Re: [Bragging] Pimp Legacy Decks
But there ARE foil survivals. There's also foil, rules-less Karn, Silver Golems. They were part of a foil test-run. The Karns go for about $200 and the survivals run anywhere from $800-$3000 depending on who's selling them and how much they know about them.
Re: [Bragging] Pimp Legacy Decks
There are a few textless foils including Gaea's Cradle, Duress and Lightning Bolt.

Thanks! :) The ink bled a bit, I may get another mat and redo it with a finer marker.

More pictures time. The card blinded by the flash is Bloodstained mire.

Re: [Bragging] Pimp Legacy Decks
As far as pimping goes, I tend to prefer plain English cards with black borders, usually the first edition. No foils, no other languages, no white borders, no signatures and no modified artwork. There are exceptions to these rules though. For example, I didn't mind purchasing three timeshifted Lord of Atlantis in addition to the one beta I have. To me, they're just as good.
I generally consider altered cards to be inferior to their unmodified counterparts. After seeing some of the artistry in the altered art thread and in other places though, I wouldn't mind possessing painted versions of some cards, in addition to an unmodified playset.
Foils just don't appeal to me at all and they never have. They're still nice though, in that I can always trade them away in favor of non-foils with a little extra thrown in for me, which is good.

Are you crazy? How are they even close?

"Just as good" is a bit inaccurate. It's not worth as much of course and it isn't as rare and cool as its beta counterpart, but it's close enough for me. It has the original art, black borders and English card text. There was just no way I was ever going to pay $40 for beta lords after we got Timeshifted.
I also have a couple of beta Psionic Blasts I bought years ago in that same merfolk deck. Today, I would probably just have purchased the timeshifted ones instead.
These are rather the exceptions though. I usually prefer the first black bordered English non-foil editions whenever I purchase cards.
Oh, and another preference I have which puts me at odds with the trends: I much prefer the white bordered English revised duals over the black bordered foreign ones.
Re: [Bragging] Pimp Legacy Decks
So you don't care about pimp cards, yet you're posting in the Pimp Deck Thread...
We get it, you care about play value vs pimp value
Less talking more picture posting

That is not what I said. The following is what I said about my preference for some of the timeshifted cards over the originals:
These are rather the exceptions though.
The point was that in this case, I personally find that the reprint is sufficiently close in form to the original. The beta original is still cooler and better in terms of "pimp value", but not so much so that the price tag can be justified for me anymore.

I don't see the problem with discussing card pimping in the card pimping thread. Also, the best way of providing advice to others is usually by example:

Re: [Bragging] Pimp Legacy Decks
well, pimp is relative to each own. by standard, it's foil, signed, altered, asian stuff, or all at once. not everyone is into that stuff though, I've always hated scribbling my cards, I like them as minty as they were out of the pack (for me, that's pimp). and while I do like foreign stuff very much (mostly italian, spanish, and OMG russian cards are sexy, but asian is fine too except for the fact everyone has them), I don't like foils either
curiously, my favourite duals are also unlimited or revised, despite hating white borders generally: I don't know, ever since I started playing I've associated duals with white borders so I grew up to like them. but betas are sexy, I'm not too crazy about FBB ones

This is a good point which I should have mentioned in my response to Ophidian. There's really no set rules for what constitutes the most desireable version of a card, as it really comes down to the personal preferences of the player or collector. I don't like foils or asian stuff either, but I can see very good reasons why a lot of people hold these in higher regard. They're usually harder to acquire, a lot of people think foils look better, a signed card has been held in the hands of the artist who depcited the art on it (usually), some people think foreign cards have an exotic feel to them and altered art cards can look stunning.
Adding these things up, a card that was initially printed in tens of thousands of copies can be remade into a unique item, a one-of-a-kind piece of art on its own, and it's no wonder why people find this a desireable quality. There is nothing at all wrong with this, even though my own preferences for what constitutes the most preferable are much less novel and quite simple.
I use these in a somewhat casual scepter/chant deck I recently built:

My only issue is that your first two posts in the thread were of what your opinion of "what pimp is/isn't" and how you'd rather play with Timeshifted vs Beta, and how you prefer to trade foils for non-foils.
That's like someone saying, "I like playing with 5th ed lands cause I think they're cool." If you do, whatev.. just post pics and let the hot or not jury decide
Re: [Bragging] Pimp Legacy Decks
No in your posting pictures, you post BEAUTIFUL NM/MINT older cards.
Now THAT is pimp! If you play old cards, and they are perfect they just look amazing.

City of Traitors, Survival of the Fittest, Oath of Lieges, Plaguebearer, Memory Crystal, Mana Breach, Fighting Chance, and Pygmy Hippo all exist in test-print foil form. Please know what the fuck you're talking about before you chime in.

Since when did the mods allow you to brainfart around here again?
There are some foil test-prints out there, but you can just hardly get them. Those textless foil-testprints also exist. At the SPIEL 07 in Essen last year I held a textless Duress, a textless Gaea's Crade and a textless Pygmy Hippo in my hands. Those are all I can remember, but they cost about 900 bucks each and are just for collecting since they are not tournament legal and not worth playing since you simply don't want to damage them.
But Edgar Summer Magic is still the most pimp thing you can buy regulary.
My buddy Richard (of whom I have all my japanese pimp-stuff) has got a shitload of japanese stuff and also collects some Summer Magic stuff and got his hand on a Summer Magic Volcanic Island via connections.
Re: [Bragging] Pimp Legacy Decks
At GP Philly there was a vendor that had some really nice stuff. A whole binder of summer magic stuff, a textless Duress, a textless Cradle, a 5th ed. Animate dead that had the back of the card printed over the front (the back was blank) and they also had one of the test print islands. The one with Parallax tide for the pic and the new magic border...it was all hawt!

"I Will Survive" pimpness of note. There's something for everyone....Beta Savannahs for the FBB haters, English Loyal Retainers for the Asian-language haters, and Saffi needs no justification. Bottle Gnomes are there for Tarmogoyf. Really.

....and some of the sideboard that I had handy. Bonus points to Harmonic Sliver for being an amazing looking foil.

Linessas for no good reason. Well, I play them in an ATS variant....I guess that's a reason.
