A quick question to some, in what match ups do you actually side out Iona and retainers, as I usually don't side them out at all? Care to elaborate which match ups they don't work against and why?

Usually the blue MUs, cause getting your Retainers countered seems weak compared to the VV-plan, also with Jace seeing more and more play setting Iona on the removal color just doesn't cut it IMO.
has anyone got a good list of a deck? I am currently in the gbw category and am dropping black for the ever more popular build. rec sur has died a long time ago :(
I've startet with 1 Bog, 1 Faerie and 3 Crypts in the SB and I've cut down the Crypts 1 by 1, without losing a Match vs. Ichorid, even the scrub guy, I lenbd my deck, on sat and sun won his 1st match and played draw in the other.
Faerie is far better in any SotF Mirror and vs. cards like Loam, cuz its simply "invisible" and you have multiple ways to tutor it, the same is true for Bog, boath Cards are slower, but much more flexible and by far harder to handle.
Well, I'm playing that Pile in different versions for ~10 month now and I guess i can tell, that GW Sur doesn't care much bout GY hate.
Its only a loss of tempo, if you have Shaman, or SotF, you can simply Tutor up a Pridemage or lure them with one "Combo" and resolve the other. If you don't have any SotF/Shamans you simply don't care, cuz their hate is just a one-shot-weapon most of the times and you can recover quickly.
The only Hate I'm relly afraid of ist Perish, a resolved Perish is deadly no matter if you're playing vs. Tempo Faeries, Goblins or Fish.
You should read my posts more carefuyl... ;)Quote:
Another thing GW has to obviously prepare for is UG Madness. This means:
- One thing I learned from the Top8 coverage is that Ethersworn canonist doesn't lock YOU out of triggering Vengevines. Just play more Canonists in the Side and you are fine because of its own Artifact status. I actually feel kinda stupid because it is so obvious and yet I advocated lists with exactly 1 Canonist in the SB. So if you play Canonist, play at least 2.
Well, I've never thought about that MU, since none in NRW is playing UG, so I think, I will ignore until people start to play it.Quote:
- We need a SB plan against UG Madness. What is the most efficient and reliable way to attack them? Graveyard hate, Enchantment hate, Canonists, Mindcensors? What do we take out? To me it seems that as long as GW can stop Wonder and Survival into more than 2 Vengevines GW is ahead. The Mongrel + Rootwalla + 1 Free Turbo Vengevine offense is usually controlable with Mother of Runes, Swords, Goyf and KotR.
Just by the way:
I had a freaky dream a few days ago.
I dreamed, that i played a large tourney aywhere in the BeNeLux and the guy I had beaten a few seconds ago started to cry, how he could have lost to such a crap pile.
I listend to him for a few seconds an answerd "losing vs. GW Sur is like anal sex, it hurts for the first time, but you get used to it"...
You kind of contradict yourself here when saying that Faerie is better in the mirror and then you state that GW Survi doesnīt care much about GY hate (to which I would agree) - so that argument towards Faerie/Bog seems rather poor to me. Furthermore, a good Loam/ Lands player will beware running right into a Faerie, Bog or Trap since itīs obv that in game 2 people will start bringing GY hate against them, so I donīt see any advantage here also. Crypt is still faster and would at least hit all other cards if opponent cycle/dredges in response to save Loam (compared to Faerie).
Also, saying that some random guy won a game against Dredge and drew another, does not say anything at all about the relevance of Crypt vs. other hate cards. Sorry, but this is rather poor argumentation imo.
Anyway, it was nice to see whose behind your nickname! And would Iīve known in Iserlohn that it was you, it would have been nice being able to talk in real life about "our" deck (though I played Jace Control in Iserlohn that day)! Maybe we can make up for that at GP Bochum Legacy Sideevent... ;)
FM is hard to compare to Crypt, I use FM as a tempo card, especially in the mirror, where you can "counter" boath combos by spending just 1 green Mana,(as long as the opponet plays only 3 VV, he gets a VV, a Rootwalla and a Mother/Hierarch, scary) and resolve your own "Combo".
