And without a way to sculpt our hands, having +2 cards on your opponent seems better than having nothing to Innocent Blood on turn 1; on the other hand being on the draw means their creatures will often have had 1 more turn to attack before they die.


Any insight on this from more experienced players? I know of some control pilots (like Miracles) who like to go on the draw in the mirror as well.

I know Tom Ross liked to draw when he was playing his Rack Pox deck a while back. For games 2&3, I understand the logic of wanting to get the extra card and keep the opponent from drawing one however I don't think it's the best line for non-Rack lists. Legacy is such a low to the ground format that casting a first turn discard spell into one of our powerful two drop spells is really important. I love taking that Ponder, Daze, or Deathrite while also ensuring that my Sinkhole or Hymn will resolve or the very least will be Forced. I understand the math behind it and there have actually been games where I have chosen to draw, against Burn, because keeping them off an extra card was more important than a fast start to me. Best advice would be to feel it out not even on a deck to deck basis, but a match to match one. Never against an Aether Vial deck though! Unless you have like 2x Pithing Needle or something.

Tom ross do just that when piloting 8 Rack in modern.
Given how typical creature decks are faster to put a threat in play in any case I suppose you don't lose much trying such a strategy. However, you would need a stable mana base, plenty of 1cc discard and sweepers.

So I have yet to actually want to be on the draw with pox, since it offers your opponent additional time to either get around your 2 drop disruption or just kill you without interruption.

Only met 1 matchup where this was relevant anyway, R1 where I played against Esper Stoneblade which is an abysmal matchup anyway.

G1 on the draw I managed to blow a Disk to kill a Batterskull + Stoneforge, only to die to a Jace going +2 from the start on an empty board.

G2 I decided to try out the 'draw' trick, opponent started with a Peedle on Lili - had one in hand -, I thoughtseized Stoneforge and turn 2 Thoughtseized Jace; topdecked Lost Legacy for Gideon, Ally of Zendikar as he had that in hand as well, but he EOT Cliqued me to take Disk, to follow it up with SoFaI, so I had to Damnation the Clique so he couldn't start drawing cards every turn. He then topdecked Lingering Souls so that with Sword was just too much against my 2 bad topdecks.


Round 2 I lost 0-2 to another friend on Infect, game 2 I had turn 1 Peedle on Inkmoth but he just proceeded with turn 1 Elf + protection. It's hard to have both an Innocent Blood for Elf AND a Peedle/Wasteland for Inkmoth so sometimes you just have to keep 1 and hope your opponent doesn't start with the other of the two.


Round 3 I won against Goblins 2-1, game 2 I lost to a Winter Orb slowing me down too much, but game 3 ended with a board state like 2 Ensnaring Bridges, Crucible - Wasteland lock + Tabernacle, and Night of Souls betrayal so I felt really bad for my opponent :smile:
She got me pretty low with Bolts and Tarfires though, Bolted Phyrexian Totem one time but with Crucible out + like 8 lands in play that didn't hurt a lot. Most of the damage was from a 1/1 Mishra (due to Night os B) but I had to start attacking with Totem into the Bolt I knew she had, cuz it was just too painful crush her with just 1 damage a turn while she was locked out of the game.


Round 4 I won against Sneaky Show 2-0; I heard Needle on Sneak Attack, Chains of Mephi against Grisel, + Lost Legacy on Show and Tell is pretty good :smile:
He came close to hardcasting Griselbrand thanks to Urborg, but was 1 mana short and I had an active Lily anyway.


Round 5 I beat Eldrazi 2-1. He actually won game 1 through an Ensnaring Bridge which I thought was game over pre-board. But he resolved an Endbringer through a Nether Void (his only out in his deck), I thought that was pretty cool. (I didn't find Damnation in the 3-4 turns I had left before dying).
So game 2 I Lost Legacied on Endbringer (he had 3 post-board) just to be sure my Ensnarings were safe.


