So working off the assumption that a deck whose secondary plan involves resolving a 4cc spell with board position doesn't thrive in a metagame where non-combo decks tend to run two out of mass...

Well good for you. If we're talking Miracles Vengevine can still single-handidly get you back in the game if they tap out to sweep and drop Jace. The other cards that have been mentioned can't.
If you're looking for a 3-4cc card to hedge your bets versus control in general you should probably just run a couple of Vengevines and call it a day. Don't bother with graveyard setup cards - 4...
