You forgot to mention in the slops that my "dad" didn't stick around for some BD's.
Joyous that this tournament included way too many Enchantress decks, Countersliver, and 34landdestruction.dec, who knew?
Printable View
Was a pretty good tournament but the "metagame" was so off the wall it was ridiculous.
There were 4 Stax, 4 Tribal, 4 Enchantress? (I only saw 1) and all kinds of ridiculous stuff. I really felt like I was playing Legacy 4 years ago. :P
Hope to see you all in December.
That land destruction deck was fucking OFF the wall retarded...but still funny to watch him win a few rounds!!!! AGREED.....The META was all fucked up!
I know people were talking about it but would most people be okay with moving the tournament starting time up to Noon?
I know the person running the event said he was going to talk to Mendian about it. Curious to see what people thought.
I for one would prefer an earlier starting time than 1.
Alright Everybody. Here is the Fully anticipated, out of nowhere, Miraculously decent Trainwreck Deck that did "so well."

The Matchups
Round 1 - Justin Brisentine - Firespout Thresh - Team Akron
Game 1
I know ahead of time what Justin is Playing, because he borrowed a Volc off me, and he's my bitch. he wins the dice roll, and starts the game with a fetch, island, ponder. I start with a basic swamp, and nothing else. He Drops Goyf, and I go turn 2 Thoughseize. I take a FoW, due to no blue cards in his hand besides it. He swings for 3, and passes. I drop staff, and pass. He swings, OMG. He drops goyf 2. I rip Pulse, and kill both goyfs, leaving him no creatures. I soon beseech for a coffer, and start drawing and gaining life, while disrupting his hand. I draw into Helldozer, and He doesnt have an answer for it. I Destroy 3 lands, and pass. He plays goyf, and passes. I Chainers edict him and kill his other 2 lands. Scoops
-1 Thoughseize
-1 Hymn
-1 Oona
+2 Garruk
+1 Tsunami
Game 2
I keep an alright hand, and He plays the fetch island ponder thing again. I play nothing, and he drops goyf turn 2, I drop swamp. He swings, Plays goyf 2. I Innocent blood and he sacs one. He swings, and plays trygon predator. I Pulse Goyf, he swings with predator. I Damnation the predator, and drop staff. He counters staff, and F/I and Bolts me and the next turn I Regrowth and play staff. I am at 2. If he draws bolt or F/I, I die, and since he didn't, I didnt die. Staff gets me back up to 7, he casts shaman, and I flashback Edict. He casts sower, and passes. I damnation the sower off the table and cast Sorin Markov. He doesn't give up just yet. I deal him 2 twice, and I top deck haunting Echoes. With all his win conditions gone, and nothing but Grips, lands, dazes and brainstorms, he shakes my hand, and Justin B. is still my bitch.

Round 2 - Reuban (like the sandwich) - Dredge - Columbus Guy
Game 1
I wasn't able to sneek a peak at his deck while he was shuffling, so I had no idea what he was playing. I keep an alright hand that can kill goblins, assuming that was the deck. He mulls to 5, and he finally keeps. I play a swamp, and pass, and he draws, drops LED, and sacs to but two trolls in his GY. Fuck My Life, right? So I go, he dredges, hits 1 bridge, and a naarcomoeba. passes. I Play a land, and kill his Narco, he gets a token. He dredges, hits an ichorid, swings and passes. I drop land 4 and beseech for urborg (Coffer in play). He triggers Ichorid, Dredges, finds narcomoeba. Swings for 5. Done? No.... He Flashes back dread return for Hypnotist, and sacs the 2 zombies and the hypnotist to discard my hand. I go, Draw Urborg (convienent). I pass. He does the dredge thing and swings. Yippee. I lose all hope of winning, and my next card i TD is haunting Echoes. Ill give you a clue... he conceded.
-4 Hymn
-2 Thoughseize
-1 Slaughter pact
-1 Helldozer
+4 Plague
+4 Leyline
Game 2
I mull to 6, looking for Leyline. Pregame Leyline. He plays a mine, imp. I innocent blood it. He plays mine, passes. I play Swamp, pass. He drops CoB, and plays a thug. I dont draw Mana #3. He plays Imp, going full blown aggro on my ass. I dont draw mana #3. I Thoughseize, and he chains leyline in response. needless to say I dont see land 3 and he kills me in 6 turns.
Game 3
I Keep an amazing Hand, have Leyline, and drop it pregame, I Play Urborg, He plays land imp, I blood it off the table, play coffers. He's screwed I think, but dredge has its tricks. I cast Deed turn 3. I Cast Staff of domination turn 4. He reads the card, and sees coffers, and he's like.... "Good game." O now. Whats wrong with this picture. I start talking after the game, and from what I understand, He thought Staff untapped a land? IDK, but it was good news to my ears.