Round 6 I beat Blood Moon stompy 2-1. game 2 he won due to Sin Prodder + Magus beatdown with Chalice protection, but G1 and G3 he always had the wrong hate - Chalice when I had no basics in my opener, or Blood Moon when I had 2 Swamps but was soft to Chalice which he didn't have that game.



So 4-2 and a 13d place out of 46. Even 2 players with 4-1-1 didn't make top 8.
Despite the bad start I was pretty happy, if I got crushed 1-5 I might not take Pox to a 'real' tourney for a while but this made me confident that either some tweaks or just not 2 bad matchups round 1-2, could actually give me a shot at top 8-ing with this deck.

I also managed to buy an English Chains, and some other missing pieces that I had borrowed from friends originally, so now I completely own the deck myself (English/German blackbordered) which feels always much better.

Thoughts on the list:
-feel like I want to try 2-4 Sinkhole again without Dark Rituals main (which I shaved in most fair matchups anyway). Would have improved the Esper matchup (making a turn 4 Jace a lot harder) and Infect as an additional way to deal with Inkmoth or to make Tabernacle better
-that list should probably also run 1 Ghost Quarter for the Crucible value. Maybe that list should also run 1-2 Trini, 2 Nether Void and a second Crucible main :wink:
-Nether Void main in a deck like this didn't impress me - against many matchups it was irrelevant, and without Sinkhole my opponents could too often get out under it and get an advantage over me. Like still dying to inkmoth + hierarch beatdown while Nether Void slowed me down too much
-Maybe Necropolis Fiend should be a Tombstalker. The upside of the ability seems great, but I just never get to delve 7 when I need to, I'm always 1 mana short and it cost me a game today against Moon Stompy
-Maindeck Bojuka didn't do anything except be annoying at ETB tapped and slowing me down...
-Maze of Ith was nice against Eldrazi (but I'd have won otherwise too), also seems nice against an EOT Marit Lage you can't otherwise deal with, but not sure it's worth being a land that doesn't tap for mana when you need it most - it bothered me more than it helped me untapping creatures.
-Fatal Push or Diabolic Edict seems interesting against Inkmoth/Marit lage as sorcery speed just sucks in those matchups. Then again Innocent Blood really won me the Show and Tell matchup, so Push may be not good enough...

Bojuka Bog is cool if you play crop rotation, otherwise not so much. That Seagate Wreckage is not to my taste either. No idea what you could replace them with. Surgicals?

Against blade decks I am looking for a judo maneuver to turn the tables. Suggestions welcome.

I am no doubt keeping Wreckage - unlike Bog (ETB tapped), its drawback (being colorless mana) never was a drawback in any of the games, and it did draw me around 4 extra cards during the day.

The big and the maze don't have to stay as lands, is take those two plus the 3rd innocent blood for a fatal push, the ghost quarter, and something along the lines of another cursed scroll or a deluge. Stoneblade is a very rough matchup, since most of their stuff gets around most of our stuff. Infect has always felt like a decent matchup to me, but most of my removal is instant or recursive, so inkmoth doesn't bother me as much. Personally, I swear by nether void, but I acknowledge that that's a 'to taste' aspect of the deck, and I also acknowledge that there a fair number of times when it gets discarded to a smallpox or a Liliana since it is the card in my hand most likely to backfire.
On the subject of esper stoneforge, I think that's going to be the 'new miracles' matchup, where everything they're trying to do interacts fairly favorably with everything that we're trying to do, and we feelllike were behind for basically the entire game. I've found that cursed scroll helps a fair amount, since it eats every creature in their deck (usually with an equip on the stack) but souls are just too obnoxious without some sort of e.plague/NoSB effect, and they still get to drop walkers on us. Maybe something like get empty handed, drop bridge, needle sculptor, surgical/lost legacy their artifact removal? It's still rough. I don't even like abyss for all that it chews through boards fairly quickly, since it often gets tied up in their unending supply of lingering souls.

