Yeah this dude is pretty derping good. Probably will have to be changed up a bit to be less powerful (or they just make it cost 10000 mana). I mean like i said, the card ended up getting scrapped. Maybe it just never will see the light of day.
Re: [Born of the Gods] Spoiler Thread
I'm thinking a Crop Rotation+Crucible of Worlds idea could work: like so http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/s...l=1#post783489
Re: [Born of the Gods] Spoiler Thread
See that would be sweet. And it seems fair enough. IDK. I just found out that Mana Vortex is a card so now I want to figure out a way to break it

Instead of discussing all of the things this card can do, you focus on what it can't do. Bringing up edge cases to buttress a critical evaluation only does a disservice to the card and readers of your comment. Just as with Jace you focused primarily on edge cases - dying to Bolt, not keeping the board clear despite being in a control deck, ignoring repeated +0 activations - you do so here with this card by focusing on all of the non-draw "draw" in the format but missing the crux of the matter: that this will severely affect the core cantrips and draw spells of the most dominant strategy in the format.
Being pessimistic in Legacy pays off. The vast majority of cards aren't actually good enough for this format, and many of the cards people get hyped about turn out to be not good enough. The fucking meltdown people had over Temporal Mastery is a prime example of HYPE TRAIN HAS NO BRAKES and also a good reason why you should be critical about new cards in general. What cards can't do is in many ways more important than what they can do; flaws or limitations will be what sinks a card's chances in this format.
As for this card: Chalice of the Void has long been the bane of Brainstorm decks and is one of those cards that people perennially talk about as being totally t3H pWnZ0rZ versus the format. They then inevitably follow it up with a simple question: why aren't people playing more Chalice of the Void? The answer is actually pretty simple: because then you can't play your own Brainstorms (not being able to play Swords/Bolt/DRS also counts, but less so than no Brainstorm). It turns out that it's much better to be a Brainstorm deck using cards to fight other blue decks than a non-Brainstorm deck attempting to shut down Brainstorm. The added consistency you get in the former case is just miles better than running hate cards that seem reasonable otherwise.
EDIT: That BG Legend gives me a raging boner.
Re: [Born of the Gods] Spoiler Thread
At the end of the day was IBA really that far off on planeswalkers? Including jace? The jace train has pretty much stopped and it's price will soon drop because no one plays him anymore. Lilliana is good in BG decks but those aren't taking the world by storm in any means.
Re: [Born of the Gods] Spoiler Thread
Um...Jace is played by Miracles and by blue-based mystic builds. Both archetypes are in the DTB forum. I'd say he's played.

Miracles. Jace is played in miracles, and has it even done anything in months?
Re: [Born of the Gods] Spoiler Thread
I actively play esperblade and I assure you, he is played in many lists, and to much success.

Re: [Born of the Gods] Spoiler Thread
Jace has tanked in play mainly because of TNN. Although I guess if I'm going to catch shit for not predicting the banning of Mystical Tutor, I might as well claim prescience for them printing Mini-Progenitus.
Re: [Born of the Gods] Spoiler Thread
Hoping R&D reads this and prints that BG legend

More so in Europe.

Also, goddamn @ Phenax in Limited. That guy seems like a Grade A Obnoxious Bomb. I guess it's to make up for the fact that he is godawful everywhere else.

I hate this type of random bomb in limited, why bother draft a real deck when you will be crashed by something that obnoxious?

Re: [Born of the Gods] Spoiler Thread
I'm happy to see the Enchantment dude -- hatebears. (The Underworld Dreams witch -- Fate Unraveler -- isn't really playable anywhere, but she's one, too.)
Neither one is the one I wanted (although I'm giggling at the idea of 3-4 vicious little hatebear enchantment bastards working with Femeref Enchantress, seals and an Enchanted Evening combo finish for beer+pretzel night), but it's nice to see they got printed. Maybe we'll see 1 or 2 more in the next set.

No, thats not entirely true. Chalice of the Void is not that much played, because in order to make it work, you need to contruct your deck in a way which makes it explosive on the one hand, but also inconsistent on the other hand. (See Stompy Decks) You have to accept alot of downsides when playing Chalice, for example paying life with Ancient Tomb, or reducing your handsize with Mox Diamond. In other words, when playing Chalice, you are going a high risk by devoting alot of your resources into one card. Carsten Kötter wrote an article about this on SCG where he discussed different shells in deckbuilding.
Spirit of the Labyrinth doesn't have those downsides (besides the fact that you can't play Brainstorm yourself). Therefore I argue, that you can't compare Spirit with Chalice.
Re: [Born of the Gods] Spoiler Thread
Chalice sucks. Its only useful on T1, only on the play and only with sol-lands. Go figure.
This guy is useful at any gamestate, hoses the whole format and is a beatstick at least.

That's a pretty myopic analysis of Chalice. Very few Legacy decks can just blank chalice by emptying their hands turn 1, and players, you know, keep drawing cards as the game goes on - Chalice is often fine even when it comes down a couple turns late. Or even later if you can put your opponent in topdeck mode. Sure, it's not a major contender right now, but it doesn't "suck."
Anyways, on topic: I'm very excited for Spirit of the Labyrinth and hope it sees a ton of play.
Re: [Born of the Gods] Spoiler Thread
Chalice decks are pretty bad when half a meta consists of Wasteland and Abrupt Decay.

As others have stated, it is foolish to compare this to Chalice of the Void.
Comparing this to Chalice of the Void is like comparing Thalia to Thorn of Amethyst. There's a reason Thalia sees heavy play and Thorn sees fringe play as a sideboard card.
