Re: [Official] Bitching About Prices and Reprints Thread
People are using him as a scapegoat when in reality he is just a symptom of the real problem. Just look at how much influence he (one seemingly regular not even rich person) can exert on the market, almost everywhere is talking about the buyouts, many people are just now realizing how broken the economy is.

Um...Altar of Bone is like a junk rare. It's nearly a strictly worse Eldritch Evolution and less than worthless if Survival is ever unbanned....are people suddenly playing Ice Age block constructed again, 'cause I'm all for that.

Best part about altar of bone is that it's strictly worse than eladamri's call, which can be reprinted as many times as WotC see's fit. Not to mention call is already under half the price of altar of bone. Do not get it. Same with sanctum, as enchantress is not good in legacy and I doubt it ever will be again. Cradle is at least understandable though as it's used in elves as a 4 of every time and elves is fantastic in legacy not to mention the card is bonkers in EDH.
I wonder when Berry will finally make a big move and buyout a real card like underground sea or volcanic island. If the community hates the guy for non staples like moat and city of traitors, I imagine they'd have a brain aneurysm or something over something sacred like dual lands.

He has to go for cards with limited supply. Look how many people are selling duals on MCMon Facebook, there is no way he has enough funds for that.

Craig might end up being the least of the buyout problems.
Martin Shkreli just joined the party.

Read through the whole thread; his original post was deleted and he's probably trolling but the implications of a large move on his part are certainly something to think about.

In a few months we will face some heavy problems...real sharks have joined the game.
They should rename this game MTG the unregulated stock exchange.

Pathetic.
Me insulting him personally on his genetics and how his facial prominences came together would be a low blow, I agree. Criticizing manner of dress? Fair game. I'm not attacking the individual, I'm attacking his ideas and style. No ad hominem here, good sir.
But, I'll leave that for a style/real life thread.
I'm not super excited about all this buying out and such :/

Re: [Official] Bitching About Prices, Buyouts and Reprints Thread
Ugh! These people...
Well. I guess people are free to do whatever they want. A while back, the cards drifted in price in accordance with their demand and role in the meta. These buyouts will accelerate the price towards the max bearable price, right?
How can an inflated price hold if there is no demand? I suppose the buyer can hold the cards and restrict supply, even then, it's a huge amount of capital stuck in a poorly liquid 'asset' and leaves few people buying in.

Two words: Price memory.
Price memory is the reason why speculators can make money even if they can't unload all of their stock at max value. Once a card spikes it almost never goes back down to its pre-spike price and instead settles at a value somewhere in between.
It's not even a reserve list issue. Price memory affects Modern staples as well.

I wouldn't call him a douchebag, the media has pretty much driven that narrative and the ignorant just eat it up. If anything, what he is doing is for the overall benefit of everyone.

Modern staples might as well be on the reserve list with how unwilling they are to address the skyrocketing prices. Consider how long it has been since the first modern masters and how many cards have been reprinted enough to make them affordable (ie not limited print runs). No more core sets means that they can only be printed in supplemental products (because most of them would be considered too powerful to put into standard) which would do nothing to change the upward trajectory of card prices. The entire point of Modern was to have an 'eternal' format without the restraints of card supply and the reserve list, and they still are unable to manage it properly.

Since MTG is unregulated it would be a good way to launder money if you needed to.

You are right. It is very tacky. You can't dress like a scrub and have 1 LV belt and think that changes your appearance at all. All it does it brand you as a poser. My first impression when i saw it was that it was fake because its doesnt fit with everything else in the picture. Seems like a small house, and even though he has 15k to drop on cards he couldnt spend a few hundred dollars to upgrade his phone in three years? (looks like and iphone 5)

Price memory only applies to a certain extent. At some point people will have to sell their cards or they'll die with them in the attic. When they go to sell something like 41 moats, somone has to be buying them. If normal players are priced out of the market, you have investors like him and stores. Eventually, all the existing players will have all the moats they want and no one will be buying them. How long do you hold onto something before you lower the price? a year? Two years? Prices will normalize.
Eventually, magic will be played online like hearthstone where there is no reserve list. I say eventually and I mean whenever Wizards gets their heads out of their asses and invests in a remake to their current MTGO clusterfuck. So like 5+ years away.

Well, when you start printing the most valuable cards at mythic, you'll never lower the prices. It was especially bad in MM2 when Goyf came in that slot, a card that has anything but a mythic effect on a draft. Until they're willing to run an otherwise expensive card out at uncommon or rare, it is unlikely they'll be ready to do what it takes to banish the RL.
