Hey guys. I am very interested in this deck but so many variations out there. Wilkin was wondering if i could get a look at your list as to the decent finish at SCG Syracuse and see what a decent base to start from would be. Thanks!

Hey guys. I am very interested in this deck but so many variations out there. Wilkin was wondering if i could get a look at your list as to the decent finish at SCG Syracuse and see what a decent base to start from would be. Thanks!
Well my current list is almost identical to my list from SCG Detroit. That list is viewable on starcitygames.com and on tcdecks.
Went 6-2 to finish 21st at SCG Syracuse. A little disappointed I didn't make top 8 but oh well. I did alright. The list is almost the same from Detroit. Except I have 4 lily's main and took out the singleton Gatekeeper. And in the board I took out Gaddock Teeg for a Pithing Needle.
Round 1. UR Landstill. Lam. Won 2-1.
A player I play against often...and promptly lose. I've only ever beaten him playing Landstill when I played Tin Fins. Game 1 he chains a couple of Standstills together. GG. Game 2 and 3, I outgrind him with Lingering Souls. Also a timely placed Surgical Extraction on a Burst Lightning when he targets it with Snapcaster seals the deal. First time I've beaten him playing that deck..
Round 2. Aluren. Casey. Won 2-0.
I try and play a Bob turn 1 (my turn 1, he played land pass) which gets a pact of negation. Puzzled. He then stifles the pact on upkeep. I guess he's on Hive Mind so when I therapy I name Show and tell......nope. I see Imperial Recruiter and eternal witness. Lingering Souls plus SOFI were huge, allowing me to make him discard and blow up enough lands to stop the combo. SOFI also does the job in game 2.
Round 3. Burn. Alex. Lost 0-2
It's burn. Alex goes on to top 8. I don't get the chance to hymn him early.
Round 4. Merfolk. Johnny. Won 2-1
Sofi + Lingering Souls gets the job done game 1. Game 2. I kill his lords with hardcast Shriekmaws but didn't draw answers for 2 True-Names. Game 3. My removal package is too much for him to handle.
Round 5. BUG Delver. Paolo. Lost 2-1.
War of attrition all 3 games. He's able to pull with a delver game 3 and I can't get an answer in time.
Round 6. Dragon Stompy. Henry. Won 2-0
He's on the play on a mull to 5. All I saw was Mountain and discarded Blood moon. I have Stoneforge with Batterskull and SOFI. I guess he's Painter so Pithing Needle and Revokers come in. Woops. He's dragon Stompy. But game 2 his hand was clunky. Turn 1 was ancient Tomb and Jitte. I cast Mystic turn 1. SOFI and Batterskull again. He plays a blood moon but I have a plains and a chrome mox (black card).
Round 7. BUG Delver. Ben. won 2-0
Another GTA player like me. In fact, we faced each other in SCG detroit in the last round where I beat him 2-0, including a game where the game ended with him on no permanents. He has an early Sylvan Library game 1 but Lingering Souls and Jitte win vs 3 goyfs. Game 2. It's top deck war, I get a bit of advantage with Liliana, which buys enough time for I think Lingering Souls to win.
Round 8. RW Painter. Byron. Won 2-1
Game 1, he e. tutors early for the win. Game 2. I'm able to out attrition his resources. Game 3. He has a grindstone out with 2 welders and a Painter. a City of Traitors and a land. I have a Mystic out. I then Deluge for 3 wiping the board and saving me from being milled. He then Recruiters for another Painter, plays an ancient Tomb (killing the city) and plays the painter. I then waste the land. And I luck out for the win. He had a simian spirit guide in hand. He needed only one more mana to win. I'm then able to kill the painter with jitte and for added win mores, I have a pithing needle on grindstone.
