Thing worth of note: Teferi's Response finally made an official debut in a high ranking list.

For the first time ever, I played a non High Tide deck at an event at an open. Tried this deck at the open trial, went 2-2, beat ANT at 36 life and when they went to tendris, I crop rotated for a glimmerpost to gain a buncha life putting me at 6 and them at 40 something, but there was a Primeval in play.


Won against Omnitell game 2 because they did Release the Ants, and from 22 life down to 3, was all it took to scry 1 each time to get to my Emrakul, then they decked out.

Beat burn, Glimmperpost is awesome.

Beat something else I don't remember.

I can't remember the total since I did not buy it all at once.

Around 380 bucks on MTGO traders counting sideboard. Also most list do not run basic forest anymore so you can save money on getting polluted deltas and flooded strands over mistys.

Hey, that was me! Really exciting, exhausting day for me. For the first seven rounds it was by far my best SCG performance ever. I was 6-0-1. I lost the last two round to get knocked out of top 8, including the final round on camera. I don't know if any of you saw the camera match, but it's on the stream archive. I still can't pinpoint where things went wrong in that match, maybe I didn't mulligan aggressively enough. I felt like I just drew terribly.

I like the list a lot. I'm not sure if there are any changes to make to the mainboard, I'll probably tweak some things in the SB. Elephant grass may come out, it felt really underwhelming. Feedback is greatly appreciated! I'm still learning how to be good at this stuff.

Great showing! I saw the match, and yes you did draw terribly unlucky. However, I agree that you should've mulliganed more agressively given what your opening 7 was. The list looks good and props to playing what fits your style. I still think top is a 3-4 of to keep quality draws flowing. Did you Teferi anything sweet?

Thanks for the feedback. I think game two especially I should have mulled more knowing my opp was an a quick aggressive deck. Both games I kept hands with Lands, Brainstorm, and Rotation. Usually that can get there but not when you brick hard with Brainstorm and your opponent stifles your shuffle effects. Game one I was drawing live to a Primeval Titan for like 4 turns, holding a Cavern of Souls up in my hand. Super frustrating.
Game two I actually forgot to activate eye of ugin at the end of my opp's turn at the end there, which is why it looked like I just conceded. My line at that point was pretty nonexistent. I was shooting for Eye Emrakul -> draw blue source -> Resolve show and tell for Emrakul -> Pass -> try to attack with Emmy and hope my opponent miraculously doesn't block with Delver. It wasn't going to work anyway. I was talking to Matthias Hunt after and he said probably the correct line was search Ulamog, hopefully draw a cloudpost, cast ulamog blow up vortex, then next turn somehow top-deck emrakul or another cloudpost. Both were pretty narrow.

I'm going to try to squeeze a third top back in if I can. I'm not sure what to cut for it, but I'll find something.

Regarding Teferi's Response, I never got to cast it! I only played against two decks all day with Wasteland or Port. I brought in against a Goblins opponent but never saw it during the match, sad times. I still love the card and want to keep it in my 75, partially just because I think it's hilarious. Watching the replay I loved the conversation it brought up during the coverage.

Can someone outline the choices or though process I should be going through when I have primeval titan ETB. I know its going to vary a lot depending on the situation but hopefully you can outline some of the situations.

What 2 lands should I be getting in what situations?
what determines if I go for chasm or 2x glimerposts or cloudposts?
Should I be getting cloudpost / eye of ugin on my first ETB? it seems like what i go for most but am not sure its correct.
Is chasm a last resortcompared to gaining life with glimmers? its possible i crutch to much on it and don't get glimmers when i should.

I still think Burn is the hard match up right now. The worst matchup BUG Delver has disappeared for the most part. People I know who used to run BUG Delver all switched to something else with it not being good against RU Delver and Burn.

While I like 12 post, burn is popular both online and at my local store. Still have issues with it if I don't have the early show and tell I'm toast.

What do people think of Zuran Orb to fetch with Trinket Mage versus Burn? Still get roasted by Burn unless I have the show and tell early and then its risky getting lands other then Chasm with Titan depending on if they have 2 mountains up for the Price and if you have a Force or BEB. Zuran Orb lets you sacrifice your lands if they have the Price.

I like your current list with the Mages. Tried it out on MTGO a few times. Has 2 tops been a good number? I really like seeing an early top.

