- Either deck should play Terminus, in my opinion. Scroll Rack would be nice here as a way to get Terminus out of your hand.
- If I were to add Land Tax, I think Zuran Orb is clever. Our deck struggles to really fast damage, like Burn or Delver, and Orb lets us battle that while playing well with Land Tax.
- Solitary Confinement is an interesting thought. As mentioned in the Parfait thread, at worst it's frequently a 2W Time Walk. I'll say, though, that having played Enchantress for the past 3 months, Solitary can be very hard to play correctly.
- I LOVE the idea of Charbelcher. Dunno if I'd play it, but that would throw so many people off their game . . .
- Ultimately, I think a hybrid between the two decks could be good. I'm still new to Quinn, but I feel like the snow engine isn't that important to the deck. Sure, it's nice for filtering if the game goes long, but there are lots of short/medium length games where a Scrying Sheets is significantly worse than a Plains. If you cut that, you could start moving more and more into Parfait territory and arriving at a more optimized Mono-W control deck, which has some good potential right now.
This is what I am working on now.
Land (24)
15 Snow-covered Plains
3 Arid Mesa
3 Scrying Sheets
1 Mouth of Ronom
1 Darksteel Citadel
1 Kor Haven
Creature (2)
2 Ethersworn Cannonist
Instant (13)
4 Swords to Plowshares
3 Enlightened Tutors
2 Orim's Chant
2 Unexpectedly Absent
2 Warping Wail
Sorcery (5)
2 Terminus
2 Council's Judgment
1 Wrath of God
Artifact (11)
4 Sensei's Divining Top
2 Helm of Obedience
2 Isochron Scepter
2 Ensnaring Bridge
1 Pithing Needle
Enchantment (4)
3 Rest in Peace
1 Humility
Plainswalker (1)
1 Elspeth, Knight-Errant
I agree that the snow engine is not that important to the deck. It can provide card advantage in the late game with the help of SDT. In order to hit a snow card on a regular basis you need 25 snow cards in your deck which we don't have. Back in the day we ran Adarkar Valkyrie to add to our snow count and function as a win con but better cards have been printed since then. If we are looking at dropping the Scrying Sheets then Wasteland might not be a bad choice. It gives us another way to interact with our opponents and if our non basic lands are going to get wasted anyways. Why not? I do like the idea of Darksteel Citadel. It is tutorable with E Tutor, plays around Wasteland and taps for colorless.
At the end of the day yes this is an old deck from a day and age when legacy was full of decks like slivers, goblins, merfolk. There have been a lot of cards add and a lot of shifts in the meta since then. We try and stay current as best we can. It can be the right deck. Like I said I look forward to seeing where the deck goes.

Re: [Deck] Quinn The Eskimo- Aka, The Mighty Quinn
Ordered 'all' the card for Quinn, trying to make a good mixture of all the info I got here.
One thing I'm wondering, why Elspeth over Gideon? The only advantage I see is that Elspeth is better with Humility on the table and her ultimate, other than that, Gideon provides a much faster clock with his 2/2 tokens and his +1 (or ulti with tokens on the field)

The Elspeth ultimate isn't trivial, given the amount of board states you get where you and your opponent are just staring at one another. Her other +1 giving your man flying also plays well with Moat.
@WarpWorld: any consideration for Dust Bowl if you're adding in other utility lands? I think there comes a point where you don't need more lands and there's no scroll rack here to put unneeded lands back like you'd see in parfait (and also no shuffler as reliable as Land Tax)

