Those of us trying to meet up in lille still need to fifure that out...
So I had the pleasure of playing in the Scandinavian Open legacy tournament today, ending with a top 4 performance.....
Although I "only" had 2 featurematches, I'm quite excited :D
Finally making the transition to the R/W build, using Jack's list from his latest 4-0 Daily this is how it ended:
http://www.twitch.tv/svmtv/b/673422907 (Go to 42min, 17sec) and watch from there if you like :P
And yeah, GP Lille painters need to meet up :)
Whatsapp group?
Congrats! That Grim Monolith through Chalice of the Void x=2 though... I hope it was just a clumsy play from your opponent. Also when you milled the MUD-players library at the first game you didn't look what his maindeck was packing, did you know the content already?
Could friday work for most of to meet?
Even when watching the replay I didn't see the monolith play :P
But when I killed him game 1, what you didn't hear was him saying: "game!", so I just wanted game 2 asap.
And my friends had scouted some of his earlier matches, and the said it was a pretty standard list, so... :D
Congrats on top4! I was playing there as well with a Rw list and finished 10th with 4-1-1 and terrible tiebreakers (drew with Miracles in the first round and got paired down twice later on, so I knew i wasn't getting into top8). I had a feature match as well (in the last round of swiss vs Nic Fit).
I'd be up for a meet in Lille on Friday, I'll be judging the main event though, so that's -1 on Painter decks :( .
Anyone else going to grind some last trials on friday? (Pun intended)
If so, that's a place to meet : )
Hey y'all,
I went to SCG Baltimore this weekend and placed 30th, going 5-3. It's not a great finish, but not terrible either. It's a few days out, so I forget some of the details, but here's how it went:
Round
1 vs. ANT 2-1
2 vs. DnT 2-1
3 vs. Miracles 2-0
4 vs. Painter, piloted by RomarioVidal (who was absolutely awesome to meet and chat with throughout the day) 2-1
5 vs. Shardless BUG 0-2 (deck crapped out obscenely)
6 vs. Grixis Control 1-2 (very close games)
7 vs. Death and Taxes 1-2 (close games, deck sort of crapped out in not drawing a grindstone for like 10 turns)
8 vs. Deadguy Ale 2-1
The day before, playing the same list, I played one of the 4 round "daily events" they run, going 3-1
R1: 2-0 vs. Miracles
R2: 1-2 vs. Miracles
R3: 2-1 vs. MUD
R4: 2-1 vs. Burn
All of my opponents were super awesome, except for one who I'm not going to single out, but had a really shitty superiority complex going on.
On the weekend, it puts me at 8-4, which is not too bad, and I think with just a little more luck in some pretty advantageous scenarios with my topdecks, would have been a top 16 finish in the main event on Sunday. I figured I'd share my list here, since it is rather unorthodox, and with all the discussion of shaking up some of the assumed basis of the deck, might be relevant. Here it is:
Creatures (13):
4x Imperial Recruiter
3x Goblin Welder
4x Painter's Servant
1x Phyrexian Revoker
1x Jaya Ballard, Task Mage
Spells (27):
3x Sensei's Divining Top*
4x Blood Moon
4x Grindstone
4x Lotus Petal*
3x Red Elemental Blast
4x Pyroblast
2x Enlightened Tutor
2x Ensnaring Bridge
1x Koth of the Hammer*
Lands (20)*:
4x Mountain
4x Ancient Tomb
3x Wooded Foothills
3x Bloodstained Mire*
3x City of Traitors
2x Plateau
1x Badlands*
SB:
3x Sudden Shock*
1x Circle of Flame*
1x Rest in Peace
1x Enlightened Tutor
1x Red Elemental Blast
2x Slaughter Games
1x Thorn of Amethyst
2x Ethersworn Canonist
1x Duergar Hedge-mage
1x Koth of the Hammer
1x Engineered Explosives
So first things first - I cut the 5th piece of acceleration, and opted to play all 4 Lotus Petals and no SSG, the reasoning being twofold: 1) Turn 1 Blood Moon seems to be at an all time low in its impact, and while it's still awesome to have, it is not game ending against as many matchups as it used to be. Because of this, I wanted to cut some of the "do-nothing" cards out of the deck, and since SSG rarely does much after turn 1, while Lotus Petal allows you to cast E-Tutors and sideboard cards under moon, I opted to shave the SSG. This has a small negative impact on how often you will Turn 1 Blood Moon, but allows you to play an extra card, leading me to point 2) I wanted to play 20 lands, and have the 19th and 20th lands be a Badlands and an extra fetchland (over a great furnace) and shuffle effect for finding and casting the Slaughter Games in the board. With losing a 1/2 mana source in SSG, and preferring to flood a bit with this deck over being screwed, I figured an extra land wouldn't be the worst, especially if it gives you powerful sideboarding options.
The other glaring omission in the MD is Magus of the Moon. I often feel that this is the worst card in the deck, as it basically is a hilariously easy to kill Blood Moon that enables the very removal spell that kills it. With the possibility of going to 3 Enlightened Tutors in the board, I feel that this card is just not relevant against enough of the metagame to be worthwhile, when you can have 7 copies of actual Blood Moon instead of 12, but have 5 of them be pretty terrible and require you to burn an Imperial Recruiter for. When I found myself boarding out one of my Moon effects against Lands at my LGS, I realized that this card is a do nothing in just about every matchup with the exception of BUG, which is a pretty good, although tricky, matchup anyway.
