Nostalgia, jeez.
Love it.

I'm coming off D&T and still putting the deck together (missing Rhinos right now) and I just had a stray thought:
Could including [card]Dust Bowl[/card] justify playing Knight of the Reliquary? Or is it just not what the deck ever wants to be doing?
Elspeth is MIGHTY good in this deck. Some times, I'm sure some of you have found, you're threat light and pooping tokens is amazing. Or, boosting something to get in. I really like her. Played with her against Miracles and she was a tank. Might cut the Safekeeper for a second, but not sure. Might go back to Rec Sage instead of Safekeeper. Always and forever testing.

Dumb question for the gang here...how viable is this list with some tweaks? http://www.tcdecks.net/deck.php?id=15532&iddeck=115551
Some pages back, people were complaining about Titania. Perhaps running Sun or Primeval Titan in that slot? Perhaps Sigarda? Perhaps Elspeth? I really like the shell this list puts together. Toxic in the main seems so good as well. Sideboard I have a different approach.
When you're not playing Deeds, all bets are off. You have a lot more room to do basically whatever you want.
First, Swords becomes Paths. I like Sylvan over Top because a lot of the times, our life total can be way over 20. Wurmcoil seems interesting, but I don't think any lists should leave home without Thrun and Sigarda.

as a possible 1 of in the junk list, or 1 of in the board.
2 mana is a good manacost, but I'm not sure about the modes. Give it a test and see :)
Elspeth has been good, so I'm going to try Garruk Relentless in her place just to compare. I feel like he's going to be easier to cast, he's pseudo-removal against a blocker, he poops 2/2 tokens, and has the tutor ability for getting Sigarda, Thrun, etc. A bit weaker in the black matchups due to dying to Decay, but we're trying to think more about the white-based decks since those are going to be more of the problem.

So uh, being in the process of selling my mtg collection and all, I have been forced off blue decks. Sleeved Junk fit for the millionth time and finally played it again. Went 3-1 beating Team america, affinity, and patriot, and losing to uw control. I couldn't handle multiple council's judgments and jaces. On the upside, courser of kruphix was amazing all evening and the single siege rhino successfully replaced thragtusk in my book. Anyway, here's what I played:
1 Dryad Arbor
1 Veteran Explorer
4 Deathrite Shaman
3 Stoneforge Mystic
1 Gaddock Teeg
1 Qasali Pridemage
1 Eternal Witness
1 Courser of Kruphix
1 Siege Rhino
1 Sigarda, Host of Herons
2 Swords to Plowshares
4 Abrupt Decay
4 Thoughtseize
4 Cabal Therapy
4 Green Sun's Zenith
1 Umezawa's Jitte
1 Batterskull
1 Sylvan Library
4 Liliana of the Veil
4 Verdant Catacombs
4 Windswept Heath
2 Marsh Flats
2 Bayou
2 Scrubland
1 Savannah
2 Forest
2 Swamp
1 Plains
//SB
2 Toxic Deluge
2 Duress
2 Surgical Extraction
2 Swords to Plowshares
1 Enlightened Tutor
1 Pithing Needle
1 Sword of Fire and Ice
1 Ethersworn Canonist
1 Spirit of the Labyrinth
1 Rest in Peace
1 Choke
Taking out the 4th SFM was definitely a mistake. Perhaps Witness or a Marsh flat will bite the dust.
Pridemage was fine but I still don't know if its better than Rec sage. I do appreciate exalted as a GSZ possibility though.
The SB packs too much removal...
And PtE is still garbage. Terrible card against Elves, Burn, DnT, Merfolk, Goblins, Shardless BUG, Jund, Junk, Maverick, and so much more. Actually, nevermind all that, we can't let the delver decks gain life against our control deck.
Elspeth and Garruk both synergize well with Recurring Nightmare. I find my Junk list to be a tad creature light, so the token production could allow some nasty Nightmare tricks.
Even if it's just to produce tokens to either harass Jace, clog the board, etc. it's also pretty good. Plus, sacrificing a Vet to Garruk Relentless to grab a Siege Rhino seems excellent.

Harsh words, but through testing, I've found it to be more than fine. Most decks run out of basics or don't have any when you fire it off, and for some decks, I literally don't care if they get a land. It's not like I'm keeping this in against Miracles or something. You're more than welcome to run STP, but also recall that you're not running 4 Rhinos, so results WILL vary. Hell, you're only running one Veteran Explorer. You're essentially running a more controlling Junk or Maverick deck. Nothing wrong with that.Quote:

Have you considered Lingering Souls? You're running 4 Therapy and 4 Liliana - the tokens are nice to sac, and the Souls are nice cards to discard.