4-1-0
2-0-0
Round 3 - Eric Bettens - Mono White Stax - Little Guy that looked familiar from Columbus
Game 1
Story of my life, the deck I normally play is White Stax.. We both keep, and I play a swamp, and he plays plains. What is this guy playing? I drop a swamp, and he drops Diamond, Diamond, Crucible... I Drop land 3, and he plays Smokestacks. I dont see green for pulse, and he ramps it to one. At this point, I could never get 3 land out, so I just simply give up knowing the mechanics of stax.
-3 Damnation
+1 Grip
+1 Null Brooch
+1 Sorin
Game 2
I keep a hand with Descard. YAY! I take Geddon, and then I hymn lands out of his hand. Factories kickin my ass, but I get staff and start gainin life and drawin cards. I see Helldozer, and start destroying his land. Helldozer kills him. Go Team.
-3 Damnation
-1 Slaughter Pact
+4 Leyline
Game 3
Pretty similar to game 1, but he had the plan going in as crucible will win him the game. Pregame Leyline shut that off really quick. I get some mana going, and he Casts Aura of silence. It doesn't hurt, but it prevents me from playing Staff. He plays Stacks, and I'm lie, shit, hes gonna kill leyline, and lock me out... wrong. He did no such thing, we sac lands and stuff, and finally he sacks stacks. I Play Helldozer, and pass. He does some magic trick and I didnt really pay attention. Upkeep, I kill his factory he's been beating me down with, and another land. I forget to pay magus's upkeep, and I draw, and he points and says "Helldozer Dies!" Points to it, and Im like "Is that what I've been doing to people for the past 3 years! I deserve this." I Play Oona, and pass turn. He sacs magus, and the game soon ends death by big creature. He was a very nice player, and I enjoyed playing him, but his friend was pretty mean and disrespectful on his decisions in the match.
6-2-0
3-0
Round 4 - Gus Schade - Mone White Jitte Weenie Vialgeddon of the Pale Curtain - Team Akron
Game 1
I played Gus the night before in a tournament and I completely Destoryed him, and I knew going into the game there was a very bad chance he could actually beat me. Although he kept me on my toes a lot, I had an answer for everything. I Train Wrectum. Helldozer Killed him
- cards
+ cards
Game 2
I didnt write a lot of notes, because it was like playing Gus, and its always a good match. I remember echoings him, and he geddon'd, and I drew land after land and he didnt. Thats about all I got. I think Sorin Ended it? idk.... dont really care, But that RRRRRRRRRRRRRATZEL Kid needs to get off the couch! Thats for People!
8-2-0
4-0-0
Round 5 - Joseph Hronek - Affinity - "I havent played in X years guy"
Game 1
Friend told me what he was playing, so I was like, "shit.... I have a feeling this is a bad matchup. I keep a hand with 4 land, staff, damnation, etc. He goes, I thoughseize, take plating. He goes, got frog, diciple, worker, drum, land, thopter. I take turn 3. Land go. He plays Enforcer. Ouch. I play land 4 and damnation. He drops master of Etherium, and I cast Coffer, tap, get 6 mana and Innocent blood and Echoes him. Helldozer twice and consume Spirit for 8. Game over (I was at 3 too!).
Side 1 staff for a grip
Game 2
I keep a hand, and say, Fuck it, I have a hymn, slow him down a bit. He plays cards. I play swamp. He plays ravager. 2 cards left, "Go." I hymn master and Enforcer outta his hand. He Swings, draws a Cidatel. I draw Deed. Play deed, he reads it, and says... ok. He plays froggy and swings. I land go, and when he plays his land, he swings, and I deed in response. he had no idea what it did after reading it! I wipe his whole board cept Cidatel, and Play haunting echoes next turn. His deck has Lands, thughtcast, plating, diciple, no drums or black land, but He's not a quitter! I drop Oona turn 6 and Mill his deck and kill him at the same time!
10-2-0
Round 6 - Kojiro (didn't get the name) - Aggro Loam - Team Ass-Hat
Pregame
So I'm sitting there Minding my Own Business, when this Moby lookin guy comes up to me in round 5 and say, "Hey, you retard, Who plays a forest. You'd Have to be a real stupid person to run a Forest. Basic Forests are for n00b's (or something like that)." I told him not to hurt me, I'll give him my lunch money, and I would be happy to split with him, and I can't remember the exact words, but it was something like "I don't want you filthy money, I Murder people that play basic Forests!" So scared for my life, I agreed to play him.
