European Legacy Scene: Big Tournaments? Please Contribute

It is sad that there is no "SCG"-like tournament series in Europe. In my opinion the potential would be there , but the language problem and probably a less heteregone [magic] community/culture make it more difficult.

So, I am looking for bigger legacy tournaments in Europe: 60+ people, so we do not have to wait for a BoM or a GP to enjoy a "real" metagame and not the same guys from your city over and over again.

Browsing the web, it is very difficult to find good information about larger tournamnets (potentially UK, Germany, France, Spain or Italy,...), because of the language problem and/or not enough information (price pool, expected players).

So please, post the information about your local tournament series or some special legacy event you know about.

    The necessary information would be:
    • Date, Place
    • Expected Players or average players from previous tournaments.
    • Expected Prize Pool
    • Link to the website/event.

Hi catmint, I'm glad someone started such a thread and I really hope that it houses some constructive discussion. I can attest to the language barrier being an important factor. I am living in France for the past 6 months and I don't speak French (although I learned a bit here it's not enough to have a comfortable conversation). I attended the weeklies here for a while and a couple BoM trials, but recently I stopped going there because there was no way I could blend in. Without speaking the language you are always an outsider amongst a group of locals and even people who speak English tend to ignore you once the game is over and continue bonding with their local buddies. The games are a little tenser if your opponent doesn't speak English either, because there are no ice breakers and every confusion about the game state leads to tension.

Having experienced that I think I would be hesitant to travel to a 100-200 player (anything less than the size of a GP to be honest) tournament somewhere in Europe. I'm sure the majority would naturally be locals who know each other and speak the same language and as "outsiders" who don't speak the language and are a minority, you'd struggle having an enjoyable time.

I also imagine travel restrictions being a probem with different visa restrictions and the number of different nationalities. For example, I'm a Turkish citizen and currently I can travel freely within the Schengen zone since I have a residence permit for France. But in a few months I'll be moving to the UK for work and after that I'll need a Visa for each and every European country. If you are living in the States you are free to travel anywhere and this doesn't apply to Europe unfortunately. So yeah, I see these being a problem for establishing something akin to the SCG series.

I would travel to a bigger tournament now and then and stay for a weekend with buddies/wife to check out the city. Now I am thinking about the LCL in Barcelona on the 11th of August.

However concerning a SCG-like tournament series I think you can easily get people to travel a lot more by having attractive prices and incentives to collect "league points" and if it is a big thing and everyone is looking at it constantly as a meta indicator like SCG, you can be sure that all the local scene will be there.

You can also make some small "leagues" within the series. i.e: CEE championsships over 8 weeks stopping in Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, Zagreb, Prague or a Tour through some cities in a bigger country. I don't know why no magic shop is trying to setup something like this on a european level. With all the side-events & drafts it should be able to break even on the events and make money on sales.

But back to the topic: No responses yet.... I hope there ARE some big events in europe and I would of course collect all the posts to summarize all the tournaments in the initial post, so everyone can get an overview.

The Italian UW Standstill/Miracle top 8 guy from GP Ghent told me there'd be a big Legacy tournament in Milan (in November iirc).

Magiccardmarket is starting to do events in ( east ) germany, if they do well they might become some kind of successor to SCG. Right now I'm sceptical, but the market is as well know as SCG and actually the driving force behind card prices in Europe. I guess they might have the ressources, but either don't care, or lack experience. A friend and I already talked about a possible magiccardmarket series, if the logistics allow it. The biggest problem is that Europe is a bit behind with coverage, once the TO's would do some people would actually recgonize the events and there would be a spike in popularity. Thing is that non native english speakers would have to talk, but I guess people prefer understable coverage with accents to... french coverage.

Yes... we would have to bear with the beatiful german, french and eastern europe accents, but a decent coverage is absolutely necessary!

Yes. That was actually the idea: To collect all regular (and maybe also semi-regular) big european tournaments with all the important data (in english) in 1 thread (& summarized post)...

I wonder why Starcity does not just do the European tournaments themselves. It could be lack of resources. The crew work pretty hard keeping up with what they are doing now so Pete would have to train up a second crew and move them around Europe, get them all visas, arrange for lodging and convention rooms in a dozen foreign nations. Ah. Maybe I do know why.

They could try to do a European leg of their Invitational Qualifier series. You know, the local store just takes up the franchise..

I'll be there as well...! this thread already paid off.
Maybe we should just get a subforum for european scene, with some sticky threads for regular big tournaments and normal tournament announcements like this.

I will most likely attend as well, as kiblast advertised this to me earlier. Good to see more high profile tournaments in Europe as well.

In September, there's a WPN Premium Tournament in Nuremberg, Germany. 4 rounds of each Modern and Legacy with an insane amount of booster displays for the entire Top8. We expect around 70-80 players to attend.

Only downside? You have to first qualify by top4'ing one of the weekly Legacy events there. Glad I already did several times :D
The seven cardinal sins of Legacy:
    1. Discuss the unbanning of Land Tax Earthcraft.
    2. Argue that banning Force of Will would make the format healthier.
    3. Play Brainstorm without Fetchlands.
    4. Stifle Standstill.
    5. Think that Gaea's Blessing will make you Solidarity-proof.
    6. Pass priority after playing Infernal Tutor.
    7. Fail to playtest against Nourishing Lich (coZ iT wIlL gEt U!).