Thats true fory any kind of hate, except for Extirpate, but you can use FM as a combat trick or as a tempo card again, to handle single threats, like Loam, Chasm or any kind resurrsion, or to slow them at least.
I think that it depends to the meta expectations, wich hate you want to play, having Bog and FM uses only 2 sb-slots and gives you flexible solutions, wich can be searched by multiple cards, even if they are a lot slower than Crypts/Traps.
Well it is, but it shows that even scrubs can win with GW Sur... ;)
I'll be there, its 15 min from my ex-gfs flat.... ;)
Here are two deck lists for discussion, both of them made top8 two weeks ago in a 300 person tournament here in Spain. Pity is, that the whole top8 drew so we don't know how it would've played out. It would've been interesting with two TES players up there as well.
Any how on to the lists

I don't like the first list as I believe, that there is no need for main decking NOPro. Even though I play an enlightened tutor SB as well I don't like this particular one.
The second one looks like a Meverick hybrid thingy to me which can combo as well.
I for myself prefer the 8 Survival + Iona approach as I believe it complements our strategy very well. I also like the Shamans post board, especially when people bring in enchanment hate or in case they play Pithing Needle.
What changes could we make to anticipate the hate people will start to pack?
I don't like the first list as well, as I dont see natural order good for a gw version, with no disruption. The 3rd list seems good. No iona retainers, but its ok.
In all honesty I think an transformational sideboard could do the job well, if people start preparing for vengvines very well, we don't have to force it. Maybe we could go more of control post board. or as tao said, bring in elspeth or the likes. As people bring in more gravehate and survival hate, kotr, iona retainers would be more useless. although kotr still does fetch the land we need. Vengvines are easy to hard cast, hence they don't really rely on the yard. But if we can find a good transformational sideboard I think it would do very well against all the graveyard and enchantment hate people would bring in.
I don't think that reason makes as much sense in practice as it does in theory. The deck has 2 drops people generally want to stop, and three drops, and by the time I am dropping a NO saccing a noble/finks/whatever the coast is often clear. I have not played in any tournies lately, but posted about NO/pro in this thread a few months back.
The first deck just wins by dropping bomb after bomb hoping they cant counter all. And afcourse casting vengevines is pretty good vs counterspells.
I do like the 2nd deck more fitting my playstyle.
OK... I will slap on a tourney report while I still remember it. I just came back on a 114 person tourney with 7 rounds. I took 3rd with a record of 6-1 in swiss. with a total record of 7-2 .
My build is very similar but I opted for a black splash. I was playing the black splash with aether vials for a long time and took top 8th 2nd 1st and 3rd on 4 consecutive tournaments. I am also more of an aggro control player hence the black splash.
But this time I saw the power vengevine brings to the table and decided to drop the vials, as they are no longer needed because vengvine gave the much needed power against control. This is my first time to pilot the survival with no aether vials, and was very impressed by the results.

Round 1 vs Dragon stompy
G1 :he wins the roll
1st turn chalice for 1. 2nd turn magus of the moon.I manage to bring him down to 1 but lost. I end up with 1 basic land trying to push through with survival. 0-1
G2: I play
I play 1st turn noble and proceed to beat down with Kotr. 1-1
G3: He plays
Plays 1st turn trinisphere, and then ratchet bomb, which led to rakdos and koth. while me just getting to my 3rd mana. 1-2
Total 0-1
Round 2 Counter Thopter
G1(play): I mull to 6 but still managed to win via vengvine under humility. 4 1/1s beating each turn hurts(this includes a goyf) 1-0
SideIN all artifact removal,3 extirpate.Extirpate was for recurring EE. or sword of the meek. Side OUT: Creature removal
G2(draw): I win with aura of silence making everything cast 2 more. He couldn't keep up with goyfs. 2-0
Total 1-1
Round 3 Bwg rOckish build but with land destruction
G1(play): he mulls to 6, I manage to drop a mother and a goyf. then it beats down for the win. 1-0
Side IN: Nothing, I have no idea what to bring in. .
