Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Don't worry about that ringo; this is a imperial painter thread (mono R/ shortcake variant) discussions of other archetypes need to happen on either the specific thread or perhaps in a developing/brewing thread. We would love to help you out Joef but we just don't want that conversation here.
For those going to Indy make sure to sleep tonight, so no late night parties and cramming. The weather will be chilly 30's with little to no snowfall. There will be no repeat of last year. Good luck have fun and drive/fly safe. See you there Saturday morning.
-
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Safe travels everyone. This drive will be cake compared to the ridiculous drive to gp new jersey last year!
I'll be getting there this evening. Hope some of us bump into each other. I'll post the list I'm bringing once I hit the road.

Ever since I switched to first shift I feel like an old man. I'll be surprised if I make it to 8:30 without passing out.

2 x Bloodstained Mire
1 x Swamp
1 x Island
1 x Volrath's Stronghold (bring painters back)
Spells
4 x Lion's Eye Diamond (sac to tutor or 2nd turn win)
4 x Grindstone
4 x Painter's Servant
1 x Sensei's Divining Top
4 x Force of Will
4 x Brainstorm
4 x Ponder
3 x Gitaxian Probe (check to see if they have counter)

3 x Thoughtseize (check to see if they have counter... and remove counter)
3 x Infernal Tutor
Thoughts? Suggestions?
I Did have trinket mage in here but the intuition's and tutors seem enough.
I would suggest the same thing. I will just comment by saying that the black seems unnecessary in the deck. If you are using infernal tutor to grab something then you are all in by either having an empty hand or cracking LED to empty your hand. This makes counterspells terrible. You should look at the blue/red welder/painter builds. They seem to fit what you are trying to do much better. There was a top 8 finish at SCG Minneapolis a few months ago that you could reference.

So your telling me there's a chance...
That painter mirror was fun to watch for sure!

Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Yeah, managed to go 5-4 and throw away my day 2 ticket by playing some of the worst magic I've ever played in the last round. I was pretty disappointed with my play today. Oh well, Modern tomorrow.
-
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Did awful today too. went 2-4 drop and losing 2 close game 3s against UWR delver and DnT to both well timed wastelands. I did beat Burn and BUG delver.
Its a shame but what can you do. Still love painter and still hate playing against DnT.

Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I find playing against dnt not that bad personally but I've also had the opportunity to test it a lot. 4 players at my lgs
-
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
So after this weekend I feel like canonist in main should go back to revoker. Revoker works well in so many match ups and does ok in others. Where as canonist does amazing in a select few matches and almost nothing in others.

Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Shortcake (as of 2/1/2014)
4 Ancient Tomb
3 City of Traitors
1 Great Furnace
5 Red Fetches
4 Mountain
2 plateau
4 Imperial Recruiter
4 Painter's Servant
3 Goblin Welder
2 Simian Spirit Guide
1 Magus of the Moon
1 Jaya Ballard, Task Mage
4 Blood Moon
4 Grindstone
3 Lotus Petal
2 Sensei's Divining Top
1 engineered explosives
4 Pyroblast
3 Red Elemental Blast
3 enlightened tutor
2 ensnaring bridge
The board
4 Firebolt
2 Pyroclasm
1 Tormod's Crypt
1 Rest in Peace
1 trinisphere
1 thorn of amethyst
1 Ethersworn Canonist
1 Ensnaring Bridge
1 Duergar hedge-mage
1 Daretti, Scrap Savant
1 koth
This is where I'm at now. I chose to handle creature and blue decks with the main and hoping for variance in the combo match. Bridges and pyros for the dnt and elves. Plus beating miracles with koth. Going to run this for 100 matches. I'll report back later.

Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Kapn: Is there any videos of you playing Shortcake on youtube or Twitch I can watch to get a feel for how you pilot the deck? I have not had great success with the deck even after reading the thread twice over... or is there any streamer you would suggest watching?

No Phyrexian Revoker anywhere in the 75? He's been a catch-all answer for me for such a long time that I can't imagine playing without one main and another side.

Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Revoker, blast 8, and assemble are my 76-78 right now. I agree revoker is great, but considering how creature saturated the field is (elves, dnt, all delver, leftover pyros) I think pyroclasm may be better. Not to mention most decks where revoker really shines should be favorable anyway with welders and ee picking up the slack (mainly thinking chalice decks and using ee to destroy jitte/leftover deathrites after a moon. Yes storm takes a hit but game 1 is usually variance on what kind of hand you kept if you didnt know they're on storm. Kind of the same reason I moved canonist back to the side). Not to mention having 5 ways to find bridge game 1 should allow us to steal most games against rug, sneak etc.
Again I could be completely wrong, but that's why I'll be running the no-revoke list for a bunch of games to see if it's actually missed.

Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Returned to Painter for the daily last night in MTGO and was rewarded with Burn matchups in Rounds 1 and 2. Even stalled the game out and had hands that were about as good as it gets, and still went 0-2, 1-2. I wish there was some tech for that matchup. It's already started to ramp back up online.
-
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I played burn last night, and Jack did twice. Must be one super lucky burn guy out there who got matched up against all of us. Went 3-1 against pyro stone blade twice and bug delved, lost to burn.

Get some Bottle Gnomes in your board. That way you can sac for 3 life, weld it back in and gain another 3 life. Also can be fetched with Recruiter.
-
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I'm trying out a single Rabblemaster as a recruitable fallback option. I run mono red.
-
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Burn versus mono red version is tough. Best answer lie in other colors, and artifact answers include only dragons claw. Which doesn't help due to their smash to smithereens they bring in. Other option is Leyline of sanctity and possibly mull for it.
-
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I honestly am 50/50 at WORST against burn but I run leyline and still run sphere of law. That combo almost completely shuts that deck down. Sometimes they are just too fast but if I have a leyline in my opener and can land the sphere by turn 3-4 I can usually pull it off. When I had spellskite main it was even better but switched to the canonist.
Speaking of which, Jack I'm surprised you switched out of this. I have been amazed at how well canonist has been working against removal. I am grabbing canonist now as my first line of defense against things like Miracles and have been having great success with it. It seems like a decent catch-all for a lot of MUs.

Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Hey everybody. I played in an 18 man tourney a little bit ago. It was my very first legacy event. I had a lot of fun but did have a few issues.
Matchups:
Merfolk - won 2/0
Landstill - won 2/1
Sneak 'n' Show - lost 0/2
Elves - lost 0/2
U/G Infect - lost 0/2
My question was with Elves. We played a few games after he beat me and I was just having problem after problem. I play R/W painter and every game it seemed like my hate cards just didn't do enough. I am running pretty close to Jack's 75. Every game I was able to E. tutor into a hate card. I did E. Bridge but that just slowed him down until he got reclamation sage. I tried 3sphere and Cannonist as well. I tried to get 2 hate cards out to get by reclamation sage, but was unable to.
It also seemed like I was drawing pretty poorly. Never saw Painter.
Just wanted to know what everyone else's experience vs. elves was.
Thanks for any advice or ideas.

Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
My history against elves has definitely been in my favor. It's important to keep in mind they can answer all the things that are good against them but if you get 2 e bridges, or e bridge and welder, with a revoker on wirewood, then they lose. I also play a good bit of removal in my board and am still running chandra. How were you boarding?
-
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Played against storm last night in a local event. In G3, turn 1 grindstone, turn 2 trinisphere, turn 3 blood moon, turn 4 revoker on petal to turn off abrupt decay...GG. I love this deck
-
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
In more white heavy deck, how much of a plus is Mother of runes? I'm thinking about them to protect the combo and welder. Not saying I will Im just curious as to thoughts of about tinkering with it.
-
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
I think Spellskite is almost always better than Mom in painter, because you can use it the turn it comes into play.
-
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Spellskite also has the added bonus of being an artifact that you can tutor for or weld back in.
-
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
And can protect grindstone and other artifacts.
-
Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
How is everyone doing on painter recently?
For some reasons I been doing very poorly. My meta seems to have suddenly switch to pure combo.
Majority are playing S&T, storm, reanimator (many different ones now with the new unbanned dragon even). I am having a lot of issues beating them as they are fast and some like the new reanimator uses gamble and burning wish. The blueer combo decks now almost always play dig which is almost as bad as cruise. Miracles play reb and beb plus dig which seems to speed up their kill time and consistency. It's almost like this change has made me a bad player or I must be making the wrong choices for some reason.
My deck is close to what jack posted earlier this month. I change out Daretti to preist as I find I rarely board him in. And did I mention I am having a poor record with S&T and reanimator? I am having a better time with d&t, elves and delver decks.
Have not seen jack stream lately?

Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Went 3-1 last night in a 15 person tourney with Shortcake last night.
Round 1: Esper Thopter Foundry - 2-0 Win
Round 2: Artifact Loam Lands - 1-2 Loss
Round 3: Enchantress - 2-1 Win
Round 4: UWR Delver - 2-0 Win
The deck felt strong today. I may have won the whole thing if not for my lands opponent having two mox diamond through my turn 1 moon in game 3. I'll try to write up some additional info later.
Half of Game 2 of Round 1 was featured on WUBRGxyz's stream viewable here.

That's pretty sweet. Old borders were so nice. I'm working towards foiling out what I can at the moment. Just got my last fetch today and am picking up a miscut foil canonist tomorrow

Re: [Deck] Imperial Painter
Lejay has been 4-0'ing dailies with this mono red list for the past few weeks on MTGO.
http://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/263969#online
I really like the 3 Koths in the board, as I am a player that often sides Koth in for some of the fairer matchups and not just miracles. Definitely going to test the one-of Daretti and chrome mox main. I think multiple mox is overextending in a deck that already lacks card advantage, but one is perfectly fine, especially in a list that isn't running enlightened tutor, which is already a lot of card disadvantage.
