[Deck] UWR Delver

Do you guys bring Meddling Mage in against all opponents? Against BUG Delver for example (with no TNN) I want to cut 4 FoW and 2 daze/spell pierce, bring in lavaman, 2 RiP, and the 4th swords, TNN, and SoFaI. What would you cut for Meddling Mage?

To the person asking about 12 Post, I side out all my removal -4 Bolt -3 STP -1 Jitte and bring in 4 Meddling Mage, 3 REB, 1 SoFaI. The REB is critical because they are running show and tell. I don't save my Dazes because they are so hard to get value out of in a deck that can easily pay the mana. The Jitte is way to underwhelming. First Meddling Mage I almost always name show and tell. second one depends on the board state.

Checking my SB notes, I dont sb in meddling mage against any of the delver decks (BUG,RUG,Esper & UWR). I bring them in against combo and control or when my removal is dead or when I am playing against Pox-type decks.

This is how I usually board vs BUG delver: -4 FoW -4 Spell Pierce (otp) -4 Daze (otd) -1 Umezawa's Jitte +3 REB/Pyroblast +1 Island +1 TNN +2 RiP +2 Grim Lavamanncer

REB is pretty bad against Team America, especially post board and I don't know why you would ever board out jitte against a deck trying to win with creatures.

I disagree with REBs being bad against BUG Delver, sure it only hits their cantrips, counters, delvers and TNNs. Thats somewhere between 15 to 23 post board games so its never a dead card, but the most important thing is getting their TNN, I havent lost a match against it if they dont resolve one.

With regards to boarding out the Jitte I wanted to try sbing the island and the jitte ended up being the final cut and although I have won against BUG with my current plan, I think you are right and I shouldnt be boarding out Jitte.

What u guys think about cutting 2 spell snares from the Main for 1 Grim Lavamancer and a second Gitaxian Probe ( I play one over 4th swords)?

Most Team America players play stalker over true-name and even so your own true names are better than theirs due to equipment. Meddling Mage on abrupt is really good against them.

Jay, can you please explain how you sideboard vs team america

I play TA not, URW so I don't actually have a list but going from the SB strategy above I'd just bring in Mages over REBs.

I played a couple of 2mans and 8 mans on modo. Faced 2 bug delvers, won against both. I have to say meddling mage naming abrupt decay worked. Forced opp to have disfigure.

This is how I boarded -4 fow -4 spell pierce/daze +1 tnn +2 rip +2 grim lavamancer +1 island +2 meddling mage

Must be a modo thing but seems like every bug delver has tnn instead of stalker.

Inspired by this list http://sales.starcitygames.com//deck...p?DeckID=63446 I've been testing 03 gitaxian probe main, and I must say that I'm VERY impressed.

I've always thought about testing probe, as it performs very well on RUG delver, but wasn't quite sure if dropping a swords and pierce was worth it. Apparently, yes it its. Dropping a land was ok, as I was flooding quite a lot on my last two tournaments.

Probe helps you to use your tools properly, avoiding misplays. Maybe I'm just a bad UWR delver player, but knowing my opponent's hand made quite a difference, and the free cantrip aspect is too awesome to ignore. You know those times when you ponder and see not one, but two cards that you want really bad? Well, draw two for the cost of 2 life only. /o/ Seriously, I believe the card is too good to be overlooked, and encourage you guys to test it. If anyone does, please let me know what you think.

@deadtwomtg: How's the 1-of island in the SB been performing? You're using it solely for blood moon purposes or to avoid losing wasteland battles also?

I play 1 Island and 1 Plains main, I like having an option to not be wastelanded/mooned out of the game.
Other reason is that there is no space for a basic in sideboard, for me.

If you know the decklist you can decide whether or not to side out Swords to Plowshares (many lists don't run DR targets).

In: RiP/Meddling Mage/Grafdigger's Cage

Out: Swords to Plowshares/Gitaxian Probe (Daze on the draw)

I keep lightning bolt to bolt my own critter to wipe out his bridge.

Edit: I'm fairly new to the deck though, so someone else may have a better sideboarding option.

Its been great in the quasi-delver mirrors & in blood moon/magus of the moon matchups. Its been really helpful and I havent missed SoFaF, which is the card the Island replaced in my board, most of the time SoFaF was win-more. On the other hand, the island sometimes guarantees that I'll be able to play magic and not just get mana screwed.

I agree with your reasoning. I usually name dread return or cabal therapy with Meddling Mage.

To the guy playing basics - can you post your land configuration? I feel like this deck is too greedy to run basics and with 4 spell pierce, 4 daze, 4 FoW I don't fear blood moon that much. In fact, I even let a blood moon resolve against me when playing a game against sneak and show with a board presence and a hand of FoW and REB.

I played UWR Delver at SCG Baltimore to a 5-4 record. It was my first time playing competitive Magic in a very long time (not since 1999!), so I spent a good deal of energy just trying to play cleanly (not accidentally drawing too many cards, announcing all triggers, etc.). Thankfully most of my opponents were really friendly, so I had fun even when I was losing, and it was much easier to concentrate with smiles across the table than it might have been otherwise. All of my Legacy knowledge is from SCG streams and a handful of sites (mainly this one). I beat Dredge, Junk, two UWR Delvers, and ANT, and lost against UWR Delver, Punishing Jund, Esper Blade, and Death and Taxes. My list was:

My land configuration felt good with fetch, Island being my most common opening if I had either Ponder or Delver in hand. The EE main was good a couple times, but was too slow and mana intensive others. The Clique didn't do a great job attacking hands (either they were holding land or a fistful of similarly powerful spells), however, I liked having an 11th creature. My sideboard worked when I drew it early against Dredge (RIP/Mages/Grafdigger's Cage) and ANT (red blasts/Mages), but obviously wasn't great when I couldn't find it or didn't know what to name with Meddling Mage against Death and Taxes or Esper-blade(I named Supreme Verdict, which was in his hand, but naming Jace would've been better).

I'm going to Somerset this weekend with the same deck plus a few tweaks. I'm thinking I'm going to drop the EE, Clique, and 1 Pierce for 2 Gitaxion Probes and a Snapcaster in the main. The side might look like:

RIP is definitely a more powerful card than Surgical Extraction, but RIP is weaker against decks that run Abrupt Decay, which are a lot of the same decks I would want to board them in against. Surgical Extraction, Meddling Mage, Snapcaster, and Gitaxion Probe seem to synergize well together, and the RIP's acted against my Lavamancers in the Jund matchup. The extra hand peaking from the Probes will allow me to hit with the Surgical Extractions and Meddling Mages better, which will be especially helpful as I learn the format. My Dredge matchup would get worse, but maybe extracting Narcomoeba is good enough?

Does all of this sound reasonable enough? I played 3 mirror matches in 9 rounds, so I woud like some suggestions on how to play that one out. My board changes are mostly there to address this one particular matchup, but seem to maybe give me a boost against other greedy Delver decks. Extracting a wasted dual should shut a lot of these decks off of a color. They are also kind of threat light, so extracting a bolted creature could eliminate a substantial proportion of their win conditions.
