Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Hi
I'm still playing Koth x2 against miracle. My answer to Pyromancer and mentor is sudden shock, and I'll test soon dread of night in the sideboard. I hesitated between Illness in the rank, dread of night and sulfur elemental. but elemental is not tutorable -so It would take too many place in the sideboard - and doesn't work against pyromancer. by the way, I think we must play a tutorisable card, so a card for matchups for whom we side out moons.
Grixis delver is easier than miracle or D&T, so I chose Dread of night.
I tried Slaughter games during last tournament. it make me win agaisnt omnishow (my first win against this deck). my oponent was surprised during the second game, and it forced him to play fas in the third one, so he lost. I tried it against miracle, but never drawed it.
my list :
perhaps I'll change the susher for the dread of night

Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I do play one Parents in my board (decklist in signature) and I find it fantastic against several matchups due to the versatility.
If you're ahead but they got some pesky combo-hate, it's amazing for closing games via poking and burning. If you're behind on board against delver, miracles, DnT or similiar grindy decks, it really helps you coming back in just a few turns if left unchecked, and even if dealt with you buy some turns with flying chumpers (kills Flickerwisps, won me a game).
It also does a great job with a bridge in play as you can poke with flier, and use your topdeck afterwards, so in that case it's just as great as Koth. The downside however, is that it doesn't survive just as easy to removal, but as mentioned several times, Koth dies to the token generators bigtime.
The only reason why I'm not maining Parents is because I'm testing burn main atm (Jets for consistency).
However my testing is still a bit limited, only have knowledge from a couple of rather small Legacy FNMs and some casual.

I'm more sold on Plague now. It alwasy has been a solid card.
Question on DnT, do you name human, or what?

Usually yes. Human pretty much takes out everything but flickerwisp and revoker. Sometimes I will target revoker with it if it is shutting off the combo, but burn or blasts can usually clean up a couple of their haters as well.

Glad to see some fellow painter players at GenCon!

Saw a few at Lille but none post here!

Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
So I tried a few games with the couple today and I have to a admit I actually liked it. They actually single-handedly won me a game against elves and work very well protected by a bridge. Gonna stick with it for a little while.

Hey guys, I played Painter for the first time in the Sunday side event in Lille :-) very nice deck.
I am coming from delver decks so a quite big change, still sorting out the right way to play and to side in/out :-)
I have started to play it on our Tuesday legacy event in London, I will keep you updated, for the moment I am playing a quite standard RW list.
Last Tuesday I finished 3-1, won against Tes, Aluren and The Gate, lost against colourless Stax (nearly there on one of the game, keeping a very fast but risky hand, didn't find the sol land that would have let me win that game, but I felt the matchup not that easy, even if I am not an expert of the deck so I probably made a few mistake)

Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Went 4-0 in the daily and i attribute the black splash to at least 2 wins.
I think I'm going to try streaming again in case anyone is interested. I streamed half of this daily but didn't save it. Will start saving them as well but still figuring out how that works.
Anyway, I will stream at channel Rude_Eternal.

I am thinking about rocking this at SCG this weekend. Are running Magma Jet, Sudden Shock, or neither?
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Not sure what black lists look like at all really but Dan I bet you could free up a ton of board spots by committing more to the splash and running kologans command (don't feel like looking up spelling). Take care of removal as well as artifact hate. The other two modes are pretty helpful too

Funny I actually was just looking at that card. It would be really good but I'm still on blood moons as well so I don't want to go overboard on black. The black is for the combo MUs where blood moons are typically coming out in some number. I will have still consider it though, as k.command is a very good card in almost all MUs and can get creatures back which is an added bonus.

Defintely interested. But I always seems to be having streaming problems live. So I prefer to watch replays! Appreciate it! thanks
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
So this past weekend I played in a satellite for Eternal Extrvaganza 3. I knew I would be sleeving up my trusty Painter deck despite my worries about omni. What I wasn't sure about though was whether to play Pia and Kiran or the Assemble the Legion that has done me so well. I was leaning towards Pia and Kiran for a few reasons. I wanted to test out the new toy, it's easier to cast through Blood Moon, and I'm really sick of young promancers. My friends remembered all the times though that Assemble just destroyed them, it can often make a better army than pyromancer or mentor the cards we've been trying to figure out how to beat, I was also expecting a fair share of miracles (I'm always expecting miracles) and assemble just seems a lot better against them as it can't be swords away and terminus doesn't much matter. As I saw all the people sleeving up their counterbalances and punishing fires I made my choice and wrote Assemble down as the final card.

