It may be helpful to review our "Adept Guidelines" (Appendix A) so up you can see what they mean to us.
Incidentally, if anyone has recommendations for the Adept Guidelines or other site rules, feel free to PM me with your thoughts.
I've got to comment on something, and I know it's not going to be well-received, but it bears mentioning anyway.
After I stopped playing for like three or four years, I got back into the game and was introduced to The Source by TeenieBopper, Fakespam, and Garvman. This was during the absolute height of xenophobia and elitism from the Source. It took literally a month of trial by fire before I became such a better player that I could now compete on the level that the rest of the Syracuse players, most of whom had been playing the format for years. I attribute the majority of this to the quality of discussion that was on the site at that time. Point being, the elitism and harsh judgment of posts contributed to a level of quality that we can't possibly hope to achieve anymore. In catering to the masses, we've sacrificed a lot of what made us what we were at the beginning.
Now, don't get me wrong - in most instances, this site has made steps for the better, and still exists as the forefront of Legacy development. However, the signal to noise ratio on the site has gotten much, much worse since 2004, and I think anyone who was around then would be remiss to disagree.
Elitism serves a purpose on forums such as this, and shouldn't always be seen as such a negative. If we were to become the socialistic society that some are calling for, with no avatars, no signatures, no post counts, no distinctions between those who are dedicated Legacy veterans and those who are Johnny-come-lately's, then we would lose our ability to discern relevant information from the advice of people who really don't know what the hell they're talking about.
Is the adept system the solution to this? Maybe, maybe not. Are there issues with it, the way it exists today? For sure. But the system isn't wholly evil, and serves a specific and even necessary purpose in helping to separate the signal from the noise.
well, duh.I attribute the majority of this to the quality of discussion that was on the site at that time. Point being, the elitism and harsh judgment of posts contributed to a level of quality that we can't possibly hope to achieve anymore. When in doubt, mumble.
When in trouble, delegate.
This is a huge point right here. Back then you didn't get too many casual decks being discussed anywhere on this site. We were all working on Landstill, Angel Stompy, old Mike Glow version of Dragon Stompy(!). I know this is gonna bight me in the ass but a MAJORITY of the posters back then were of current Adept level or damn near close (based entirely on format knowledge).
Maybe it was because I remember when there was under 500 members. Perhaps it was because the site just started and anyone who was on this site lived and breathed 1.5 (Legacy) as their only format. I don't post much anymore in many of the deck forums. I just can't take a thread seriously that adds Chubb Toads to random current Legacy decks. [No offense Team Hammafist - love you guys :)] Also I don't feel the need to turn down the 8 suggestions that the next 2R creature that gets printed belongs in Dragon Stompy.
I read this forum everyday. I love this community. I'll see ya all at the Source Tourney.
Reading what I wrote above, and reading Nightmare's comments, I think I misspoke, or didn't say it clearly enough. Elitism has so many negative connotations, and I'm careful to tread there, but I do agree signal : noise has been tanking over time. There's just a ton of spam and a lot of junk to wade through to find the good stuff. Part of that is the huge influx of new posters who still haven't learned the ropes, part of it is lax moderation.
When I said some adepts should be less "elitist," I meant, less haughty, condescending and outright insulting. It's a fine line, but if we are going to be at the forefront of the format, which I think involves a lot folks tightening their posts, thinking and testing, then "elitism" is not such a bad thing.
If folks complain that their casual deck gets slammed and we're deemed "elitist," I could totally live with that. It's a matter of finding the right tone and the right way to say, "That decks sucks," or "your card evaluations reflect the mind of a moron" and not limit the growth and health of the site by pushing otherwise decent posters away.
FWIW, I agree with all of your points above, Adam.
@Afro, Chubbstill is just a joke deck for lulz. And it has supplied many lulz for many sourcers.
I love you too man(no idea who you are tho).
