    [SCD] Mental Misstep

    Mental Misstep
    Instant (Ph/U)
Counter target spell with converted mana cost 1.

What deck or archetype can this card be used in and why?

Every deck can use this. It has an alternate cost of paying 2 life. Decks that would like to interact with their opponent will want to play it to stop big turn one plays. That's essentially every deck in Legacy except for some sort of linear combo deck that doesn't have any room for additional tech. Even then they may want this in the sideboard.

How does this card fulfill the role of another card in an existing archetype more effectively than the card it would replace?

Decks with "flex" spots can probably justify this. I am not sure if it will be a Daze replacement or a Daze supplement. It can realistically fit into just about any archetype since CMC 1 spells are so integral to Legacy.

How has the metagame changed or what new cards exist now to make this card playable?

I think this card itself will change the metagame. It's not so much that new cards exist to make it immediately playable, its that so many old format staples are targets for it, including, but not limited to:

    Swords to Plowshare
    Wild Nacatl
    Thoughtseize
    Aether Vial
    Goblin Lackey
    Stifle
    Brainstorm
    Dark Ritual

At first glance this card may seem like just a Spell Snare that hits CMC 1 instead of 2. But the important difference is that you can interact on the draw, with no card disadvantage or tempo loss. I think this card alone will bring about a major shift in the legacy metagame.

This card has the potential to be one of the most played cards in a while.

Not guaranteed, but it can conceivably become a staple for every blue deck and a sideboard option for every non-blue one.

I wouldn't be surprised if it found its way into the main of otherwise non-blue decks also. For example, if your deck is relying on creatures to win, why wouldn't you want to have a hard counter for Swords with additional (and important) utility in multiple matchups?

This card will definitely change the face of Legacy in the next 3 months. Where it's ultimate home will be, is anyone's guess.

Wow, what an absurd card. This is another free counter. I imagine this will be board material against combo. It's free so it will compete against their clock at no expense, and can counter all rituals/high tides/protections, and can be used in any deck. I think aggro is going to like this

I would use it as a 4-of in any Confidant deck. Discard + Mental Misstep means that Confidant has better chances than ever of surviving and providing game-winning CA.

This card is amazing! For me it is just better than Jace TMS in Legacy!!
Will see alot of play in Blue decks and in some non-blue decks with versatile SB-slots.

+4 This card is amazing! Blue can now beat Aether Vial *gasp*, Aggro! gets a free counter, and Combo decks shudder. I like it!

I'll be stuffing it into my 75 somewhere--not a clue where, however, since it's already stuffed. It's too good to pass up, though.

    Wow,

This card has a lot of potential. This is a card in a small class of cards that punishes legacy decks for being too efficient. I bet there are more 1 casting cost spells in legacy than any other number, by a wide margin. This card could have a large influence on legacy. Good free cards are in a class of their own in this format.

    Peace

I agree that this card will probably have a large impact, although I think it's highly unlikely that that will help blue. On the contrary, blue loses a lot of its attractiveness if fast aggro decks like Zoo can cripple combo decks fairly reliably, even if only out of the board.

Entire spoiler is there for the set.

As for the card, it's an interesting change in the "free counterspell" dilemma. Not really sure what totally to make of it, but the possibilities are going to be fun to test.

So sick, I'm excited to try it in folk if the meta becomes zoo/gobos heavy.

I mean this is so insane. True, FoW can hit anything. However, this card does not have card disadvantage and does not require blue. Hello free counters. I suppose it might be a good thing if it slows down the overall pace of Legacy though, considering all the good one drops that have gotten printed.

Seriously though, this card is going to see widespread play. Its lack of color allows it to go in any deck that exists.

    just watch it be mythic

Anyway, I predict in the future wizards will kinda imply the "extirpate/counter/whatever for any color" was stupid.
