copy the wrong thing and that Phantasmal Image is near useless, as you can't make it a target of spell or ability, even if it is the bearer of the ability. Be very careful to not target it.

Hi, New legacy player here. Had a couple of merfolk questions if anyone can help me out. What are the decks problem matches? Do the current lists play uw or ub mainstream? and what is generally the number of non basics the deck needs to play? Sorry for the newbie questions, just trying to catch my bearings here.
Merfolk has problems with everything that doesn't have an Island. Namely: Zoo, Goblins, GW Maverick, BGW Junk, etc...
This deck's strenght is Islandwalk and AEther Vial, and it's weakness is lack of removal. If your meta is Combo/BUG/Bant/CounterTop, this deck should do it's finest. If not, expect some lousy beatings ):
Ub seems to be the most useful splash nowdays, because of Perish and Extirpate. Don't know if that's really true, because I play monoU.
I also run Mono-Blue for the mana base; but Surgical Extraction is in my SB so I guess that would mean that there is a small splash of Black in my deck.
I run 4 Mutavaults and 4 Wastelands as my only Non-basic lands; but some guys also play a single Mishra's factory. If your splashing colour in your mana base though, then you will probably also want some Fetchlands. Although I personnally prefer to stick to blue casts so that the mana base does not get too diluted.
Problem matches are as Vandalize mentioned; but even those are not un-winable if you get a decent hand and draw to go with it. And if you check the recent standings (3 months or so) Merfolk are still quite viable.
Good luck with your deck and I do hope that I helped you a little.
Could you please elaborate on this one?
Im trying hard, but I can think of only one application where a targeted effect is used by "the bearer of the ability". That would be untapping with it's own trigger when the image is copying a Rejeerey.
Other beneficial targeted abilities in the Merfolk-Deck are Merfolk Sovereign and Jitte. That is pretty much it...
Sure, copy something like your opponents Grim Lavamancer and see how well it works without the R mana source, or after it get blasted for damage.
Wild Ncatle is another crappy card to copy as you probably won't get any pump from lands onboard; and you can't always wait until the land a Goyf to copy as the race could well be over by then.
Anyway, I didn't particularly mean that you would kill your own Image; but you don't always get your own creatures to copy, and some enemy creatures are junk on your side of the table. Sorry if my earlier post was misleading; but those self targeting creature do also exist, such as Mother of Runes.
Cheers.
Well, I played Merfolk in a tournament this monday and I did a terrible 2-4. I won against Canadian and Pox. I lost against 2 mavericks, 1 Zoo and 1 MonoW Rebels.
I think it's not a good time to play merfolk... I mean, those Mavericks and Zoo's are near imposible to win. Even after sideboarding Submerges and other stuff, I lost anyway without any chance to do anything.
What do u people think about Merfolk's actual position? Is a good deck to use right now?
PD. Are 2 Spell pierces worth MD? Or should I put stifles in those slots? I think Standstill is not much viable right now, is it?
what do you guys think of Skaab Ruinator?
H'es a beast. and can be vialed in.
Yes, it's a beast, but I think it doesn't fit well in the deck. He's not a Merfolk, he costs 3 (an double U), if you want to cast it, you have to remove fish from your graveyard or change vial from 2 to 3 counters. In my opinion, so many things for only a 5/6 flyer without protection. I think it's not worth.
After having good/great success with merfolk in tournaments, I changed the deck for yesterday's "Tournament of the Cities" (60 people) because, well, it is not a good deck at the moment. I had a "privilege" of watching my friends, which stayed true to the choice, battling at last 2 tables. I was not pleased to watch that.
Since blue Nacatl and blue Bloodbraid Elf got printed, duo that we don't use, fish got into polluted water (even without black splash). I can't think of a card that could help us in Inn block, there won't be any new merfolk for at least a year. So sad.
with all of the stoneblade running around, what do you guys think about maindecking a Thada Adel, Acquisitor or 2 or maybe even 3?? afterall, you can vial her into play at their eot... then swing next turn and play around with their sword equipment... even if you dont play their equipment... u still end up exiling their extra equipment.
Just piloted Merfolk to Top 4 at MTG Deals Tournament (31 people). Was pretty stoked because I didn't drop a game and this was my first prize!
Here's my deck for reference:
4 Wasteland
4 Mutavault
13 Island
4 Merrow Reejerey
4 Coralhelm Commander
4 Lord of Atlantis
4 Silvergill Adept
4 Cursecatcher
4 Force of Will
3 Daze
2 Dismember
4 AEther Vial
2 Kira, Great Glass-Spinner
2 Phantasmal Image
2 Spell Pierce
SB: 2 Dismember
SB: 2 Spell Pierce
SB: 3 Surgical Extraction
SB: 2 Relic of Progenitus
SB: 3 Submerge
SB: 2 Cursed Totem
SB: 1 Daze
Round 1: Tempo RUG 2-0
Game 1 was really won off the back of Silvergill Adept and Coralhelm Commander picked up the slack after he landed a goyf. Game 2, he got double wasted and Lord of Atlantis went a far way.
Round 2: Aggro Loam 2-0
This match is usually pretty bad for Merfolk, but game 1 I didn't lose a single life and Kira really helped protect my dudes. Game 2, some timely land screw, forces, and a Surgical Extraction on Pyroblast helped me win with a Lord of Atlantis near the end.
Round 3: Reanimator 2-0
I was actually really afraid of this matchup because Reanimator is a beast. Game 1 was the closest game I played all tournament, with him pulling off an Animate Dead on Iona. However, he let me have a Lord of Atlantis before he resolved the Animate Dead, and LoA and Mutavault went all the way. The second game, I comfortably won as Coralhelm Commander took huge chunks of his life leveled up.
I was one of the only 2 3-0's, so I got to draw twice into the top 8, being seeded 3rd.
Top 8: Reanimator 2-0
I played against the same reanimator deck. Game 1 basically involved me keeping him off mana with wasteland and killing him with the lethal silvergill and coralhelm combo. Game 2 was actually a very tense game, with two timely forces swinging things my way and 3 Mutavault + Relic of Progenitus shutting out the game effectively. A cursecatcher really helped slow down his game plan.
Then in the top 4, I was slated to play Hive Mind, but we decided to split in the top 4, and I picked up a tundra and 45 dollars in cash. Not bad for my first top 8!
Thoughts:
- Coralhelm is sick. I had some doubts going into to this tournament, but when he gets to level up, he's nigh unbeatable.
- I didn't get to cast the spell pierces all day, but in that top 8 match, holding a spell pierce in my hand really made me feel like I was in control, despite being one reanimate spell away from death.
- Reanimator for that matter feels like a not so bad match up. Of course, there's always the "Oops, I win turn 2," but when they don't get the nuts, wastelands go a long way.
- I got lucky all day not hitting stoneblade. I actually ID'd with the guy that ran stoneblade in round 4.
- Kira should definitely be mainboarded. Kira saves so many butts.
- I actually enjoyed the 3 Daze, 2 Spell Pierce, 2 Dismember suite instead of going 4 Daze, 3 Dismember. It gave me more flexibility.
- I like the graveyard suite as is. It feels very powerful.
- Silvergill Adept and Mutavault were my MVPs.
Merfolk felt very powerful throughout the tournament. I think it's always a viable option and you can just win on good days.
Awesome to see that Merfolk can still have game vs decks that are considered above them.
Congrats on the victory and thanks for sharing.
do you notice anything unusual in this: http://www.thecouncil.es/tcdecks/dec...8&iddeck=53350
