What I hate most is cantripping into cantrips if you look for gas or business which was an issue in the 16-cantrip shell. If you can remove an opposing clock, I think you can bear the lost card-selection, because you gained time instead and forced your opponent to burn his cantrips to find another clock rather than counterspells. The biggest upside to have in mind is gaining game 1 outs to stuff like Teeg, Thalia, Meddling Mage, Revoker, Delver, SFM and more. Look at the Bolts as "Pre-boarded removal in place of the Preordains".
I would love to suggest one more Bolt and 3 Chain Lightnings. Then you can even ignore Pif and the whole combopart of the deck and play 7x 3 dmg for lethal. It also gives you plenty of time against Delver decks.Quote:
3 Lightning Bolt
I largely agree with your analysis, and really like the board you posted. Obviously I will vote in favor of 1x Tendrils!
Dread of Night / Massacre
I think your points about Dread of Night vs D&T are very good, and I agree with what you wrote.
However, the meta you predicted has more Blade Control than D&T. Although Blade Control is already a good matchup, it's still great to have 1x Massacre.
I'd like to make one last point - it's plausible that a 1 Massacre 1 Dread of Night split is slightly better than 2x Dread of Night. (Slosthedark used this in his board at Ovino9), and I would consider that.
So in summary, Massacre has this profile:
-Worse than Dread of Night against D&T
-Extra sideboard slot against Blade Control (DoN is useless here)
-Extra sideboard slot against UWR (DoN is also useless here)
D&T is a much harder matchup than Blade, so I definitely can see you playing 2 DoN / 0 Massacre. However, I think 1 Don / 1 Massacre is a happy medium.
UR Delver / Tendrils
Yes, this is a good matchup, and the versions without Wasteland / Stifle is basically our best non-Elves matchup. (even Burn is a harder matchup, because Burn will randomly win matches with Eidolon draws)
Because the Tendrils is also great against Miracles, I am in favor of running a minimum 1x in the board right now.
Non-Counterbalance UWR Control
There have been a few Dig Through Time UWR Control decks doing well in Magic online dailies, and Reid Duke recently wrote in support of Dig Through Time in Miracles. I think a non-negligible part of the meta is going to be UWR Control w/o Counterbalance. Obviously, this is going to be awesome for us because Counterbalance is deadly, but we have a ton of strategies to fight Spell Pierce / Counterspell / FoW / Flusterstorm. If the new Delve UWR decks turn out to be important, I'm not sure what the best board will be, but I'd much rather have 1x ToA over the 2nd Krosan Grip for this matchup. In ANT vs non-Counterbalance control matchups, games where you natural draw Tendrils are completely different than ones where you draw a normal Infernal Tutor hand.
So in summary, if you do the Tendrils / Krosan split (as opposed to 2x Krosan), you get a free card to bring in against Burn, UR Delver, Miracles, and the new Delve-UWR control decks. I'd much rather have these extra bonuses over having the 5th answer to Counterbalance.
I have switched configuration very often but 4 tendrils seems to be the best according to my style of play. Warrens is incredible when cast early against some kind of opponents, but I prefer another tendrils MD in the long run. I admit I am not completely sold on it yet, but my games so far point in that direction.
Hi guys! Anyone knows how has gone yesterday at prague eternal for the storm players?
i suppose no top8 list yet? i rapidly checked, but i haven't seen nothing about it
the top 8 was
Miracles
2x UR
UWR - winner
BGr Hexmage Depths - runner-up

2x Merfolk
best Storm player was Carsten Kotter at 25th place I believe
On Sunday I won the trial for the next PE, I was very lucky few times, at least my deck made up for subpar Friday+Saturday... what is more interesting are my rounds

2:1 UWR Miracles
2:1 UR (a little misplay into BS lock)

lovely metagame (not that bad, the rest was, BUG, BURG, Miracles, S+T)... other than that I was 3:1 vs UWR and 2:1 vs UR in matches over Fr+Sat and those losses were really unfortunate... might that inspire someone for NJ here is the list

How essential/valuable is Grim Tutor to the deck?