Game 1
I start off by losing the dice roll, and he plays a land. I thoughtseize him, and take KotR, and pass turn. He fetches out a basic Forest, and when he sees the forest, he realizes he plays them too, therefore he murders himself, and it was gruesome.
If you really want the report, go read Queerjiro's on the previous page. He summed it up pretty well.
Thing is, I could have damnationed the turn before the dreams, but I figured... I'm gonna die anyways, I might as well save this for a better time. I half way decided to Slaughter pact turn 2 game one, just to lose turn 3 to get the audience reaction, BUT I stuck it out, and I died.
5-1-0
10-4-0
Everyone wanted to split except for me, until I found out I had to play against RRRRRRRRRatzel, and Trainwreck on burn is like watching a pro athelete at the special olympics swimming. So I was all for splitting for the 100.
Props.
Steve Evans - The Man who turned me to Trainwreck. He had me sold at Gencon, when he placed 13th? either 12th or 13th in the legacy championship.
Haunting Echoes - You are the game winner.
Team Akron - because without you guys, I wouldn't play magic.
Justin Brisentine - Because we play round 1 at every event we participate in together, and you are my Bitch.
Kojiro - For tackling me off the high horse that I was on.
I guess, in hindsight, not making it down there wasn't such a bad idea. Hopefully the MOX JET TOURNAMENT at GET YOUR GAME ON, ANN ARBOR MICHIGAN on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31st at 1 PM (Yeah, Halloween. I don't get it either.) has a better metagame.
This tournament was incredible! The prize pool was an absurd $736!! First place was slated to be about $300!!
We had a full house with 46 players, our second largest tournament yet!!
I will post a full metagame breakdown and Top 8 decklists within the week. Look for it.
Also, we will move the starting time to 12:30PM in the future, and see how that works for folks.
We had a $5 side event that started with the beginning of round six. For next time, I'm going to see if the Soldiery would have a side event paid for as part of the entry fee, with a $40 prize, so that people who drop from the main event can enter a functionally free side event. That would make the whole thing more affordable.
The next Meandeck Open is tentatively scheduled for DECEMBER 27th, 2009! The tournament will start a 12:30. In a few weeks, I'll post an official announcement, but mark your calendars now.
Also, props to everyone who went to BDs. It was delicious. Congrats to all of the folks who made top 8. This tournament was a sick one. It's awesome to see so much competition in Ohio.
Looks like you "wrecked" the competition... bringing that joke back from the tourney. Gah, wanted to beat Merfolk in R5 so I'd get closer to playing you, but didn't realize you were 5-0 at that point (rumors had you at 4-1).
Aww, 46. Really close to the goal of 50+ for this one.
I'm down for 12:30, and it made sense for the date of the next one. Will be interesting to see what the metagame breakdown looks like and how way off I was in my pregame reads (thus leading to a horrible SB'ing plan. Thanks, overthinking). $5 side event is great too with the entry fee, I would have dropped at that point for it if that was the case. Anyhow, gives me 2 months to tweak/test.
I'll be waiting for you with Academy + EE for next time
It's really a shame because my deck really seemed strong against all the establish decks and performed how I wanted it to, but then I played against "fair" decks. :(
AGREED...I don't think it went down like that at all Bobby!!!!!:eyebrow:
HAHAHAHA I fuckin' love all the RRRRATZEL references, I'm surprised no one asked us to stop
For those interested, my white weenie list was as follows ...
MAINDECK
4 Mother of Runes
4 Silver Knight
4 Serra Avenger
4 Samurai of the Pale Curtain
3 Jötun Grunt
3 Soltari Priest
4 Swords to Plowshares
4 Harm's Way
3 Umezawa's Jitte
3 AEther Vial
2 Oblivion Ring
2 Ravages of War
1 Armageddon
4 Wasteland
3 Flagstones of Trokair
13 Plains
SIDEBOARD
4 Pithing Needle
2 Relic of Progenitus
3 True Believer
3 Patrician's Scorn
2 Cataclysm
1 Oblivion Ring
No, I didn't play shitty 1 mana 2/1's or 2/2's, those suck, they don't do anything.
No, I didn't play Path to Exile, Harm's Way is usually better, barring matchups like Dreadstill.
No, I didn't play other Equipment, Jitte + Creature = Win
Yes, it is 61 cards, fucking live with it, it works.
My opponents were:
Round 1 - Merfolk (no goyf)
Round 2 - Zoo
Round 3 - Tempo Thresh (Ben W, I was his only loss all day)
Round 4 - Trainwreck (I got rolled, even through a total of 3 land wipes and a cataclysm)
Round 5 - Stax
Round 6 - ID with Ninjas
Top 8 - Split with Fae Stompy opponent
Beat Merfs 2-1 - Eric's Friend
G1: Rode to victory on the back of Serra Avenger and a Swords to Plowshares or two.