G2: He tries to destroy my lands, but I keep on top decking lands, then I drop mindcensors which actually disrupt his land development.2-0
Total:2-1
Round 4 vs BW painter
G1(play): loss, painter grind stone with a few discard to disrupt me 0-1
Sude IN: krosan grips and artifact removal, I also bring in path to exile just to help with painters servant incase.Side OUT: Forgot.
G2: I win via mulligan and wasteland, then drop fauna shaman, getting pridemages. shamans were protected by mother of runes.1-1
G3: Win via mind censor when he tried to fetch ,then drop a reliquary to proceed destroying most of his lands. 2-1
Total: 3-1
Round 5 Berserk stompy
G1(play): win via swords to plowshare
Side IN: Peace keeper ,path to exiles and cannonists. Side OUT: Vengevines, rootwalla and maybe others. I don't plan on racing him.
G2: Win via peacekeeper eventually stalling enough for the kill with 3x mother of runes and 2 10/10 kotrs. He had winter orb on, eventually but I just waited for land drops and tried to get rangers and knights as fast so that I can get to use as much mana as I can.
Total 4-1
Round 6 Goblin Mono Red
G1(Draw): 1st turn lackey gets stp'd. Drops another lackey second turn. I drop a fauna and proceed to win from there with iona on red.
G2: Win via Iona
Total 5-1
Round 7 Vs UG vengvine (I couldnt ID because I was around number 7 and giving him a draw would only take me out of top 8)
G1(play): I have a good hand. I Noble, he dazes. He drops nothign. I drop mother. She resolves. I drop fauna shaman and proceed to win. With mother and scryb ranger. giving double protection to my creatures.
G2: I stall the ground with cannonist , peacekeeper and avenmindcensor. And just went for time.
total 7-1
--------------
Top 8
Round 1 Merfolk
G1(play): HE mulls to 6.I win via beatdown and Kotr wastland on his dual.
G2: He FOrces scryb ranger, as I had a mother of runes already in play. I drop survival and win with iona on black. She was already protected by mother hence submerge or any form of blue creature kill is easier to fend off then to see all my green creatures go bye bye. Not sure if that was right however. ( He has shreikmaws in the side board along with perish)
Round 2 Ug survival ( he was a very good and experienced player, maybe not as a survival player but generally speaking)
G1(Play): I drop a mother, then noble. He counters something. He has noble and wild mongrel. I had a shreikmaw in hand. I was deciding on which to kill. I made a mistake of killing wild mongrel. I actually forgot that Mongrel has the ability to change color. SHriekmaw was dead. Never drew a survival after that. He drops jace and bounces mother. I protect it. He drops g.cradle and starts the vengevine crazyness, and proceed with 18 damage. I never draw into survival or fauna.
Side IN: Peacekeeper, 3 extirpates, 1 faeri,2 krosan grip,2 cannonists Side OUT: Vengevines rootwalla and 1of each creature I could think of.I think it was 1 goyf, shredder , Knight a single or maybe 2 shamans. Maybe I was wrong in siding out the shamans.
