So, has anyone tested Voidmage Prodigy? Yes, I know the card isn't good. Just seemed like since Counterspell was one of the weaker cards in the deck, why not test out some creatures with counterspells on them that play nicely with Voltrath's Stronghold.
Voidmage Prodigy seems like it could be bad.
Generally, creatures have to be stunningly fantastic in Legacy (or have enough tribal synergy to be very solid). Voidmage Prodigy is not what I would call stunningly fantastic. Granted, he plays nicely with Volrath's Stronghold, but unfortunately, so does every other creature.
Counterspell is only weak because Counterbalance is so strong. Generally, I like to use Counterspell for the rare occasion that Counterbalance can't affect the spell my opponent is using. Voidmage Prodigy could do the same thing, but it also requires even more mana, and it would require that I protect it in some fashion to make sure that I could get the desired use from it.
That seems clunky and sub optimal. I'd rather stick with Counterspell because of how effective and efficient it is.
EDIT:
@Roodmistah: That's fair. I'm pretty sure I'd say that if other people told me to play X deck. But you know, got to ask, right? :)
Re: [Deck] It's the Fear - Control in the new Era
So, Dave, do you want to build a 2nd copy for me to play at the 5th ann tourney???lolz
Re: [Deck] It's the Fear - Control in the new Era
Dude, I totally would if I had a job. But right now, I don't. :(
I'm still looking, hopefully I'll have one soon. Then, I guess I'll think about it. :)
Also, how's the old kidneys? I'm sure you don't need two. :)
Re: [Deck] It's the Fear - Control in the new Era
Dude, having two kidneys makes the chicks go WILD! I'm not sure what they are like in VA(well actually I do, met this girl Mary from Fairfax over the summer, hottest fucking girl EVAR!!) but here in Mass, chicks dig men with 2 kidneys.
Re: [Deck] It's the Fear - Control in the new Era
I like either 2 wishes or a macabre and a dust bowl in the counterspell slots.
That gives you recurrable outs to two types of cards this deck can't deal with otherwise - lands and the graveyard. Of course, they're only good for lategame work, but that's the only time those sources are a real big threat to this deck for the most part anyways.
EDIT: kidneys are sooo last year, thyroids are the new hawt.
Re: [Deck] It's the Fear - Control in the new Era
Wishes would fuck up the sideboard something fierce, and you still haven't addressed my points about Faerie Macabre (and how bad he would be in this deck). Also, Dust Bowl is bad. Wasteland is worse, but Dust Bowl is pretty awful too.
Also, down here in the VA, you have to have the moneys to impress the honeys. You see? We even made a rhyme about it. I kind of miss Lefty, but hey, It's the Fear keeps on appreciating in value so I guess that's good.
Also Morgan Coke, a helpful suggestion, stop liking bad cards. That would be awesome.
Re: [Deck] It's the Fear - Control in the new Era
For the record I agree with Deep6er on most all points. My issue has come from playing on MWS and having infini time and learning how to slowly wrest control from the opponent and grind them down. I start tieing in tournaments a lot. Any general pointers on when to intuition for the win instead of more controlling cards?
Re: [Deck] It's the Fear - Control in the new Era
Generally, I don't have a problem with this. I think it might just be an experience thing.
I have noticed however that when your opponent starts trying to stonewall more than usual, or if he accidentally lets slip any one of the more common tells that's a good sign.
Mainly though, it's a question of going for the win when you know you can back it up. I tend to finish the game rather quickly, not necessarily because I read my opponents, but because I know that I can answer whatever it is they have in their hands. Although, I do play rather quickly normally (a side effect of Solidarity I would imagine).

