Green Sun Zoo 10th at SCG Indy

Hello all! I'm not big on writing up reports or anything so I'll tyry to make this as quick as possible. Also congratz to my friend Robert Causey placing 7th in standard and for keeping me going all day.

Friday we take a nice long 12 hour trip from MD to Indy. During the trip we are spitting ideas out for decks and I said hey why not try Green Sun's Zenith in zoo. After discussing it I was sold.

Saturday I scrub out of standard with GerryTs kuldotha red list and sleeve up zoo for the legacy challenge. I ended up 3-1 only losing to affinity piloted by Tim Morrison who got 16th on sunday. So on to sunday...

    Here's my list
    http://sales.starcitygames.com//deck...p?DeckID=36636

Round 1 Jeff with Mono White Death and Taxes
Game 1 we trade swords and I end up just swarming him. Game 2 is basically the same.

Round 2 Ryan with R/G Goblins
Game 1 I just remove his guys and play bigger guys then him. Game 2 I remove his guys then drop elsepth and jitte.

Round 3 Mike with Forgemaster..Congrats on second man.
Game 1 I'm able to squeeze out the win thanks to pridemage and swords. Game 2 his turn 1 Revoker naming Pridemage shuts me down since i kept a 2 pridemage hand with no removal. Game 3 he drops turn 1 Chalice on 1 then Wurmcoil then Sundering Titan yea I lose.

Round 4 Carlo with U/W/x rebels Gratz on top 32
Game 1 I win after his active cradle and searcher keeps him with guys to block until I out guy him. Game 2 he drops guys early with training grounds and swords for my guys. Game 3 I just over run with guys when he has nothing out.

Round 5 Vince with Junk and hot tech side
Game 1 and 2 I have answers to his guys and just keep dropping guys.

    Round 6 Mike with Dredge
Game 1 he beats me with ichords and zombies faster then I can beat him. Game 2 he starts off fast with huge dredges and therapys me and sees I'm holding on to a crypt and after double checking his grave to see no dread return or another therapy, I just pop the crypt and beat face. Game 3 I see all my grave hate and just take it.

Round 7 Tim with Team America
Game 1 he had more removal then I have guys. Game 2 and 3 I'm able to just drop guys faster and get out goyfs with zenith.

Round 8 Josh with CounterTop Thopter Gratz on the top 4 finish
Game 1 I'm able to just beat him down quick then Elspeth my guy when he drops his Moat. Games 2 and 3 he thopter locks me while I dig with library to not find a grip when I needed it.

    Round 9 Nathan with Belcher
Game 1 he combos out with goblins even though I had guys and 4 pieces of removal, he was still able to out swing me. Game 2 I get a Teeg out turn 2. He wishes for a pyroclasm which I smile to when next turn I zenith out my other Teeg. Game 3 he goes for turn 1 belcher but I had the Mindbreak Trap into a turn 2 Teeg he concedes.

I'm pretty happy with how Green Sun was all day. Granted I only mentioned it a few times, it was my mvp of the day being able to get any answer or beater I needed. The side board is being worked on since I made it to help with combo and aggro only.

Thanks man, you were a pleasure to play against and I was glad to see you finish well :)

Would you still run GSZ as a 4-of next time? That seems about 1 too many. Good job, 10th is pretty good. You in the money now!

Congratulations on placing! Big Stan with Big Zoo, I like the sound of it.

I too tested out GSZ at indi in my own zoo to similar results (how good the card is, not getting 10th) - good eye on a new tech card, it's the real deal.

    Cheers

I was thinkiing about going to 3 gsz but I'm greedy and want to see it. But if I did cut it I wouldn't know what to replace it with. Might sound bad but what does everyone think of adding bullets like Great Sable Stag or Burning Tree Shaman in.

Sable Stag loses its luster when it can be countered. Burning Tree Shaman might be good - 4 toughness is a big deal on top of the solid damage effect. One of GSZ's powers is getting over counterbalance, so why not? Speaking of bullets, I ran one Teeg main to great effect, although he could but heads with the gx sorcery, plus Elspeth. It's a judgment call.

Teeg is something I'm considering in the main that would definitely bring me to 2 gsz. The swords was really a toss up between it and path to exile. I really have no explanation why I chose it other then I was prepared for more tribal and decks with small creatures. I think I will be moving to 4 paths for my next run and 2 swords in the side. I'm in the midst of changing my side to be more flexible for a loose meta.

I think Swords is better in your deck -- it is much more controlish like Big Zoo should be and the life difference should be negated when you have Elspeth as your late/end game. I played Fast Zoo and didn't do quite as well, but I'm glad to hear GSZ is pulling great results from a lot of players. I may up my count then.

    Again, congratulations on the finish!

I am puzzled at the lack of dryad arbor in the deck. This turns GSZ into a llawonar elf. I'm sure it would have been extremely relevant in some games and sped up your clock significantly!

Zoo most likely doesn't want to doo such an unimpressive turn 1 play. Any 1-drop in the deck seems to be way better.

You don't always have the turn 1 play, having the option to find arbor IMO is worth it's inclusion. Oh and I forgot to throw in the Grats! Great job taking it to 10th! You are the first man to put GSZ in a high placing finish at a huge tournament!

Thanks guys and the guy who played bant and got 9th also had 1 gsz which worked for him. dryad arbor is a very good consideration for the deck but I believe his home belongs in bant. Ill test the teeg and arbor this weekend and if anyone is interested in the new side ill be glad to share it.

I'm definitely interested in your testing! I love having the Teeg to steal random games from combo; Arbor seems fun in my testing, but I'm not sure how it will hold up against real opponents.

Is Terravore a possibility? I think KotR is a better card, but there are games where having a big piece of fat that can trample will flat out win games (i.e. through Goblin or Thopter tokens). A 3-1 split (or even including Terravore in addition to KotR) makes for a nice tutorable target.

The current side I came up with is....
    2 Gaddock Teeg
    2 Mindbreak Trap
    2 Ravenous Trap
    1 Bojuka Bog
    1 Vexing Shusher
    2 Krosan Grip
    2 Path to Exile
    2 Ancient Grudge
    1 Wasteland

The main has stayed the same I haven't tried a md teeg yet but when I do I will cutting 1 GSZ for it. The arbor just doesnt feel right i never want to fetch it or to zenith for it. I have also thought about finding room for a dauntless escort somewhere for wrath effects.

Congrats on the good finish! Always nice to see zoo finish good.

What are your thoughts on Thrun, the Last Troll? He seems like he could really blow the counter top match wide open. Even as a one of to tutor for. Also i've been hearing alot of rage around the forums about playing silence effects in the board, anyone think this is a good idea?

Thrun is on my list of test cards along with dauntless escort and other good bullets. I really don't think chant effects are needed in the board its a one time opps got ya thing.

Awesome job at taking a fairly big chance and including not only 2-3 copies of new tech, but going full-bore and dedicating 4 slots to GSZ. It paid off for you. Cool. ;)

I have 3x GSZ and I'm itching to try it out. I also have Teeg and Shusher as bullets, not to mention having up to 7-8 goyfs/pridemages maindeck isn't a bad thing! I want to squeeze MORE out of GSZ, but honestly, with just those it's already on the verge of freakin' awesome (as opposed to just 'awesome')

I think you can support Thrun and Dauntless Escort in your big zoo list...how do you feel about it in a traditional zoo list? I also feel that Dryad Arbor is not a very good play for traditional zoo, Big Zoo like your list, maaaaybe. I'd still rather sit on GSZ for additional Nacatls/Goyfs (getting Goyf for 3 is a nice way around Counterbalance.)