G2: I drop mother, then goyf. He drops survival. I drop Aven mindcensor when he tries to survival. He gets a creature. This proceeds for a long time with me damaging him with a 3/2 aven with exalted. He keeps on survivaling in to good creatures even with mindcensor in play.He also fetches to a tropical even with an aven mindcensor. He gets a wonder via survival (with mindcensor) casts it along with a goyf to get 2 vengvines in play. I stop attacking since I cannot risk wonder getting killed. I can't give his creatures flying. He draws a cradle casts jitte and equips on wonder. It attacks. IM forced to block and protect mindcensor with mother. Wonder dies. He passes the turn. I still havent drawn into survival or at least a fauna shaman. It make it seem like I was playing a gW beatdown. I draw into extirpate. I had to extirpate wonder since he had around 1 goyf and 2 vengevines in play. Now that I think of it, I have made a play big mistake, and I only realized it now while typing this report. I should have made him declare his attackers first, then I extirpate wonder and block both the vengevines as I had 2 goyfs which were 4/5 .Anyway it was a bad mistake. I extirpate his wonder right away and pass the turn, I felt the urgency to use it, my hate for wonder took over me. Anyway, I go back to beatdown with aven mindcensor until he is doawwn to 2. I don't dr into survivals till he gets a wild mongrel via survival even with a mindcensor. He plays the mongrel, equips it with jitte. I finally get a survival,I finally get survival. I discard loyal retainers to get another mother I drop the mother so that if he does kill mindcensor and my active mother with jitte, I could still protect a goyf later on to push through. He attacks with mongrel. He opts to kill both mother of runes. Leaving a flying mindcensor. Mongrel is dead. He survivals and gets the single meloku he had in his top 4 cards. With G. cradl he makes around 7 flying tokens. I draw into a land. He attacks with his tokens and a jiite. He kills mindcensor and noble. I am at a loss. I draw into a creature, discard for peacekeeper. He steals peacekeeper with drake. I have a new active mother and a scryb ranger and a gilded drake. But he has peacekeeper. I get swarmed with everything around 12-14 creatures for the alpha strike.
I made a crucial mistake of extirpating on my turn when I could have killed both his vines and maybe won from then on. Sometimes even though we feel the urgency to do something we have to calm down and think what else we can do to make the best out of each spell. Hate for a card leads to dumb play errors. I also was scared of gilded drake stealing my mother when I could have actually pushed through with goyfs via protection early. And I should remember that I had a mindcensor and the possibility of him drawing drake that was 3 of was really slim (with one being in the yard). But props to his magic hands where he draw a land and never missed a creature via survival even with aven mindcensor in play.
So there a total of 7-2
with 14 wins and 4 losses
My team mate and the guy split the prize for 1st. which was a mox jet and some other stuff.
top 8 was

Mono black somthing, I had no idea.I think it was dark depths
Props:
God by blessing me the whole tournament.
Everyone was friendly
Black is a good splash which gives me good sideboard cards.
Learning while writing a tourney report.
Slops:
Me !!! I am still making mistakes and big ones .. Like totally forgetting that Mongrel can change its color. Extirpate on urgency (wonder) which led me not to use it the best way which was very very crucial. Probably made a few small mistakes somewhere but was not crucial. Forgetting to pay for an upkeep cost because of soo many creatures on the table.
Slops on the place being too crowded to host the 100 + person event
Things I would change in the deck:
Aven mindcensor has its uses since it seemed the metagame was flooded with vengevine madness, but I am still unsure of him(he replaced a single stoneforge and a single jitte). Mindcensor however won me games that jitte or stoneforge might have not. Along with the mindcensors evasion, he was a decent beater but might not actually be necessary.
I still miss squee at times. Having squee in the semis when I had survival could have won me the game since I could have tutored for shreikmaw with squee (to kill peacekeeper which he stole) and tutored for ranger with the other creature I drew. Giving my goyf pro blue and pro green to push through. However he might still not be necessary. Since the losses in that game were due to him being a very good player and having fantastic survivals even with mindcensor.
I will probably test the same deck list in a smaller tourney again sometime soon. If i was going to change something, it might be the mindcensors from the main deck. I might go for something with evasion and protection, or something that disrupts. But until I find a worthy candidate it seems that Mindcensors have everything right now and will stay in for a while as long as the meta is filled with madness.