I think you can do fine without it. It's also not that great against UR Delver, which is pretty popular, because it's highly Daze-able and looping it with PiF puts you down 6 life against their burn spells, in addition to the obvious dis-synergy between Grim Tutor and Ad Nauseam because it takes life and leaves you with less mana floating. Grim Tutor does increase your business density, though, but I feel like playing the full 16 cantrips and filtering aggressively for Infernal is the way to do it. I dicked around with Divining Top and/or Grim, but for me the most optimal config has just been blue spells and using them well.
Is it too painful to play the combination of thoughtseize, probe and grim tutor in a meta flooded with ur burn?
So, Prague Eternal is over. I am at home again, a bit disappointed because I dropped out from the trial on Friday, where I had to play against 2 Miracles in round 1 and 3.
The main was far more promising because I went 4:0 and went on a losing spree for a 5:3 in the end.
Nonetheless, the deck felt good and it was nice to meet Martin again and other very friendly people.
not much right know, still better than preordain
why not? theoreticaly the 61st card should be more valuable than slightly decreased chance of having other cards in opener, there was some discussion about 61 cards, used to be 15th land for me and I kept this approach ever since.
it's a goldfish feat 1 discard, keeping ToA in hand is good many wins were from inhand Toa, drawing both, PiF or chainning spells, I SB -Island -2SDT -Grim +Trop +2AD +CoV in general, lgs players prefer Relic of Progenitus to Cage so I have Needle instead of AD
you can call Threshold a burn deck, I was contemplating switching the split in favor of Duress but I prefer to improve my Miracles MU rather than already good UR... UR has max 4 bolts postboard which is ok and can be played around, snapping their only threat if they randomly have counter heavy hand / discading T1 creature saves you min 1-3 life anyway
@Cabal Therapy - It was a pleasure having you there, unfortunately this weekend just wasn't meant for Storm to shine :/ see you soon on PE 3!!
Hi to everyone. Yesterday i played in the last tournament of the catalan league of legacy 2014. (76 players). I was 4th in the yearly standings before the tournament, and i needed to reach top8 to be 3rd and the victory to be the champion. I runned a list with no tops in MD,2 preordains, 7 discard spells and 1 grim tutor. The side was: 3 xantid 3 decay 2 krosan 2 top 2 chain 2 massacre 1 warrens.
R1: Treasure Canadian (against the leader):
G1: I won easily via PIF.
+1 Empty the warrens -1 Grim tutor
G2: I kept a hand with fetchland, island, 2 dark ritual, Duress, infernal tutor, gitaxian probe. I drew 3 consecutive tutors which i couldn't play because i knew he was playing 3 surgical extraction and i died to 2 early delvers
G3: He didn't play a creature until the 8th turn, but i couldn't see a single discard spell in all the game and I ended diying and really frustrated.
Wining this match was so important, i hate my luck.
0-1
R2: ANT
I went off before my oponent in both games, mirrors are stupid:D
SB: +1 sensei's divining top -1 tropical island
1-1
R3: Jund
I won G1 ang G3 easily, in g2 i lost to multiple discard +ooze, sometimes happens.
SB: +2 sensei's divining top, -2 cabal therapy
2-1
R4: Miracles
G1: He assembles countertop before i can go off. I've got a tendrils in hand so i try the natural tendrils combo, but 3 angels kill me before i can do it
SB: +2 top, +3 decay +2 krosan +1 warrens -2 cabal ritual -2 preordain -2 lotus petal -1 ponder -1 island
G2: After decaying a couterbalance i win through snapcaster into counterspell by holding a second bomb in the top with SDT in play.