Re: [Deck] Quinn The Eskimo- Aka, The Mighty Quinn
2 Isochron Scepter
1 Abeyance
3 Orim's Chant
1 Warping Wail
3 Rest in Peace
2 Helm of Obedience
1 Elspeth, Knight-Errant
3 Sensei's Divining Top
4 Enlightened Tutor
4 Swords to Plowshares
2 Council's Judgment
2 Terminus
1 wrath of god
1 Humility
2 Ensnaring Bridge
1 Oblivion Ring
1 Pithing Needle
1 Leyline of Sanctity
14 Snow-Covered Plains
4 Scrying Sheets
2 Arid Mesa
2 Windswepth Heath
2 Kor Haven
1 Karakas
This is the list I have been testing, there were 2 Unexpected Absents in the list, but they were underwelming if the opponent didn't fetch. Maybe in the sideboard. Placed 1 Warping Wail in place and an Pithing Needle. The Warping Wail is a very good card, but I only have 6 lands that can produce colorless mana.
Thinking of adding an extra utility land (also for warping wail), but our snow count is already low to get the engine going. Btw, the 4 fetches + 4 tutors + top is a great alternative if you can't get the snow engine to work.
Might add a Dust Bowl. Good suggestion.
Card that hasn't show much work was Terminus, but that was mostly because I got it in my start hand a couple of times, or drew it (without top) at times there were no creatures at the board. But maybe also a bit of bad luck.
Anyways, the deck is an absolute blast to play (not necessarely for my opponents, who know call my type of decks I play 'a plague of hemorrhoids') So I might name it "Frozen Hemmorrhoids" or something like that, in case that it gets in a top 8 ;-)
I am planning to take this deck to the next GP, so it needs more thinkering and a good sideboard. Will post my new sideboard in a couple of days.
@WarpWorld, care to share yours?
EDIT: btw, the problem I find with the utility lands, you can't tutor for them. And I might include (first in sideboard, maybe in MD) Genju of the Fields. It's a 'recurrable' enchantment (so tutorable) that will still work under a humility, will keep us alive, help us against burn/aggro decks, "can't" be bolted, abrupt decayed and if it gets a STP, it just comes back. Plus it might be another wincon.
-
Re: [Deck] Quinn The Eskimo- Aka, The Mighty Quinn
Thanks for sharing the list, Xod! Looks solid, with a lot of answers and flexibility. My only concern is your win cons. I've lost my fair share of games by hitting a win con quickly enough, therby giving my opponent time to recover control of the board. 3 RIP and 2 Helm is running a bit tight, and I've never seen Elspeth actually win a game. If you can find room, maybe try bumping up to 4 RIP and 3 Helm.

I played 2 Warping Wail with 7 colorless sources, and it was always stuck in my hand when I wanted it. Let us know how it plays out for you, though.

Re: [Deck] Quinn The Eskimo- Aka, The Mighty Quinn
@ Dust Bowl I played it back pre Land Tax and I remember it being slow and only good in the late game. It lent me to playing Crucible of Worlds to guard against Wasteland and the strain it put on the mana base. I found the cost of 3 mana to much and eventually cut it. If you wanna give it a go I would recommend adding a Land Tax and Crucible of Worlds a spin. I think Wasteland is a better choice.
I did test 2 Expedition Map with this mana base:
13 Snow-covered Plains
1 Snow-covered Mountain
3 Arid Mesa
3 Wasteland
1 Plateau
1 Scrying Sheets
1 Mouth of Ronom
1 Kor Haven
The Wastelands felt more like spells as playing one and sacrificing it early ment you couldn't cast something else or you got priced in to holding it up. As I have dropped the red I might revisit this with things like Maze of Ith.
As for utility lands I think Darksteel Citadel has been one of the best. It is tutorable with Enlightened Tutor if you find yourself short on mana and it gets around Wasteland by being indestructible. It also taps for <> which is nice for Warping Wail.
Genju of the Fields is cute but they can still Abrupt Decay the enchantment itself and it won't go back to your hand unless the land dies that turn as well. I might try 1 or 2 in the board for non Decay matchups.
@Xod we are close on our MD. Mine for reference:
Land (24)
14 Snow-covered Plains
4 Arid Mesa
3 Scrying Sheets
1 Mouth of Ronom
1 Kor Haven
1 Darksteel Citadel
Instant (13)
4 Swords to Plowshares
4 Enlightened Tutors
3 Orim's Chant
2 Warping Wail
Sorcery (5)
2 Council's Judgment
2 Terminus
1 Wrath of God
Artifact (11)
4 Sensei's Divining Top
2 Ensnaring Bridge
2 Helm of Obedience
2 Isochron Scepter
1 Pithing Needle
Enchantment (6)
4 Rest in Peace
2 Humility
Plainswalker (1)
1 Elspeth, Knight-Errant
Sideboard (15)
4 Leyline of Sanctity
4 Ethersworn Cannonist
1 Ensnaring Bridge
1 Aegis of Honor
1 Elixir of Immortality
1 Path to Exile
3 flex spots.
I was running 1 Snow-covered Mountain and 2 Wear // Tear but it is to cute. I might try genju to see how he fits. Other than that I am up for ideas and suggestions.