TES you want to name Burning Wish with Meddling Mage because all their answers to mMge are in the board and it shuts off wishing for tendrils.
ANT, Infernal Tutor is a good name.

Congrats on 4-0. Does not having Bojuka bog hurt your dredge match up? Tabernacle is good against them but they can still beat you down with Ichorids and pay for a critter or two.

Congrats on your finish. Have 2 Force been ok? Usually run 3 or 4 so you see it against combo?

I remember when I used to run Teferi's Response in Vintage keeper way back in the early 2000s. Really amazing when it resolves but does Teferi's Response work well with come into play tapped Cloudposts and you might not have 2 mana to cast it when they wasteland your come into play tapped cloudpost where as you could have cast needle turn 1 before playing your cloudpost. In vintage you can cast it off a mox + your first land drop.

There is no set answer. Really depends on the board state, life totals and match up. What lands you have out is important. Are you facing lethal next turn or immediately if your burn opponent has 2 untaped mountains to Price of Progress you. In general you want to plan out to survive and eye for an Eldrazi and cast it as soon as possible. Doesn't always have to be Emrakul if you can't get to Emrakul mana sometimes Ulamog destroy something and attack next turn gets the job done. Eye and another Cloudpost is the most common assuming you have enough lands out and your Titan will live to attack and you can get 2 cloudposts or glimmers next turn to be able to both search for Emrakul and cast it but there is no hard and fast rule it really depends.

Not running a Forest seems loose because it helps you beat Blood moon by allowing you to hard cast Titan under Blood moon. Forest & Vesuva copying the Forest as well as filtering through Candelabra and a single Forest.
You are cutting your outs down to Show and Tell/Hydroblast/BEB/Repeal and Ulamog (the hard way w/o Titan to speed it up) if the Blood moon resolves.
Also, basic Forest allows you to play around Wasteland w/ artifacts for a while.
As an aside, you get to be immune to Back to basics & Choke w/ it as well. (not commonly played cards)

2 Forces felt fine for the mainboard, but I'd like to slip 2 into the Sideboard if I can, it would be a huge help against Storm combo. The 2 copies mainboard definitely caught people off guard who weren't expecting FoW out of a cloudpost deck. They're nice to dig for in an emergency, but tend to not bog down your hand. Often i would have one floating around behind a SDT in case I needed it in an emergency. Bonus points for being able to hardcast it!

Casting Teferi's Response has not really been a problem. Honestly it's like 70% for Rishadan Port and 30% for Wasteland. Death and Taxes is pretty prevalent in my Meta. Usually with this deck you don't want to run a coudpost out there with 0-1 other lands up unless you can protect it with Crop Rotation, so by the time I'm playing Cloudposts I often have the 2 mana up to represent response. When it comes to stopping wasteland it's not ideal but it's a good help. Against Port decks it's a complete blowout.

Round 1: Adam with U/W/R Young Pyroblade. Won 2-0. Did not sideboard. I repealed his stoneforge mystic to delay a batter skull from coming in. Don’t have much to say about this round, felt nice to start the day with an easy win since I was so sleepy.

Round 2: David McDarby with Maverick. Lose 1-2. Did not sideboard.
Game 1: Was in a very comfortable position; David was colored screwed by his bojuka bog for multiple turns discarding all of his mother of runes. I was just simply playing lands and passing the turn, which lend me to getting up to 28 life points.

David finally found mana, had a board position of Spirit of the Labyrinth, Gaddock Teeg, and followed up with a Knight of the Reliquary. He passes the turn. On my turn I play Karakas, activate targeting Teeg. With Gaddock Teeg back in David’s hand, I repeal Knight of the Reliquary so I can buy myself a couple more turn for my deck to do its thing (which it absolutely would have).

Knight of the Reliquary gets bounced, I state I’m drawing a card, David nods in agreement. I look at the top card of my library when we both lock eyes and realize we done fucked up. We call a judge over. Judge asks where the extra card was, I tell him on top of the library. He asks if it was every in my hand. I say yes because this is a silly question, obviously it had to be in my hand for me to look at it on top of the library. I receive a game loss.

Game 2: Turn three show and tell primeval titan, David scoops.

Game 3: Never draw colored mana, I die.