Rd 1 - Death and Taxes
So this deck has been very popular at my LGS and I'm quite experienced in the matchup. My opponent also left his decklist sitting face up while he went to the bathroom before we started. I lost the die roll and he led with wasteland into vial. My first two lands got wasted but I was able to land a turn one revoker on vial and followed up with a blood moon shortly thereafter to shut off all his disruption and lock him into one spell a turn until he found a second plains. Eventually I got there. G2 he had a very aggressive start but bridge and a firebolt slowed down the assault until I got the combo up .
1-0
Rd 2 - Aggro Loam
I got paired against a good friend, Zach who I drove down with. Sucks. Even though I was favored I offered a prize split before we began because this situation sucks and I figured he'd be good to get at least 16th and get some prize (he failed me). We had a very interesting judge call in G2 when we both mistakenly thought the other was conceding, in the end I won 2-0-1 (the draw being the judge call). Both games I cast blood moon and assemble, then he died. The draw game, he really should have won, he had answers for my threats and I was dead on his upkeep to burn ( he didn't have a library though so there's that.)
2-0
Rd 3 - Homebrew helm combo
Very reminiscent of miracles. He sat next to me the previous round and beat my friend Mike onn 12 post. We had a lot of fun with him because he was talking about how much he didn't like helmerator (ub tezz with helm) a deck that my rd 2 opponent has two deck techs with. Anyways in G1 I flooded. In G2 I locked him out with magus, usually I board magus out agaisnt miracles because he gets swords pretty easily but I got the feeling he wasn't playing stp. In Game 3 I was able to get a revoker and a moon out very early and he just didn't do anything as I beat him down.
3-0
Rd 4 - Deadguy Ale
My opponent beat my other friend Ben the previous round so I thankfully knew what he was on and he was one of the few people in the room he hadn't stopped to watch one of my games. During G1 he savagely screwed up. He cast a tidehollow sculler , the cards he saw were blood moon, spirit guide, daretti, and I can't remember the last. The top card of my deck is a painter that I tutored for, I have a grindstone in play with 4 mana worth of lands. he takes blood moon, then attacks with deathrite (his only remaining mana source). I untap and kill him. G2 I landed a turn 2 moon. He was able to land two dark confidants and two lilis but jaya killed all those for me a turn or two after each hit. Finally he conceded the turn before I would have been able to untap and kill him because I was doing a bunch and he was pretty locked out.
4-0
Rd 5 - ID
4-0-1
Rd 6 - think about dreamcrushing a guy on miracles but then I realized he's good aagainst the decks I don't want to see and so ID'd hoping he'd block for me.
Top 8
Monastery Miracles, 4 Color Delver (Ben), Dredge, Dredge, Miracles, myself, and two unknown.
Ben managed to sneak in as 8th seed after Mike conceded to him in the 6th round. When they brought us slips to vote on a top 8 split I was trying to tell what he was leanining towards which I figured was no but I would have been ok with the amount. I ended up being the last person to decide. I knew my opponent was on Monastery Miracles as he beat Mike and Ben during the swiss and I watched part of his final round. I finally decided that the matchup was favorable enough and very theatrically marked "no" face up for everyone to see. Turns out my vote didn't matter anyway.
Quarterfinals - Monastery Miracles
So I was immediately a little wary because my opponent seemed a bit shady earlier. Everytime I walked by his match in round six I felt like him and his opponent were trying to clarify things or a judge was getting involved. I know he made an extra monk token at least once. During our match I couldn't see any shady behavior so I hope rd 6 was just a fluke. Our game was very non-interactive. I was on the play and went turn 1 magus. He saw a basic island and a stream of nonbasics. He almost died to magus beats (I should have in retrospect not attacked in case of snapcaster blocks) but eventually I drew the combo while he was almost dead. After the game he asked, "so have all your games been going like that?" To that I replied, "what, me winning? Yeah." Jerky, I know, but I didn't really think before I said it. Sideboarding felt very awkward. I wasn't sure whether or not I wanted Koth since the deck feels more aggressive than the entreat build. I ended up bringing in koth because I figured if he only has 4 aggressive cards Koth is probably still fine. I also brought in the pyroclasm to wipe the tokens (and mentor himself if I got lucky) as well as Duergar Hedge Mage. He had a very aggressive start and I died. When I drew my hand for game three my plan was clear. Throw haymakers onto the table and just