G3: I won this one, i can't remember how:)
3-1
R5: Patriot
I won both games before his delvers and stoneforges killed me. Massacre was fantastic to kill delver + meddling in G2
SB: +2 massacre +1 chain of vapor -1 cabal ritual -1 preordain -1 grim tutor
4-1
R6: ANT (against the 3rd in the yearly standings)
g1: I won the die and i kept a hand with 2 lands, gitaxian, cabal ritual, LED, infernal and brainstorm, fantastic!. I play a gitaxian seeing 4 lands, 1 duress, 1 dark ritual 1 preordain, and i drawed a petal. I played LED, petal and land. In his turn he plays the duress, wchich i respond with brainstorm drawing grim tutor, dark ritual and land. Here i did an awful mistake: i hid grim tutor +infernal tutor, and i should have left a land instead the grim. He took my dark ritual. In my turn i drawed the infernal and began to think. Damn, i can't go via PiF without the grim tutor in hand, i will only reach 9 storm... So i had to go of via Ad Nauseam with 17 lifes and no mana in pool, which is great anyways. I revealed grim tutor + PiF but no petals and LEDs so i stopped at 4 lifes to kill him the next turn using grim tutor. I knew his hand wasn't very great, his possibilities to go of the next turn were really low. I pass turn and he drawed a brainstorm, found infernal + LED and killed me. That's karma, i should have seen the correct play to go of via PiF.
SB: see R2
g2: First turn kill, that's nice.
g3: He killed me in g2, i couldn't do anything.
4-2: This year i won't reach the top 3. I felt terrible, i hadn't been lucky, but i also commited a little but decisive missplay.
R7: Miracles
G1: He assembles countertop, but in my next turn (he's tapped and has no FoWs) i try to go off with 2 cabal rituals and infernal tutor. He reveals a blind counterspell with counterbalance.
SB: see R4
G2: I destroyed 2 counterbalances but he found the third. Anyways i won via empty the warrens through the countertop!
G3: He played T1 top and T2 counterbalance. I've got krosan + decay in hand and volcanic + bayou into play. I couldn't found the third land until 13 turns later (ye, i counted them), and when i can kill counterbalance his hand is perfect and an snapcaster only needs 2 turns more to kill me. I decay snapcaster to win time, but his hand is a full set of counterspells and 2 swords (for this reason i never bring in xantids against miracles) ii i die to some angels 2 turns later.
4-3
Despite i was unlucky in the decisive matches, that's no excuse to not reach the top8, because i could have avoided losing in the first game of the 6th match. Round 1 was horrible and desperating, that's true.
After the result i've got only a question. I'm running xantid swarm only to beat Show and Tell (ok, and weird things like merfolks or spiral tide) since miracle players in my meta always leave some sowrds and explosives in. Should i take them out of the sideboard to make space for other cards like carpet of flowers or flusterstorm? If i did it i would increase the chain of vapor count to 3, to have a consistent answer to leyline of sanctity. I'mm also thinking about taking out empty the warrens, i'm not sure. Opinions?
Thanks to all of you!
First of all, that's unfortunate about the tournament. But it happens sometimes. The mistake you made is one I've also made in the past (and on a feature table in a GP on top of that.. :( ), the only thing you can do is learn a lesson from it and never make the same mistake again I guess :).
Secondly, about the sideboard:
-Xantid swarm: i'm a huge fan of running Xantid Swarm in a sideboard. They have had a place in my sideboard in 90% of the tournaments I attended running storm in the last 4 years or so. I also side them in against miracles even if they always keep in some way to remove them because they evade a number of popular counterspells (flusterstorm, spell pierce,..). I just love to have an answer to top floating a force or snapcaster -> counterspell/flusterstorm.
-Carpet of flowers: never been the biggest fan of this card, it's a good ritual and it helps against softcounters but I've always found them to narrow to justify sideboard slots. They are great against UR Delver and such tempo deck but to be honest our UR Delver matchup really isn't bad so I'm not inclided to play them.
-(3) chain of vapors: Depending on how many permanent answers you run it's very much okay to up your CoV count to 3, I've done so in the past and depending on the meta that might be a fine choice (like you said in case you have a high chance of running into leyline of sanctitiy, otherwise 2 should be fine).
- Krosan Grip: I'm actually not the biggest fan of krosan Grip in the sideboard. 2G is hard against lockdecks (D&T, MUD, Pox,...) so the only matchup where I really see them worthy is against miracles. In that case would rather add a 4th Abrupt decay instead of the 2 Krosan Grip (especially if you're planning to run 3 CoV).
So, I hope I could help a bit by sharing my insights on the sideboard.
