I've been testing that card, not long enough to report anything yet. So far, you can always find something to name, other than true name, pun intended.

Haha, that was amazing. I've managed to pull that trick once or twice to get like an extra Brainstorm, but an extra three cards on top of the first Pierce is nuts. loool
I wonder if using the Volcanic to Top first and "finding nothing" would make it a better sell or if it's too much?
Yeah I think it could have been sold a bit harder with that. It clearly worked though, and once the opponent commits to the idea that he doesn't have the 1-drop, it does make sense for him to spend all of his one drops now - he just fell for it.
The real misplay was the guy throwing everything on the stack instead of letting the CB triggers resolve first; that's how he lost 4 spells at once. In paper, you can only realistically get the second pierce in that sort of situation.
I don't knoooow... I've had plenty of people just toss down two or three cards with zero regard for Counterbalance.
Really, the guy probably shouldn't have cared about the Plow in the first place. If his aim was, as I might suspect, to just cast the Brainstorm then he should have waited to respond to Joe recasting the Top on his turn or testing the waters with his own Plow first and perhaps (though not likely) baiting out the Brainstorm.
Sweet moves.
Regardless of the opponent, knowing about this trick is valuable information and a good tutorial for those looking to get the most out of the deck.
Has anyone complied (or thought of compiling) a list of specific tricks that are possible in the deck? Some of the guys in the D&Ts forum have produced a list of things that you can do with Flickerwisp, cards to name with Revoker, etc. Given that there are tons of decision trees, this could be tough, but maybe even a "What CMC do I want to float vs X deck" sort of things, or a list of Top tricks (stacking the abilities in specific orders).
Just some ideas.
Its been too long since I cast an Entreat. Time to sleeve up those Tundras ;)
EDIT: Whoo! 100
Is Miracles favored in the Landstill match up nowadays?
Like the various Loam decks? I have been doing well against them so far. We have a lot of relevant bomby tools against them. Blood Moon usually shuts them down completely and they have a very hard time dealing with Jace and cannot deal with Entreat. Counterbalance, Clique, and sometimes even FoW are all your friends for slowing down their Loams until you can find RIP or Counterbalance/Top + a 2cmc. Previously, I would have brought in a couple REBs, but Loam decks nowadays tend to favor Jund over the Blue variants.
This is how I board:
-3 Terminus, -2 Swords, -1 Snapcaster, -1 Supreme Verdict
+2 RIP, +1 Blood Moon, +1 Disenchant, +1 Entreat, +1 Venser, +1 Pithing Needle
This leaves me with 2 Swords, 2 Karakas, and 2 Vensers to deal with Marit Lage once she's made, but I'd prefer to stop Thespian/Depths proactively with Blood Moon or Pithing Needle if possible. Humility also isn't the worst option, but can be very clunky.
landstill? RiP + Energy Field. Usually RiP alone is enough. Counterbalance for their 2cc key cards and gg
Landstill? I think we might have a misunderstanding here... first of all... the deck called Landstill is a UW Controldeck based around Mishra and Standstill, something like this one I played last week: http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/s...l=1#post787983
This kind of Landstill is dead since ages. No need to worry about it. The next deck that could be labelled as Landstill would be BUGstill or Deedstill, this one: http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/s...ndstill/page80
It seems that this kind of Standstill is getting popular again - but with red it's no problem, I wouldn't like to go into detail why I think so before the GP - after I will.
What you guys are talking about are Landsdecks with the Dark Depths Combo, right? Whatever you label it, you never ever label it as Landstill, just saying.
Or what are you guys actually talking about?
Greetings
Short version: no.
The grixis landstill deck running around on mtgo right now is a difficult deck for miracles to beat. However, bahra and I agree that it is probably not a good deck against the field. So while frustrating, it isn't something you can expect to run into frequently in live events.
I firmly believe in Massacre for next meta. Just.. any of the creatures around has 2 or less thoughtness but Serra Avenger, Tarmogoyf and Tombstalker..
Grixis too.. (Pyromancer and his tokens, Bob, Snapmage..)
Massacre/Disfigure are next standard for control imho
Thank you for the responds!
I meant a blue based control deck with Standstill and Mishra’s Factory that might feature the following cards:
Vendilion Clique
Snapcaster Mage
Phyrexian Dreadnought
Stifle
Force of Will
Daze
Spell Snare
Jace, the Mind Sculptor
Brainstorm
Standstill
Crucible of Worlds
Engineered Explosives
Supreme Verdict
Sword to Plowshares
Lightning Bolt
Mishra's Factory
I am asking because I have a hint that my opponent will play something like this in the national top 8.
Thank you!
new list:
1 Karakas
4 Flooded Strand
2 Tundra
3 Polluted Delta
2 Underground Sea
1 Swamp
2 Plains
5 Island
2 Marsh Flats
3 Vendilion Clique
3 Counterbalance
4 Brainstorm
4 Sensei's Divining Top
3 Terminus
2 Swords to Plowshares
1 Disfigure
1 Innocent Blood
1 Diabolic Edict
3 Force of Will
2 Spell Pierce
1 Counterspell
3 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
2 Entreat the Angels
2 Enlightened Tutor
1 Oblivion Ring
1 Vindicate
1 Engineered Explosives
35 Other Spells
Sideboard
1 Moat
1 Ensnaring Bridge
3 Thoughtseize
3 Rest in Peace
1 Cursed Totem
1 Counterbalance
2 Ethersworn Canonist
3 Massacre
15 Sideboard Cards
cards I would love to include: more Diabolic Edict, Surgical Extraction and... The Abyss
While I like the idea of playing black, I have a few critics / comments:
- you don't have enough 2-drops for counterbalance (only 5!)
- I don't understand how Disfigure is better than Swords to Plowshares. You are a control deck, why care about your opponent's life total?
- Enlightened Tutor seems bad. It would make sense if you played more bombs and/or Thopter Sword, but in your list, it's just card disadvantage... If you really need it to tutor bombs post-board, just play one in the SB.
- While I love Engineered Explosives, I think it's bad for the CB curve :(
- I like Diabolic Edict. It's another 2-drop for counterbalance, and the instant edict effect is pretty great against TNN :)
- I think you sould play 2 Snapcaster Mage. They are good for the CB curve, and let you re-use Thoughtseize post-board in the combo matchups :)
- Massacre seems great in the meta.
Weird, I haven't heard of any actual Landstill decks being run recently. I can imagine how Grixis is a good colorset for it right now. Does anyone have a list?
1) yup. 5 is way too few. I feel the same every match. short on 2cc on top
2) yup. Disfigure is the weakest spot in the deck. Probably a second Diabolic Edict for both cc and Instant speedness
3) No, it's great. Always. Never felt alone with it in hand. You keep one in your hand and you can counter anything he plays. it's a W Counterspell. Post-SB it gives consistency to singleton: Moat, Cursed Totem, Ensnaring Bridge.
3) Right again. my CB curve is a mess
4) that's way I'm going to 2...
5) I don't like it a lot... I was hoping for better 2cc slots.. but I'm short on ideas..
6) It is. It just opens the table and if you hold an Innocent Blood (for Serra Avenger or the surviving Goyf/Tombstalker) you often obtein a Wrath of God effect for B/1B
Just saying, plain old counterspell is a sweet 2cc spell...