Is Lingering Souls actually making a comeback? I haven't seen many decks playing it on TCdecks so far. I think a 1-2(3) split between Dread of Night and Engineered Plague would be a good start. I also like having one maindeck copy of Night of Souls' Betrayal as it helps in a variety of matchups for the deck. The two times I played against Esper weren't so bad, but that was before the new Gideon was printed. Elspeth was annoying with her 1/1 tokens, but they were at least susceptible to our hate cards. I think having three to four -1/-1 enchantments and one sweeper should be good. From there, just focus on resolving a Liliana as they have a terribly difficult time dealing with her in Esper. If you can keep them off double white then you're golden. TNN is normally their scariest threat and his protection is trivial against most of the removal Pox employs. It's one matchup where I wish we had some good card draw available though because Snapcaster provides so much value and gravehate probably isn't worth bringing in just to stop flashback.

Greetings comrades. I've been playing this deck off and on for the last couple of years, along with Miracles and Enchantress. I've experimented with many incarnations but mostly a list close to the one below, or a creature-less version with 4 main deck Ensnaring Bridge among other things. Regardless of version though, I've been off Urborg for a couple of months and have not missed it. Lately I've managed to snag a few victories at my weekly LGS Legacy events, including last week's 4-0! To be clear, I don't claim to be an expert and have had plenty of mediocre results as well. Perhaps the list and/or my play is slowly improving. Naturally with Miracles gone it feels slightly less reckless to run Pox at an event (I fear Lands and Storm mostly). I remain hopeful that Pox can get to a decent place so I don't have to play U/W Stoneblade or anything similarly distasteful.

First go at the Legacy League on MTGO: 4-1

R1: Sneak and Show 0-2
G1: Keep a slowish 6 on the draw with double black and 2 Hymns. Not great with him on the play producing a turn 2 Emrakul. I don't draw Smallpox, which may or may not have resolved through his last 3 cards.
G2: Again 6, this time with a Thoughtseize. I scry away my Pithing Needle, draw nothing and die to Jace later. Shameful.

R2: TES 2-0
G1: On the draw again. Early game he Probes me and attacks my discard spells. Bloodghasts hang out for a few turns and get him low, Tombstalker resolves with him at 3. It's his last turn and he attempts to go off, but something goes amiss and after much deliberation he concedes.
G2: I keep 7 with one black source, Thoughtseize, Liliana, Bloodghast, Tabernacle, Factory, something, something. He mulls to 6. Turn one Probe as always, but nothing to follow. Thoughtseize takes LED after a Brainstorm (I also notice a useless Empty the Warrens). I have enough time to resolve Bloodghast followed by Liliana. Beatdowns until the final turn, he goes off via Past in Flames but Faerie Macabre saves the day, exiling the tutors in his yard.

R3: Soldier Stompy 2-0
G1: On the play this time, I resolve a Rack. Chalice comes down on his side. After this I have a couple of Hymns into Liliana discarding Bloodghast into fast win.
G2: Chalice on 1, no biggie we have a Ratchet Bomb in hand! I decide to Hymn his 5 card hand first though. Oops, Chalice on 2. No biggie we have Liliana! Banishing Light. Np we have yet another Liliana! Cash in Liliana on 6, ult away the Chalices/Banishing Light, reclaim original Liliana, achieve Monarch status via Mishra's Factory, kill anything else that resolves, win.

R4: Sneak and Show 2-0
G1: On the play, turn one Thoughtseize takes a Sneak, let's me know to play around Spell Pierce. That is, until he pitches it to FoW on Inquisition. Smallpox follow up is good, Liliana seals the deal.
G2: Not sure what happened in this early game, he Brainstorms in response to Hymn but it still hits Omniscience and Griselbrand which were the relevant pieces I knew of from an Inquisition. I'm concerned, but he doesn't do much and I can resolve Liliana. At last Griselbrand comes in via Show and Tell, draws 7, going to 10 life and holds there. I have 2 Smallpox and Liliana still on board. Out of curiosity I lead with the first Smallpox, which resolves! As does the second. Finally I uptick Liliana and he discards Force. A Sneak Attack resolves but into the Liliana ult. He keeps the Sneak and an island. Factory crosses the finish line before he can put anything together.

