Re: [Primer] Food Chain Combo
Yeah, my opponent always uses their counters on my Food Chain/Griffin... they don't have anything left for the main course that follows (which usually isn't necessay as 3 Griffins will kill them anyway). I like Tyrant because my local meta knows what I play and brings annoying crap like Ensnaring Bridge and Blazing Archon to the party. Tidespout Tyrant can get round all that. If you suspect your opponent is sandbagging a swords just keep an instant in hand to bounce the Tyrant with :D
There's also a few Burning Wish Reanimator players locally where Mindbreak Trap can be a game winner when they try to fetch up a tendrils for the win. I totally agree with you about Thoughtseize being the superior discard spell but I do like the ThaliaMK2 killing option of Brutality at the moment... i'll have to see how entrenched she becomes in D&T lists before going back to Thoughtseize.
chinEsE girl ran 4 Hymn to Tourach at GPLouisville and said it worked wonders for them, whereas i've always found that card lacklustre against anything but Storm.
Re: [Primer] Food Chain Combo
I have a little tournament tomorrow and I'm looking at my actual list..... I was thinking about the matchups I can face...... how can I deal with decks like burn/UR delver? I don't find a lot of solution in the traditional sideboard......carpet of flower is good against delver, toxic deludge so and so, flusterstorm ok......what else? Ok, DTS can give us some life, but I think it will not last a lot....
I don't think they are good matchups, and the lack of solution in the SB scares me....

Chill and Sun Droplet are good against Burn Strategies.
Always deal with their creatures by presenting blockers or removal.
Always fetch for basic lands to play around Wasteland/Price of Progress.
I really like Misdirection in Food Chain, it can really blowout some decks.

I run jitte and scavenging ooz for extra lifegain and sometimes chill in SB. Some people seem to like Pulse of Murasa. I think UR is an ok MU. Burn is horrible though.

Re: [Primer] Food Chain Combo
thanks guys, I'll see if I can change my SB to free some slots.
Re: [Primer] Food Chain Combo
Burn is just dreadful if you're playing the full on combo version. They are probably a turn faster than us and waay more consistent. Happily there's not much in my local meta, but if it were I would certainly be putting 2 Sun Droplet into my SB. Chill is of course amazing but far too narrow for my liking!
I never have much trouble against UR delver although it is one the match ups where I want murderous cut... that card is soo good! I really want it somewhere in the 75.
Re: [Primer] Food Chain Combo
as I foresaw............. UR delver last night!! Lost 0-2..... it's very hard to resist to delver turn 1, to play around price of progress...everything is slow here: leovold, griffin, you tapped out and a bolt destroys your plan.
Nevervind, it was fun, beat BUG and stoneblade, lost miserably against merfolks (another matchup that is HORRIBLE I think, isn't it? also because when I face nemesis it comes down ALWAYS on turn 3 :( ......).
Re: [Primer] Food Chain Combo
Andrea Mengucci playing Food Chain in a Legacy League...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhYpbmLz06E&t=45s
He's playing Eric English's list from GP Louisville - minus a Leovold cos he's skint after buying the Combo Pieces haha!
He does pretty well but misses some of the less obvious things you can do with the deck. Interesting to see how the Hymns work out of the board too... I still think that targeted discard is better but if it's working for the pros I may be convinced to play along.
[Primer] Food Chain Combo
Yeah merfolk is terrible. With those kind of decks i would switch a strix for a fourth decay.

Walking Ballista and Trinket Mage is now an option over the Fierce Empath package

Yeah that's interesting

spicy, but what are the advantages of playing trinket over empath? cmc is the same, but at least with empath you can gram gurmag angler. The nice thing of ballista is that you don't need to pass trought combat to win, but I never had problem with this. Also with bridges post side, we have decays and we can win with shamans or tiny creatures.

Indeed interesting new option here
Pros :
- Trinket mage is a 2/2 body
- it can be pitched to FOW
- other tutoring options available : sensei's diving top ?
- Walking ballista bypasses ensnaring bridge and blazing archon issues
- it can also be used outside of the combo, although seems pretty weak
Cons :
- Trinket mage cannot tutor Gurmag Angler
- Walking ballista is counterable, although food chain usually get to be targeted by counterspells first. Same thing as a phyrexian revoker target.

And we would also eventually prefer having Emrakul over Ballista against Show & Tell and Painter decks (although Ballista could save us from Magus of the moon).
Re: [Primer] Food Chain Combo
I'm not endorsing Ballista, but it's definitely interesting. It doesn't have to be played with Trinket Mage, maybe we could just play a couple of Ballistas alone.
However, Trinket Mage opens up Top main, and for the SB: Pithing Needle, Engineered Explosives, Tormod's Crypt, potentially even Chalice of the Void (though that hits a lot of our cards on 1).
Though we would lose Empath, we could just play a couple of delve threats alone.
I like having a couple of discard main to help get past counters. But Revoker is potentially a real issue (though probably the first one is naming Food Chain).
Re: [Primer] Food Chain Combo
A big downside to Balista is that you effectively need to go infinite for it to kill, while Tidespout (and theoretically even Emrakul) can be cast by chaining into it.
Re: [Primer] Food Chain Combo
Ballista is nice since it has applications outisde of combo. Two mana answer to Thalia for example, that ignores MoR

With trinket you could find explosives and GY-hate post board.

True it also makes us a little weaker to null rod.
Re: [Primer] Food Chain Combo
Hey guys,
a Ballista version just won a 34 man turney last Sunday which went 7-0-2 undefeated if you add the Top 8 matches.

No spicy 1offs or special stuff, just a straight forward clean list which I like.