Re: [Deck] Quinn The Eskimo- Aka, The Mighty Quinn
I understand that the Dust Bowl is too slow (it worked in a stax/stompy shell), you need 3 mana + Dust Bowl. And it sets you back, because you need 4 to 5 mana easily.
What I don't understand is the Mouth or Ronom. There you need 5 mana + Mouth. Did it already help? Because after 6 turns to answer a creature you didn't have in place (humility/Bridge) or exiled/destroyed, you can easily be dead.
Kor Haven has been wonderful so far. It kept a Knight in place, stopped a single delver in his place until I could play a wrath. Plus it generates mana (something you can't say about Maze of Ith) sure it costs you 3 mana to keep 1 creature in place, but when you don't need to, it provides you the mana you need.
Other than that, I like the Path to Exile in SB, might add that as well. The Aegis of Honor, only looks good against burn and even then, you got your leylines and it does nothing against creatures. (maybe I'm overlooking something)
How has the Elixir of Immortality been going? I understand that it can keep you alive or provide the needed stall effect, turn 1 playing a tutor, turn 2 playing a elixir and turn 3 activation the exlixir to get it and the tutor back. But if you land a RIP, isn't it just 5 lifes for 3 mana? (that recurs) Timely can almost do the same (and give more) Sure if RIP gets removed, you can get RIP or other pieces back. Against what decks do you board it in? Might even be good against lands to take one hit from Marit Lage :-)
I have one Pulse of the Fields against Burn and aggro decks, so far I haven't been able to use it, but it looks solid.
For miracles I have 2 Ray of Distortion and 2 Aura of Silence. I'm also planning to play one or two Properphy Nodes in the SB, for those aggro matchups, and/or maybe against Eldrazi (if I can land it with CotV)
I was thinking about the darksteel citadel, and at one point I was really wishing I had one in my deck because I was tight on mana and I had a tutor. But I needed a second white mana, and my deck runs 25 lands, if you're tight on mana, you will draw lands.
The win cons are indeed a bit tight, and I needed my 3 RIP's and 2 Helms to take the win against a BUG player. So I might change that one Warping Wail for another RIP or Helm. (although that warping wail saved the day against that BUG player, by keeping Lilly in place while I found an answer and chump blocker later under humility)

Mouth of Ronom could be Sheets number 4 or Kor Haven number 2 but I don't like lowering the already low snow count. It is slow and 4 damage isn't what it used to be before Tasigur and Angler hit the scene and most recently Smasher. I will most likely be swapping it out for something else.
Elixir of Immortality has been good for me. I like it against burn or other decks where my life total could get low. It reshuffles which is nice. I have thought about it having it in the main. I can't knock* Pulse of the Fields I couldn't find one way back when and haven't looked back. I also like Aegis of Honor in the red matchups to shut down spells at a low cost. It sort of acts like Leyline of Sanctity number 5 that ckmes down turn 1 and also protects our permanents like Cannonist, Elspeth or tokens from spells as they are the next best thing after our life total.
I don't like Ray of Distortion. It has yet to ever be effective in the miracles matchup for me. I might have been playing it wrong because it looks good on paper but they always seem to keep a 4 around after they have seen it. I do like Aura of Silence and could see a 2-1 split of Aura / Node. Porphyry Nodes has been tested before with mixed results. I agree about its uses. Maybe on the play versus Chalice but not on the draw.
Lands is an easy matchup for us. Rest in Peace does most of the work game 1 and we have Swords to Plowshares and Ensnaring Bridge to stop the Marit Lage token. Games 2 and 3 can be a bit more trickery as they have k. grips or decays but we should still be favored overall.
I am going to run with a Darksteel Citadel for a while and see how it goes. I have had a few games were I wished my E. Tutor could get a land so I am going to give it a try. The mana in the deck is tight and missing land drops hurts when we are trying to cast 4 mana spells.

Re: [Deck] Quinn The Eskimo- Aka, The Mighty Quinn
Well...0-3 drop. My new magic goal is to win a tournament match played in the country I've lived in since September (yes 1 match...). I'm not sure if I'll be able to accomplish this with Quinn though...but I'm willing to try at least once more. My list is in the previous post.
0-2 UWr miracles. Tough match is tough.
1-2 Goblin Stompy. He played goblin rabble master turn 1 on the play. Game 3 he has turn 1 chalice on the play which wrecks me.
1-2 Canadian thresh. Stabilized both games I lost. Lost to 4 bolts game 2 and couldn't end the game in time game 3.
I feel like I probably durdled too much...but I think I might swap out the scepter package for sfm again. I felt like I wanted to be more aggressive and there doesn't seem to be much combo.
-
Re: [Deck] Quinn The Eskimo- Aka, The Mighty Quinn
3-1! I redeemed myself kind of. I lost to goblin stompy again though...i don't get it. Apparently I roll over to turn 1 chalice turn 2 rabblemaster. Md is the same but changed up the sb a bit. I don't like my sb very much.
Edit: Seriously considering removing the md canonist for another wincon like elspeth 2 or one of those fetchable enchantments.
0-2 Goblin Stompy (different guy as last week)
2-1 UW Miracles (same guy)
2-0 Deadguy Ale
2-0 Stoneblade
16x snow plains
4x scrying sheets
1x desert
1x ancient den
4 top
3 e tutor
Protection: 20
4 swords
4 oblivion ring
2 ensnaring bridge
1 humility
1 runed halo
1 pithing needle
2 isochron scepter
3 orim's chant
2 abeyance
1 porphyry nodes
Combo: 8
4 rest in peace
4 helm of obedience
Creature Package: 2
1 ethersworn canonist
1 elspeth, knight errant
SB:
3 terminus
3 leyline of sanctity
2 ray of distortion
1 humility
1 never more
1 path to exile
1 ethersworn canonist
1 pithing needle
1 disenchant
1 mindbreak trap