Over the course of the day I talk to three different judges. In the end I received a game loss instead of a warning because of the miscommunication with the card being in my “hand”. It physically touched my hand but never left the top of the library, and never was in my “grip of cards”. All well, won’t ever do that again.

Round 3: Adam Bernstein with Dredge. Won 2-1. Sideboard in Force of Will, and flusterstorm maybe?
Game 1: I couldn't find bojuka bog in time before Adam had 14 power on the board. I tutor up glacial chasm to survive a couple more turns. But just to be safe I should have conceded to him due to time consideration in hindsight.

Game 2: Multiple bojuka bogs meant Adam was on the 1 Narcomoeba beat down plan. I hard cast Primeval Titan and get cloudpost and eye of ugin, pretty sure he conceded once I tutored for an eldrazi.

Game 3: Adam on the play, I force of will his faithless looting. Adam plays LED to flash it back, but I slowed him down enough by countering the first one. I play vesuva coping his mana confluence so I would have a colored mana source; this allowed me to cast Trinket Mage, grab expedition map, and consequently bojuka bog his graveyard. I cast Primeval Titan, do the usual Eldrazi thing. I win.


Round 4: Skyler with Jund. Win 2-0. Did not sideboard. Skyler was a really fun opponent, we were making jokes and having fun.
Game 1: Mull to six. Skyler has no turn 1 play. I play cloudpost and pass. Hymn to Tourach snags two of my Repeals. He follows up with Liana, I mess up and discard another Repeal instead on Crop Rotation and see vision of Liliana ruining my lands in the not so distant future. Luckily top deck Pithing Needle to buy me some time. Repeal Liliana back to Skyler’s hand in response to Abrupt Decay targeting my pithing needle. Skyler chooses to play something else that turn instead of drop it down again. I go down to seven life points eventually, top deck Emrakul to hit him for 15 exactly.

Game 2: Mull to six. Styler again has no turn 1 play. This game was very back and forth and took quite awhile to close out. I probably could have gone for Eye of Ugin and another Cloudpost the first time I cast Primeval Titan, but I was worried about him Abrupt Decaying my Pithing Needle, and following up on his turn by making me sacrifice Primeval Titan, swing with a Tarmogoyf and Blood Braid Elf, and finish me off with a couple of Punishing Fires. So I elect to just grab two Glimmerposts instead. I go from 7 to 17 life points. I pass the turn.

He attacks with Tarmogoyf and Blood Braid Elf, I don’t block with Primeval Titan. Second main phase, Skyler three-for-one’s himself my blasting my Titan with a Lightning Bolt and two Punishing Fires! I don’t mind because I had access to two more between my hand and floating one of them on top of my library with the Divining Top.

I’m at ten life points when I eventually cast Kozilek while facing down two 5-power Tarmogoyfs and Liliana. Skyler makes be sacrifice Kozilek. The shuffle effect from Kozilek means I was no longer staring down lethal.

Desperately, he Thoughtseizes himself to get them back up to lethal on board. He attacks and I cast crop rotation for Glimmerpost to survive the attack at 4 life points. The fourth locus land means I can generate enough mana with Candelabra to tutor for and cast Emrakul. I tutor for Karakas somehow and that was that.

Round 5: Henry Freedman with U/W/R Pyroblade. Win 2-0. Sideboard in 2 Chill, 1 Elephant Grass, and 3 Hydroblasts. Only ever saw 1 Hydroblast.

Game 1: This game took over half of the time we had to play, as I survived his onslaught of Young Pyromancers and Stoneforge Mystics by decimating his board with Engineered Explosives and Repeals. The one sideboard card I saw all match was spent countering a Young Pyromancer, I believe. I survive long enough for the deck to do its usual thing.

Game 2: More of the same, I Show and Tell a Primeval Titan early on, its goes to the farm. I happily gain six life points. Two minutes left in the round, I tutor for both Emrakul and Karakas on the end of his turn. Next turn he would have attacked for lethal. I cast Emrakul, play Karakas, bounce back Emrakul and announce that I’m ending my turn and going to the next one.