muscle my way to victory. I had to red blast a counterbalance on turn two or three but nothing of consequence happened until I drew a third land and cast Koth the following turn which got Force of Willed. I was thinking he didn't have one or it would have been used on saving the counterbalance but I was wrong. I was able to resolve Chandra on my next turn though. My opponent brought monastery mentor to the party and Chandra got scared. She had to start lashing out and attacking all the monk tokens which was shockingly effective. Eventually after growing tired she did Assemble a Legion to help her. My opponent almost fell out of his chair when I cast the card. It soon was making more tokens than him, especially since I ratchet bombed away his mentors. Eventually It got to the point I had the combo all in hand and lethal. I made sure to ult Chandra first (per request of one of the judges) and pyroblasted his counterbalance a few times before milling out his deck and attacking for lethal. Perhaps a bit of overkill but whatever. Also Ben beat dredge.
SemiFinals
I agreed to this split but Ben no sir'd it while I was still toying around with my opponent. I was less than pleased, we knew that we were in seperate brackets so our opponents had to be dredge and reanimator. He didn't know what the potential matchups were or he would have agreed to the split. But oh well. During G1 my opponent mulliganed to oblivion. It was a fairly uneventful game where he had to experience what the deck can do. G2 I mulliganed down to five. We figured it was oblivion but my starting hand and draws were insane. He had turn 1 daze and turn 2 force. I think, and my opponent as well as multiple spectators agree that if I was on the play there was a very real chance I win that game. I basically just played welders, grindstones, and painters. My opponent however beat me down with an Elesh Norn which I assume he got after getting scared by Assemble. He expressed a lot of uncertainty in what to entomb for. I would have picked not Elesh Norn but he still won. For the final game my seven card hand was very much high risk, high reward. It was city of traitors x 2, grindstone, simian spirit guide, pyroblast, top, ensnaring bridge. I hit the tank super hard. This had the potential of me to get super blown out but it also has basically everything I want in this match up short of rest in peace / crypt. Eventually I decided to mulligan but I wanted to see what I would have draw had I chosen to keep. Top two cards were painter and blood moon. TILT. I quickly told the judge I needed a drink of water from the fountain. It was pretty obvious to everybody though I just needed to step away. (Fun fact: I had water with me, though I did actually get some.) I came back feeling a bit better and finished my mulligan. i kept a fairly generically strong six that had nothing much for the matchup in question. My opponent also seemed to have a strangely fair hand. I resolved a top and an ensnaring bridge on turns one and two. Then thoughtseized my magus of the moon I was planning to play next turn but on my upkeep I spun top and found a blood moon. "Oh, aren't you afraid of this card?" My opponent groaned and things started looking up. Eventually he was able to reanimate a Griselbrand anyway. Thankfully for me the Griselbrand was being stopped by e bridge and my opponent was too low on life to draw seven, but I also could no longer attack through. I kept committing dudes to the board like elesh norn hadn't been on the table in the second game and eventually was able to attack for lethal through the Griselbrand. Ben also somehow beat dredge again so we split the finals and got $1,000 store credit each which we had also split with Zach and Mike so we all got $500. I used mine to pick up the FBB Badlands, erm odland, I'd need for the black splash going forward as well as the third 7th edition foil bridge (finishing foiling out my 75, except for the 2 altered lotus petals that some people are giving me grief for ), and an Underground Sea. I think next time I win a bunch of store credit somewhere I'm going to try to get a fbb volc or taiga, just in case they become relevant sometime.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
The top 2 cards were not painter and blood moon they were painter the sensei's diving top. You sir are a liar ;) Also Helmerator sucks ;)

It was def blood moon, the top was already in my hand and when I left I was looking at three red cards. Either way though, still tilting, much like my very show boaty attitude probably was for my opponents during the top 8 :3
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Anyone have any suggestions for the side board in the splash black version over the Chains of Mephastopholes? Thought I would be able to borrow one for the weekend but that fell through.
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
what matchups are you worried about?
