Re: [DTB] Miracle Control
Hi guys,
So, I'm playing this weekend at the Danish Legacy Masters tournament in Copenhagen, where we're expecting somwhere around 100+ players. I've been playing 4-ponder miracles for a while now, and I'm very happy with the main deck. However, I keep going back and forth about the sideboard, and can't make up my mind. I'm currently running the following:
MAIN
3 Snapcaster Mage
4 Brainstorm
4 Ponder
4 Sensei's Divining Top
4 Swords to Plowshares
4 Force of Will
4 Counterbalance
4 Terminus
2 Entreat the Angels
2 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
2 Dig Through Time
1 Counterspell
1 Council's Judgment
10 Fetchlands
4 Island
2 Plains
3 Tundra
2 Volcanic Island
SIDEBOARD
2 Flusterstorm
3 Vendilion Clique
3 Red Elemental Blast
2 Meddling Mage
1 Supreme Verdict
1 Disenchant
1 Engineered Explosives
1 Council's Judgment
1 Counterspell
So, I'm unsure about the sideboard. The doubts I have are the following:
1. I'm currently not running any gravehate. I haven't seen many graveyard decks around, and it feels like I can fight Reanimator on the stack, and dredge with terminus. Am I wrong? Should I dedicate 1/2 spots to gravehate?
2. I'm running a LOT of combo hate, which I like very much against Omni (which I expect to be VERY popular) and Storm (which is historically popular in DK), but I'm worried I'm emphasizing this too much.
3. I'm worried I don't have enough against Death and Taxes (the other super popular deck in Denmark). My current board plan is to remove 4 counterbalance and 2 force, and bring in 3 Cliques, Disenchant, Engineered Explosives, and Council's Judgment. Is this good enough if I'm expecting a lot of DnT, or do I need more?
The meta I'm expecting is heavy in Omni and DnT, with Delver, stoneblade, miracles and ANT as the second most common decks. Of these, I'm currently happy about facing stoneblade, ANT, mirror and Omni, but I'm unsure about DnT. The delver matchups really depend on which one it is, but I think I generally have the tools to deal with them.
Let me know what you think, and thanks!

Cut the sideboard Council's Judgment for a Relic of Progentius. It's great vs loam, reanimator, ant, dredge AND any deck with DTT/snapcaster mage.

Honestly, I wouldn't be bringing in Clique vs. Death and Taxes. It looks good because, yeah, it can snipe stoneforge, but at the end of the day it straight up dies to thalia beats and Karakas controls the heck out of it.
Cards I'm interested in are Disenchant, EE, and Counterspell. What you cut is sort of dependant, but I tend to cut Council's Judgment, a Force of Will, and maybe either a counterbalance or a land. (I think Ein once told me to cut a plains? It's in AnziD's notes). You're never going to reliably have 2 white mana available for CJ in your main phase, so why bother trying.
Disenchant is great at taking out equipment. EE can clean up Vial / Thalia / whatever, and Counterspell is great vs. Cataclysm. Generally the goal here is to keep the board clear, through a mixture of terminus and killing of aether vial. Snapcaster is incredible in this matchup, and 4 swords really shine, just make sure you don't get locked out by mom.
Whether counterbalance stays in entirely depends on how many copies of Cavern you see. Caverns make counterbalance bad, not aether vial, because we can remove aethervial. Forces can be used on T1 vial, but should generally be saved with Cataclysm in mind, as in the late game this is their best out against you. If you see a lot of caverns, time to shift gears and consider boarding out some number of balances.
Good luck at your event.

I don't know why you would want CB against Vial decks. You want:
1. cards that would kill their dudes.
2. cards that would blow up their taxing pieces, including needle/revoker
3. cards that are creatures so you can most likely block, or cards that make creatures.
4. cards that counter Cataclysm, not by lucky flipping.
I can not stress enough of just SB-ing creatures. You can just randomly unlock the taxing because your opponent decides to attack with revoker and you flash in a dude to kill it. If not Clique, Priest would work as well.