A friend suggested running 3 Choke in the Carpet of Flowers slot since it would be better against Miracles. Carpet isn't something Miracles fears, but it does allow us to accelerate threats out and try to compete by putting the pressure on. Obviously Choke is no slouch against Delver, either. Might be worth testing just to see, even if Carpet is an amazing card. I've had quite a bit of success with it, so we'll see.
This is what I'll be playing this weekend, most likely:
4 Veteran Explorer
1 Deathrite Shaman
4 Siege Rhino
1 Sigarda, Host of Herons
1 Thrun, the Last Troll
1 Sylvan Safekeeper
1 Scavenging Ooze
1 Eternal Witness
3 Path to Exile
3 Abrupt Decay
3 Pernicious Deed
1 Maelstrom Pulse
4 Cabal Therapy
4 Green Sun's Zenith
3 Sensei's Divining Top
1 Recurring Nightmare
1 Diabolic Intent
1 Garruk Relentless
1 Volrath's Stronghold
1 Karakas
1 Phyrexian Tower
2 Windswept Heath
1 Marsh Flats
4 Verdant Catacombs
2 Bayou
2 Savannah
1 Scrubland
3 Forest
3 Swamp
2 Plains
--BOARD--
2 Gaddock Teeg
3 Carpet of Flowers
1 Surgical Extraction
1 Extirpate
3 Thoughtseize
1 Toxic Deluge
1 Golgari Charm
2 Cranial Extraction
1 Krosan Grip

My list is very close to this, however I have a toxic deluge and 2 garruk main.
Question for Matt... If Deathrite is so good in the early, mid, and late game, then why only run 1-2? I've run 4 since I started playing the deck and he is always a helper (when he doesn't eat a StP or Bolt first).

Deathrite is good no question about that but once the deck is rolling you want something a little beefier to close the game out. Playing eight one mana ramp creatures is a misuse of incredibly tight space. 3-2 or 4-1 is where you want to be the deck only has room for five. Those other three slots should always be some form of interaction or high impact threats.
3 vetex/4 drs. I swear by it. 3 vet because multiples become shitty and hes not always what you want to see in every MU. With 3 Carpets on the board you can switch without loss very easily. 4 drs because he tends to die quick, but always shows up again so hes no loss. Plus that removal is wasted drs instead of somsthing else say a STP on DRS instead of Vet. Also the mana ramp, life gain and/or life loss are good. Sometimes he tends to be i bit small or have little effect, but he ensures flexibility, ramp and pressure. Also getting mana screw with this deck is the most shiity thing. 3/4 split ensures it doesnt happen that often.
I love Deathrite to death, but, the room in this deck is so tight. I feel there are certain cows you can't cut. Veteran, Sigarda, Thrun, Witness, and Scooze. Siege Rhino is the reason to be playing Junk (not the full reason, but stay with me).
You need to have Tops, GSZ, Therapies, and various removal. The only slots you can truly play with are: How many Rhinos you want to play, the Thragtusk slot, and the Recurring Nightmare, Maelstrom Pulse, Diabolic Intent, and Garruk slots. That leaves you with 5 slots not including playing around with Rhino, and assuming you only run 3 Top. If you cut a land to go to 22, you get your 4 Tops, fine. But, with Deeds in the deck constantly blowing out the world for X<4, how many Deathrites of my own do I want to die? I feel like at times, you want to "overextend" on board to force your opponent to try to gain parity, then you blow them the fuck out with Deed. I feel like for this reason, smaller creatures like Deathrite and cards like Sylvan Library can be, at times, liabilities to your gameplan.
In addition, I feel like if you're going to play Rhino, you should play 4, but 3 is also "probably" fine. The random 1-of slots also do heavy duty like killing Jace, tutoring for key pieces, and are generally extremely powerful, but some would argue situational. You could cut raw power for consistency, and I would say Deathrite would be right up there on the list. I have just been loving the power level so much that I haven't found Deathrites, at least 3-4 copies, necessary. I could easily see cutting 1 of them to put the DRS count to 2. That I would fully support.
You also do have Carpet out of the board to help compensate for either Vets coming out, or for MORE acceleration. I just feel at some point you may have some many pieces of acceleration and nothing to actually ramp INTO.
It's really up to you how many you want to play. I'd never cut the 1 I have, but I could be persuaded to up to 2. I think once you're at 3 and 4, you lose some of the other business you do want to have available in the deck. Just my two cents.
-Matt
You could do something cute & silly along the lines of running a Fierce Empath to GSZ for a Tasigur, the Golden Fang and abuse the shit out of its ability. I lol'd my ass off when I forced my opponent to give me back a Plow after I'd reduced his board to a lonely Goyf. It's a nice mana sink that helps you pull ahead after you're done ramping.
