Legacy playables from recent sets
Sup, returning from a Magic hiatus of a year or two.
I'm a "Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire" kinda guy, so I like to play eternal Legacy with some new cards. Can ppl fill me in on what's come out fairly recently that's Legacy playable?
It doesn't have to be a 4-of in a DTB; I just like to see cool new shit. e.g. I've seen Sorcerous Spyglass, Stitcher's Supplier, Abrade, and Search for Azcanta. No need to be exhaustive either; anything will help me get filled in.

Goblin Trashmaster M19. A better Tuk Tuk Scrapper essentially.
Karn, Scion of Urza. Dominaria. So far I've seen it only in Dragon Stompy lists. In a GP winning list too.
Blood Sun. Rivals. I've seen it occasionally in Red Stompy and/or Sneak Red lists.
Dire Fleet Daredevil. Rivals. RW Death and Taxes.
Silent Gravestone. Rivals. I think there will be less of this one since Deathrite Shaman is gone.
Gideon of The Trials. Hazoret, the Fervent.
That's what I can think of off the top of my head.

Re: Legacy playables from recent sets
Brightling is the new darling of DnT players
-
Re: Legacy playables from recent sets
For D&T the following cards are also from new sets:
- Shalai, voice of plenty has been played as a 2 of max and is a candidate for the flex slot (probably out of date now)
- Remorseful Cleric is a candidate for the main deck (currently polayed as a two of also)
- Dire Fleet Daredevil in the RW versions of D&T as a two of also
For other decks:
- Isn't Hollow one played in dredge? (or maybe this is in vintage only thanks to bazar of Bagdad)
- arena rector in Nic Fit
- alpine moon in sideboard of goblins.
- arcane artisan is a sideboard card for sneak and show.

Wow, very helpful list, thanks NeckBird too

Re: Legacy playables from recent sets
Collective Brutality sees play in reanimator, pox, and some junk/deadguy/nic fit lists. It isn't commonly played, but it isn't really rare either. Smuggler's Copter sees fringe play in Imperial Painter.

Re: Legacy playables from recent sets
Don't think I saw Renegade Rallier, used in Maverick sometimes, or Magus of the Mind, who gave rise to the new deck Bizarro Stormy (a Tin Fins type of deck based on the new Magus).
Nor did I see Tireless Tracker who is used in Lands' sideboard, Nic Fit and Maverick. Not sure if that's too old for the topic.
As Foretold has enabled a few new experimental archetypes, most notably making suspend cards like Ancestral Visions and the Balance-variant much better.
Leovold, Emissary of Trest was released two years ago now. Used in BUG control decks, sometimes in Nic Fit and Maverick. Any deck that can, basically.

Re: Legacy playables from recent sets
I’m surprised mission briefing didn’t make any lists. It works like snapcaster, except it allows alternate casting costs. Digs for 2 too. That double blue is a bit of a pain though. I’m testing it in solidarity, and it’s been good so far.

Guilds of Ravnica was released in October. This thread is from July.

Re: Legacy playables from recent sets
It's an interresting exercise anyway to do it for Guilds of Ravnica and older sets if new old cards are used in a deck.
Queen Marchesa from Conspiracy 2 is now used in 4C loam (as a one of thought).
Creeping chill from Guilds of Ravnica is used in dredge.
Assassin's trophy in various BGx builds.

Only in modern.

Manaless Dredge runs it.
I know I do

Re: Legacy playables from recent sets
Goblin Cratermaker has been well worth the inclusion in Shortcake, as of late.
I wouldn't be surprised if Goblins was running it as well.

Just about every Goblins player is running it.
It's just really good value. 2/2 for 1R. Creature type Goblin. Survives -1/-1 effects. Casts Tarfire. Kills Emrakul, Ensnaring Bridge, Jitte, Batterskull, Thought-Knot Seer, Needle / Revoker, Aether Vial, mana rocks, random combo pieces, ...

I’ve seen Grixis delver lists with this guy main board. He’s the real deal.