I will point out that creatures with build in sacrifice outlets play better with Stronghold than those that don't.
For instance, if Eternal Witness also had "Sacrifice Eternal Witness: You lose 1 life"... well that would make me very happy...
Re: [Deck] It's the Fear - Control in the new Era
Yeah, that would actually be pretty incredibly insane.
While definitely true that built in sacrifice outlets make creatures play EVEN BETTER with Stronghold, the fact that Prodigy is bad makes him not play very well with the deck.
The problem comes back to the fact that he costs twice as much as Counterspell.
That's not even counting that on the board tricks tend to be poor. Plus, having to protect him from removal is annoying at best.
If you bring up how I can have him morphed and flip him up to counter spells, there are two problems with that:
1) That's not going to work too many times beyond the first.
2) That adds EVEN MORE MANA to the cost.
It just seems like this is not the deck for old Kai (in a cowcatcher). :(
Re: [Deck] It's the Fear - Control in the new Era
Gearhart, have you considered Chub Toad? He is great with Volrath's stronghold.
I present you with:
It's The Chubb:
4 Flooded Strand
4 Polluted Delta
4 Tropical Island
3 Underground Sea
2 Tundra
2 Island
1 Plains
1 Volrath's Stronghold
1 Academy Ruins
4 Swords to Plowshares
4 Brainstorm
3 Sensei's Divining Top
4 Counterbalance
4 Chub Toad
2 Counterspell
1 Life from the Loam
4 Intuition
3 Pernicious Deed
1 Vedalken Shackles
1 Eternal Witness
1 Etched Oracle
4 Force of Will
2 Engineered Explosives
Sideboard
4 Tormod's Crypt
4 Blue Elemental Blast
4 Krosan Grip
3 Nevinyrral's Disk
You'll notice how cutting 4 Tarmogoyfs for 4 Chub Toad's will effect the deck in the same way Tarmogoyf Replacing Werebear effected Threshold.
Re: [Deck] It's the Fear - Control in the new Era
Man, Chub Toad was so wacky and whimsical the first six hundred times someone posted about him.

It's no Minotaur Advantage, that's for sure.

Not really.
Re: [Deck] It's the Fear - Control in the new Era
So I'm going to bring this deck to a tournament Saturday and I was wondering how the aggro loam matchup goes. The only thing im afraid of is that irritating wastelock. So the main plan I can think of is to get CB up ASAP. thoughts?
Re: [Deck] It's the Fear - Control in the new Era
That's pretty accurate. Because Aggro Loam is generally extremely variable, I don't really have plans for the deck beyond that.
Although, I generally bring in a smattering of board cards. Usually just one or two of particular cards since they're generally not effective as a four of. Like Crypt, Blast, and Grip. Depending on the build of Aggro Loam, I bring in like two Crypts, one Blast, and one or two Grips. What I take out is usually very different (although I definitely board out Shackles for this matchup). Sorry I couldn't help more, but Aggro Loam is a very general umbrella and it's hard to help with something so wide.

Disagree with boarding out Shackles. It's a 3cc slot for your CB, and can theoretically snag a not-already-huge Terravore or a Goyf.
Re: [Deck] It's the Fear - Control in the new Era
The three is mitigated by boarding in Grip, and Wastelands are the first and foremost consideration against that deck.
If you have six or seven lands out then it's likely that you're winning is my point.
Re: [Deck] It's the Fear - Control in the new Era
There are 2 loam variants played here
First is the basics list of RGb with huge beatsticks and thoughtseize (chalice builds haven't been popular here) Crypt doesn't really affect this build imo. Goyf doesn't care and neither does Countryside Crusher. Dredging back loam in resp to the crypt being activated won't get rid of loam either. I'd go with more BEB here (hits devastating dreams/Bwish/CCrusher).
Second is GWb Loam control which plays vindicate/plows and confidant instead of the crushers/Seismic Assault.
I will try out the boarding plan. I think I used to sideboard too much cards.
Re: [Deck] It's the Fear - Control in the new Era
So I played ITF today at a 22 people tourney and got 3rd place.
sligh 2-0
Quin (MWC) 2-0
Eva Green 1-2 (hymn hymn waste waste sinkhole BLERGH)
Scepter chant 2-0
TES (draw and split the prices)
Oracle been a bomb whole day. Saccing itself to get on top vs WoG and being so goddamn funny when everybody needs to read it.