Can't complain too bad about matchups. Only burn and Land still are bad matchups. Everything else is fine. LOL, I lent out 2 Toxic deluges to a friend who finished 23rd. And another friend put one in the board on my suggestion and 6 for 1's Merfolk with it. Wouldn't really change anything in the deck. Like the needle more than Teeg since it's much easier to cast. Took out the gatekeeper since in non-creature matchups it's poo. But Liliana can still put pressure on creatureless decks.
oh and unfortunately Hero of Bladehold didn't make an appearance at Syracuse. I did hardcast Shriekmaw a bunch of times. But no hero. Didn't get a chance at either GP washington or SCG Detroit to cast Hero of Bladehold. She's still gonna stay in the deck for sure.
Congrats on the finish! Rough that you didn't quite top 8, but at least we are proving that this deck can certainly compete in the current meta. You're still on chrome mox right? Like 3 of them? And multiple Shriekmaws? I just can't bring myself to play the chrome moxes.
2 Chrome Mox
2 Shriekmaw
Still running that. Didn't see Chrome mox that often at Syracuse. Turn 1 Bob that was countered. And I think turn 1 Mystic vs Stompy.
Did see the Shriekmaws. Hardcast both in game 2 vs Merfolk. Lost that game due to True-Name Nemesis. Hardcast it again game 3 to kill a Phantasmal Image. Other than that, he was a 2 mana terror killing Goyfs.
Mox was also helpful vs Painter as it was my only black source in one game.
Yeah most people don't like the Chrome Mox idea. I like it and won't change it up. Having 5 pieces of mana acceleration is great (2 Mox, 3 Shaman).
3-0'd tonight. Beat sneak and show (still haven't lost to it), a junk loam build, and NO Bant. Not too much in the way of interesting outcomes. I boarded 4 Gerards Verdict for the expectation of burn, but it was a pretty miserable turnout. I think I need a 23rd land though and I'm having some difficulty figuring out what to cut. Sorin may get the axe. Either that or the single spirit of the Lab. Maybe though I'll try out a singleton Chrome Mox just for the random explosiveness? I'm not too sure. Phyrexian Revoker continues to over perform. I've been toying with shitty variations (tried out OG deadguy with 4 Sinkhole 4 Vindicate and such and it was terrible), but I think now I will be practicing for SCG ATL next month. I still think this deck is well positioned and I plan on taking it all the way this time.
@Wilkin: List please? I don't see any list by you in the last few pages...
Tried out the 23rd land instead of a third Vindicate and it was alright. 2 Isolated Chapel ftw. I got smashed by UR Landstill because 4x Bolt, 3x Spell Snare, and Grim Lavamancers is tough to beat. Then I beat Maverick, an interesting Urborg/Cabal Coffers brew (saw him hardcast an emrakul R1), then 5 color slivers. So not much of a real meta tonight for whatever reason. I'm still on the fence about whether I should be on the single Sorin or the 4th Lingering Souls though. Sorin started out as a fun 1-of, but has really pulled his own weight.
He's also pretty sick against miracles. They can't CB him easily, he is recurring damage, and they can't drop a jace without worrying you might ultimate sorin and take jace. Hell last night versus maverick I simply clogged up the board and ended up ultimating when he had 2 knights on board before he scooped. 4 mana is kinda meh, but I usually don't have to much of an issue. And yeah, he combines very well with souls tokens.
Went 2-1-1 last night, beating a bad Storm deck and Sneak and Show, losing to Reanimator/Show and Tell, and drawing (nearly losing) to BUG Shardless.
I think it is time to rework my sideboard, as BUG is so prevalent and difficult matchup. Here's what I have at the moment:
2 Duress (combo and control)
3 Thalia (combo and midrange)
3 Gaddock Teeg (combo and control)
2 Nihil Spellbomb (requisite graveyard hate)
1 Manriki-Gusari (stoneforge decks)
1 Disfigure (weenies, deathrite, and delver)
2 Zealous Persecution (Elves, Death and Taxes, Maverick, True Name Nemesis)
1 Oblivion Ring (Show and Tell, sometimes vs control)
Any recommendations? Honestly I'm considering cutting the graveyard hate, as Deathrite do a decent job of that and it doesn't hate out opposing Goyfs or opposing Deathrites.
I've found lingering souls to be basically my best card versus BUG. Also Vindicate is a fine card against them as well. Despite Shardless during visions off against me, souls with any piece of equipment had generally been good enough to beat them.