G2: Was real close, then be barfed too many to keep up and I couldn't draw Cataclysm.
G3: Turn 1 Vial. Vial poops out 2 Silver Knights and a Soltari Priest, while I StP a Wake Thrasher TWICE (FoW on #1) then proceed to draw 3x Harm's Way in a row.
Beat Zoo 2-1 - Mark's Dad
G1: VICTORY WITH A COMBO! What? Combo? White Weenie? Yep, Soltari Priest + Jitte = WIN!
G2: Was so close, got Jitte active, was at 9 and then Chain Lightning x2 + Fireblast :O
G3: Mother of Runes makes combat take SO much longer, then you gotta factor in Harm's Way as well :D, but I keep the heat off for long enough to stick Jitte and Survive.
Beat Tempo Thresh 2-0 - Ben Weinberg
G1: I pretty much get a bunch of stuff countered, then my guys start sticking and I win.
G2: WHAT A MATCH! WOW.
Back and forth and back and forth, Mommies, pro-red Guys, his gooses/goyfs.
He sends out a goose to make the final swing for lethal, 1 Goyf, 3 Mongoose, and a Needle on Jitte. I Cataclysm.
I keep Mother of Runes + Jitte and a Plains and my O-Ring on his first Needle (naming Mom)
Standoff for a while and then I get a Soltari Priest to stick when he was at 16.
Priest starts attacking, Mom keeps blocking, I'm at 6 and he Fire/Ices my mom and myself, and then he hits me with Goose putting me at 2.
We are both at 4-5 lands again. I Ravages of War with an open plains, it lands.
I get him to 3 (he fetched before ravages) and he draws a Delta.
I get him to 1 and THEN he draws Lightning Bolt. What a game.
Great plays on that game, we both played pretty darn tightly.
Got Trainwrecked Round 4 :( - Bobby (onebigsquirrelgod)
I play guys, he plays anti-that. I lose.
Beat Stax 2-0 - Purple Shirt guy
G1: He turn one Chalices for one, ouch. I play Samurai of the Pale Curtain, I play Jitte, I start bashing.
He plays a Flagstone to trigger our legendary rule and picks up his deck, I say no, Samurai removes them. Ow.
Samurai brings it home.
G2: Same deal actually, Samurai and Jitte.
He kills Samurai, and I land Grunt. Grunt does it's damage and he takes it out too, then 'geddons.
I vial a grunt in on the on the end of his turn, we both have 2 cards in yard.
I equip Jitte, remove counters and swing for 8, putting him at 4.
He takes his turn and looks at the board, my Jötun Grunt with one age counter on it and 2 cards total in yards.
He must have missed that detail and holds out his hand for the concession shake. *phew*
Split with Max round 6
Split Top 8 for money and head to bd's!
What a fun tourney, White Weenie is the most fun deck in Legacy.
PROPS:
My friend, VINCE DIOCEDO for creating this core list over the years and tightening it up so well.
My other friend, BOBBY KOVACS, for lending me most about 85% of the deck.
My other other friend, JOHN PRYOR, for lending me 1 Alpha StP, 3 Jittes, and 3 Vials!
Harm's Way and Cataclysm, what amazing underrated cards!
Everyone there! Lets make the next one bigger!
Dragonshield, for making BROWN sleeves!
Ravages of War, for being there for when someone names 'geddon with Meddling Mage/Therapy (it happens, trust me)
RRRRRRRATZEL for his awesome name, and AUDACITY to play Burn XD
Noah, for driving our asses out there and stopping at Steak and Shake.
The Anticon label, for having such awesome music to listen to on the way there.
SLOPS:
NO THREATENER, WHAT THE FUCK. Someone better have his address ...
Pretty Sleeves being $5, not $4
RRRRRRRATZEL for bumping Vince out of Top8. GET OUT OF THAT DAMN TOP 8, THAT'S FOR PEOPLE!
The Speedway we stopped at had NO BAWLS, OMFG.
The two combo players there that didn't make top 8 in a meta filled with aggro decks, I mean DAMN Belcher got beat out of Top 8 by ZOO!
Wow, Pat, I actually wish I was a part of this epic fail. It is a good story.
Top 8 decklists AND Complete Metagame Breakdown have been posted:
http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/s...812#post395812
The metagame was actually very normal, with Canadian Thresh, Merfolk, Zoo, Goblins, and CounterTopGoyf as the most popular archetypes. The only unusual thing was the top 8!
Hey Steve, in case it matters, I don't think I can make it down to Columbus December 27th.
We need someone to tell us who everyone is -- it's hard to tell with all of these handles :p
