Big Red top8's SCG Worcester. Established decks @mods?
Using Hyze's deck. Twas beautimus!
Did a write up about the deck and my finish at WOR on my weekly column today -> http://articles.mtgcardmarket.com/a-big-red-top-8/
I've been testing Jeff Hoogland's 75 to great success on Xmage (yes, I realize it's Xmage, but I've actually encountered a lot of Tier 1/2 decks on there). I was actually running undefeated for a bit, but ran into some trouble against Goblin Stompy (drew poorly/mulliganed a lot) where our hate cards basically mirror theirs but they have Goblin Rabblemaster to close the game quickly if we don't have an answer/fast start. Also lost to Omni-Tell, which seems pretty miserable since our hate is essentially useless there as well. Otherwise the deck seems very strong. 5 mana seems to be the sweet spot, which makes Seething Song the perfect card for this deck. With 5 mana, we can cast Through the Breach, Sneak Attack + activation, Chalice for 1 + Trinisphere, etc.
I think I just need to keep practicing with the deck and figuring out the most optimal lines, when to mulligan, and sideboarding strategies. I would've never though to side out Seething Song ever, but after reading Hoogland's write-up, it makes perfect sense.
OmniTell is a coin flip MU. - 4 Seething song + 4 Trinisphere ( I then -2x Bloodmoon for 2 Magus, because body.) Sandbag the 3 ball. If you draw a second. Play the first. But you should ALLLLWAYs hold that for when they S&T.
Goblin stompy takes a shit hard to sneakattack + any fatty ever. They have answers to a couple but, take out the blood moons, bring in some burn. you can pretty much eat them alive.
Yeah, I figured I just got unlucky to Goblin Stompy and my opponent had a good draw.
Great idea to sandbag the Trini against Omni-Tell. Never thought of that. Do you basically mulligan until you hit a Trini?
Either that or a get a turn 1 chalice for 1 down They can't cantrip into their win cons as easily that way. If you can get a chalice for 3 later on that's perfect because then they're pretty much fucked. Honestly I've logged probably 50 matches against omnitell in the past year. It's entirely a coinflip, sometimes you have the turn 2 sneak into win. Sometimes they release the shit out of the ants.
Guys, what do you side out (Hyze/Jeff's list) against D&T?
-1 Sneak Attack
+2 Pyromancy (more threats against needles/revokers)
+2 Sulfur Elemental
+2 Sudden shock (against containment priests)
(maybe Ignot chewers against chalice/revoker)
What do you side out? Blood Moons? I always find it hard to board these out since it counters there Karakas, Ports and Wastes.
So I won my local weekly Legacy event last night with Jeff's 75 (aside from a few minor sideboard tweaks to suit the local meta). Could've been beginner's luck, as this was my first time piloting the deck on paper and in a tournament setting, but overall I felt confident in every matchup. The main deck, in my opinion, is perfect. The side could maybe use some work to even better combat the local meta, but for the most part it was fine and the minor tweaks I made worked out well.
I'm strictly going off memory, but here goes:
Round 1 vs Burn:
Game 1 I'm on the draw and after he hits me with Goblin Guide, I land a Chalice for 1, which shuts off a lot of his hand. I take a few more Guide hits before I'm able to Through the Breach a Griselbrand, which pretty much seals it.
Game 2 he's stuck on lands and I land a turn 1 Trinisphere, which effectively closes the game. I make it official with Griselbrand followed by Inferno Titan (Titan was amazing all night btw).
2,0, 1-0
Round 2 vs Omni-Tell:
Was worried about this matchup going into it, but it was actually kind of fun. Game 1 we both durdle a bit looking for our combo pieces, and he finally seals the deal with double Sneak Attack activation of Griselbrand and Emrakul.
Game 2 he mulls to 5 and is basically hellbent after he Force of Wills two of my Sneak Attacks. He is scared to pull the trigger on a Show & Tell thinking I have big fatties in my hand, which I didn't. The bluffs I made in this match (as the same happened in the other games) were great, and he had a major fear of casting Show & Tell. Finally I land 2 Batterskulls and kill him as he's basically holding the win in his hand but too scared to cast it.
Game 3 I mull to 5, but he can't find any fatties to go along with his 2 Sneak Attacks. I finally hard cast an Inferno Titan and ride it to victory.
2-1, 2-0
Round 3 vs Shardless BUG:
Game 1 I'm on the draw, and he gets a Deathrite followed by a Goyf. I land Godo, search up Batterskull. He is forced to Toxic Deluge for 4 to wipe the board. I then land a Sneak Attack and activate it for Worldspine Wurm beats for the win.
Game 2 he gets another turn 1 Deathrite, but I'm able to stick a turn 1 Blood Moon. I follow that up with a turn 2 Pyroclasm to kill his Deathrite and essentially lock him out of his colors.
2-0, 3-0
Round 4 vs UR Delver:

Like I said, the deck seemed great. The only tricky matchup was Omni-Tell. Is there anything we can sideboard that might make that matchup a little more in our favor. There's a lot of it in my area.
I did it
http://mtgtop8.com/event?e=13150&d=277000&f=LE
Never draw it and only lost to Miracles where I couldn't draw it. The Thursday before I won against the same player with Miracles. Was a bit unlucky against him but he plays really good. Was also in the Top 8. Lost against the punishing thing deck in top8.
Looking for some sideboard advice based on my meta. Trying to customize for my weekly events.
This is what is prevalent in my area:
D&T
Lands/Aggro Loam
Omni-Tell
UR Delver
Shardless BUG
Infect
EsperBlade
Current sideboard is an adaptation of Hoogland's updated sideboard:
4 Trinisphere
2 Sulfur Elemental
2 Magus of the Moon
1 Pyroclasm
1 Null Rod
1 Boil
2 Sudden Shock
2 Ingot Chewer
Any recommendations?
So this week I 0-2 dropped. Faced back to back Omni-Tell. Is there anything else I can do for this matchup? Seems like they do what we do but better, as they have more avenues to victory backed up by permission and card selection. Perhaps I'm keeping subpar hands or not playing optimally, but this seems miserable.
I was running 2x Ashen Riders when we had 3 OmniTell Players. In that Match Up. -4 bloodmoon -4 seething song + 2 Magus of the moon +2 ashen rider +4 trinisphere
Bloodmoons cut: I don't like them in this MU. They need to curve out at 3, which is not difficult at all
Seething Song Cut: Don't want to draw many of these, they're not a threat
Magus add: It has feet, sometimes they brick and damage is damage, push what you can
Ashen Rider Add: Self Explanatory
Trinisphere: Self Explanatory
I actually died with Emrakul in hand. Having Emrakul does nothing against an opposing Omniscience. They'll just cast Emrakul, take an extra turn and annihilate my board. Sandbagging Trinisphere seemed like a good idea on paper, but the times I drew it my opponent had plenty of extra mana to cast Emrakul around it and still kill me.
I was actually thinking about Ashen Rider during the matches last night. I think I'm going to try this out.
Mull till you see trinishpere.
Turrible matchup. A couple ways I've dealt with it when it gets heavy in the local meta:
Hold trinishpere until they cast show and tell or hit 4 lands. 5th land means dream halls hard cast and you're dead. Run out the rest of your hand asap.
Bring in pyromancy make your land drops and draw fatties, drop it on their show and tell and kill them in response to trying to cast their next spell.
Chaos warp, chaos warp, chaos warp.
Ashen rider, woodfall primus, terrastodon
Potato is right about SB. I like to leave in 1 song (especially on the pyromancy plan). The other three and the moons should come out. You don't want to slow yourself down by turning off your sol lands.
