This new spirit seems very good. Since merfolk doesn't run brainstorms, it may be a good idea to splash white to hate on half the meta. And a bunch of blade decks with blue brainstorms and ponder.

I've read a huge amount of this thread, and in the past you played this deck, I really appreciated your old posts, they helped me play the deck better, cheers for that :)
I am still not keen on splashing white, but what would you use it for? Also curious, how do you feel about recent changes to the deck.
EDIT: Oh I just saw what you were talking about:

If there was ever a reason to splash for white, this would most certainly be it. She is a beast. Here I go on/and/on about our card advantage vs. other decks, and she comes in and evens the playing field, while completely disrupting their strategy. If splashing for white, I'd feel tempted to go auto 4 in my flexi spot. Because she comes down and immediately impacts the board, whereas Sygg, our current 2cc card dude takes a minimum of 1 turn to do anything. The 3/1 body is nice as well against combo.
Obviously she can be removed by that applies to pretty much everything but TNN who can still be removed.
So yeah, I think she is a cool dude. She would make my deck mightily expensive though. What lands do we need to run to make her viable? I guess the thing is, if we're going to run fetches to play dual colours, then we have to decide between this vs. brainstorm, which would we rather have? My guess is this since we can take advantage of only drawing 1 card per turn, and other decks get HOSED by it.
Of course, she hoses our best Merfolk (Silvergill).
She can also not trigger Silvergill. Just keep that in mind before you splash.
Also we have this set and one more still left to spoil. Word is that Modern is getting a Fish made just for them. If it is a 2/3 drop, it might make its way here too.
You could always vial in Silvergil during your opponents turn. Probably not worth the splash though.
Did not read this thread for 12 days and this happens

The only thing I am not sure is cutting Vial.
I have a set of signed Tidals, finally a good reason to try them!
And I just acquired a set of Sapphire Charms to permanently deal with Batterskull and give TNN flying to destroy Delver but that is probably too cute.
How can you save Muta from Waste and Swords? Again with the Tidal/Daze trick or...?
I agree with the creature base. Phantasmal Image has been awesome. My manabase has been reworked a bit to guarantee more draws where I can actually cast my lords and TNN, essentially forsaking Mutavault. It looks like this:
12 Island
4 Cavern of Souls
4 Wasteland
With 1 Mutavault and 3 Merfolk Reejery occupying my flexible slots. Mutavault helps me to get to the third mana in some circumstances, but I'm fairly certain I don't want them occupying actual land slots in the deck. 16 blue producing lands has been excellent for casting lords and TNN.
We have 2 camps of fish players with highly different view on what a "stock" list should look like.
I am not talking about creatures and spells. Lands.
Do we have an ambitious soul to plunder the net for merfolk results and lists with 4 Wasteland, no Muta, and 4 Muta, no Waste.
Those should tell us how to proceed.
I'm no mathematician, but assuming you're playing a 60 card deck, if you run 15 blue sources, you should, statistically speaking, be able to produce UU after drawing your 8th card (15 blue lands = 1/4 of deck, 2 = 1/4 of 8 first cards). Obviously, that's not a guarantee, but it should happen on average and every additional blue land you play increases the odds thereof.
This land issue really is the crux of Merfolk, isn't it? Mutavault and Wasteland both represent so much value, but being able to just start dropping lords on turn 2 is a good way to win many matchups. Obviously, if you know your metagame, you can probably place appropriate emphasis on Muta vs Waste, but for a generic meta, maybe a split is desired. I'm also of the opinion that 4 Cavern of Souls is likely not correct, as they're somewhat redundant with Æther Vials and hurt the reliability of Daze, while also making you more susceptible to opposing Wastelands.
If you start with the generic mana base of:
12 Island
4 Mutavault
4 Wasteland
We find ourselves looking to add 3 more blue sources. I think you could consider adding a Cavern of Souls in place of an Æther Vial, which would get us up to 13 blue. Then we could cut 1 each of the colorless lands for additional Caverns/Islands, to end up with:
13 Island
2 Cavern of Souls (could be 3 Cavern and 12 Island, but I like basics)
3 Mutavault
3 Wasteland
Admittedly, I have not played Merfolk since well before Cavern was printed, so I'm no expert. Nevertheless, it's a deck I always consider and would love to see come back to greater relevance.
Wasteland is definitely powerful and you will certainly be able to just steal some games because of it, but comparing it to Mutavault may well be a metagame call. In my local meta, for example, I've found Wasteland to be only mediocre, as there are so many fast combo decks. So, I'd rather have Muta to combat the occasional Miracles player. For an unknown or more generic meta though, I think Waste is where you really want to be at the moment.
I have a random question in regards to the big post a few pages back.
He discussed adding Tidal Warrior to his deck. Why wouldn't you run Reef Shaman instead since it's more durable? I feel like the one power offense isn't a big enough difference. It would also make it so that you could turn Submerge on in limited situations.
@JPoJohnson I think 1 extra point of damage is quite relevant, if it wasn't we wouldn't be running lords :)
T1 Deathrite makes Wasteland a joke. Also board sweepers now cost 1 mana and not 4...
We one have one 1-drop, if we don't have vial most of the time we put us behind by throwing a Wasteland.
It was probably discussed before, but TBH, I don't feel like digging in the 100s of pages of the thread.
In the current Meta, wouldn't Cosi's Trickster a good call?
I've been toying with lists for a couple of days since Im shelving Elves! for the upcoming months (too much hate!).
I know what my core will be, but Im still toying with card choices.
What are your opinion?
At this point, the core of the deck is
4 x Mutavault
4 x Cavern Of Souls
12 x Island
4 x Cursecatcher
4 x Silvergill Adept
4 x LoA
4 x Rejeerey
4 x MotPT
4 x TNN
2 x MoW (Flex Slots)
4 x FoW
3 x Daze
4 x Vial
3 x Flex Slots
Opinions?
I really appreciate!
Woohoo more Merfolk players!
From what I can see: MoW is not good. A professional ran a Merfolk and included MoW and hated it. The 4cc is brutal. Keep everything besides SB cards to 1-3cc in this meta.
You're only running 7 counters. I don't know how good/bad that is or not. I'd love to run 7 counters + dismember but I worry that by doing that, I'll open myself up to combo always winning game 1.
No Wasteland, and that is controversial. I missed it when I didn't play with it. A meta call I am guessing. You will have to mulligan less with this hand. I want to keep Wasteland so I'm thinking of running 21 land, but that is probably a bad idea tbh.
Reejery is controversial these days. I'm cutting him right now for Phantasmal Image (btw your deck needs more phantasmal image  )
The other thing is this decklist can run out of gas without a card drawing mechanism, but none of us have come up with a way to do that yet.
Most of the reason I can see to play this deck right now is 4 True Name Nemesis and 4 Phantasmal Image. Copying TNN is a beating whether it's your own or your opponent's. Without a TNN in sight, it's *only* a lord.
Does a phantasmal image tnn die to target?
No, it doesn't KobyBryan. They can't target it.
New merfolk 1U inspired - target creature gets -3/-0 2/1
The inspired trigger means we have to attack, so not very good...
If only it said at the begining of your ukeep... I guess we may be considering it with all of this talk about D&T and Maverick coming back...