With this in mind, I decided to play a MD Koth to add an alternate win condition, and improve my Miracles matchup, which I expected to see a lot. Koth showed up and killed every one of my 3 Miracles players in game 1 over the weekend, and sealed the match in 2/3 of the times I played it. We all know Koth is good against Miracles, but the possibility of having him Game 1 drastically improves the matchup, not just this weekend, but also in the past in builds where I ran him MD as well. I never once missed Magus of the Moon this weekend, or in the last few weeks of play, except against Shardless BUG, and in those games, really drawing anything but lands would have made the games close. I was also considering a MD Canonist in the Magus slot, but I really hate having it in opening hands a lot of the time, and didn't expect as much Omnitell as I did Miracles, Grixis, DnT, TES, Lands etc.
I guess the next weird thing is the Badlands splash for Slaughter Games. Slaughter Games is a huge trump in also every combo matchup, and particularly Omnitell. With more shuffle effects, more Tops MD, more fetches, and more Lotus Petals, playing a game where you stall out until you find this card is very achievable, and to me, worthwhile to not have a horrendous Omnitell matchup. I would, however, consider moving the Badlands to the Sideboard though, as it is pretty awful to have in Game 1, and savvy combo opponents might figure out what you're up to with the splash. The card has other applications beyond Omnitell that should be fairly obvious, although nowhere is it as ideal as it is there.
The black splash also enables Illness in the Ranks, although I opted to play a Circle of Flame instead. I wanted a card to deal with Young Pyromancer that was permanent, tutorable, and didn't sweep my board as well. As a bonus, any such card would be useful against Goblin tokens if I ran into TES. Circle of Flame and Illness in the Ranks both do these things, but have distinct advantages and disadvantages. For the sake of argument, I'm assuming that you're going to be Enlightened Tutoring for them, and not naturally drawing them exposes the differences more severely.
Illness is cheaper, but off-color, and kills all tokens, but not does not hold off regular 1/1 creatures or help make advantageous blocks against 2 or 3 toughness creatures like DRS, SFM, unflipped Delvers etc.
It also requires the tricky combination of both black and white mana to cast quickly, which is relevant if you're playing against Empty the Warrens. It does, however, stop Monastery Mentor tokens out of Miracles with one SB card, which I think is better than questionably boarding in multiple removal spells for a creature that deck might not even be playing. In a corner case, it also stops Thopter/Sword combo. The card does not do anything against DnT.
Circle of Flame, on the other hand, deals damage to all creatures on the ground attacking you, and is on color when you want to have Blood Moon i.e. against Grixis. It holds off Thalias, Revokers, extra Moms etc., and makes blocking with your Imperial Recruiters a lot better. It doesn't kill Lingering Souls tokens, Thopters, Monk tokens, and neither option deals with Flickerwisps.
I don't really know which one is better, although I would say that I wouldn't play Illness without Engineered Explosives, and EE catches all tokens without perfect mana. I will say that though I lost to my Grixis opponent, he did straight up concede to a Circle of Flame in G2 after I countered his TNN, so I believe one effect like this at least is worth it to not be overrun by Young Pyromancer and allow you to play grindy games against these types of decks.
And finally, I've been championing Sudden Shock for a while now, and it was absolutely awesome for me again. I tested out Magma Jet for the last couple of weeks, and I really like that card too. Firebolt is also obviously great. I don't really think you can go wrong with any of these options, so long as you decide what you'd like to do with them. I always assume that I want to kill things unequivocally that mess with my game plan, be it a DRS with a Moon out, or a Mom and a Revoker, or a Metalworker, so I like Sudden Shock.
Last of all, I think Chandra's Parents (Pia and Kiran Nalaar) is going to be super awesome in this deck, playing as a really nice tempo card, removal source, aggressive source, defensive bodies, etc. etc. and can't wait to test this card either in the MD where I have Koth or in the SB. Also probably means that if I continue playing Circle of Flame or Illness in the Ranks, the Circle of Flame is likely the one to stay.
Thanks for reading!
Anyone going to Lille playing Circle of Flame?
@ringo: so how big was slaughter games for you?

I didn't play against Omnitell or combo really, and I didn't cast it. I almost used it in the mirror, but was comboed out quickly in a game. Any by quickly I mean on the draw during his turn 3, when it would have come down the next turn.
In other events and dailies, it has been very good, and has won me a few matches I have had no business winning. I'm still getting used to having it in the deck vs other matchups, so I'm not quite sure I'm boarding it ideally. Most combo matchups where it's obvious to bring it in, it's pretty straight forward. I'm not so sure of its applications against fair decks. In particular, I'm not sure whether to board it in against miracles to get rid of counterbalances or not.
See some of you in lille i hope! I'll be rocking a source playmat if anyone should spot me
Lost to Omnitell, sneak and show and my deck crapped out on me against 4c grixis so I finished the day at x-3.

I went 6-3 as well, lost to Omnitell, Grixis Delver and RUG Delver.
Played the lil' black splash for slaughter games, but also Engineered Plague in the SB. Slaughter games were terribly close at securing me a 2-0 againt Omni as I got to remove Show, and later Omni during game 2. However he stalled even thought we both were sure I had won, and at 1 life and only Emrakul in hand, he topdecket Cunning Wish which found through the breach from the side. 1 life, and I had 2 painters and a hand of lands.
Game 3 he did his thing while I suffered from a mull to 4.
Should've beaten RUG, but when I sucessfully bloodmooned him game 1, it proved ineffective as he had 3 bolts for my painter, and 3 pyromancers from the top ready to beat.. game 2 he had 2 goyfs, a needle, a grudge and all the counterspells needed. He even apoligized for his godlike draws against this particular deck, but well.. sometimes magic is magic!
Grixis was terrible. Therapies ate my hand, and I got flooded game 1 and 2, resulting in a somewhat bitter farewell to the day 2 dream : /
Still quite satisfied tho, first time ever in a bigger legacy tourney!
Not one moon deck in day two and three of the five lands decks top 8. Lol
