text says "you have hexproof"
This, and the decks casting more than one spell a turn aren't Lightning Bolt decks against which Canonist effects are good.
Tutorable via eTutor and Recruiter alike, but by the time it hits the board, would it not be too late? Sort of the same reason Faerie Macabre isn't good in the deck; you spend mana and a card to tutor it into your hand and by that time it might be too little too late. I'd run Leylines over this card, hell, even Witchbane Orb if it's in the Welder deck.
I don't see any if the new cards making a splash yet. They aren't any better than cards we already have, nor answer holes in the deck.

What exactly do we need hexproof from. When we lose it's not usually because they were able to target us, but because they were able to kill our grindstones or painters or both. (or they were able to keep them off the board with counter magic) Sure it might be ok against Combo decks but I don't know that it's better then other options against combo decks that already exist.
I see this as just another annoyance that we are going to have to deal with against Death and Taxes more then something we want to be playing.
Death and taxes already has true believer. And they don't even play that often enough.

Totally agree. These aren't bad but not anything dramatically better than what we have. I do like the the big butt on eidolon, but otherwise canonist is strictly better for us. I do definitely see these fitting into death and taxes or dead guy ale. Hate bears galore!

So, just crushed the weekly tourney in Copenhagen 6-0, went 12-1 in games against decks like Reanimator, Miracles, RUG Delver and Esper Stoneblade w/Restoration Angels...
How do you guys see the Reanimator and Miracles MU?
'Cause my opponents told me that they saw themselves as minor favourites, but Blood Moons on turn 1 does NOT agree with that statement? :D
First: Congrats. Awesome finish.
The matchups as I have experience with them: miracles... 50/50 grindy matchup. Koth is the all-star here. Moon can do some work depending on the draws.
Reanimator: Bridge, Bridge, Bridge!!!!!!!! Aside from that game 1 auto win if for some reason your not main boarding it... Prob their favor. Game 2/3 depends on your version. The white splash can completely hose them with RIP. Much better than crypt IMO... However I play 1 crypt in addition to 3 rip which can all be tutored for. Remember... You can win on turn 2 as well... (Although with petal they can drop a fatty T1 and shut us down) But generally we're just as fast if you can dodge their counter magic. And red blast and moon can do some work here as well. Oh... And Bridge, Bridge, Bridge!!!