R5: Grixis Delver w/ Thoughtscour 2-0
G1: Hand disruption lets me devour 2 Anglers and a Deathrite before landing a Tombstalker ftw.
G2: He keeps a one-lander, which I don't even waste because I want to resolve Liliana. This works out and we get him to 0 permanents/cards in hand before too long!

Looking for a real bomb for the deck I have been impressed by Kaya, ghost assassin, ie I have lost to it.
Again today I was reminded how good it was when I could not race it with a Bloodghast and Pox. So, feeling its abilities are very poxy I have decided to try switch the deck to BW for a while. I will add Kaya and Vindicate.
Stoneforge mystic and Lingering Souls will wait for now.

It was pointed out to me that Concealed Courtyard would work very well with pox. i will also use Godless Shrine.

For the moment the mana base looks like:

12 Swamps
4 Bloodstained Mire
1 Pollluted Delta
4 concealed Courtyard
1 Godless Shrine
4 dark ritual

At least, those are the cards I have ordered. Any thoughts on the mana base is welcome.

I will probably run two Kaya and three Vindicates in addition to three Lilis and three poxes.

Scrubland, not Concealed Courtyard. Flagstones of Trokair, not Godless Shrine. Vindicate adds to the land killing flavor and gives you game against all Planeswalkers.

On the subject of Edicts - wouldn't To the Slaughter have a place here? It being 3 and not 2 is a downside against a quick Marit Lage/Inkmoth strike, but it has the upside of both being a 2 for 1 easily since delirium is not out of reach for the deck, and also can get a Jace if they don't have any creatures out so that solves another problem there.

^Yeah pretty nice. I am concerned about surviving Lands/Reanimator/Mono-Red/Eldrazi where the cmc is a big deal, as you noted. If Stoneblade decks (which haven't been so bad for me lately, the discard can be oppressive!), or other control decks with Jace become more prevalent I'd run 1 in place of an Edict. There have been plenty of times I wished I had a Hero's Downfall but never got around to trying one.

Therapy rules, and I do consider it (no doubt it's powerful in Grixis and Storm). I could be thinking about this wrong, but I really want my first turn discard spell to hit. I'm probably not good enough with Therapy (especially game one on the play) to take a card out of their hand consistently. I'm in search of whatever vague level of consistency I can achieve.

round 1: Nic Fit.
1-2. This was the only match all night that I brought in Ob Nixilis. He was ok. Game 1 he had recursion via Volrath's stronghold and I couldn't keep up. Game 3 I kept a sketcher with one land, Thoughseize and Leyline. I didn't get there.

Round 2: Bant Leovold
Easy 2-0. I have so much removal, he could never get on the table. I boarded in Needle for DRS and Jace.

Round 3: My opponent No-showed. Oh well, I'll take the win.
2-0

Round 4: Bant Infect
2-1. This was a cool brew, essentially infect with Knight of the reliquary to go big or search out Nexus. I beat him in 3. He was an ex-Pox player, so he knew he was dead, he was as surprised as me when he took a game.

Round 5: U/R Painted Stone
2-1 This was the match that sold me 100% on Ratchet Bomb. These were tough games, with a lot of top-deck anxiety. I brought in needle and 1 extra brutality, and took out Rituals. Brutality was actually very good as clock help, I cast both of them both games draining him for 4 which was 2 fewer top-decks for him. They also were discarding intuitions and killing goblin welders at the same time.

Round 6: Eldrazi & Taxes
2-1. This was a win and in, and let me tell you how excited I was to see turn 1 Plains. the distuption of TKS plus the pressure of TKS and Smasher make this tougher than straight D&T, but overall, not too tough. I brought in Brutalities to kill Thalia/Revoker.