I think it's worth bringing them in if you don't have them maindeck, despite it dying to Thalia:
- It blocks and kills everything else in their deck except for Brimaz.
- You can snipe both Stoneforge and Aether Vial activations, the second of which could be way more relevant
- There's a good chance they'll board out some of their removal if they think the only creatures you run are Snapcasters
- If my D&T opponent decides the best use of their Karakas is constantly bouncing my Clique, rather than protecting their own Thalia, I am totally OK with that.
I don't think you need more, you've got 6-7 slots and clear things to take out. So maybe you board in 2 Cliques and the Counterspell instead of 3 Cliques? Also, if the red splash (for Imperial Recruiter & Magus of the Moon) becomes popular, I think we have a way better matchup there than against the mono-white version.

CJ is great, though. If you Pithing Needle naming Port, you'll have WW often enough. CJ is one of the only ways to get rid of Bskull. Hoping for the one-of Disenchant/W//T isn't good enough.
Re: [DTB] Miracle Control
I wouldn't board out CB against D&T. We have a lot of ways to interact with Vial (Priest/Needle/Wear.Tear/etc.) and CB becomes nearly a hard-lock if they don't draw Vial, or if you deal with Vial. I always take out Forces against D&T. Then again, my SB is pretty good for creature MU's with Verdict, Fire//Ice, Path to Exile, etc. and I run 3 MB snaps + Thopter/Swords. I am still amazed by people not running 2 Priests in their SB's. That card is extremely potent in this meta against a huge variety of decks.
Re: [DTB] Miracle Control
Thanks to KTK and the announcement Modern Masters 2015 I got the last of the cards I needed to make RUG Lands and UWR Miracles. I wanted to give Reanimator a break since I've developed a reputation as being Reanimator guy so I wanted to bring something out of left field. There is a part of me that wants to generate misery for my opponent while winning. I've tried doing this in the past with Stasis and Stax but they were too inconsistent to get me victories. For now I want to have Miracles as my alternative go-to deck.
Main Deck (60)
Creatures (3)
1 Snapcaster Mage
2 Vendilion Clique
Spells (34)
1 Pyroblast
2 Ponder
3 Swords to Plowshares
4 Brainstorm
4 Sensei's Divining Top
2 Counterspell
4 Counterbalance
1 Council's Judgment
2 Entreat the Angels
1 Elspeth, Knight-Errant
2 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
3 Force of Will
3 Terminus
2 Dig Through Time
Lands (23)
1 Karakas
1 Mountain
1 Volcanic Island
2 Arid Mesa
2 Plains
3 Tundra
4 Flooded Strand
4 Scalding Tarn
5 Island
Sideboard (15)
1 Flusterstorm
1 Hydroblast
1 Pyroblast
1 Wear // Tear
2 Pithing Needle
2 Meddling Mage
2 Rest in Peace
1 Blood Moon
1 Council's Judgment
1 Venser, Shaper Savant
1 Baneslayer Angel
1 Force of Will
My trouble right now is figuring out the mainboard, should be I running more cliques than snapcasters?. I know most people will say the Elspeth should be the first thing to go but I've had fair success with it as it's very hard to get rid of if it sticks. Baneslayer has proven to be a house against BGx decks and the newer Reanimator pilots in my meta as they all seem to go for Griselbrand no matter the matchup. Also is the MB Basic mountain justifiable if the only MB spell I run is a singleton Pyroblast?
Re: [DTB] Miracle Control
What do you think of the Goblins matchup?
Re: [DTB] Miracle Control
Very, very bad.
But they literally cannot beat a Moat.
Re: [DTB] Miracle Control
Yeah that's what I thought. The problem is that because Miracles doesn't run any form of mana accel by the time i manage to land a Moat I'm either already dead or he can finish the last points with the dude that flings goblins. I've tried running enlightened tutor to find it faster but it didn't work because ports kept me in check too much. Any good advice on the goblins matchup? Everytime I play it seems like I'm trying to cover a hole in a boat but by the time I cover that hole there are like 3 new holes.