Yeah, maindeck lingering souls is your best threat. For me it's hero since it can't be decayed or killed by one disfigure. I personally wouldn't skimp on graveyard hate. Shaman is OK but him alone isn't good enough IMO. I'd probably rather have a path to exile than a disfigure. How many green sources do u run? 3 teegs is a fair bit. I ran one in board and didn't always have the bayou for him...and shaman post board is less likely to live
I'm already playing 3x Lingering Souls and 2x Hero of Bladehold maindeck.
I have 2 Bayou, 1 Savannah, and a basic Forest maindeck, along with plenty of fetches.
Why Path over Disfigure? Also, I only play 3 Abrupt Decay MD, so if there were a good reason to ditch Disfigure, it could become the 4th Abrupt Decay.
I think Liliana stays in after Game 1 vs non-Ancestral Visions BUG. I highly doubt that it stays in vs Shardless BUG.
I'm thinking about boarding in Thalia vs Shardless BUG. They play so many more non-creatures that I think it might havesome value. On the flip side, I greatly dislike having Lingering Souls cost 4 with flashback of 3.
I like path since it kills more targets. As for Thalia...I dunno. They do have quite a few spells but golgari charm is gonna go in for sure against us. OK, that should be enough green for teeg.
What is everyone's thoughts on boarding against stone forge decks? I'm always torn on if I should keep in hymn. Usually I bring in both of my disenchants. I usually leave in thoughtseize, especially on the draw.
Depends on how much you have to board in?
I think that discard is fine if you don't have much to swap; with a favoring of targeted over hymn (if those are your choices.) It means you can't hit stupid cards unless it's the only card in their hand (Loam, Souls, WLL/Smiter/Baloth/Bloodghast/other jank), it gives information on how to play out your match, and it acts as pretend removal or as a way to save one of your guys (depending on how threat heavy each of your hands are.)
Hymn also eats up a T2 slot where you need to be developing your board. Targeted Discard rarely results in tempo-loss because it's just 1-mana, doing it next to a Dark Confidant play can protect him where Hymn makes you choose (slowing down a potential card draw.)
Between the information and tempo differences I think it's quite helpful. The CA could come up, but if they land a Confidant or SFM they just gained CA anyway meaning you could've just discarded that instead of playing catch up. It's worth noting that the primary SFM decks are attempting to mana-screw you, making double-black potentially difficult.
Thats a good thought process. I am generally wanting to bring in 2x Disenchant, maybe my single EE I am trying out, and ZP's depending on what I saw in the first game. If they are a blue SFM deck with TNN I definitely want the ZPs. Otherwise vs. Junk decks if I saw souls and/or Bob I usually bring them in, as well as vs Maverick or DnT, but vs like Goyf decks it generally hasn't been as good.
This player has another top in a 55-person tournament with the slightly greener not-quite-Rock deck:

I am thinking about testing this version because it has done very well. I think Abrupt Decay matters more than we have traditionally thought. It also allows me to test an idea I've had: Kitchen Finks. It would shore up our burn matchup, give us a little bit more beef, and can be cast off a Bayou. Looking at the list above, would test it over Oblivion Ring and Elspeth.
I understand that STP and Terminus are in the format but there are very few creatures in our colors that are immune to those cards. And running 4x Liliana, 4x Souls, and 3x Decay will give Miracles a lot to think about anyway.
Hey guys,
I have been reading this forum for years now, so i thought it was time to contribute.
I'm a deadguy player, do not have much tournament experience (only played around 10 small tournaments i suppose, one top 4 finish and once top 20 at a 120+ tournament) but i love this deck a lot.
Against stoneblade decks i love te targeted discard, even post board. Especially thoughtseize has been huge for me. Wait till they drop their stoneforge to get an equipment (prev. batterskull) and discard it out of their hand leaves them with a squire in play. Playing this way ensures that batterskull will not hit play later, this has won me some games versus other stoneblade decks. For me this matchup often comes down to who has the equipment. Maybe with True name nemesis this changes somewhat, however this line of play is still possible since they are only at two mana.