Re: [Deck] Quinn The Eskimo- Aka, The Mighty Quinn
Nice work! I've found Miracles to be a tough match, so I'm impressed you got there. Likewise, Stompy has been funny for me. I'm 1-2 against it, though it feels like it should be a pushover for us. On the other hand, Chalice shuts off a lot of our answers (especially if it comes down before Top), and Rabblemaster is an insane clock.
Re. win cons: I'm trying out 2 Baneslayer Angel in the slot where Elspeth is. Elspeth has been underwhelming, and Baneslayer is pretty solid against fair decks. Something worth considering if you're trying to end games faster.
Keep us posted on your development with the deck. I'm planning on taking it for a spin this week myself; I'll try to post the results here.
-
Re: [Deck] Quinn The Eskimo- Aka, The Mighty Quinn
Yeah I need to change my curve a bit at least in the sb as to not roll over to chalice at 1. Miracles is awful especially if they have r for wear//tear. Chant/abeyance/oring/pithing needle (preemptively on jace to avoid CB) are strong, so are elspeth type win cons which makes me want to go up to 2-3.
I don't have moat and consider ensnaring bridge to be the best protection card in the deck which unfortunately clashes with bane slayer.

Hey Kinda glad to see you had a better than 0-x finish with the deck. How is the Disenchant in the board? When do you bring it in? I feel a 2 cmc answer is bad against CB but ok against Chalice. Or am I seeing it wrong?
I do like the idea of Baneslayer Angel but I agree that Ensnaring Bridge is the best line of defense against opposing creatures. I have owned and played with Moat and I found that to many things flew over the top. That being said it is a beast with Humility and Elspeth. Even still I am looking at something like Batterskull as another way to close out games but that lends itself to SFM and I feel that might be a lot of space.
I haven't seen Chalice that much yet but my curve feels bad with 16 1cmc cards. I can understand how it is a beating. The curve could probably use some work.
-
Re: [Deck] Quinn The Eskimo- Aka, The Mighty Quinn
Yeah it is for chalice mostly. I played 3 sfm, baterskull, and sofi in the deck for a while...it wasnt bad.
-
Re: [Deck] Quinn The Eskimo- Aka, The Mighty Quinn
Well...0-3 drop this week. 0-2 UWr landstill, 1-2 ANT, 1-2 goblin stompy. All quite poor matchups so I don't plan on changing much. Overall though I do want to increase ways to win in my list. Apparently I play goblin stompy every week and lose to it. This week I lost two games to koth, before it was chalice+rabblemaster. Only change I made was swapping the md canonist for a sb leyline. With dig banned and most ant lists g1 scooping to runed halo on tendrils I don't see any need for it in the main. Anyone brave enough to run Quinn in Prague?
-
Re: [Deck] Quinn The Eskimo- Aka, The Mighty Quinn
Anyone have an updated list to cope with this very chalice full meta?

Re: [Deck] Quinn The Eskimo- Aka, The Mighty Quinn (Snow Parfait)
I've been tinkering with a list featuring Blood Moon for more than a year now. I consider the deck a successor to my old Quinn deck (it's still top's, tutors and bullets after all), although I guess you could argue it no longer qualifies since I'm not running the Scrying Sheets/snow plains engine.
Anyway, I made the semifinals of our local event past weekend, and someone else already picked up on the list, so for those who are interested: http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=30807.
As a sidenote, I've been off scepter/chant for quite a while now, since so many decks have a way to break up the lock these days (stupid abrupt decay). I think getting rid of the chants is the first step towards making the deck less susceptible to Chalice of the Void.
-
Re: [Deck] Quinn The Eskimo- Aka, The Mighty Quinn
Nahiri looks like it would be bonkers with the scrying sheets engine. I might test 3 scrying sheets, 14 snow plains, 4 arid Mesa, 2 snow mountain, 1 plateau. I always missed fetches with top and blood moon is a sweet tutor target.