I’m kind of confused at this point because he’s not conceding. Henry states, “Don’t you mean you’re passing to my turn. You never announced the Emrakul trigger so you don’t get it.” I tell Henry that’s not how that works, and its pretty obvious everyone was aware of the trigger. Henry calls a judge over, playing to his outs. Judge tells Henry that Emrakul’s trigger doesn’t work the way Henry is thinking, since I displayed awareness of the trigger when I stated I was going to my next turn.

It was unfortunate how the match ended, because Henry seemed like a nice enough kind of guy. But once the match started slipping out of his reach throughout the round, his personality seemed to do a 180 degree turn. I don’t blame him for playing to his outs. I ate an orange after the match, and I go on the rest of the day never forgetting to announce Emrakul’s cast trigger.

Round 6: Neil with Bant Shardless Thopterblade Control. I win 2-0. Did not sideboard.

Game 1: Neil exhausts his Force of Wills between my turn 1 Divining Top and my repeal targeting his Sylvan Library. Neil spent the game brainstorming, drawing extra cards with Sylvan Library, and brainstorming some more with Jace. I cast Primeval Titan, grab Cloudpost and Eye of Ugin, and at the end of his turn Crop Rotate for Karakas. He concedes.

Game 2: Meddling Mage names Primeval Titan, I get greedy and wait to blow up my Engineered Explosives set at 2 sunburst. For some reason I knew Neil had another one in his hand. On his turn he krosan grips the Engineered Explosives, and get really excited because it was such a sick play on his part.

Neil counters my repeal on his Meddling Mage, and I give up on trying to get Primeval Titan into play and instead just cast Kozilek instead. On my main phase (?), Neil vendilion clique’s me to try and grab the Kozilek he bounced with Karakas on his turn. I brainstorm Kozilek and something else. Neil lets my keep what I have. I use Divining Top to redraw Kozilek. Kozilek’s cast trigger draws my into Emrakul. On my next turn I cast Emrakul. Neil is able to survive an attack from Emrakul, putting him down to 2 life points. So I cast Engineered Explosives for sunburst of 2 to get rid of his creatures. He Force of Will’s it. Not really sure if I have to do anything else to in order to win, I cast Kozilek too just for value/fun. He concedes with both Emrakul and Kozilek on the board.

Round 7: David Stroud with U/R delver. Lose 0-2. Sideboard in 2 Chills, 3 Hydroblasts, 1 Elephant grass. Only ever see one of my sideboard cards.

Game 1: I keep an normally fine hand, but it wasn’t fast enough/aggressive enough for U/R delver.

Game 2: I hydroblast his Young Pyromancer. He beats down with a lonely Swiftspear. I decide not to run out Engineered Explosives set to 1 sunburst. I promptly die when he drops his three other Swiftspears, double lighting bolts me, and attacks for lethal through my Primeval Titan! Wasn’t even mad, was super hilarious to get blown out that way.

After the match I eat some beef jerky and reflect on how un-winnable the match up feels without Tabernacle.

Round 8: Feline. Lose 0-2. Sideboard in all my counter magic.

Game 1: I repeal her Candlestick at the end of her turn. Follow up with a pithing needle naming Candelabra. She points out a line of play involving repeal, pithing needle, and being able to rename it on her Divining Top. I agree with her line of reasoning, and surprise her with a second repeal on my own pithing needle in order to reset it. I figure she needs Divining Top more than me, and same with Candelabra(s).

I also grab Bojuka Bog with Primeval Titan, foolishly thinking that it could remotely have a chance from stopping her from combo’ing all over my face.

Eventually, Feline starts rapidly stating increasingly-growing-numbers towards my general vicinity, and I draw an infinite amount of cards from my library.

Game 2: Feline establishes Top + Counterbalance, while merchant scrolling for fluster storm.

Once I was able to get back up to three mana (I had all my crop rotations countered), Feline made an amazing play. The best way I can describe it is that she simultaneously “soul read” my mind, while jedi-mind tricked me into casting Show and Tell. “Show and Tell will at least get flusterstorm out of my hand.” Well, I did have to agree with her on that part.

With me tapped out, my Force of Will did nothing against her counterbalance. Feline starts rapidly stating increasingly-growing-numbers towards my general vicinity, and I draw an infinite amount of cards from my library.

I attribute this loss due to Feline’s clearly superior tangible and intangible skills at magic, my own lack of knowledge about the match up, and Feline’s total understanding of the match up. In any case, it was really fun to watch Feline make High Tide sing its tune in person.

