Re: [BFZ]Battle for Zendikar spoilers thread
So does anyone see a single playable card? I don't even see any "good as a 1 of in nic fit" type of cards. I didn't think it was possible but this set is actually shittier than theros for eternal. It makes sense now, why they added the hyper-super-holographic-rare lands to the set at the last minute with whatever leftover concept arts they had laying around. Otherwise, legacy and modern plays would have zero interest in the set.
Re: [BFZ]Battle for Zendikar spoilers thread
Modern gets Gideon and some Ally support to potentially make a playable deck...
Looks like everyone gets to save a bunch of money on this set.
Re: [BFZ]Battle for Zendikar spoilers thread
I can only see Retreat to Coralhelm, New Ulamog, and Wasteland Strangler as being potentially playable. . .
Edit:
Wasteland Strangler seems to require DRS and STP (which then leads one into AD, GSZ, Thoughtseize, Goyf, maybe SFM and you're playing some weird BGW brew)
Ulamog maybe a one of in 12 post or turbo eldrazi.
Retreat for the Knight Combo, so some sort of Bant deck?
Re: [BFZ]Battle for Zendikar spoilers thread
Maybe the black return creature land to top in kotr decks? Pretty much agree though, theros had swan song which saw playing when sns was big
Re: [BFZ]Battle for Zendikar spoilers thread
Well, at least it has islands.
... Anyone see any art they really like?
Re: [BFZ]Battle for Zendikar spoilers thread
Good news, pre-ordering the few cards from this set that might be fun cost me just a couple of dollars (Wasteland Strangler, Retreat to Coralhelm).
Re: [BFZ]Battle for Zendikar spoilers thread
That green processor was close to the rumored one that we thought was black...and it only took that 1G activation to go from legacy/modern playable to shit. Now it takes to many hoops to make it good.

Nope, nothing in here matters at all. Which is kinda refreshing honestly.
Re: [BFZ]Battle for Zendikar spoilers thread
The set is all-around terrible. Boring mechanics, abyssal art direction, low power level and tons of overcosted crap. Quite telling they made the expedition lands since they realized how terribly they fucked up.
Story-wise, two interesting things:

Ob Nixilis seems to gain his spark back by killing Sorin/stealing his spark.

^^^ Nice observations. I'm always too busy just reading the cards to pick up on those things.
I'm also enjoying the "whenever you gain life" theme in Orzhov. Doubt it's relevant in Legacy, but it sounds like a fun Limited deck.

In other news, check out the future of cantrips. Bad
Impulse says hi:
This thing will still be a 50 cent common while in Standard, but once the set rotates and people aren't Expedition-crazy anymore, it'll get up to a dollar or two. I'd rather have this than
Sleight of Hand in Modern.
This is a reprint from Dragons, nothing new.
EDIT: To be fair, you probably missed it because it's bad and does nothing for eternal.

Wow... I just looked through the entire set and I haven't been this unexcited for a set since... first eldrazi set? Like everyone's saying, no wonder they had to throw in the full art lands so hastily. Seriously, this set is terrible.
Anyway, here are some maybe playable cards at some point in the future:
Retreat to Coralhelm: Knight of the Reliquary combo but not really that bad on its own. I like the card
Black Retreat: Fetchlands draining 2 life isn't bad. I doubt it'll see play in anything soon but at least it only costs 3.
Blighted Fen: Sac a creature is pretty great actually. It costs 5 but lands get around a lot of things and can be recurred. Might be the most playable card in the set?
Blighted Cataract: Draw 2 cards on a land is going to see play.
Quarantine Field: New Oblivion Ring for enchantress? High cost but high reward in that deck.
Ulamog: Big dumb creature always sees a spot in some list. I honestly forget what he does but since magic has turned into who can cheat the dumbest thing into play, I expect he'll find a home.
Void Winnower: Cuz trolls gon' troll.
EDIT: I don't get why people are talking about Wasteland Strangler. How is that card ever going to be good?

Whoops. Also, I started playing again in Origins, so I missed a couple years' worth of cards.

You don't understand why a 3/2 for 3cc with etb "destroy target creature" is good?

Let me guess:
It's combat sta..
No wait! It's blue so it pitches to force! It get's reshuffled from brainstorm if you don't need it?
(all jokes aside: It's super aggressively costed, it actually seems decent)

-3/-3 with a conditional modifier that they had to have something exiled to begin with?
I don't know if you're joking. It seems much worse than other conditional EtB kill creatures...

It may not be broken good, but turn 1 DRS, turn 2 exile their fetch for mana and kill their delver/mom/goblin guide/whatever still sounds fun to me. Interacts well with DRS, Flickerwisp, Swords to Plowshares, and delving on their side of things. Granted if they delve, they're probably kicking your ass with a 5/5 or comboing their face off.

In a deck with DRS, StP and probably GSZ for Scavenging Ooze in a meta choke-full of FoW and Delve spells? Not so much.
Re: [BFZ]Battle for Zendikar spoilers thread
Crazy, it all sounds like you think this card is good.
I'll be happy to be proven wrong, but it still looks like garbage to me. -3/-3 is hardly a kill spell against enough decks, against other decks where you want -3/-3 (D&T) you're not likely to see fetchlands in their graveyard that early, and even if you did you'd need to land a DRT and be able to activate him in time. A sorcery speed -3/-3 for 3 isn't good, and a 3/2 body isn't very good for 3. Putting them together amounts to something that we'll just have to wait and see.
