Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard
The prices on Dual Lands just keep getting more and more absurd. If you really want to have some fun...
try this.

Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard
Makes me really wish I hadn't sold my Underground Seas a few months ago when I needed the money. :(

Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard
what about sword of fire and ice sitting at around $50 right now? when did that happen?
-
Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard
Yeah, Seas are the one thing that is plaguing me. I can pass on the Imperial Recruiter, Loyal Retainers, Strategic Planning, Tabernacle (actually sold a mint one of these), etc., but Seas are something I feel like I need. I have pretty much every other playset of staples but just can never bring myself to fork out for Seas. I should get smart and trade my two Candelabras for a playset.

If you absolutely must use one, perhaps one of your friends has one in their EDH deck that you can borrow. Otherwise, it's best to wait on some cooling off from Legacy tourney circuit to let prices settle a bit.

I don't think its Legacy thats pushing the prices of SoFI and SoLS. I think its EDH. That said, now I'm disappointed that I passed on a $15 SoFS thinking that in 6 months, they'll be back to $8 (their usual price)
When did this price spike on those swords start anyways?

Seems to me that it's caused by all the standard hype with Sword of Feast and Famine and Stoneforge Mystic. Those cards are skyrocketing too.

Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard
The current spiking of price is the result of one thing. The popularity of the format. If legacy sucked, then everything would've stayed cheap. Because that isn't the case, the demand for staples has increased. I don't see why everyone has started panicking. It's been clear this was going to happen for a while now.

Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard
Well...karakas is another example of popularity.

Well, maybe if you know what to look for with market prices and such. I certainly don't.
*Sigh*
Guess I'm going to have to get my last 35 duals as their Ravnica versions...

Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard
Let's not panic here. Many staples (including duals) went dramatically up in value at some point last year, then down. Remember Goyf in its race to 100$, too. Sure that was before the extended rotation, but you get the idea. Many non-blue duals could be acquired for roughly 100$ a playset for a long period of time post-ridiculous spike. Grindstones were 10-11$ each not two months ago. I'm guessing prices will be down again when people start dumping their cards once they see how much they could get for them. I mean, when I did the math and saw I could get 2500$ for my 40 duals, I was almost tempted.
-
Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard
None of these prices are going down anytime soon. Up, yes. Down, no.
-
Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard
If you had a full set of 40 revised duals would you keep them or trade them up for FBB or beta?
-
Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard
I'd keep a full set of duals to be able to build any deck I wanted, then replace them as I found betas. FBB is nice, but you get spoiled hard once you start on the betas.
-
Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard
FBB sucks, it's a sad compromise from alpha/beta - keep the revised duals until you can afford alpha/beta, take your time and you'll eventually be able to get the cards you want
-
Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard
I'd say keep one set of Revised to play with, since most of the time in a large you'll want to shuffle more intensely, which can sometimes put a lot of strain on your cards. Like today I played in a GPT, but I played with my Revised copies so I could riffle shuffle like a madman. I want to make sure about sufficient randomization. When I'm playing with friends and I have more time to nicely shuffle,t hat's when I pull out the Betas. Mind you, if I had a feature-match for SCG, I'd probably whip out teh Beta duals :)

Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard
Real men riffle shuffle beta power.
Without sleeves!
also, wtfbbqsauce is up with Sylvan Library jumping up nearly 200%?

Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard
These price increases are really fascinating to watch. I have been playing Magic off and on since 1994 and have never seen anything like this. Thankfully I have owned most of the old cards since way before they ever spiked up. For the longest time Blue duals were around 15-20 and non blue duals cost 10-15. I remember paying $9 for FOWs.... I have recently been paying "high" prices for duals because I have started to upgrade my revised playset to Unlimited. Fortunately I upgraded many seas before the recent price spike. For a long time you could get Unlimited cards for more or less the same price as Revised - that's still sort of the case. That always has surprised me. People just sort of forget that Unlimited exits. I personally think they look really pimp. The colors are really vivid, and I don't mind the white boarder at all.
Mana Crypt is another surprising card. I can't believe that thing is listed at $70 on SCG! That has to be the influence of EDH. That must have been a $12 card when I picked up for Vitantage play back about 10 years ago.
Most of this stuff doesn't bother me except I'm really annoyed that Candelabra has gone up so much because I wanted one to build a Antiquities set. I really don't want to pay 200+ for that stupid card.
Lastly, Can someone explain to me why Diamond Valley is shooting up in price??? Is it in a deck? EDH? I'm really confused? Fortunately I finished my Arabian set a couple years ago when you could get those old cards for pretty cheap on ebay.

Sounds like EDH at work. There's quite a lot of stealing-effects, so having access to reusable sac-outlets is really useful. At least I haven't heard of it being used in other formats.
-
Re: Raise, raise, raise. The price of cardboard
That sac outlet in EDH is invaluable. It prevents stealing, as zlatzman mentioned, but it also prevents your general (or other important creature) from getting shuffled away by spin into myth, hallowed burial type effects. It's the same reason foil High Markets are 35$-45$.