Well, Last time I went into prizes at the same place was 2 months ago, so my time was due, I can tell you that :D
Funny thing.... I don't play Bridge at all :D I lost game one, for holding a sketchy hand, with only one land that haunted me.... Games 2 and 3.... BLOOD MOON :D I'm in love with that card... More and more often I end up playing beatdown/control with a moon effect on board...
Plus..... Over the past few weeks, I've become more and more aware of how AWESOME Jaya Ballard is!! :O I've always thrown her into the deck, but i've never used her, so much as i am now.... Against Miracles Game 1... Search her up and wait for the Counterbalance to come into play and BAM! :D
(Tourney writeup post) I just finished building painter a couple weeks ago. Every Thursday night, there's a legacy tourney at the local card store here in Osaka. I ran enchantress for a couple months and went 1-2 more often than not. It's a 200 yen (about 2 dollar) entry fee, and if you go 3-0, you get 1000 yen as a prize to use on singles at the store. Not huge events, but still, there's always good competition.
Anyways, last week I went 3-0, going 2-1 against each of my 3 opponents (rug delver, RWG aggro, and jund, (ending my last game of the night with me going first, turn one City of Traitors, painter on blue, turn two grindstone, play another City of Traitors, grind the opponent.)
I'm using the "Strawberry Shortcake" build that Jared Boettcher used when he went 7-1, with a slightly altered mana base (4 fetches instead of 5, 3 plateaus instead of 2)
edit - This is Jack "Kap'n Cook"'s deck build. Thanks for the great build! Those who are new to painter should really go with this build!
So after going 3-0 last week not only for the first time with painter, but for the first time in a legacy tourney, I was really hoping that my luck would shine through again! My weak point is sideboarding, so please give any sideboarding advice if you can! Anyways, here's my writeup of each match:
Match 1 - Legacy Birthing Pod
Game 1 - Mulled down to 5 but got out Ensnaring Bridge, and once it hit the board it stayed there. Got the combo eventually and the game was over.
sideboard - add in another Ensnaring Bridge, koth, and 2 firebolts in place of 1 pyroblast, one reb, and two blood moons (since he was using mostly basics with only a few nonbasic lands).
Game 2 - Kept a 7 card hand with Ancient Tomb, plateau, top, REB, SSG, recruiter, and grindstone. I go 2nd. Opponent plays out BOP, I play out plateau and top. 2nd turn, opponent plays out Kitchen Finks. I draw another land, play tomb and then recruiter into painter. Opponent goes, plays Birthing Pod and passes. I draw another land, play out the painter with tomb, and pass the turn. Back to his turn, he sacs fink to pod and gets out Solemn Simulacrum. He's completely tapped out. I top at the end of his turn, untap, draw. play grindstone and he scoops.
2-0
Match total 1-0
Match 2 - Sneak and Show
I shouldn't have won this, but this goes to show that you can turn a "i win" situation into "oh crap i lose" very quickly with just a couple misplays.
Game 1 - He mulls to 6 and just brainstorms and ponders for a couple turns. I get out painter (on blue), get the "combo" ready (as it isnt really a combo yet thanks to emrakrul), I play grindstone. He Force of Will it, i REB the fow, and then he plays intuition getting Swan Song and two fows. I pick one fow for him to get and he just scoops to my surprise. Not only could he have used the FOW with any card in his hand since painter makes everything blue, but he also wouldn't have been decked out by grindstone thanks to emrakrul and me not running graveyard hate in my mainboard. So I steal game 1 when I would normally lose. Cool.
I sideboard out 4 blood moons and magus, and sideboard in bridge, reb, RiP, and 2 tormod's crypt.
Game 2 - I use my recruiters to search for revoker (to stop Sneak Attack) and Goblin Welder (to get my ensaring bridges into play if he counters it). I have in play:
Lotus Petal, Ancient Tomb, City of Traitors, and 2 plateaus for lands, and 2 recruiters, a welder, and a revoker. He plays Show and Tell. I red elem blast it, but he FOWs that. Fine, i put the only card in my hand into play - Jaya. He puts griselbrand into play. He's at 19 thanks to a fetch. I use Goblin Welder, and switch out a Lotus Petal in my graveyard and revoker, draw a senseis top, which he counters when i try to play it. I use welder to put revoker back into play, this time targeting grisel. He draws 7 in response. He's at 12, I'm at 16 because of Ancient Tomb. His turn again. This is where his mistakes really come into play. He uses a bounce card to put revoker back in my hand, then activates griselbrand again, putting him at 5. He attacks, going back to 12. At the end of his turn, i use jaya and discard the revoker (the only card in my hand!) and deal 3 damage to him. He's at 9 and I'm at 8. My turn, i draw and then attack for 3 with the two recruiters and welder. I have one card in hand, and 7 mana available to use the 6 damage to all creatures and players with jaya (which would put him at exactly 0 and me at 1). He scoops.
Obviously his mistake came from bouncing the revoker back to my hand. He obviously had plenty of counter magic, and there was literally nothing i could do about him just attacking with griselbrand for 3 turns in a row. Me attempting to play the top when I knew my opponent had a ton of cards in hand instead of saving it for jaya was a mistake, but him putting the revoker in my hand, giving me a card for jaya and letting him lose 7 more life was really what caused him to lose. He said something about how he's never seen Jaya before and it caught him off guard, but he pretty much had the game won, and shouldn't have lost the first game either. I feel like my luck should be running out at this point...
2-0
Match total 2-0
Game 3 - Ad Nauseum Tendrils
Game 1 - I keep a 7 card hand with 2 Ancient Tomb, recruiter, SSG, Ensnaring Bridge, reb, and pyroblast. Bad choice probably but yea. My opponent mulls down to 5 and cantrips for a few turns. My first two draws are City of Traitors and top. So by turn 3 i have out two tombs and a city. I use city and top, the top 3 are painter, grindstone and whatever. I wait a turn, he doesnt play anything, I play painter naming blue. I switch out top and grindstone, play the stone, and then mill him before he could do anything.
Sideboard - I sideboard out bridge, bridge, and two revokers (tho i dunno if i should have kept them to name lotus petal, but I didn't see enough of his deck since I killed him and only really saw brainstorms and ponders.) for trinisphere, thorn, ethersworn canonist, and another REB.
Game 2 - I keep a hand of 5 lands, recruiter, top. I get into "i kill you next turn mode" after about 3-4 turns, and he says "ok i guess i have to go off this turn". He plays cantrips into DR into ad nauseum with 0 cards in hand and only a single Polluted Delta at 16 life. He gets a buncha junk that won't let him win that turn for sure till he gets down to 4. He's debating about going for another card. He flips over a Tropical Island, and then goes for one more, and gets a 4cmc card (didnt see what it was since it was in Japanese, but yea, that was it.
2-0
Match total 3-0
So my 2nd tourney with the deck, and not only do I 3-0 this one, too, but I end up not even losing a single match! Luck was on my side, as was my opponent's misplays.
And the most surprising part?
Not a single blood moon was played. Heck, not even a single blood moon was DRAWN in 6 games, im pretty sure.
Here's the tweet from the store with a picture of my deck! You might not be able to see too well, but a lot of the expensive cards are half in Japanese and half in English (1 jp p3k recruiter, 3 judge foils, 2 of each arid mesa, 2 of each grindstone, 2 jp city of traitors 1 eng, ssg too, , and how a bunch of others are different editions and stuff. I find it kind of charming, personally, haha.