Hey, congratulations. I somehow missed your report, and yes, splashing black for Extirpate might be an option if the Metagame gets infested with all UG Madness. I think that attacking their Yard has the best chances to win, be it via Crypt /Faerie Macabre or via Extirpate. Without Vengevines they don't do much and Wonder is a big danger.
They updated the Iserlohn lists and since there is no more deckcheck I post them here:

While I was playing a lot of Magic in the beginning of the year (and yes, quite succesful GW Survival  ), I had sort of a break the last months. Last week I thought Iīll play my favourite deck again, although Iīm lacking practice and there were quite some changes in the list with Vengevine and Fauna Shaman (which for me is clearly the way to go, after testing, although I wasnīt sold on him in theory). I managed to start 2-0 against Imperial Painter and Ooze Survival Combo without dropping a single game and lost the next round to UB merfolk thanks to a horrible misplay -as I said, I am lacking practice. After that I lost concentration and motivation ending mediocre, which normally would have been a 4-1 or maybe even 5-0 record. To share my newest thoughts or just stating the obvious:
Maindeck:
-Lately I have seen some lists without Gaeaīs Cradle which is absolutely not understandable. This card is almost always a mana boost and not a dead card and was involved in a turn 4 kill with vengevines in my tourney. Play it!
-Eternal Witness: I donīt like her as a creature but the main reason to play her is to trigger VV again "all on her own", recurring another creature. I would have won the game against Merfolk despite the play mistake if I would have played a Witness. Just a point to remember.
-Gaddock Teeg: while I still love this little guy maindeck - just because you have a tiny chance to win vs. TES and such preboard - I can see, why some pilots are cutting him. This deck gained so much speed and pressure from VV that he isnīt needed in some matchups where he used to be good.
Sideboard:
-Aven Mindscensor: I think in the current meta you HAVE to play min. 1 copy of him in your SB. He is THAT good. Enough said.
-Ethersworn Canonist: As Tao pointed out lately, play 2 of him in your SB.
More results to come, as I will play the deck more frequently in the future again.
I personally play an Enlightened Tutor SB, but was wondering if anyone is playing Natural Order?
Also what would be a good SB cards against Survival Elves, which is also good in other matchups?
Well for survival elves, Aven mindcensor works for both their survival and natural order. So it might work for you that way. Just try to go for a quick iona on green. However I am not sure as I have no experience whatsoever against survival elves.
I have never played natural order with green white and have no idea if it works or if it doesn't. One thing I think you'll have to do if you are planning to add natural orders and/or equipment toolbox is that you would have to add around 2 birds of paradise to make sure you reach the mana requirement.
Independently of the Natural Orders, I noticed whenever I started with 1st turn Hierarch my win % went up dramatically. Currently I play 1 Bird and 4 Hierarch and would like to play even more Birds unfortunatly the deck is very thight. I could cut one Teeg (I play him maindeck to free up SB space) for a Bird or Witness, but what really concerns me at the moment is my SB.
This is what I'm testing right now:
SB: 1 Gaddock Teeg
SB: 1 Faerie Macabre
SB: 1 Ethersworn Canonist
SB: 3 Path to Exile
SB: 1 Bojuka Bog
SB: 2 Krosan Grip
SB: 1 Aven Mindcensor
SB: 2 Enlightned Tutor
SB: 1 Umezawa's Jitte
SB: 1 Ghostly Prison
SB: 1 Aura of Silence
I have found the equipment toolbox to be a bit slow for my taste, so instead I am testing Elspeth and more redundant beaters, kind of like the current "Big Zoo" decks. So far the results are fantastic. I will have a decklist and tournament report after this weekend.
Your best shot against Survival Elves is Iona on green, as they usually have no answer to it. If you don't use Iona/Retainers, Stoneforge Mystic fetching a Jitte does the job if you can play it early. Genesis and Spore Frog are also good stallers, but unless you run some flyer/evasive beater or Jitte, the game will probably end in a draw - or Elves will cast Emrakul and win from there.
