten 6 more points against the Dockhands, but the second Lumberjack gets 7 points against the Borrower and the Firebrand (I still expected more of them). I think that's it.

I don't think Petty Theft is good here. On the draw, turn 2 Gearhulk is going to beatdown. If you try to Petty Theft it, it gets switched back into a land. If you bounce the Welder, the Gearhulk is much too fast. You still win on the play, but that's because of the Dockhand.

Also, you must have loaded the page at just the wrong time because I did my matches, posted, then when I went to enter it into the spreadsheet I noticed my error and deleted my entire post immediately (so that no one would reply to it while it had those errors that I had already found).

@Rooster, not sure OTD but you win OTP vs alphastryk.

@Silk, I don't think you win vs me, even OTP. I bounce your baboon, you cannot replay it. And you have to take hall or I port you.

Edit @Silk, you are right about Welder, it is a 3-3. That's the trouble of playing cove rather than calciform pools. Was definitely worth it. And I was pretty fast!

You die eventually thanks to manland activations, even if you prevent a lot of the damage. Bouncing Frost Titan is clever but fruitless in the face of Dockhand (I just store more mana to cast it twice).

Slow formats reward disrupting lands, and I figured Dockhand's time was overdue. (I also figured out how to make a 6-drop playable, which was nice. Turns out the good Titans are still premier options.)