Top 8: 8 Distinct, Awesome Archetypes! I Love this Format

Quarterfinals: BR Reanimator
2-1. So I lost game 1, it was to be expected. Games 2 and 3 I had Leyline turn 0, so I did alright. Game 2 he almost got me, he tendrils me for 12. He had boarded his Empty into the main to make space in the wish board for something. If he had been able to wish for Empty, he probably would have won. Game 3 he Reverent Silenced my Leyline. I cast another, but he had managed to get a Griselbrand in the yard. he was able to get it into play, but I had got his life total low enough that he couldn't draw so it was no big deal. Innocent Blood and he scooped it up. His list with the storm sideboard was super cool.

Semi Finals: Omni-Sneak
1-2. Here's where it all ends. Long, hard fought games. I brought in The Rack, Brutalities, and Needles. Game 3 he's at 6 life, I have 3 Racks in play, he fires off an Intuition. he gets Wish, Wish, Emrakul. I punt the tournament by giving him a wish. If I gave him the Emrakul, he casts it (with Omniscience), takes a turn, dies to the rack. He literally got me with how scary Emrakul is. Oh well, mistakes were made. This was my one problem with my deck. The rack was to increase the clock and pressure planeswalkers, but I couldn't consistently keeps it active. Next time they will be Tombstalkers.

The other semifinal match was Storm vs. Food Chain, which Food chain won. I won a revised Badlands, the Storm player won a Judge Foil Yawgmoth's Will, and 1st and second were a Nether Void and a Lion's Eye Diamond. That Void could have been mine!

Props to Grid Games and Matt Niewola for running an awesome Charity Event. They raised thousands of pounds of non perishable food items to donate. And main-deck Ratchet Bomb. And Top Banning.

Specifically Burn, 4 color control, and Show and Tell. Decks that can win from nothing just by top-decking turn after turn. I didn't really like them in the end because they weren't always active. Next time I will be running Tombstalker for the exact same effect. Shortening the game and pressuring planeswalkers.

Totally agree Props to Matt Niewola! This event has only been going on for 2 years, and has grown each time. First event raised 1200 lbs of food, this weekends event raised 3200 lbs of food!

I got 9th with my GB pox, seems like without miracles the meta is great for Pox.

Rd1 lost 2-1 to UR delver. Could have won but I took a line of play that basically guaranteed the win if a drew a land in next 3 turns (26 land deck) never drew a land.

Rd2 won 2-0 vs Death and Taxes, usually a easy match-up. only times I lose to DnT is when the top deck creatures for 4-5 turns in a row after I stabilize the board.

Rd3 won 2-0 vs Turbo Depths, Collective Brutality is awesome! In game one we played a couple turns of disruption I IoK, him he thoughtseized me, I wasteland depths etc. we get to a point where he knows I have smallpox in hand, he has depths on the field and hexmage in hand. He cant play vampire hexmage bc smallpox answers it or the marit lage he tries to make. he top decks stage but I'm at 21 due to escalating collective brutality earlier in the game. I draw second brutality for turn and he makes marit lage on my end step. I take 20 go to 1 and he plays out the hexmage to protect the marit lage from my smallpox. I have 4 mana so it doesn't matter what I draw I'm just going to pitch it to brutality, I excalate brutality -2/-2 to hexmage and drain 2 life so that I have enough life to cast smallpox for the marit lage. Bloodghast and factory finish him off

Rd4 Draw 1-1-1 with Food Chain, kinda frustrating here, I had the win if I had one more turn, he spent the last turns of the game playing for a draw. Also frustrating bc we both won out and he ended up getting 8th on breakers and I got 9th.

Rd5 won 2-0 vs Shardless Bug, usually a grindy match-up but a lot of mulliganing by both of us turned these into non-games. He went to 6 game 1 on the play, I won on mulligan to 5 cards. Game two I was on 6 he was on 5.
