It's not about not understanding the inner workings of the free market. It's about neglecting it in the first place. Arguing that understanding the free market equals being positive about it, is ideology and is pointless discussing about.

That's exactly what I expect them to do, which I commend them for doing (rather than remanding their orders after they've been placed).

Re: [Official] Bitching About Prices and Reprints Thread
if you KNEW there was a chance for something you had to go up in value (even if only temporarily) why wouldn't you stop sales of that item until the new need was confirmed? Thats why I still buy mana drains when they sell on ebay under a certain amount. If one day it becomes unbanned. Ill be STOKED!

If they can mark them up while the hype is high and make some money on the .5% of idiot Magic players willing to pay that price more power to them. Everyone knows 4th edition Land Tax is not a $30 card.
Also I see some people complaining they removed stuff off the site right before the announcement. Problem? Why were these people even looking for Land Tax around midnight in online stores? We all know the answer. People raging because one store learned it's lesson on repeatedly getting burned on unban days and now they can't take advantage of it. It is to laugh.

Re: [Official] Bitching About Prices and Reprints Thread
I did my speculation buying of the Land Taxes I would need to play with (I refuse to speculate/participate and buy extra copies) in case it ever went up on Monday evening. but, I did also buy Worldgorger and Black Vises.
Watching Ebay at 9:05 PST was hilarious, though. Refreshing the page every few seconds gave less and less results. It was great to laugh about.
Point being, there's SO many 4th Edition Land Taxes, and the fact that it's awful, that Tax will come down in price. Already people are undercutting others to try to get their speculatory plunder shipped.

First Rule About Discussing the Purchase of Cards:
Sooner or later the discussion will come down to whom bought their Goyfs cheaper/earlier. ALWAYS.

Werebear is better! (and definitely cheaper now)

Re: [Official] Bitching About Prices and Reprints Thread
So what is the expected stabilized price of Land Tax and Scroll Rack now? Too early to guess?
-
Re: [Official] Bitching About Prices and Reprints Thread
I think the old cards either stay the same or go up in value. Once they see a price jump I don't see them going down without a ban. If the card is $30 now I doubt people would be letting it go for lower in a year's time even if it didn't make a noticable impact on the meta. Same goes for Scroll Rack. I don't think it's going to make an impact but will still hold its $30 value next year this time. Maybe down to $20 but probably not even that.

I bought 7x Sea Drake for $0.50/ea, and 4x Reset for $2/ea back when Faerie Stompy and Solidarity were in full effect. /brags/ Later sold the Resets for 12500% profit, and the Drakes for 7000% profit.

Re: [Official] Bitching About Prices and Reprints Thread
I bought some cards on craigslist a little over a year ago for about $40. It had a complete set of Revised in Near Mint condition plus an almost complete set of Revised in excellent to near mint condition. It was missing a few duals and cards like Balance and Fastbond in the second set.
Do I win this thread?
Edit: It included a retro mtg binder in my purchase.

Angry bitching whining post about [card] being [price] over its [user preferred price].
Unfortunately, it will take about a year for price memory to reflect actual demand rather than perceived demand. That means Scroll Rack and Land Tax will be a $360-400 combo for the near future. Good thing it's the durdly king of card advantage that has still yet to find a win condition.

I found a foil Quilled Slagwurm beside my car in the parking lot of my lgs.

Re: [Official] Bitching About Prices and Reprints Thread
Some friends of mine and me bought like 3.000€ worth of cards from our local store for less than 30€. The shop had almost everything you could wish for but the owner never showed any interest in keeping up with prices. Sometimes you would walk up and some of the people working there told you to come back tomorrow because they didn feel like selling today.
So one day, he said it was ok to just go through all the giant boxes of cards he had in the back of the shop and just buy anything we wanted. Lion's Eye Diamond, Force of Will, Candelabra of Tawnos, Natural Order, Wasteland, Show and Tell.Everything for the prices he had written down in his "list" that was printed around 1999. It even had Deutsche Mark prices instead of the Euro. It was one of the most hilarious days in my life of Magic.

Yeah I ended up dumping those Goyfs for about $100 apiece during the Modern price spike. I was a little sad because of the nostalgic value, but I didn't really need them anymore.

Nice!
Our lgs once bought what they thought was a stack of commons from someone selling a lot (they bought the stack for about $10). Inside the stack? An UNL Mox Ruby...

4 x Earthcraft
4 x Mind's Desire

The price of Land Tax went up, what, 8-10x what it was when it was banned? Demand also went from next to nothing to probably hundreds of Legacy players looking to buy the card. Given that demand went up 100x or so overnight, an 8-10x markup doesn't look that bad.
Also, SCG doesn't own nearly enough Land Taxes to set the price. This is market forces not a "collusive oligopoly."

Don't laugh, it's actually a pretty good idea for Mind Twist and Black Vise. You know eventually those two will be taken off. It might be a while, but it will happen. I am sitting on a few beta and alpha ones just in case. I can always sell them to collector's if something gets printed that obsoletes them completely. If they ever are taken off, you made a killing off the betas.

I already reported the auction twice. The problem is eBay doesn't actually investigate unless multiple people report the auction. So if I'm the only one not being retarded they just ignore it. eBay used to give a shit but now with all the fees and the lack of actual customer service it's a piece of garbage. It's rather unfortunate that it penetrated the market at the right time to the point where no auction sites outside of something like Yahoo in JP can compete.
Also it's too late the price trend has already been set so now people are posting Foil Griselbrands for around 200.00 USD. Same shit different card.

Tax is already under $20 each and that took all of 48 hours so I guess we can say you were wrong.
IMO Tax is going to be MAX $15 more likely it will settle under or around $10. Fact of the matter is the card is bad and has been reprinted to shit (Legends, 4th, Battle Royale x multiple languages for each printing)

Re: [Official] Bitching About Prices and Reprints Thread
In such occasions I'm happy to be proven wrong.

Land Tax is crashing. Currently 4th edition ones are going for $15 on Ebay.

It is pretty clear that Land Tax won't be a staple though.

If you are a believer that Land Tax will be a staple in Legacy you should probably not speculate on a format you obviously know nothing about.

My bigger issue is cards like Imperial Seal or maybe even Scavenging Ooze in a couple years where you need them to play certain decks and they are super rare/expensive/hard to find.

I've got someone offering me a Judge Promo Maze of Ith for 214€ (270$).
Do you think it's gonna be worth it?

IMO I don't think it's worth it, but it's subjective.
-
Re: [Official] Bitching About Prices and Reprints Thread
I also don't think it's "worth it". As in: I would never pay that much for a card, especially since there's a way cheaper alternative.
But folks are crazy. Looking at that one ebay auction, it's very likely gonna break 500$, maybe it even did by now. On the other hand, there's only tow bidders skyrocketing the price on it. Auctions on the previous days finished way below that price. However, magiccardsmarket.eu is completly out of Judge Promo Maze of Ith.
I don't know. Seeing how hard it would very likely be to find a buyer, I think I'll just let it go. Still, I feel bad about selling my copy at 60€ last year :frown: Still not bad for winning it by just coming 7th in a small tournament :-)
-
Re: [Official] Bitching About Prices and Reprints Thread
The thing is, it's very easy to manipulate the market in Magic cards. Almost too easy...
-
Re: [Official] Bitching About Prices and Reprints Thread
Way too easy. That one auction is going to start a price trend in people's minds, even though it is not a pattern.
Also, there's quite a few Mazes, more than the Mutavaults. What the fuck.