Oh nice, I bought a foil Marchesa a while ago because I thought the card was amazing, just didn't have a home! And I love supplemental sets.
On Cratermaker, They've been printing way too many artifact hate cards lately. Hope it stops.
Revitalize isn't played in legacy yet, but I can see this is control sideboards against burn.
-
Re: Legacy playables from recent sets
We should mention the cards that revitalize the artifact archetypes too. I think this is past the purpose of the thread by now but it's fun to list cards so here they are:
Sai, Master Thopterist
Whir of Invention
The Antiquities War

@Tylert: yes they are, doing well on a few occasions recently, you'll have to find the examples yourself but I think it was a recent GP (EW perhaps) and MTGO, I don't keep track of it, just notice..

Antiques War was a very potent wincon in artifact decks at EW. It was pretty much game over after two turns.
Sure artifact decks weren't everywhere, but AW was heavily talked about between rounds

If Burn becomes a large enough share of the meta for control to run Revitalize, then the meta has reached an unhealthy state...

If Burn becomes a large share of the meta, I’m still not sure I’d run Revitalize.

Revitalize would be a maindeck hedge vs burn/aggro, and it's not significantly better in that regard than Renewed Faith.
As a SB card in a white deck you would want something like COP:R that actually says 'you can't lose' rather than 1W counter target lava spike draw a card

Edit: For real though, if someone's actually considering Revitalize as an anti-aggro sideboard, Missionary is probably better. You gain more life and get a body to trade with an attacker, which is on average better tempo than cantripping into a random card.

Re: Legacy playables from recent sets
You're being attacked by a pair of two power creatures, you can cast fog and prevent four damage or you can gain 3 life. Your call.

You're being targeted by two lightning bolts. You can cast a fog that does literally nothing or gain 3 life. Your call.

Why run Fog over Moment's Peace?

My call is the more versatile fog which I can use in other matchups.
Never underestimate the fog->crackback turnaround.:cool:

Well, if we’re really gonna have this discussion, the original argument was to have a white answer to Burn. I don’t know a lot of white decks that have problems dealing with creatures, so we’re talking about dealing with the actual burning, and fog is out. Except maybe Dawn Charm, if we really, REALLY want to play a fog effect that does something against burn.

The reason why I mentioned Revitalize is that it is a maindeck 4-off in standard Jeskai control lists precisely for buying time to make land drops, essentially working as a bad pseudo time walk.
Why I think Revitalize (but also Renewed Faith) is interesting, is because life gain is historically either bad, or results in an infinite combo. Why is it bad? Because of the opportunity cost of a dedicated life gain card. Kind of similar to why Auras are often bad because if the creature is removed, you also lose the aura so you don't get ahead. However, since the Amonkhet cycle they have started experimenting with auras that have a enters the battlefield effect such as drawing a card or giving a -1/-1 counter on a target creature in order to offset that limitation of the card's inherent weakness. I believe that inherent weakness for lifegain cards is that they cost a card, and it seems that Wizards has also identified this, thus slapping a card draw on life gain cards. The power level is already creeping, going from +2 life to +3 life for 1W. It is only going to be a matter of time until this effect will be gain 4 life draw a card for 1CC at which point I would gladly run 4 of them in the sideboard and perhaps even in the maindeck to off-set bolt snap bolt or to kill a Death's Shadow (if the life gain spell can target a player).
I think you will see this card design more often in new sets and it warrants a reevaluation of what life is worth in Magic. We know 1 cc is worth more than 2 life due to the power level or Phyrexian mana cards and Ancient Tomb and that making a spell uncounterable or giving a creature haste is worth less than 3 life unless the spell or creature is part of a combo/finisher (Bosejiu and Hall of the Bandit Warlord)
Also, I think Lone Emissary isn't that bad. Timely Reinforcement is currently seen as better but I'm not sure that's true. Lone Emissary comes down a turn earlier preventing an extra from a Goblin Guide so you could essentially also gain 6 life with it. The 1 extra mana to have 3 tokens split up does not seem like the best deal although you can use 2 tokens to block a Goblin Guide and still have 1 left to chump something else. Both of them do not have a card draw attached unfortunately. (And yes, the bodies could be better than a random card)