Round 9: Glen Jones with U/R Standstill. Sideboard in 2 Chills, but not the 3 Hydroblasts for some reason.

Game 1: Stifle + Wasteland + Manland beats do its job.

Game 2: I’d say 80% of the time in the round was spent with both Glen and I discarding and passing the turn. I was totally happy to play the waiting game with his standstill in play. Eventually he broke parity when he found a single manland.

By that time his hand was full of counterspells and stifles, but I fought through them to rotate a cavern of souls into play. So much time had passed that I had more than enough lands to just simply hard cast an uncounterable Kozilek.

Game 3: His turn 1 is spent naming Candelabra with pithing needle. I respond in kind with my own needle naming wasteland. Multiple manlands were beating me down. I couldn’t play the waiting game this time and let him draw his cards off of standstill. Crop rotations kept getting countered, and stifle did some serious work on my lands and on activations of expedition maps.

I eventually get either Kozilek into play, but the combination of the number of permanents, stifling of annihilator triggers, and manland beat down got be down to 3 life points. Keep in mind this was on turn 3 of the 5 extra turns at the end of round. For some reason I fetch to try and find a moment’s peace or crop rotation via Divining Top. Glen casts a Sudden Shock through a Chill to relieve me of playing magic for the day.

Overall, I thought it was ridiculous how aggressive Glen was in the way in which asked me to play more quickly, in consideration of the time left in the round. Don’t play Landstill if you’re worried about unintentional draws.

In hindsight, crop rotation and repeal are very bad against a deck with manlands, stifles, and straight up counterspells. I’m fine trading crop rotation and a land for an opponent’s force of will + blue card, but actual counterspell gives my opponent too much value.


Overall: With a record of 5-4, I accomplished my goal of getting into top 64. Before my loss to Glen I was at 36th place, but afterwards ended up at 56th. I’m pretty sure splitting with Glen wouldn’t have gotten me into top 32 anyway, so I was fine playing it out.

Not only was this the first time I played Turbo Eldrazi in a tournament, it was my first SCG legacy experience. As such, with all due considered, I’m very happy with the results I put up.

I enjoyed the report, Saab! It's fun to watch Feline play High Tide since it all happens so fast. Wingler and I have been teaching her our deck and she's putting it together, so it's a matchup she knows relatively well.

In fact, I saw Feline playing the deck during the Open Trial Saturday night. I'm not sure how it went for her.

Thanks! My opponent was obviously a very good player, and he picked his spots extremely well. That matchup is pretty tough already, and when you don't find any of your threats, like with me, you spend a lot of time floundering.

As far as chalice goes, I only ever set it to 0 on sunday to slow down a storm player. I'm not against setting it to 1 if it will shut down my opponent, though. We can still get there without our 1 cmc spells.

Against what match ups do you bring in Meddling Mage? Also, can anyone give insight into how to beat U/R delver and High Tide? I kept the Crop Rotations in against Feline to push out an early Primeval Titan, but she correctly countered all of them. Maybe I'd be better off with some number of Chalice of the Void in the sideboard to shut off all of the cantrips and High Tides?

Can someone please go over the miracles match up with me? It's supposed to be strongly in our favor, but damned if I don't lose every single game to them.
My best friend said I just need to learn how to play against it, then it's easy. I get entreated. I get V-cliqued. I get jace'd. Everything I try to do to prevent it or win gets countered.

Can someone give me the game plan here? Other than what's in the OP match up analysis? All input welcome and appreciated.

Worst case repeal the angel tokens, or try to get a win condition established before they can entreat for a threatening number of angels.

Terminus and Vendillion Clique can put Eldrazis on the bottom of the library, but that doesn't really do that much when Eye of Ugin can tutor them back into your hand. Brainstorm to hide cards against Vendilion Clique if you really need to.

Repeal also helps against Jace if it is about to ultimate, but I've found that Miracle players just use Jace to Brainstorm each turn, which isn't that threatening. Are you running Pithing Needle? Name Jace.

