I make a lot of sideboarding decisions based on being on the play vs being on the draw. I was having no problems siding out 1 CB and 1 Top when I needed to, mostly on the draw I would do this. Here is a simple sideboarding guide for run of the mill lists for these archetypes:

Zoo

IN- 2 Blue Blast, 2 Sower, 1 Firespout
OUT- 1 Counterbalance, 1 Top, 3 Jace

Merfolk

IN- 3 Pyroblast, 1 Firespout, 2 Pithing Needle
OUT- 3 Jace, 1 Repeal, 1 Counterbalance, 1 Top

New Horizons

IN- 3 Pyroblast, 2 Sower, 2 Spell Pierce, 1 Submerge
OUT- 2 Jace, 1 Repeal, 3 Firespout, 1 Counterbalance, 1 Top

Goblins

IN- 1 Firespout, 2 Grip, 2 Blue Blast, 2 Needle
OUT- 3 Jace, 1 Counterbalance, 1 Top, 2 Spell Snare

ANT

IN- 3 Pyroblast, 2 Spell Pierce
OUT- 3 Firespout, 1 Repeal, 1 EE

Belcher

IN- 2 Blue Blast, 2 Spell Pierce, 2 Needle
OUT- 4 STP, 1 Jace, 1 Repeal
(maybe different if they play Swarm)

Countertop

IN- 2 Krosan Grip, 2 Sower, 3 Blast
OUT- 3 Firespout, 1 STP, 1 Jace, 1 Top, 1 Counterbalance

what exactly do you board against Ichorid? Only the singleton Firespout?

I board in the Spell Pierces, Red Blasts, Firespout. Matchup really isn't that bad anyways, so I don't dedicate any SB slots to it.

I just tested the list a few games and I must say, this list is a complete powerhouse

I agree. A lot of the players that liked this list tried out cutting the Vendilion Cliques, a Jace and Repeal for a Trinket Mage package. Ben Weinberg played a Trinket Mage package AND Grim Lavamancer in his winning 4c CounterTop list from the SCG event this weekend. I like the idea of a miser's Lavamancer.

I also thought of a Trinket Mage package. Works extremly well with the singleton EE and Needles from SB.
My problem with a single Grim Lavamancer is that I tend to have problems finding it when I need it.

Turns out Weinberg's list ran two. But even so, one-ofs in a deck like this are really fine. Between all the Top, Brainstorm and Jace all comboing with fetches, you generally see your entire deck every game anyways.

I might try out the Trinket Mage package this weekend at the Jupiter Event. Seemed to work for him, so I figure it's worth trying out. Although, this list worked awfully well :-).

I'd be interested in knowing how many times he used Grim Lavamancer as an insurance policy to protect an attacking or blockingTarmogoyf into an opposing 'Goyf. Lavamancer also acts as a distraction in the early game posing as a dummy against opponents putting you on some sort of Fish or U/r/g Aggro Control deck, which clearly generates mixed signals to an opponent.

When I was watching the live coverage of the Top 8 of that event, I saw him use it to deal the final 6 points after the board stalemated. It was so nasty.

I tried the Trinket mage / lavamancer list today at a small local tournament.
4 Rounds

1st Round against Elves Combo was really fast.
G1 Turn1 top, Turn2 Balance, game
G2 Turn 1 Lavamancer, Turn 2 balance T3 Top + Lavamancer, game.

2nd and 3rd Round against the Mirror. Lost 0-1 both times, by either sheer luck of opponent or by me getting flooded like hell.

4th Round against Zoo was , well, easy going.

Fazit: I really like the Lavamancer and the Trinket Mage package, the list works incredebly well but I have mana issues. I tend to get flooded really really hard( best example: EOT Top(3 lands) fetch, Top( 3 lands), draw fetch, fetch, brainstorm (3 lands) NICE)