Either mull to moat or just have enough Swords and Terminus to keep them at bay until you find one. Liberally flash in Snapcasters even if there's no value to be had.

If your they is goblin, that's not true.
1. seige-gang
2. assume they splash White for combo hate, they might have wear//tear
3. anarchy
Moat is just unrealistc.

1. If you are going to Terminus, you want to follow it up with Entreat ASAP. Goblins most likely sandbag a Matron or Ringleader to rebuild the board.
2. Do not bank on Blue cards like Blue Blast or Snapcaster for that extra removal, very likely Goblin will just Red Blast it.
3. 4 Mana enchantments like humility or moat are unrealistic because all the Wasteland/Port, not fast enough. Some Goblin builds run Goblin Settler, can go after your basic lands as well.
4. Goblin SB games sometimes splashes White for hate-bear like Thalia and/or Wear//Tear for problematic enchantments (Engineered Plague).
5. Run more stuff like pyroclasm and/or Supreme Verdict. These cards actually put goblins in graveyard, prevent Goblins from rebuilding, re-tutoring once you put them at bottom of library.

Hey,
yeah a lot of people has been bugging me about this for quite some time though. There are a few things, though.
1) I will never play MODO. This might actually discourage a fair number of people as they're used to these high-stakes events that Daily events seem to be.
2) I play very irregularily. I spend most of my evenings with my martial arts classes right now. Sometimes I start playing at 6pm. Sometimes when I come home at 11pm. Sometimes I don't play. I can def. see how people would be annoyed by this.
3) I like to be on Skype with my opponents. On the one hand this offers a better playexperience to me and my testpartner/opponent, on the other hand it prohibits me from interacting with the chat one way or another.
4) I am not sure that I'd be entertaining while still playing at my best, and this is what streaming is actually about, as far as I know.
5) When I'm testing regularily (like right now) I am preparing for a big tournament just like GP Lille for the time being. We have a testing team with different people and decks from all over the globe and I wouldn't have my deck revealed unnecessarily early, same for my opponents one. So I'd have to stream after big events, which is traditionally the time where I don't test a lot.
6) I'm only playing on Cockatrice. Most viewers are used to MODO. Change isn't something that the human race likes.
Yeah, I think these are the main points why I don't stream at the moment. I hope you can understand some of them. :)
Maybe I'll stream once, but I'm not sure.
There's a new list in the making, though. It'll be revealed at GP Lille, and based on our testing it looks very promising. :)
Greetings

I'll be going back and rereading AnziD's document of "stuff Phillip said" and fixing my approach to the matchup.
Edit: After reading back through the document, I agree that boarding out cb is correct. However I still disagree with boarding in clique, at least as a primary card.
With Philipp's list I'd board as such:
-4 CB
-1 Force (down to 2 in the MD)
+1 EE
+1 CJ
+1 Disenchant
+2 Clique (nothing better to bring in)
If he has 4 force MD, board out a second one for the counterspell that's likely sitting in the board.
Re: [DTB] Miracle Control
I really enjoyed you on Julian's stream, so if you don't do it yourself, I'd love to hear more of you on other people's.
But that whole stream was made by just blind flipping opponents like a total scrub.

Thanks for the reply!
I'm looking forward for those changes... I mean, I've been toying around with the core of the deck for a while but as I really don't have many time to playtest properly it becomes very difficult to really REALLY justify any changes.
You should definitely come to GP Buenos Aires man, we have an awesome Legacy community :P
Re: [DTB] Miracle Control
Is Containment Priest no good against D&T? Seems like another angle to attack Vial. I guess I haven't thought too much about what would come out for it though. Is that part of the problem of trying to bring it in?

I've been looking for a reason to see South America for quite some time now. If there should ever be a Legacy GP during my vacation times there's a very real chance of me coming. My goal for this summer is China though and the GP in Buenos Aires isn't Legacy.
