generally, if you are worried about a wasteland hitting the board when you could have created your token the correct play is create the token on your turn. HOWEVER, if you expect the opponent to have a sorcery speed answer to the token on their turn than it is generally better to wait.
Also, I'm not really sure how he won with a copy of your token. If the card you are referring to is phyrexian metamorph, then he copied the token on his turn and neither of you attack until you can get through the blocker. For your deck it should be relatively easy to find a sejiri steppe to give protection and attack through. His deck has fewer ways to attack through. If he just happen to find his answer before you then thats just bad luck. Sure you could have waited to make the token but he would have had wasteland for it and things would have gotten increasingly difficult from there since they put you on a rather quick clock.
its possible you didn't mean death rite shaman. Deathrite shaman's ability is not "combat" damage and is not prevented by constant mist or moments peace.
Hey everyone, I'm currently playing Oran's list from Eternal Weekend and I was wondering if I could get some insight regarding sideboarding. I created a sideboarding table to make it easier on myself.
Is there anything that seems incorrect, or you would do differently? I feel like deciding what to take out of the maindeck is more difficult than what to put in from the sideboard.
SIDEBOARD
1 Winter Orb
4 Chalice of the Void
3 Abrupt Decay
1 Pithing Needle
3 Surgical Extraction
1 Crucible of Worlds
1 Karakas
1 Krosan Grip

First, I'd turn the chalii into spheres, winter orb into a 2nd ghost quarter, and grip into a deluge. I'd also trash for Ioks for duress.
* DnT - Looks good, remove an extra duress for the deluge and a colored manasource for the GQ
* Miracles - Looks good, add the GQ
* Lands- Looks good, add the GQ
* Eldrazi - Looks good, add the GQ and Deluge
* Delver - Looks good
* Infect - Looks good, add deluge
* Storm - Looks good
* rest - looks good
I am in a similar place as JmdDave. I am still testing Garruk instead of Deluge, but the extra GQ is a strong alternative to bog against non-graveyard decks.
My testing is going slow because of work and I am enjoying playing Sun and Moon in modern atm. Turn 1 Chalice on 1 apparently is good in modern too.
Still can't get a read on finalizing the SB after another league (4-1, FUCK BELCHER), but deck submission time is coming up fast. I'm heavily leaning towards GQ at the moment, although a 2nd deluge, 1x Ith, or 1x Crucible are all tempting. Are we sure loam is inferior to crucible? I'd rather not shell out if possible.
Sideboard
* 4 Sphere
* 3 Surgical
* 3 Decay
* 1 Karakas
* 1 Needle
* 1 Deluge
* 1 Charm
* 0-1 Flex
Maindeck
* 12 Combo Lands
* 2 Snow
* 3 Utility (Bog/Steppe/GQ)
* 3 Marsh
* 2 Verdant
* 1 Bayou
* 4 Scrying
* 3 Into (Scrying is better)
* 1 Library
* 4 Duress
* 4 Tseize
* 4 ESG
* 4 Petal
* 4 Hexmage
* 2 Not of this world
* 3 Needle
* 4 Crop Rotation
I understand the general concensus is that crucible is superior (3 cmc miracles blindspot, doesn't harm draws, doesn't remove silver bullets), but it still seems somewhat iffy. I'll test 2 leagues with crucible and 2 leagues with loam.
Moreover, what are everyones thoughts on a sideboarding plan vs. the various delver variants? A metagame analysis of the last japanese GP saw a HUGE amount of Delver, specifically regarding Sphere of Resistance.
The only reason we sideboard vs Delver at all is because we have dead cards in our maindeck. The matchup is that good.
-3 Not of This World
-1 Bojuka Bog (if not graveyard based)
-0-2 Duress
max out: 5 cards
+4 Decay
+4th needle
max sideboarding: 5 cards
I don't understand this 2nd Ghost Quarter nonsense. Do you guys know you can copy it with Stage? I don't understand how 2nd Ghost Quarter is better than having a chance in the Miracles matchup after turn 5.
Regarding Delver - I've been following a similarly minimalistic approach to great results online
As for Miracles/2nd GQ, what are you in favor of? Planeswalker or Crucible or something else?
Agree with DNSolver, it's so poor to imitate a Lands' strategy with just 1 Crucible & 1+1 Ghost Quarter. Without any accelerants like Exploration, it's a losing game honestly. The GQ plan even sucks in Lands when you don't have an accelerant.
What about 1-2 Lilianas? The reason being it's cheaper than the other options. Honestly, I just thought of 1 Steely Resolve/1 Crucible to stay focused.
I've actually considered the new Liliana for the D&T/Delver matchups. Are there any delver specific cards you would recommend?
may I ask have you at least tried the Chalices? personally I would never replace Chalices for Spheres in Miracle or Reanimator matchup. BR Reanimator plays SSG and Petals so it can get through Sphere rather easily and they often just need one or two 1CMC spells. As for Miracles they will still be able to STP the token for 1 colorless more, which imho negates the need of sideboarding Sphere against this deck.
as for new Liliana? - what exactly does it help you with? why looking for SB cards for decks we already beat and not focus on those which trump us down?
I am trying two Massacres in sb against D&T as I noticed more and more Reanimator decks include them in their SB. See how it goes.
My SB at the moment -
4 Chalice of the Void
3 Surgical Extraction
3 Abrupt Decay
1 Pithing Needle
1 Garruk Relentless
1 Karakas
2 Massacre
The extra GQ may not be needed, but there were a lot of matchups where I wanted to find it. I will still advocate for Crucible. It has stolen me matches that I should have lost. It is yet another answer to wasteland and you don't need accelerants for it to be good. I am not trying to copy lands and hate out a deck with land destruction, but being able to bring your threats back is important and helps you grind against decks that want to pull the game long. One of the great things about this deck is it keeps making Marit Lage and it is fairly likely that you will make more than one in 1/3 of your games. Taking away other decks 1-for-1 plan puts them in a bad position. Making the second GQ a massacre or deluge may be right, but I think the 1x crucible is very strong out of the board for us against certain decks.

Yes, Crucible of Worlds is still good, I would run it! Just the 2nd Ghost Quarter slot could be used for something better like Tabernacle/Combo-hate/Liliana/Steely Resolve
How about a 3rd Not of this world for the STP/Submerge matchups?
I think that settles it for my 15th slot as I run 2 main.
Sideboard
* 4 Sphere
* 3 Surgical
* 1 Charm
* 3 Decay
* 1 Deluge
* 1 Karakas
* 1 Needle
* 1 Not of this World
As for Sphere vs Chalice, I have tested both cards, but feel that sphere is better in a wide open GP meta.
Looks solid. Take down the GP