All this is absolutly true and explained in a great way! What's your current list? Perhaps it can be improved a little bit. I returned to SDT, which allows some nice draw tricks under VC-lock. So you can assemble your lands, including Cavern a draw the Titan via the Top in your main phase (after the end-of-draw-step-clique). Normally only Venser can ruin your day at that point, but after bouncing and re-casting VC your opponent usually hasn't 4 untapped lands ;-)

It's worth noting that the hands you'd normally mull are the above average hands against Miracles. Like 2+ Cloudposts, and cards like eye, or eldeazi - which normally are virtual mulligans. They ignore all of their interaction. Top and fetching is usually all you need to see enough to win. Crop rotation is bad, side out all four. SnT is weak, repeal is so so. Play a cavern and a grip or two if you want to hate. But the MU is more about the line than changing up the cards. I think people that call it a bye are wrong, but it sure is favorable.

Pretty much these thoughts. Miracles is roughly the only deck which lets you play lands and do nothing until you win. If countertop resolves, that is mostly what you will be doing anyway.
Like Tim said, all you really need is Top to get going. Or a land heavy starting seven. Cavern of Souls has been very good and I would recommend it. I have tweaked my deck against the UR metagame with not one but two maindecked EE's and those are also very good insurance against angels. Miracles is a very good matchup but if things start to go the wrong way, you can easily lose. Venser is actually a very scary card unless you are resolving a Titan sometime soon. Ponder build is better for us.

I just wanted to add something since no one else has mentioned it. You can still Flusterstorm through a Counterbalance. The original card, since you cast it, will be countered, but the Storm copies are put directly onto the stack and, as such, will still resolve normally.

Usually the only way that I loose to miracles is if they entreat for 3 angel tokens on turn 6 or endless vendillion clique bounces/beats. Usually they side board out terminus and/or swords to plowshares. They will also thin the number of counterbalances against us.

The most important card to "resolve" is Expedition Map. It's the must counter spell in our deck. Always search for Eye of Ugin, as they can't clique lands.

And yes, crop rotation is terribad against miracles. In game 1, your better off just not casting it ever, because there is a very high probability you will 2 for 1 yourself.

Also, the amount of dedicated hate cards against us is usually pretty sparse, its entirely possible if you deal with 1 of them, their won't be any more. Typically it's: vendillion clique, blood moon, humility, pithing needle, pyroblast and vensers.

Augur is incredibly strong. With 20 targets I have an experimental fail rate of 14%, calculated of 29%, but that doesn't involve stacking with brainstorm and thinning.

More often I wanted instant/sorceries over lands/artifacts in previous builds, so Augur serves a solid any-time purpose. I've had him eat LOADs of swords/bolts/terminus just because he is annoying as a body.


Current build runs 22 targets, so 25% calculated, should push experimental down to 11-12.

Hey J-Funk, i just had the occasion of watching your match against RUG on the SCG archives and i think you missed a line of play that would have probably won the second game. It was your 5th turn, you opponent has a flipped Delver and a Tarmo in play and all his 3 lands tapped. You untapped 2 Trops and 2 Cloudposts (1 being a Vesuva) and you have just revealed a pretty uninmpressive hand of double Crop, Show and Tell and Karakas. You topdecked Needle, played Karakas, tapped it for mana and cropped it away getting an additional Cloudpost. Until now the plan was perfect. Where you punted in my opinion was not playing the Crop, sacrifing a Tropical Island for Eye of Ugin. Remeber that you still have Karakas mana flowing and 2 untapped Cloudposts ready to provide you exactly the 7 manas you need to insta fetch an Eldrazi (and you were playing the good one, Ulamog), without having to fear Stifle. Consider this: if your opponent has Fow and opts to counter your crop, you're still left with wasteland protection and a blue land, which is enough to cast Snt in case you topdeck a Titan or an Eldrazi. If he doesn't, the the very next turn you could have played Ulamog, nuking the Delver at the very least and presenting an unsurmountable body for the Tarmo if not countered. I'm pretty sure you could have won the game in this way.

This is great feedback, but I don't think the math adds up. If I had cropped away a tropical island for an Eye of Ugin that would have left me with 1 Trop, 2 Clouposts, a Karaks, and an Eye, which is just 6 mana plus Eye. But, following your advice what I really should have done is just cropped BOTH of the tropical islands away, getting a cloudpost and an Eye, then I would have had enough to go get Ulamog and cast him the next turn. So, I think we've arrived at where I could have put a win together.
