Re: [Deck] Death and Taxes
I'm probably most excited about Imperial Taxes. With DTT gone, it should be back, stronger than ever since it doesn't have to deal with horseshit Delve CA spells anymore.
I'm still figuring out what the creature base should look like, though. Currently, I have the following list in mind which should be pretty much what Bahra played:
4 Flooded Strand
3 Windswept Heath
3 Plains
2 Plateau
2 Karakas
4 Rishadan Port
4 Wasteland
1 Cavern of Souls
4 Mother of Runes
4 Stoneforge Mystic
4 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
3 Phyrexian Revoker
4 Flickerwisp
3 Imperial Recruiter
2 Magus of the Moon
1 Mirran Crusader
1 Fiend Hunter
4 Swords to Plowshares
4 AEther Vial
1 Umezawa's Jitte
1 Sword of Fire and Ice
1 Batterskull
Sideboard:
3 Ethersworn Canonist
3 Rest in Peace
1 Ratchet Bomb
2 Council's Judgment
3 Sudden Demise
1 Leonin Relic-Warder
1 Pithing Needle
1 Flex slot
Not sure if 3 Karakas are required in the new meta if Sneaky Show makes a comeback. 3 Revokers might be sufficient with 3 Recruiters as tutors, although having another (tutorable) flyer would be nice.
Magus should be pretty good if Shardless BUG comes back, but then again, he's a Grey Ogre that fucks over our manabase in quite a few match-ups. I might consider running a 1/2 split between MD/SB since he's still a force a reckon with in quite a few match-ups. That would also open up another MD slot for an utility creature, like a flyer or Relic-Warder.
I also found the suggestion of Guardian of the Guildpact as tutorable pseudo-TNN in the Salvation intriguing, although I'm not a fan of the 4cc required and slots are premium.
Re: [Deck] Death and Taxes
I have been running that list with a Wingmare instead of Fiend Hunter and more Caverns, and a slightly different sb.
Every time I test with Fiend Hunter main it ends up really disappointing. I want it to be good because a tutorable removal spell is definitely something the deck wants - but creature decks are usually also removal decks and the 1/3 body is really such a non-threat. Like Recruiter into Hunter is a way to get rid of something in a pinch, but it's also spending a lot of resources to end up with a 1/1 and a 1/3. And because we don't have the same clock as mono-W, they'll have time to get rid of the Hunter, which ends up being a pretty big blowout.
Re: [Deck] Death and Taxes
Wingmare would work as a tutorable flyer with added utility, but I never got the chance to test it.
Has anybody tested Adaptive Automaton as Recruiter target? Set on humans, it pumps a good chunk of our team, including Recruiters. Probably just the danger of cool things, though.
Re: [Deck] Death and Taxes
@Barook
Do you like the 7 fetch lands with only 5 fetchable lands? I'm not the best with calculating these things, but I tend to try and go 1 to 1.
Why 3 Recruiter and 2 Magus?
Maybe Adaptive Automaton is better than Wilt-Leaf Liege, but maybe not. Obviously, Liege is not good with Recruiter, but it is value with Liliana and Hymn to Tourach, and it is a hero in the mirror match.
@iatee
Also not huge on Fiend Hunter and Leonin Relic-Warder with the decks that are coming back, since they will pack a lot of removal.
Re: [Deck] Death and Taxes
7 fetches and 5 targets is fine. You almost never run out of fetch targets, and it's usually not a big deal if it does happen, since if you've got 5 lands on top of some number of your 11 other lands, another land doesn't do much anyway. Delver usually plays 8 fetches 6 targets. The added flexibility of getting to choose whether it's a basic or a red source is too important to pass up just because you're afraid that your 8th land drop won't be as good.

Why 3 Recruiter and 2 Magus?
More fetches to fetch basics for Wasteland and Magus. Simple as that. Can't really say that I dislike it so far.
As for Recruiters/Magus, I like Recruiters, but I'm not very fond of Magus, but I see him as a necessary evil due to the bomb status he has. As I said above, I might consider cutting down 1 MD Magus and run 2 in the sideboard which gives me virtually 6 copies after boarding in the match-ups where he really shines.