So yeah, the deck is really smooth, it's a great meta deck/rogue deck, and I'm getting quite a bit of milage out of it already! I feel like sideboarding is one of my weak points tbh, but that's verymuchso an experienced based thing. I just have to play to get better! Thanks for reading guys!
^ Great Job! Jared was using Jack's (Kap) build.
Is this deck still viable without the overpriced Imperial Recruiter ; Are there any variations ?
While you CAN play it, there's no doubt that they will make the deck better... I'm playing the monoR version and I was running 2 Jaya Ballards and 2 Phyrexian Revokers, until I had all 4 recruiters... You can fiddle around with it as you like, try it out, that's all I can say :)
If your meta is full of 3+ colour decks, you should still be able to have game against most of them :)
Thanks for the clarification! I edited!
Also in regards to jaya, with blood moon/bridge lock and painter out, one of my favorite things to do is to use jaya to destroy their basic lands. For some reason this tends to make my opponents really mad, as it really seems like rubbing salt in the wound.
I don't know if a lot of people on this forum play online much, but have others noticed how much this deck is getting played online now? It's ridiculous. I've changed my SB around just to fight the mirror now.

When recruiters are as cheap as they are online, I'd think a lot of players would gravitate towards it in the paper world as well. It's the one big ticket item that keeps many from building the deck
I make an exchange offer to my local MTG shop that sells 4 DCI Imperial Recruiters for 120 euros each (480 euros total), and said "yes" : 1 Mint Time Vault from Unlimited, a NM English Moat, and 50 euros cash.
Is it a good deal ;
Did you get the recruiters or trade them away? I'd say the party that got cash, moat and time vault got the better bargain
Sent from my GT-I9001 using Tapatalk 2
According to www.magiccardmarket.eu that the store is member, the first lowest price for NM Time Vault for Unlimited is 290 euros. For the English Moat is 170 euros. 460 euros total. The Recruiters cost 480 euros... We have a difference of 20 euros. But he asked me 30 more... It's OK with me. I have no problem.
I meant, value wise, it was a roughly even trade, but the thing is Moat and Time Vault aren't reprintable. If you're looking to buy into the deck and need the recruiters, that's one thing. I was looking at it through a trader's standpoint. I'd personally hold onto the reserve list cards in an even trade, if this were an average trade, but I think you did fine with getting your Recruiters in one go.
I understand that the local store wants to earn profit. It's not my friend who trades me 1:1. Moat and Time Vault are dead cards in my album. Here in Greece we do not play Vintage, and I don't use Moat in my decks. Besides that I have 3 more Time Vaults, and 1 more Moat to play if I need them...
Lol, a playset of vaults...
Yeah you're good to go man. Do you have problems with the foil warping in the deck or are you going for foiled?

I have no choice. The price is for 4 DCI Imperials. Foiled and shiny. From Portal these cards cost way to much...

If I am going to fight this deck, I am not going to use cards like that. They are very easily stopped with a single RIP and since the white splash is becoming the norm, RIP is expected. I would use Art hate. Shattering Spree would be my first choice.
I don't know how much space you really want to dedicate to the mirror... But... Leyline of sanctity was a reasonable SB card for this deck a while back. The white splash even has a small chance to cast it.
A card like leyline though has utility for a variety of decks.

What about True Beleaver?
Personally I think if your going for the True Believer effect on a body, the new less W intensive, version which is tutorable with both enlightened tutor and Imperial Recruiter seems the better choice.
Not that I am suggesting you should play Aegis of the Gods. (Also Hexproof vs Shroud so you can theoretically target yourself if you need / want to)
Now while we are talking crazy ideas, here's a crazy one for you.
For the Mono-Red builds...
You know how some people run Chandra, Pyromaster for "card advantage" from the 0 ability. What about the new CMC 3 red creature Prophetic Flamespeaker, which is can profitably fight with x/1's and or can double up on the "card advantage" that Chandra, Pyromaster offers. It seems to be "Good" in the same situations Chandra, Pyromaster is good, and "Bad" in most of the situations that Chandra Pyromaster is bad.
Pros, 1 Cheaper, Imperial Recruiter Target, Up to 2x the "Card Advantage" of Chandra. Fights with X/1's like a champ. Kind of does a Lacky impression and says "Who knows what could happen if you don't block me?"
Cons, Is a Creature, perhaps a little more situational then Pyromaster.
I was never a huge fan of Chandra though so truth be told even though I'm bringing this up, I don't think this is really what you want to be doing just a passing thought this morning while looking though the spoliers.
I'd agree that aegis is the better choice over true believer. Its ass and cmc are the deciding factors. 2W is also easier than WW on the mana base. Interesting that such a thing is necessary, but the need shouldn't port over to paper Magic.

Most storm decks are just going to bounce him. I really don't suggest this as a way to combat storm. You either want to make their spells cost more or counter them. This guy is just a temporary road block until they find Wish or bounce.
I have been playing this recently on MTGO and I absolutely love the white splash so far. Tutoring EOT or even just trying to bait out a counter feels great. Having rest in peace as a tutorable SB option makes me feel even more comfortable. Lastly, brining the beats with painter and recruiter under 2 moon effects and after someone uses surgical extraction on Grindstone is a great feeling. I don't feel 100% comfortable with this deck (side-boarding especially) but I am sure that will come with time.
Also, has anyone been streaming with this lately? I haven't seen Kapn' on Twitch in some time. I would really like to watch a person more experienced with this deck pilot it.
If I can borrow the deck I'd love to stream a match or two. I just don't have anything on MTGO besides m11 chaff.
