I keep going back and forth over Burning-Tree Emissary. I feel like the ability to play free beaters is not terrible, even if they are vanilla 2/2s. I don't even mean drawing multiples of that guy, just being able to like drop BTE + Goyf, or BTE + Kird Ape + some dang other thing, or even just like, have options like play a guy AND burn a blocker/play Rancor on your turn 1 play is kind of cool.
Seriously, this is 20% of the set and it's already time to call odds? come on fhqwhgads
Well, it's certainly is better than expected. Flames of the Blood Hand was playable in Standard, and this just makes it more efficient.

I mean shit, they couldn't let it target creatures?! Or at least 4 damage to the dome.
And as for the Call of the Nightwing, what the hell. 1UB would be freaking awesome. 4 CMC is unplayable.
Gideon sucks for Legacy and I'm not too excited about him in EDH either. As others have said, he is a freaking lightning rod. But he could be awesome if your playing sphere of influence.
So, what the fuck is this.
'Creatures with drawbacks' generally actually have the drawback intrinsic to themselves. Grinning Demon for some fucking reason comes to mind; the drawback affects the caster. Abyssal Persecutor affects the caster. Phyrexian Negator opens you up to a giant wrecking. This card, just gives whatever chump is in the way lifelink.
I'm not saying it's something to build around, but it's an interesting card in that it somehow gives beef to an odd guild (B/W doesn't scream 'efficient fatty' to me at all) and its drawback is arguably really understated. Consider the fact that Swords to Plowshares has virtually never been bad, because what it provides to the caster is worth the potential for giving the opponent life. Anecdotally speaking, I've StP'ed Larit Mage tokens and gone on to win the game, so the life gain is far less critical than just winning the game because you've removed a threat.
It's not *busted*, clearly, it's just... interesting.
It's a nice and well designed card. But at 4, with no evasion nor protection, nor secondary abilities, it won't ever be played in this format. Shame. Would probably have been borderline playable at 3 hybrid. Or had it something like lifelink itself.
so far I am getting the feeling that a 1 drop utility extort creature is going to be printed and be amazing on every level.
"eggs... why'd it have to be eggs"
Clan Defiance seems pretty dope to me. Granted, I play the only Legacy deck that can get some real mileage out of it. Still, pretty dope.
Alms Beast as vanilla beater at 4 mana seems unimpressive. Maybe there's also a False Cure variant in Gatecrash?
Sounds Orzhov to me in terms of flavor - welfare that screws the owner over.
"6/6 for 4 that blows if your opponent has creatures" is an extremely narrow category of Magic cards, and Alms Beast still gets savagely outclassed in it by Desecration Demon, which came out last set.
On the other side, Skullcrack may be better than it looks. Flames of the Blood Hand was almost playable in Legacy, and 3 for 1R is a lot better than 4 for 2R.
YOU'RE GIVING ME A TIME MACHINE IN ORDER TO TREAT MY SLEEP DISORDER.
The new Specter is very intriguing. As someone else said, it's basically a flying Ophidian that steals cards from your opponent's deck instead of drawing them from yours, and it puts those cards into a second "hand" in your exile zone.
Could definitely be playable in some deck that is looking for another source of card advantage in a decently sized evasive creature body.
If specter leaves play you can't play the cards from it anymore, right?
¿High Priest of Penance?

Hm... any way to abuse him?