It's been necessary vs Omni and can be a blowout against a lot of random decks like enchantress, MUD, fish. Marginally better than Revoker vs. Stoneblade decks and worse vs Miracles. Deals with a lot of random sideboard hate.

If you care about the clock part that much, why not Banisher Priest instead? It has the new wording, though, so no Flickerwish shenanigans.
Re: [Deck] Death and Taxes
I wouldn't be too quick to take out the anti enchantment hatebears - people are playing a lot more DnT hate usually in Sulfur Elemental and Dread of Night. Now that DnT is likely to become Tier 1 again, especially R/W, I don't see those cards being played less unfortunately.
I played a game against what was apparently Joe Losset's current miracles list last week that had 1x Sulfur Elemental and 2x Izzet Staticaster in the board... and he managed to get all three out. To the shock of absolutely no one I didn't win that game, although Sudden Demise was a very live draw. The perks of not playing brainstorm
I should also point out that both Batterskull and SoFaI were both blown up thanks to Wear/Tear on the Sword and then Snapcaster'd back when I went for the desperation "hard-cast batterskull" move.
Fiend Hunter and Relic Warder are both tutorable answers to get us out of these sticky spots. Just something to keep in mind.
The Duergar-Hedge Mage experiment didn't go well. Would not recommend.
Re: [Deck] Death and Taxes
@iatee
I like Leonin Relic-Warder and I was playing it since Wingmare came out, but given what we are walking into, I think I prefer two Council's Judgment, despite its limits, because we will be going into a very volatile meta.
Re: [Deck] Death and Taxes
Sacrificing 2 slots for tutorable answers in our 75 is worth it due to the flexibility and consistency it grants. Just my 2 cents.

I haven't tried it yet but I have a sense that it would be generally better. It can't profitably block / attack past 2/1s (snap/bob/pyro/thalia) but can't be held at bay by a 1/2 (drs, sfm) - and the difference between 1 and 2 power on board is quite significant when you're trying to apply pressure and have a deck with 11 other 1 power creatures. Flickerwisp shenanigans are fun but are gonna happen so infrequently (you need your one of, a flickerwisp, a vial on 3, 1WW, neither card in play yet, and at least one target but ideally two) that I think they shouldn't be given too much credit when comparing the two cards.

Yep, just like the e-tutor package means you have a multiplier for your sb artifacts/enchantments, 3 Recruiters really rewards you for putting more one-of creatures in your sb.
More expensive spells are also harder to justify if you're playing Wingmare(s). Judgment can end up being a 3WW spell now.
Re: [Deck] Death and Taxes
Scab-Clan Berserker could also be a nice option as a 1-of SB material.
RR is not easy to achieve but in the MU you want him in, it should not be a problem (human as well).
Re: [Deck] Death and Taxes
Yeah that's definitely worth testing. It seems like it might be a turn too slow to beat a lot of combo decks on its own, but thalia or ethersworn into that would be very strong. And it survives massacre.
Re: [Deck] Death and Taxes
Hopefully this is in the correct section! I'm considering splashing red for GP Seattle. I'd be playing Recruiter, Magus of the Moon and Sudden Demise. You guys think this is any good? Seems fun!

Re: [Deck] Death and Taxes
There should be much more greed-midrange in the format now (BUG Delver, Esper Deathblade, Shardless, Jund etc), which means Magus of the Moon should be pretty good entering the new format.
Re: [Deck] Death and Taxes
I wonder if Phyrexian Metamorph could be a viable Recruiter target. The 4cc obviously sucks for Vial, but being able to copy both creatures and artifacts sounds quite flexible, especially if you add in Flickerwisp shenanigans.

Does it fit the gameplay DnT has? I'm no expert on the deck but what would you copy? Can't copy Thalia, Wingmare? A Goyf? Emrakul?!?
